Many thanks for the excellent info. My flexicom had the F9 and the startup did the four noises but no pump. Apparently it always runs the pump on startup just to make sure it is working. Took the pump motor from another flexicom and plugged it into the circuit board. This one did whirr on startup so it was the pump. Changing the pump was not too difficult. You have to drop the accessory housing out of the bottom of the boiler housing then you remove the four allen key bolts. You need to drain the boiler as much as possible as water spurts out when you loosen these bolts so a bucket will have to be put under the boiler to collect this. The replacement pump motor with its impeller (these seem to be available new on ebay) is then bolted back onto the pump and the cable plugged into the PCB. A bit of a thorough dry all round and a refilling then the boiler worked perfectly. Without Dave I wouldn't have had the clue that it was the pump. A really helpful video. Thanks.
Thank you, Dave, this saved my life!! Got home late last night to a freezing cold house. Discovered the F9 fault and while searching found you. Managed to get the pressure up and now have a lovely warm house again. Many thanks for sharing your expertise :)
Thankyou Dave...My boiler is working again...pressure sensor was stuck...increased pressure only from 1.5bar to 1.6bar and boiler came back to life. Thumbs up from me mate.
Phew!! Thick snow and ‘feels like’ temperatures of -10 here in Norfolk today, and I wake up to a freezing house and ‘F9’ flashing on my boiler. Thank goodness for this tutorial...probably saved me a fortune in call out charges 😳 House now warming up nicely, thanks Dave!!
Great video, thank you for making it. Turned out to be the pump, unplugged it and checked the resistance, it was open circuit. Glow worm now supply a new Grundfos pump which replaces the old Wilo pump. Heads not the same so had to replace the whole thing.
Absolute legend! I had a SMART meter installed today and after the engineer left and I turned the boiler on it was showing F9 code. I planned to call the service company tomorrow and feared a big bill...but then I came across this video and it worked. Boiler working and hot water back on. Thanks so much Dave ☺️
Thanks very much! Glow worm wanted me to rebuild my boiler, home insurance wanted to charge an excess on emergency cover and local gas fella wanted ££££ to come a look at it. Your video sorted it right out. Thanks very much.
Thanks very much for the clear and concise instructions, this fixed my F9 issue but I’ll call out an engineer to give it a service, it was only done in Feb 20 as well!
Dave, a huge thank you for the advice. Your pressure increase tip worked first time and the boiler is now working as per normal. Even more appreciated as it's Easter Sunday and the call-outs would have been even more pricey!
Thank you David. Excellent advice. Much appreciated. I saw the F9 this morning and until I saw your video I was worried. Turning the taps until it went from 0.6 to around 1.2 worked a treat. Maybe I have to bleed the radiators but for now, I've got the hot water back. Cheers.
Big shout out and thumbs up! Your videos saved me a fortune in engineers fees and enabled me to better understand and fix my flexicom. Pressure sensor tip was epic
Thanks so so much Dave! Just got back from holiday- around 2:15am and we had no hot water and all we were looking forward to was having a hot shower after all our travelling. With your help we manager to get out hot water going! Big thank you!
Absolute hero, thank you so much it worked great. F9 flashing at 1.4bar raised to 1.8 and started working fine. Bled all the radiators and was some air in them so worth doing. Now at 1.5 bar and heating and hot water working!! We tried to call 3 plumbers who gave us a weeks call out as they were so busy. Thank you for making this video as was simple to fix even for a novice! Cheers!
Awesome video , it wasn’t the flow pressure switch but turned out to be the pump like you said ! Got the new one , at first it seems like you have to change the whole housing as the bolt thickness is completely different , but you can screw the OLD bolts through the new pump holes ! Happy days thank you 🙏😁
Thanks for this Dave, New Years Eve and my heating goes! You saved me from passing the new year in shivering in my coat. The first solution you offered fixed it for me. Thanks again.
