Although it's pretty cringy now, the Chinese dress was a 'trend' back then it was considered a party/cocktail dress, and very much how they do now, give the same style and trends in miniture form for kids. They really didn't care for cultural appropriation
My great-grandmother used to live in Singapore and in China for many years as an English teacher, she received this lovely green dress with red trim and embroidery as a gift. It was a children's size and she gave it to my mother who passed it down to me. I really loved the dress but it never really felt right to wear it. I think I only wore it once or twice at home before I grew out of it. When we moved, my mom gave it away since it didn't fit anyone anymore and it was never really used. Looking back, when I was young we lived right next to the University's international family housing, and my three best friends were from Mongolia, Nepal, and China. They all liked the dress too, it might've been best if I was able to give it to one of them instead of donating it to goodwilll without it ever getting worn hardly at all.
Cultural appropriation is just an American thing. As long as you aren't acting like a bad person just when wearing a outfit from another country, it's fine. Literally if you ask anyone in Japan, if it's okay if foreigners wear a kimono or yukata, they will say it's beautiful if they do. It's nice that they take interest in our culture
“They are giving me Fred and George Weasley vibes. And they are ginger” As a huge Harry Potter fan, I am shocked I never made that distinction. Now that you mention it, these four would make excellent friends. Oh the mischief they would make. Filch would live in horror.

I wish I had gone to such a cool camp. my "camp" was essentially an urban summer daycare down the block from my house where I got locked in a room with kids my age until our parents picked us up. SO MANY CARDGAMES, so much boredom. I had a stay at home parent too, so I think they were just tricked by the word "camp" and assumed some magically woodland wonderland would appear in the parking lot when they left.
Same here. It was really just a small building with a school gym sized room with a tv, a tiny trailer, two small playgrounds (with barely anything to do except swings) and an open field next to a house.
Wait, I've never seen a cut of this movie where they actually show the needle going through the ear before. The TV version cut almost the whole scene, except for Hallie saying, "Trust me, this is not a big deal" and then straight to the outside shot with the screaming. My DVD has the full scene but you just have a close up of Hallie and see her arm gesture and then cut to Annie's face screaming.
this movie is based on the book by the famous German author Erich Kästner. he once said: "only if you stay a child at heart you are human." I love that mindset and try to live by it.
The Parent Trap is one of my favourite films! The comfort and nostalgia 😭❤️ I used to watch it religiously as a kid so I'm glad you enjoyed it now as an adult.
I loved this as a kid. Very much a sleepover movie. The alternative version of the movie title could very well be called “everyone needs to go to therapy: the movie”
Going to camp in the summer or during spring was a thing back when I was a kid in the 90's also Lindsey is older then me and I'm 40. In the beginning of the movie it was a flash back to what happen between the parents when they went on a cruise. They got married and got divorced in 2 years. The twins was conceived the second year and that's when the split the twins up then didn't spend any time together except for in the womb
HUGE crush on Lindsay Lohan as a kid. Huge, massive. We're almost the same age and she turned out gorgeous as an adult and I followed her career after this film debuted, even her music career. The parts of this film that stuck with me most were actually the bits where the kids reveal who they are to their newly discovered parents...especially Chessy just losing it when she realizes who Annie is. If it were me, that would have been a kick in the teeth, but Lisa Ann Walter sells it wonderfully. Honestly I thought we were robbed of the reaction of Dennis Quaid finding out that Hallie was the one who came home to see him; the man has drama chops, the reveal would have been emotional, or more so than it was here. The wine bottle scene actually stuck with me most...can you imagine that? You are so rich, so well-connected and so heartbroken over the end of your marriage that you BUY OUT an entire bottling of one wine varietal? Even if that was a micro-harvested single vat of wine, that could run you into the thousands if not HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars. It HAS to be cheaper to simply say "I was wrong, we can make this work, take me back." Because of that and few other things, this film has a bit of a disconnect with me as an adult...this is 'First World Problems' the movie, where the concept of horseback ridding through vineyards, shopping till you drop at Harrods, private boat dinners, traveling from London to San Francisco at a moments notice, the hired help joins you on your trip and you end up getting married on the QE2...TWICE...is no problem! O! 90s economy, take me back! I'll never stray again! Yeah but seriously WTF happened to Lohan? Everything was coming up roses and then BOOM, her entire career seemed to implode. Real shame, too. :-( (And no, I couldn't marry for money. I'm a wild animal that might allow himself to be tamed...but I will never be a pet. Too much of a power imbalance. And while I don't have any twins, I do enjoy camping. Just saying. ^_^. )
