took me years to realise that her mother leaving her home alone five days a week to go and play bingo (the book confirmed that she drove to a town 5 or 8 miles away just to play) without calling a babysitter or getting a neighbour to keep an eye on her was child neglect and even if it couldn't get her arrested would definitely be grounds for a child protection agency to come around. Mrs Phelps the librarian was worried when Matilda told her about her mother but felt it was best not to get involved in other peoples lives - I guess that's another reason why she told her about getting a library card, even though she'd still be home alone most days of the week she wouldn't be out in the town or crossing a busy and possibly dangerous highway everyday.

3:47 Her brother Michael doesn't bully her in the book, but he also never defends her from their parents or stands up for her or asks her if she's ok or talks to her or anything. In fact the only interaction between them is when he waves goodbye at the end. He doesn't seem to get or mind that what his dad is doing is illegal, just thinks it's cool what his dad is able to do. In the musical he barely moves out of the chair and only ever repeats the last word of what someone else has said - little worried about him in fact.

Most teachers don’t start out that way. They become jaded. But they already worked so hard to get there, so they stay. Plus, most people aren’t lucky enough to have jobs they actually like. We’re conditioned to tough out a miserable job.
As for having kids, well, most children are accidental, not choices. And a lot of people don’t want to opt out, so they keep the kid. And that will probably lead to abuse. Which brings us to Trunchbull. She’s just an abusive psychopath who openly wants to hurt children. That’s why she’s there.

I actually worked as a babysitter through college for many of my mom and sister's coworkers because I was so good with children. Children can't really help being who they are, their personality is forming and they need both freedom and guidance to do it well and that's on their caretakers. Kids, like them or not, deserve all the care and happiness.

While I was fortunate enough to have a decent home life I knew what it was like to be friendless and feel powerless to change it, except when I escaped into fantasy worlds (Whether through reading or just mentally). I knew how it felt to have adults condescend to you and treat you below your age. So I was struck dumb by how encouraging and altogether lovely Matilda was when I discovered it in my teens. Definitely something I intend to show my soon-to-be niece or nephew when they're old enough. :)

This movie really a helped me as a kid, but also highlighted my toxic and abusive parents so I connected with Matilda. My childhood was much different/more dangerous, but seeing the differences between a loving parent figure and obviously abusive parents, showed me that my childhood wasn't healthy. or normal. On top of that, Ms. Honey awakened my lesbian fantasies early on. HUGE CRUSH. Even beyond what I've already mentioned, watching it helped me grow my imagination. Before (and now that im older and more depressed), my imagination was stunted by the harsh realities, but it helped me imagine things like flying, being telekenis, etc. which in return helped me cope.

Even just watching the parts you included here - have so many feelings! One of the saddest is Miss Honey saying "oh I grew up & got away" but then still having that mindset where her immediate reaction to Matilda's suggestion with the chocolate was "Oh I can't - she'd know." Oh - you didn't really get away. Not psychologically or emotionally - heck, not even physically considering it's a similar power dyanamic with their 'jobs' at the school.
And the acting moment that totally deserves an Oscar in my mind is Mara Wilson by Matilday being like "oh you were the kid in the story!" and then realizing that this one adult/person who's really noticed & tried to help her (even more than the librarian) went through this, is related to the Trunchbull, is still suffering under the Trunchbull. Just the sheer talent with that horrified "No." as the camera's on her facial realization is epic.

I think that the Trunchbull wouldn't have been so afraid if she wasn't guilty of causing the death of Magnus. She feared because it seemed someone knew her secret. Imagine you kill someone, and think you got away with it, you terrorize their beloved daughter into adulthood, then all of a sudden they start haunting you from beyond the grave.
"I will get you like you got me. THAT IS A PROMISE!" She deserved all the terror she got. Miss Honey was treated so horribly for so long, but she remained kind and compassionate. Her reward was a child like Matilda. Matilda was treated like a burden and hated by her family her entire existence. After freeing Miss Honey from her cruel aunt, her reward was an adult who loved her. I love the new musical movie version, but this Miss Honey was far more daring and stood up for herself more. The new Miss Honey was much worse off, she'd lost a lot of her self esteem from the treatment, and she lived in a sad little shack in the musical.
I love both though. This one just hits so hard with some of the things though.

She'd hoped to have kids so I could babysit, "wear off on them," so she could have, "an entire flock just like you." But at the appointment when she asked if she was heathy enough to be able to start a family, she found out her cancer was out of remission. It was really... hard.