So grateful to you for making this video, it cleared my fault straight away. I'd read my user guide and oculdn't find anything so when I found your video it was a God send
This is so useful thank you!! Got my boiler working on Xmas day (such a relief!) but now everyday I need twiddle the taps every morning to get it going 😞
Hi check for air in your radiators if there isn’t loads of air and it’s still giving problems then arrange a boiler service but tell him you want the pressure sensor changing and the expansion vessel checking. Refer him to my video. Dave
Dave You are very clear and well explained for anyone to understand and being technical person I can understand the logic behind the steps explained by you.
Thanks Dave. Had continual F9 faults in the morning with my Ultracom 30 Xsi and getting more regular. Could start using your fix by adding some water. Got the BG boiler engineer who said the expansion vessel was the issue which he recharged. He also did the annual service which was long overdue to Covid. Next morning F9 again. Was reluctant to start messing about with the boiler even though I am an engineer but decided to pull the pressure sensor. As you suggested it was clogged solid with gunk. Cleaned it out, reinstalled and F9 faults no more. Thanks. If clogged pressure sensors on these boilers are such an issue why don't they inspect them as part of the annual inspections as you do?
Hi Dave, I have a similar fault with F9 showing on my ultracom cxi. The pipe to the left of the boiler with a rubber hose attached developed a small leak, I removed this and found the pipe had a blockage, full of large rusty particles, I cleaned the pipe out, removed the pressure sensor and cleaned it took the pump head off for a check and was clean inside and pump vanes manually free to rotate by hand. On startup, I can hear the diverter valve working, but the pump doesn't startup or make any kind of start-up noise. Pressure reading 1.5 bar. Is the pressure displayed a reading from the pressure sensor that is causing the F9 fault or is read from another sensor? What are your thoughts on this? is it a faulty pressure valve or pump? I tested the pump head with it dismantled from the pump housing and hit the reset to see it would startup, nothing happened! Hoping you can point me in the right direction.
Hi Rob if the boiler was drained down then the display should have said 0.0 bar or close to it. If the pressure is under 0.5bar then the boiler or the pump won’t work!. Once the pressure is above 0.5 bar then the pump should spin. It’s tricky to test the pump but if you’re comfortable with electrics you could push a live and neutral in the pump plug! Is the pump a Wilo pump? If so they are a bit dodgy! Dave
@@g20gasservices thanks for the reply Dave, when you say push live and neutral in the pump plug what does that mean? I did notice that maybe there was broken connection at the pump as when I moved the wire sometimes the pump would start up, but then slowly cut out again, I thought this was a coincidence? It is a silo pump. Could there be a fault with the pump wiring?
Hi Rob it’s usually the red switch on the boiler that goes faulty. If you mess with it the pump might start but it won’t last! You’ll need a new pump. Unfortunately they don’t supply Wilo pumps anymore so you’ll have to fit a Grundfoss but it comes with the housing as well so it’s a bigger job than just changing the pump head!
@@g20gasservices okay thanks fella, pump is working, just a very silent pump, going to clean out the plate to plate exchanger. The display is now only reading the water pressure, as I set it and the boiler seems to be stuck there even after many resets.
Hi Dave. Our Church Manse boiler (Flexicom Glo-Worm) is showing the F09 fault even when the pressure is at 1.4bar. Is there a way to adjust the point at which it faults?
I've done all this and it works... the hot water that it, as soon as I turn on the heating then that's when the F9 fault appears. Time to call a professional before winter hits?
I used to have loads of problems with F9 sensors on a Flexicom SX30. Many pressure sensors replaced but eventually found that from the first installation - the boiler internal expansion vessel had been over-pressurised. With the boiler main system depressurised, the expansion was at 1.8 Bar. The manual says it should be 0.5 Bar. Once reset to 0.5 Bar, I have never had another F9 fault. This was not a combi boiler, just a system boiler.
