- After a disappointing first track day with the Civic Type R, let's talk about why Honda made the decisions on the brake pad and brake fluid.
In this video series, we're going to explore the FL5 Honda Civic Type R from an owner's perspective. Being a long time FK8 Civic Type R owner, we're also going to compare the previous generation Type R to the new one.

I also feel like better pad compound will squeak like hell and honda does not want that, people will complain. Brake fluid should always be changed, even on higher priced cars like BMW M cars the fluid is not up to the task. And you are right for sure, some people might be ok with the stock pads, or depends on the track, some tracks just don't require as much braking, fluid though, always should be changed.
Yea I was mainly surprised on the pads, they were smoking like crazy
On my FK8, the pads squeak in slow stop and go traffic at times but that doesn't bother me at all.
I’ve had buddies that had issues when they mixed SRF with other brake fluids. I did some research and it has to do with the fact that SRF is more hydrophobic (repels water) instead of absorbing it like most other brake fluids. When you mixed SRF with your factory Honda fluid you possibly created a situation where a large volume of water was actually giving you the dead pedal that you claimed was outgassing. You obviously got the brakes plenty hot, so outgassing probably did happen, but I think your biggest complaint was possibly self induced. I am certainly not an engineer or a professional on this subject at all, but if you do some research, you will probably see why a full bleed, while running SRF is mandatory.
Oh I totally admit what I did with the brake fluid was lazy, dumb and stupid. I should have realized the factory fluid is terrible and done the full bleed procedure with SRF.
I enjoy your videos. Very useful information. Thanks
Glad you like them!
How do the FL5 brakes compare to the FK8? BTW love your content glad to see you back in a Type R
They are about the same, no improvement, if anything they might not get as much cooling as they did in the fk8
I didnt have any issues when i brought it to the track. Although, I have paragon rotors, stainless steel brake lines, SRF castrol brake fluid, titanium brake pads shims and paragon r5 brake pads pending to be installed soon. the real test will be on summer days.
Yea after a brake fluid and brake pad change, it is all good now
I had a similar experience when I tracked my mostly stock FL5 with the stock pads. The brake system light came on around lap 2 of every session and the pads were smoking afterwards. I did RBF600 fluid and Ti pad shims prior to that which is probably a little better off than what you ran with. Still experienced brake fade after a couple hard laps. I didn't mess around after that and got the Paragon 370mm big brake kit. That resolved the braking issues with this car 100%. Highly recommend getting a front big brake kit on this car. You don't want to be questioning whether your brakes are going to work while heading into a hard braking zone at 130mph, it's just not enjoyable IMO. The stock brakes work well on the street, look cool, and have great feel for a stock setup but they do not have enough thermal capacity for track duty, not even close.
Hi Elias, so since you didn't mentioned anything about overheating (yet), has that been solved in the FL5 compared to the FK8 you used to race with? Sure, you haven't modded this in any way yet, so that could come up later down the road?
Cheers 👍💪✌
FL5 still overheats. They are working on a solution that worked for the FK8 already.

So far I’m impressed with the cooling compared to the FK8. The overheating is still there, and it will only get worse with more power, but the most annoying problem so far is the way it fuel starves with the gas tank being more than half full
@@FlyinGato Under pressure in the gas tank?
Yea a really hard right hand turn makes it fuel starve, I’ll keep testing to see if I can fix it by keeping it topped off
Honda tunes their Civic for threshold breaking, which I like, cause balancing the car on its two front tires (on a FWD) never gets old. One of the other cars that had this inherent ability (which was surprise) was last generation Lexus RX350 (I worked at Lexus and was shuttling people around in it...highly recommend it, if u can keep if from getting stolen)... Dynamic on my current Elantra N is sweat, cause I can get it to rotate on lift-off (and save the front breaks), but I like Honda's tuning better, with a more planted rear end for extreme transitions (based on my 10th Gen Civic). There's a video circulation where FL5 went off the track, which makes me question the hardness of suspension setting in Sport+ mode, which is probably tuned for a F1 track and not these locals ones with bumps.
I’ve really come to realize that I am a FWD guy, I love throwing on the anchors as I bomb into a corner, then almost immediately throttling out to straighten the car. It’s tough on the brakes and on the front tires, but I can’t find a more fun ride.
@@FlyinGato Depending on the car, but when I upgraded my rear brakes, I was able to get it to step out before the apex (maybe too crazy for the fast section), but super cool being able to power out before the apex...Because of the track experience, I found myself tucking the nose in on highway ramps, by cranking the steering and tapping the brakes in mid sweeper, which made for a rapid exit. freaky when you're just driving a regular Civic with 6MT.
must agree, even on new basic models have crappy stuff in them. Basicly all cars nowdays ARE 4 wheeled multimedia stations!
After a little brake upgrade it has turned into what it should have been from the factory
Now we have GMO and Glyphosate in the food and water 😅
Yea I’m doing as much organic farming as I can on my 40 acres.
Just like the corrolla gr. And the gr. And the z.
Hard to blame the factories, honestly, but it was interesting to see how bad they were
Good 👍🏿 afternoon buddy…watching this as my partner drives, ya brakes are important same as the +R damping, heard through @Spamsubie, RSR does the Coil overs with integration for the FK8/FL5 drive modes Check em Out 😊👋🏿👋🏿👋🏿
I’ll look into the RSR, but I really like the dampers so far. I think the springs could use a bit of an upgrade
fwd and rwd are different!
That can't be good for your wheel bearings.
Probably not, but they survived a lot of punishment in the FK8