Yeah both parents being rich and successful really took me out a bit LOL it would've been sooo interesting if one parent was just middle/working class. I just know there would be so much jealousy from one twin, but class dynamics would be too much for a 90s comedy hahaha Also, yeah a shame about her :( I don't know what she's up to now, but I hope she is doing okay. It must suck trying to find work again after everything
@@SophiaPhannn Ooooo that would've been fascinating. So one of them IS from England and proper and a little snobby and all "I have class and you don't", while the other one is from, like, the Bronx or Cabrini Green or South Central LA and is all "My Dad is an auto-mechanic, which contributed to why YOUR mom left him...they were too 'different'. But hey, I'm grateful for everything he's been to me...in fact, he scraped together enough money to send me to this camp by working overtime for 6 months. I know we look alike, but our social dynamic/childhood experiences are a little less parallel than you think they are, hun." That would have been a ballsy movie for Disney to make in the late 90s.
As a kid first watching this, it didn't dawn on me how messed up the twin/splitting up thing was. But I remember my parents commenting to each other as we watched it, "Isn't it weird they just split up their twins like that and never wanted to know how their other kid was doing? I sure would. That's my kid!" Funny how we only pick up on these things once we're older. 😂

In all my 22 years of life I’ve NEVER heard anyone in media mention Napa. I was born and raised in Napa and I’ve grown up around vineyards and wine and everything grapes since my dad worked in vineyards so this kinda a made me real happy
There was one episode of Seinfeld where the A-plot was one character converting to Latvian Orthodox, because a woman he was into was barred from her family from seeing anyone outside the church. Latvian-Americans love that episode to this day, as Latvia is almost _never_ discussed in American media. Representation matters, people.
There really need to be more videos that compare dubs on this point. Dub analysis videos are all just bitching about how anime dub companies "ruin" the original.
Some things from this movie fused into my speech tendencies from watching it so much as a kid. Drunk mom's "upthairs" and "hand me my Evian" and I don't know why. Also, that colourful top from your cutaway moment with peanut butter and oreos is AMAZING omg
9:23 They explained this a bit more in the original 60s movie of 'The Parent Trap' starring Haley Mills as Sharon and Susan. They squabble ended up coming to slaps and then a full on fight at a dance for both the girls and the nearby Boy Scouts (where Sharon's cabin got revenge on Susan's cabin for the mess by cutting a huge triangle out of her dress, and the leader of the camp decided to follow Gilbert and Sullivan's logic of 'Let the Punishment Fit the Crime' so since they disliked each other so much their punishment is to be forced to spend all their time together, they'll either be miserable or will be forced to learn how to get along with each other.
anime & Asian aesthetics were big in the 90s - everyone was wearing Chinese & Japanese imagery & symbols on their clothes & jewelry, as well as chopsticks in their hair. it was a weird time.
I went to summer camp and there were a couple of kids who weren't Canadian. There was three girls from Paris, a bunch from the states, a guy from Australia and another from London. My brother went to another camp and there were tons of kids from different places. So that part in the movie is not that surprising.
I know and watched this movie's German version, as this is an "adaption" of Erich Kästner's "Das doppelte Lottchen." For one who read the book and watched the movie, the German one has a very special place in my heart, but this one also is really beautiful.

Fun fact: When they were at camp in Maine they were actually closer to London than California.
"this whole thing could have been solved with a little communication"
that can be said for literally every movie ever 😂 👍
Especially every hallmark film
I love it but this movie genuinely trips me out. Like these parents genuinely agreed to never talk to one of their children for life. And when they met them they still wanted to go back to that agreement. Like ????