Hey Dave I have a glow worm flexi com 24cx I have a timer fitted to the boiler but no thermostat. My radiators have the thermostat valves on but I would like to fit a room thermostat. Is it possible to fit a room thermostat to this boiler model and if so which one would you recommend? Many thanks Peter
Hi Peter yes you can connect a thermostat to your flexicom. You can use either a wired or a wireless. The tricky thing is removing the wiring plug that goes into the boiler! Follow the wire that goes in the boiler on the left hand side and remove the 2 screws that have a torx head on them! This will allow the black plug to be pulled out downwards. Inside the plug are the wiring terminals that you need. Dave
hello dave?we have a gloworm 18hx, boiler. only three years old? F22 keeps coming up on the panel..reset it? but no heating. tried to check the pressure, but its a sealed unit from the bottom of the boiler? if its a major job? do we need to call an engineer in? some are charging £99 for the 1st half an hour... extortion or what. help please? 😩
stephen mendoza it will be the pump or no water in the system that's causing the problem! Yours probably isn't a pressurised system. I think you need to call an engineer! Dave
I have a Glow worm flexicon 24CX, the display is the same as the one in your video, and when we use the heating, for some reason the pressure showing in the display keeps going up and up slowly and never decreases. within a week, as we use the heating, the pressure showing in the display goes up to 2.7 bars. I then need to use one of the drain off valves in one of the radiators and drain some water in order to bring the pressure down to 1.0-1.2 bars. What is causing this? I'm monitoring this situation and when using just hot water in any of the taps, it doesn't make the pressure to go up and up like when using the heating.
Rui Nunes hi inside the boiler is an expansion tank which takes up the expansion of the central heating water when it gets hot. This tank should be pressured with air however if the air leaks out or if the tank is punctured then the pressure will increase when the heating is on. You need to book an engineer when we’re out of lock down. Regards Dave
thanks dave fitted pressure sensor today all working now, i had a problem fitting in new part so i swapped the rubber seal and went in easy, please advise me which grease to use and do you put it in the small hole,
Hi Dave, unsure as to whether you're able to help, (wish you were further south of the country) we have a flexicom HX18 had a code of F1 and F4 and occasional F22, engineer has been out, replaced the ignitor, followed by the PCB and gas valve, now our boiler makes an awful churning and vibrating racket when we fire it up, engineer says it's the heater exchanger and nothing further can be done, needs a new unit, any ideas, appreciate any input that you might be able to offer ?. thanks Joe
Webowebo8 hi Joe unfortunately it sounds like you've had a bad engineer!! F1 and f4 is usually the electrode that needs replacing!! The noise you're describing is the gas valve out of calibration. It needs setting up with a flue gas analyser. You need someone that knows what they're doing!!I know you'll now have spent a lot of money but might be best getting glow worm to sort it!! They do a fixed price repair of about £250!!! Dave
David Lane Hi Dave, thank you so much for taking the time to reply, fully appreciate that time is money and you taking the time is nice to see in this day and age. The engineer has replaced the ignitor and the gas valve and checked the pressure/flow? but it's a weird one, the noise has now gone, since I wrote this morning and furthermore, it seems to be working OK again now ???.. we have, since this morning however, been onto British Gas to get a quote for a new boiler as we're both fearful of it packing up altogether over the coming weeks into Xmas ...
Webowebo8 I can understand why you would want to change it however there really isn't much in the boiler so once it's fixed it should be fine for years to come! If you've decided you want a new one go one gassaferegister.co.uk and you'll be able to find installers close to you that should be able to give you a better price than BG! If you buy from BG they will only give you 1 year warranty but if you get anyone else you will get between 5 and 10 years!! Dave
Hi Dave a customer is having the same problem cleaned everything out checked pressure vessel done every thing an F9 fault relates to, screen now gos blank and flashers with fault on reset I can only think it is the PCB? you comments please
Great video, the re-pressurising has worked on my boiler sx18 a few times in the last 5 years. When that failed I find just wiggling the flow sensor connector has helped. Today I found that wasn't enough and had to fix the connector by squeezing the pins together. As an electrician I have often found simple problems are due to poor connections, the connector on the flow switch is a cheap edge connector onto the circuit board edge of the flow switch. Any work to remove and clean or replace the switch may mask a simple issue with this connector that could present as an intermittent fault.
