    I've never seen that before, he must of been reusing that plug for eons or something. I tend to clean and reuse my plugs (not for eons but a couple seasons or so), I will be stopping that practice immediately, not worth all that for a 3 buck plug.
    Thanks for the vid neighbour, it opened my eyes.

    Yep, that's an oddity. I have also seen that kind of damage in those series saws, caused by the wrist pin bearing cage breaking a small section off, then being ingested into the combustion chamber. It looks exactly like that.

    I know I am overdoing it and overthinking it but, if I get the chance and am able I like to start each season with new filters and plugs on everything and fresh gas of course. I have had a roto tiller with fresh gas on empty tank and new plug put in it before starting one season took one pull and fired right up after sitting all winter, of course it usually never took many more pulls than that.

    In my opinion this is not a weld failure directly. The electrode broke of just outside the spot weld. Remember that if the weld failed it would not leave this perfectly rectangular fracture zone but a wider more uneven shaped one. Fracture in a piece of solid steel is often related to undesired changes in the steels microstructure. When steel is heated to a cherry red color and cooled rapid in water, oil or with compressed air the molecule structure in the steel will lock together in a that state that makes it very hard and brittle. If the spark plug was brand new and failed without no reason this could very well be traced back to the manufacturer. Adjusting the spark gap on a plug with brittle ground electrode will push it even closer to the inevitable failure.
    This could also be explained by incorrect treatment of the spark plug after it was bought. Work hardening because of repeatedly bending the electrode back and forth is my number one suspect.

    I never would have thought of that part of a spark plug breaking off. Maybe welding them on isn't the best way after all.

  • @Searcher356
    @Searcher356 8 років тому

    If that was the correct spark plug (reach), then the only way i could see that happening is if the cylinder barrel is shimmed too low, or the Con Rod has stretched, or the rod bearings shot. Or the wrong piston, I suppose. Any of these things in this engine? If none of the above, I suppose a bad assembly at the plug manufacturer. What brand?

    Hey, listen to this coincidence, I got a used craftsman lawnmower with a Tecumseh engine that wasn't running. I got it running by cleaning the carburetor. Then there was a gas leak at the carburetor bowl. I replaced the bowl and gasket, gas leak fixed, then a oil leak sprouted, it turned out, there was no gasket at the dipstick tube. Put a gasket on, oil leak fixed. But then another gas leak sprouted, this time, it was where the primer bulb was, haven't fixed it yet, but i'll try. By the way, I'm 13 and I got a lawnmower running.

    This is exactly what happened to my car two years ago. I still feel the 2100€ bill from the repairs. Does anyone knows how could such a thing have happened ? I asked my mechanic. He basicly rebuilt the top of the engine (replaced the cylinder head), but didn't know how such a thing could have happened and I find very little information about it on the internet. Some say the cylinder would have ran lean.
    When I first replaced the spark plugs, the one that was on the cylinder where the problem occured was black. The other ones were like new. The car was not always running fine. Then I used some injector cleaner additive on my gas and it ran better after that. When I replaced the spark plug again 2 weeks ago, all of them looked fine after about 12 000 miles. Any tips ? Thanks !

      THIS just happened inn a car I JUST purchased while checking the spark plugs yesterday for a fresh maintenance start. Plug in Cylinder 4 was LOOSE when taking coil off and there was lots of black soot/carbon build up on intake head walls. I unscrew plug fully & there’s NOT “L” TIP, just center nipple! I made a “straw funnel” & attached it to my vaccum and put it in the cylinder to suck up any debris. I’m not sure if plug tip is in there or not, even when test driving the car for 40, mins and driving it hard…... The Engine seems to run fine. There are NO CEL’s. I ordered a endoscope off Amazon so I can see what’s in the cylinder for sure. What’s the chances the spark plug tip went out the exhaust valve and into the car converter?! 😅 wishful thinking, I know….. 😢😢

    Will a spark plug still spark even though the electrode is broken.

    • @tier3rd375
      @tier3rd375 8 років тому

      It could. The sparks will try to find the nearest piece of metal. Like the piston.

  • @Wayoutthere
    @Wayoutthere 8 років тому +2

    How is that even possible for a plug to fire like that?

    • @tier3rd375
      @tier3rd375 8 років тому

      The spark could have jumped to the piston.

    • @Wayoutthere
      @Wayoutthere 8 років тому

      Ah right. Could those high voltage sparks also eat away at the piston? Or did the repeated bouncing of that piece of metal created the damage?

    • @tier3rd375
      @tier3rd375 8 років тому

      It's probably the repeated bouncing of the ground electrode because if the sparks damaged the piston, it would probably affect the one area the sparks were the sparks were jumping to because the sparks will likely jump to the nearest piece of metal around.