No the parents said in the movie that they will visit during summers and holidays. They didn’t want to get together as a couple because of old feelings but yeah I guess it was bad that they separated the sisters as baby’s. I honestly never thought of that before, but honestly it’s just movie plot it makes it fun.
@Jalyn rich people smh.... lol
Lindsay Lohan deserved awards, I thought she was a fucking twin
I swear I thought they were different people. Also I feel super sad when people started to attack her when she started trying on a hijab
@@naylisyazwina6836 attacking someone isn't nice, but I think it's a fair question to ask _why_ ... especially if it was a Muslim person was asking her. Lindsey is an interesting case. she also did that thing when she tried to take a Middle Eastern child from their mother in the middle of NYC.
I feel empathy for her bc child stars are often abused & sexualized at an early age, or introduced to drugs, all of which screws with your brain, but I'm sure Lindsey would want to be held accountable for _some_ of her actions as well.
Everytime I watch this I can't help but say R.I.P to Natasha who plays the mom and Ronnie who plays the grandfather
I was sad when I heard about her death back then. ☹ RIP to both. 💕
I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THIS! I'M IN SHOCK!💔💔💔
I remember when natasha died
She was a great actress! And beautiful!
I love how chessy knew that Annie wasn’t Hal from the very beginning. I also loved her reaction more than both of the parents learning the truth. So touching. 😊
I feel like that happens alot with wealthy people because they hire help and whether they're a maid, nanny, butler, chef they become a surrogate parent to their boss's child. So it makes sense Chessy knew Hallie the most, same with Annie. Martin is close to her too.
This is a holdover from the Hayley Mills version of the movie, too. The housekeeper, Verbena, and the dog both knew from the beginning the girls had switched.
The woman who plays Elizabeth, the mom, died in 2009 after a skiing accident😭 the end scene where Halle says they don’t want to lose them again makes me tear up every time since she passed
R.i.p. to natasha richardson!
Both movies are actually based on a German Children’s book and it goes into more detail about why the parents split up in it and makes more sense
What's the name of the book?
Yesss I am German and it was one of my fav books/ stories as a child the book is called “doppeltes Lottchen” translating to “ doubled Lotties” also the parent trap was one of my fav movies!!
IS SOMEONE GOING TO STATE THE REASON OR WHAT???
HELP ARE YOU NOT GONNA EXPLAIN WHY 😭 THIS IS EVIL.
Omg why did I never realized that😂 Im German too
I vaguely remember Chinese-influenced clothing being an US fashion trend in the 90s. Not sure why, but yeah, I guess it was a thing.
It was a thing here in Sweden as well, there are photos of me and my friends wearing that kinda stuff until like 2010
And now it’s cultural appropriation and offensive🙄
Money money money. The cloths looked nice. They looked fancy, and they looked foriegn, so they must be expensive. Look at me and all my money. Social standing and importance. I would assume that would be the reason for the fashion trend at the time.
@@BooneErica lol for real. America is weird girl
Definitely. I remember having a black and blue dress with a dragon on it as a kid and seeing similar things back then.
I’ll be 26 within half a year so I need to start my plot to marry a millionaire, send his daughter to boarding school, and avoid any surprise twins and lizards
1.5 years for me, we got this 😎
Holy crap I did NOT realize that actress was Janice from Friends until you said that... I really need to rewatch this movie lol
Oh. My. God!
I realized the second time I saw it
This movie contains possibly my favorite scene in cinema as a whole, when Chessey realizes that she's the twin and the dad walks in right then. It's the most dramatic irony I've ever seen and I love it so much
The Chinese dress was a 90s thing. I had really wanted one, even before the movie came out. So many memories with this one
This and _It Takes Two_ were one of my MOST borrowed movies when I was kid. Though the ear piercing scene scared me away from piercing my lobes to the DAY! (Though cartilage piercings are okay? For some reason?)