Andrew Benjamin thanks for that it’s food for thought! I’ve got a couple of customers that have had their boiler replaced by glow worm because of this intermittent fault! Cheers
Dave, we have a 2008 Felxicom 24cx. Will a new Flexicom 30cx go on the same pipework without requiring any alterations? I ask because we need a new boiler but the old pipework is behind a built in kitchen and its going to be a nightmare to change. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video Dave. I've been keeping the heating and hot water going using the top-up trick for a week now, and I've got a spare sensor. How do I drain the boiler? Is it the same as draining the whole system?
Hi assuming you’re confident to work on your boiler here’s a breakdown. Close the flow and return valves under the boiler using a 4mm Allen key. Open both the drain cocks that are on the flow and return valves and put 2 buckets under them. Take the cover off and remove the condensate trap then remove the clip and the pressure sensor. Quickly push in the new sensor as water will come out. Job done. Good luck
G20 Gas Services thanks for replying !! wasnt sure , its making its normal start up noise sounding pretty normal but just not firing , i noticed the pressure on the display is reading 1.3 but doesnt move when the pump starts ???
G20 Gas Services yea tried that , ive ordered a pressure sensor , ill just have to replace it and see if what happens , the boiler is only 5yr old , the lad who usually does the service on it retired this year , thanks again
G20 Gas Services hey Dave , turnes out it was a pressure problem , the reason i didnt realise this is cause the display was telling me pressure was at 1.3 bar , but when when i pulled the blow off (just to see), noting happened , so i pressurised the system as normal & she fired up , happy days .... why would i get a wrong pressure reading on display ??
G20 Gas Services thanks for the quick reply. I searched for the new pump price and it looks to be around £180 for the part. Just need to get a quote for fitting it.
Hi Dave Good video I've an ultra com 30sxi and keep getting the f9 I've replaced the sensor. Added an expansion vessel. Prv.Changed the pump. Pressure is constant now but still getting f9. . I've two zones. The boiler calls but doesn't fire up always and keeps trying to f9. Sounds like some air but I've bled all the rads. I haven't looked at the filter yet. Any other ideas? Thanks
I have a glow worm flexicom 30cx same as this in your video,my problem is I have no hot water, central heating is ok. On the digital display there is no tap symbol when I turn on to continuous??ANY ideas m8.
Hi you really need to get a heating engineer to look at it as it could be several things and unless you’re in front of the boiler it’s very difficult to diagnose. Dave
dave, superb video. i had a new pressure sensor fitted tuesday, old one full of dirt, plumber thought that was the cause of the f9. two hours after he left f9 again, he told me to bleed the rads as there must be air in them which there was in one. f9 appeared a few more times that day i kept resetting and checking pressure which were all ok. it ran for two days perfect then f9 ! i thought it was solved. do i just keep going here as it may just be some more dirt in the system ?
Hi Stephen if you press the reset button and watch the pressure it should increase by at least 0.1 bar after about 6 seconds when the pump kicks in. If it doesn’t ever show a pressure increase then maybe expansion vessel pipe blocked or expansion vessel low in pressure. If it does show an increase then something must be sticking occasionally to cause f9! Could be sensor or pump. Good luck
G20 Gas Services I’ve had a new expansion vessel a few weeks ago and pressure valve this week. The pressure does go up when it is reset. I have noticed that when you reset the boiler for the first two seconds the bar shows 1.0 which is different to the 1.4 bar when the boiler is at rest. Are they two different readings and if so could that be the answer?
If the pressure goes up to 1.4 bar when the pump is running proves that the problem isn’t with the expansion vessel or air in rads! I’d say it’s still pressure sensor problems maybe caused by your system water! A flush and a double dose of inhibitor would be my next move!
Hi Dave, I have a glow worm flexicom 18sx and I have an intermittent problem. It comes up with fault code F9 and after I reset it sometimes it works fine straight away but sometimes it will continue to say F9 but a couple of days later it will work again for about two days then the fault code comes up again! I’ve had an engineer come and take a look but it worked fine while they were there! Any ideas? Thanks!
phplumbing53 yes on the older cxi boilers F9 is a generic code so it will throw it up if the pcb doesn’t know what the fault is. F5 is the overheat stat. Dave
Many thanks for the excellent info. My flexicom had the F9 and the startup did the four noises but no pump. Apparently it always runs the pump on startup just to make sure it is working. ok dave? thanks for the reply?
