    Awesome video. For everyone making this be careful with Gutermann Tera 60 in home sewing machines. Its a Tex 50 thread which is usually the max (thickness) for most modern machines. It can give older machines, or machines that aren't set up some trouble. I've been making bags for a while and Tex 30 has been fine for me. I use Guternann Mara 100 which is the same as Gutermann Sew-All.

    Makes an old maths teacher happy to see all the careful measurements! Isn’t it interesting how easy it is for our brain to make visualisation errors! You have learnt from experience I’ll wager! W

    Aloha, Great videos and I see your a kite boarder as well. I'm an old windsurfer who tried kiting in the early days. I did my own work on sails which transferred to DIY backpacking and hammock equipment. We were using x-pac 25 years ago in sails.Your 3 panel pack is a nice evolution from the traditional 4 panel. Keep up the energy and innovations. Mahalo, Hodad

    Invest in a rotary cutter and a self-healing cutting mat and you will love them!

    For anyone trying this: This is probably going to be difficult for beginners. Don’t get discouraged if you mess up. When sewing things like the elastic bottom pocket always put the stretch material on the TOP. The feed dogs will grab and pull the elastic unevenly. That’s why you ended up with puckering. It’s also hard to see when the fabric is moving around when it’s on the bottom. Also with mesh the feed dogs can rip and tear the mesh so it’s best to keep it on top. If you can get a walking foot for your machine it makes it a lot easier. You can usually find them online for about $7. For anyone else out there if your stitch starts to do something you don’t want it to just stop, take the stitches out and try again. If you make a panel that you don’t like you’ll always know and it’ll always stick out. It’s so much easier to just try again and make it the right way.

    I thoroughly enjoyed watching YOU sew the pack, I can't sew a lick! My question is, now that you have had it for a year how has it stood the test of time and use? Is the light material strong enough for long walks(1000s miles)

    • @twofoolswalking2109
      @twofoolswalking2109  3 роки тому

      Yes the fabric has exceeded my expectation I've got over a 1000km on the bag now and the fabric has stood the test of time, I'm gentle with the bag but not excessively.

    Very nice tutorial. Now that its been several months since you made it, is there anything you would change about the design other than making the trash hole larger?

    • @twofoolswalking2109
      @twofoolswalking2109  4 роки тому +2

      I would make the over the top stap split and sew it into the strap seam at two points in the centre of each shoulder strap

    This is great. I'm going to get started with making my own gear but I'm currently evaluating my options when it comes to sewing machines. I currently have a Pfaff Hobby 301 but I'd like to upgrade. It looks like you're using a Singer 347 which is one of the machines that are on my list of potential buys. Are you happy with the machine and how does it handle thicker fabrics? Have you used an older Husqvarna or Bernina before, if so did you like them? Also, did you find the flat bad to be annoying or do you prefer it over free arm machines?

    • @twofoolswalking2109
      @twofoolswalking2109  5 років тому

      It handles thicker fabrics relatively well (few layers of x21RC) but does start to struggle and need hand cranking in places. I wouldn't say no to something with a bit more grunt. No experience with other machines so can't really give a fair comparison. No issues with the flat bed.

    Hey, Love the video. How many Yards of Fabric did you use on the larger Pack. Also I was thinking about making a pack out of 5.0 hybrid CT9HK. 18/wov.6 from Rip Stop By the Roll. Would that be a better pack material than X-Pac VX21 ? thanks guys for this awesome series.

    • @twofoolswalking2109
      @twofoolswalking2109  4 роки тому

      Cheers friend, I think it was about 1.5 yards. I think the hybrid dyneema would be a great fabric for a pack, I would probably choose the 2.9oz hybrid though as 5oz will bring up the weight of the bag by a fair bit. I think it all comes down to cost/experiance. If this is your first pack I would recommend slightly cheaper as I can guarantee you'll want to make more in the future :)

    • @LALATheClown
      @LALATheClown 4 роки тому

      @@twofoolswalking2109 Thank you, The reason I was Gonna do the 5oz is the stuff feels indestructible. I am a Military Vet so I wanted a pack That I could Beat the crap out of and not worry about it. Do you think the 2.9 oz will hold up to some abuse? I just dont wanna pay so much to make my pack and it fall apart. I seen what the 0.5oz does as a pack, and it falls apart like paper.

    • @twofoolswalking2109
      @twofoolswalking2109  4 роки тому

      Go with whatever your comfortable with, the weight is probably not worth the peace of mind. Their one will make an incredible pack.

    can you give an estimate of the material cost please?

    • @twofoolswalking2109
      @twofoolswalking2109  4 роки тому +2

      The fabric was actually pretty cheap for this bag, all in I think it was < £50. That's factoring in some of the materials I had on hand as well.