But yeah, parents taking a twin/leaving a twin behind then never telling the other kid about them, is not unheard of- speaking about people in my own life. It seems like such a cruel premise for a such a lighthearted comedy
My cousin did the ear piercing thing by herself with her friend do not do it
Omg, "It Takes Two"! I couldn't recall the title, 'cause the Olsen Twins were *everywhere* back then. I rented so many of their VHS tapes, lol! Aaaaaaand now I feel like an ancient hag xDDD
this actually happened to me. I had a brother who I never knew existed until I was around 7 or 8 and it was the most shocking moment of my child life
@@yummi4tunekookie Nooo I’m only 18 and I love every one of their movies! I remember watching our lips are sealed, passport to paris, etc. on VHS. They were so iconic especially in New York minute.
Fun Fact: Meredith's and Chessie's actresses are BFFs, in real life!🥰
I love it when they get together for interviews lol
Ahhhh really? That’s so much fun cuz chessie can’t stand her in the movie especially when she rings the bell 😂
I thought her name was "jessie"
I was soooooooooo devastated when Natasha Richardson passed away. This movie was a part of my childhood.💐⛷😭
This film endeared her to me.
She was beautiful, and a very good actress! She was great as Liz in this, and caroline in maid in manhattan!
Every time I told Californians I lived in New York, they all assumed I meant the city. I lived in the Bay Area for a year and every single one assumed that. One even called me a liar cause I don't "have a New York accent."
Omg they wanted you to be a caricature
It's similar for Illinois, I have to clarify that I live nowhere near Chicago.
Yup I used to live in Washington. No not DC. No not Seattle. Now I live in Wyoming and I get a lot of blank looks and "Where's that" when traveling, even from Americans lol
Same here lol. I'm from New York and everyone asks if I've been to NYC. Like, no, when I lived there I didn't even have neighbors 😂
lol, yeah. I'm from Texas and lived abroad for a few years as a teen. Everyone was expecting a deep Southern accent, instead I have a generic American one. Sorry to disappoint everyone lol
This movie was my favourite as a child and it is still one of my favourites.
4:33 Oh gosh, is THAT why my Chinese friend never came to my sleepovers? She was one of my best friends in elementary school, but for some reason, her parents never let her come to my sleepovers. Never thought it was a cultural thing.
RIP to Natasha Richardson 😢
Also fun fact: Back in the day when I did competitive dance, Elaine Hendrix (Meredith) was one of the judges for a National competition that our studio competed in back in Vegas . She was really nice in person and I thought she was going to be mean because of the movie 😂 Even one of Britney Spears’ dancers was a judge and I recognized him from the Oops I Did It Again video. He even autographed my program. This was a great weekend for 10-year old me 😂

Parent Trap is awesome and Lindsey Lohan was great even in Mean Girls
Yeah she was a great young actress! Too bad she fell off the deep end :(
@@SophiaPhannn Yeah when you sit back and really think about it Lindsey Lohan was on a great run of movies before everything went off the rails it really sucks.

No one cares about cultural appropriation.
@@DrumL3000 yeah it doesn't matter. It just matters to American. No Indians will care if you wear a Sari unless you're trying to make Indians look bad
@@naylisyazwina6836 that was my point.
I was honestly mind blown when I found out Lindsay Lohan wasn't actually a twin. Queen really had me fooled- 😔✋
“They are giving me Fred and George Weasley vibes. And they are ginger”

I watched this film so many times as a child that I knew Jessie's realization scene word for word.
As a adult, this film always makes me tear up a little, not just for naustalgic reasons, but because of the passing of Natasha Richardson. Gone far too soon :'(
My mom tells me every time she goes on her travels, whenever she tells people she’s from Massachusetts, they automatically assume Boston. We actually live an hour and a half outside of Boston. It’s happened so many times though, Mom just stops correcting them and rolls with it.
Given how complicated our town names are... it's smarter to just say "Boston," hahaha.
I always wondered how a group of seven years old girls can LIFTED huge beds and put them on a roof. It's still a mystery today X)
I agree that the American twin is a bully and the British one is nice and elegant. Both are good at fencing though and playing tricks on their parents.
_Actually,_ they were pre-teens, not 7.
But also _actually,_ doesn't change the fact that getting them up there still seems plum ridiculous.
They were tweens fam, not 7😂
@@christopherb501 also there were older girls at the camp who could have helped them ( I doubt it but still)
I remember as a kid thinking that Meredith was the ultimate villain, but now that I'm about her age, I can kinda relate to her. She just wants to marry a rich handsome guy and his kids are getting in the way lol (though one cannot ignore her terrible qualities)
That's what I'm saaaayyyinnggg. Even if she wasn't a terrible person, those girls still would've tried to get rid of her because they wanted their parents together. So really, Meredith is the victim here HAHA
This lol. 😅
@@SophiaPhannn Not really. She would've abused the kids. You really want to victimize a child abuser?
Summer Rose She didn't even do anything too bad. It was inferred that she wanted them out of the way since they would be teens soon but they started messing with her
wanting your man's kids to get out of the way is a shitty thing too. It's THEIR dad that you wanna marry lol, you need to get their blessings for life
The old lady who says Hello pet! Is the original woman who plays Vicki (Meredith) in the 60's version of the parent trap
11:34 I can't tell you how many times I've seen this movie, so why is this the time I get goosebumps at this scene?!
ITS CRAZY HOW YOUVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE, childhood classic
Hollywood put Lindsay through the ringer. Hope she's alright.
She's doing a lot better now!
(And no, I couldn't marry for money.
I just know there would be so much jealousy from one twin, but class dynamics would be too much for a 90s comedy hahaha
Also, yeah a shame about her :( I don't know what she's up to now, but I hope she is doing okay.
Meredith's mom was in the original Parent Trap as the 'Meredith' in that movie, even though her name was Vicky
RIP Natasha Richardson you were so beautiful and such a beautiful soul 💜
The parent trap is so well paced!
22:38 “he had a smile that made me go weak in the knees, if you can imagine that”

For some weird reason when I was younger I thought the actress for Annie’s and Hallie’s mom was princess Diana-
They actually look alike!
My Latin ass would also not have been at that camp 😂 the most relatable tiktok I have seen was the one that it said “My mom said that I can’t sleep over because you have a dad and brothers and uno nunca sabe” 🤣🤣🤣 and also all the scary camp meetings
You should watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit! It’s an amazing movie technically and just a great watching experience!
That movie is so good!
Parent trap is just an american adaptation of a german novel by Erich Kästner called "Das doppelte Lottchen" (or Lottie and Lisa in english) from the 1940s. Btw "The NeverEnding Story" was also based on a german novel "Die unendliche Geschichte" by Michael Ende, who was actually against the release of the movie.
The scene where they're all saying goodbye in the rain, and Nat King Cole, "Everytime We Say Goodbye" is playing, I love that scene. Me being extra asf, whenever my twin sis and me say goodbye, I start playing this song 😂😂
Around 4:30 mark, my Vietnamese mom was different. She allowed me to go to a church summer camp (I think it lasted around 5 days to a week.) but living with my Vietnamese grandparents was a whole different story. No sleepovers. It took me a long time for me to convince to let me go on a trip for my club in another state for 3-4 days. I never went on my senior trip which was to Disneyland or Disney World (I can’t remember) and I never went to senior prom either 😂 I went once to a soccer game at night but it was for extra credit for Spanish class 😂
The way that I would get in trouble on purpose to get to stay in the *isolation cabin* lol
I was obsessed with the original parent trap(1969) with Hailey Mills and the sequels 2-3-honeymoon in Hawaii when this one came out I was 9 and made sure to be extra well behaved and begged my mom to get it for me the day it came out then watched it 1000x I love that the girlfriend in the original (Vicki) played Meredith mom (Vicki)

Sophia Phan Very good reaction. Watching those clips just made me wanna pop in my DVD copy. I could watch that movie forever and never get bored. Soooo great a family movie it is. It has aged like fine wine. Keep up the good work.
OMG I LOVE THE PARENT TRAP!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES EVER!!! I enjoyed this sm!!
Fun fact, the actress playing Meredith's mom originally played that character in the original version, she even says I'm Vicky, the exact same way.
No way! Wow!
This is a good start for getting out of the Disney animated hole. Another movie I’d recommend is Hook. It stars Robin Williams as a grown up Peter Pan who forget all about Neverland and returns there.
Also there’s Dustin Hoffman playing Hook so lots of fun!
Slight animation connection: Dante Basco (the actor who played Rufio) is the voice of Zuko in Avatar: the Last Airbender and General Iroh in Legend of Korra.
The cabin friend with the brown hair and freckles that you thought was Alison Stoner was in one of Mary Kate and Ashley’s You’re Invited video series episodes it was the iconic sleepover one that also featured a very young Fi from So Weird
Fun fact: the woman who played aunt Vicky in this movie. Played the villain in the original and her name was Vicky
I cried with every reunion the first time I watched this as an adult. It hits so different
In all my 22 years of life I’ve NEVER heard anyone in media mention Napa. I was born and raised in Napa and I’ve grown up around vineyards and wine and everything grapes since my dad worked in vineyards so this kinda a made me real happy
Yeah I feel like Napa is just an area that NorCal ppl or rich ppl know about 😂
There was one episode of Seinfeld where the A-plot was one character converting to Latvian Orthodox, because a woman he was into was barred from her family from seeing anyone outside the church. Latvian-Americans love that episode to this day, as Latvia is almost _never_ discussed in American media.
Representation matters, people.
Movie Trivia: The woman playing Meredith's mother (Vicki) is the woman who played the Meredith character in the original film.
The Brazilian dub is a gem. Meredith is so over the top, makes it much more fun.
There really need to be more videos that compare dubs on this point. Dub analysis videos are all just bitching about how anime dub companies "ruin" the original.

My first introduction to Elaine Hendrix
She’s gorgeous still at 50 ❤
This is one of those movies that I can recite line for line because of how much I watched it as a kid.
Can we talk about that scene when the girl in the tie dye pulled out the duffle and Lindsay's character was just like " thats my kind of women "
Fun fact Lisa Walter who plays Chessy years later had her own set of twins on October 11th.
Holy crap! That's awesome!
At 5:57 the girl with the white hair Tie was Bonnie from Vampire Diaries
Some things from this movie fused into my speech tendencies from watching it so much as a kid. Drunk mom's "upthairs" and "hand me my Evian" and I don't know why.
Also, that colourful top from your cutaway moment with peanut butter and oreos is AMAZING omg
Hehe thank you! It's like the only bright colorful thing in my wardrobe
6:16 I love how this whole scene is just Lindsay Lohan roasting herself 😂
I love how their camp punishment was to get to stay in their own private cabin 😂
5:57 No not Alyson Stoner (she was too young). However, next to that girl is Kat Graham aka Bonnie Bennet from The Vampire Diaries.
Alyson stoner was 5 when this film came out!
I clicked on this video because I read the title and thought “huh, Merideth was always my favorite character “ 🔥💗
Omg oh yeah the chopsticks in the hair 😱 it definitely bled into the 2000s too like when Gwen Stefani hired those Japanese girls to walk with her lmao
I watched both versions of the parent trap. The older one was more unique, but the newer one is more nostalgic
I went to summer camp and there were a couple of kids who weren't Canadian. There was three girls from Paris, a bunch from the states, a guy from Australia and another from London. My brother went to another camp and there were tons of kids from different places. So that part in the movie is not that surprising.
When Hallie flew to England with Annie's passport, she was breaking the LAW!
I know and watched this movie's German version, as this is an "adaption" of Erich Kästner's "Das doppelte Lottchen." For one who read the book and watched the movie, the German one has a very special place in my heart, but this one also is really beautiful.
"Why did you stand up?!"
Because comedy, lol!
FOR THE BIT!!! ❤
another film i think you would love to watch is twitches an twitches too they both have the Mowry twins in it
Jeez. That scene where she hugs her mom for the first time always gets me
Ahhhh, I love this movie! one of my favourites growing up
Who else had the deception of discovering that neither Lindsey Lohan or Dove Cameron had twins?
Fun facts: The boy who is there because he thought it was a boys camp is Lindsay Lohan’s brother and also Kat Graham who plays Bonnie in The Vampire Diaries is in this movie (Annie’s friend) 😁