Regards Dave
thanks dave fitted pressure sensor today all working now, i had a problem fitting in new part so i swapped the rubber seal and went in easy, please advise me which grease to use and do you put it in the small hole,
Hi Garry I use silicone grease
Just fixed it , thank you for the video ;)
Dave
Again, thank you very much :-)
Hi Dave a customer is having the same problem cleaned everything out checked pressure vessel done every thing an F9 fault relates to, screen now gos blank and flashers with fault on reset I can only think it is the PCB? you comments please
The big red one what does the fault say on reset? Is it a flexicom? Dave
@@g20gasservices Ultracom sxi always shows f9 its intermittent runs for an hour then gos to fault
Thank you so much you’ve saved us money and frost bitten toes 🥶👍🏻👍🏻 It worked straight away.
Cheers
@@g20gasservices It is quite easy to pop the connector apart and squeeze the pins together with needle pliers and it grips much better when refitted.
Andrew Benjamin thanks for that. Is it two clips on the side? I’ve not got my glasses on!!😂
Where are you in the country David?
Thanks you saved my life today
Thank you, the pressure tip solved my problem
Thank you so much Dave your expert and kind knowledge has provided me and my girlfriend with a warm Christmas. Kindly appreciated. 👍
Michael Colgan glad to help. Have a great Xmas
Dave how do I bleed the radiators ?
Dave, we have a 2008 Felxicom 24cx. Will a new Flexicom 30cx go on the same pipework without requiring any alterations? I ask because we need a new boiler but the old pipework is behind a built in kitchen and its going to be a nightmare to change. Thanks in advance.
Scott El Paraiso hi yes it will go directly on. They are discontinued now though but I know plumb center still have some. Regards Dave
Thanks Dave (and your chicken). F9 error fixed after watching this. Ready for the weekend.
Great video Dave it worked a treat many thanks
Any advice on the f22 fault
Job done. Good luck
Hi my gloworm 30sx displays f9 after 4efforts to start , is the whirring noise at the start the fan or pump starting ?
Witty Woo the first thing that comes on is the pump. If it’s making a loud noise it possibly needs replacing!
G20 Gas Services thanks for replying !! wasnt sure , its making its normal start up noise sounding pretty normal but just not firing , i noticed the pressure on the display is reading 1.3 but doesnt move when the pump starts ???
Witty Woo ok have you tried all the things I’ve said in the video? If so then maybe just a new pressure sensor!
Hi Dave don't suppose you know why from F9 mine then goes to flashing between 02 to 03 what does that mean ?
Sheila Reynolds not sure! Have you pressed the reset button and tried topping up the pressure?
@@g20gasservices yes did all that but thought I would ask anyway .thank you though
Thanks for posting, a great help....
Thanks for this!
spot on this vid helped me out big time , big thanks Dave
Great video, thanks. My boiler is only making 2 noises when the reset button is pressed and no pump trying to start up. Does this sound like the pump?
Yes unfortunately it does 🙁
G20 Gas Services thanks for the quick reply. I searched for the new pump price and it looks to be around £180 for the part. Just need to get a quote for fitting it.
You saved my Christmas Day, thank you so much x
Racheal Miles glad I saved Xmas. Have a great one x
Hi Dave
Good video
I've an ultra com 30sxi and keep getting the f9
I've replaced the sensor.
Thanks
Hi is it definitely an Ultracom sxi and not just an sxi? Ive looked up the code for the Ultracom sxi and it says it doesn't use F9!! Dave
Thank you - Problem fixed. :0)
Any ideas? Thanks!
Hi Trev it will be the pressure sensor that needs replacing! They get blocked up but as they’re only about £30 it’s not worth cleaning it. Dave
On the older glowworms f9 can be caused by the overheat stat . If when resetting a presure is shown check the hi limit stat
phplumbing53 yes on the older cxi boilers F9 is a generic code so it will throw it up if the pcb doesn’t know what the fault is. F5 is the overheat stat. Dave
Thank you Thank you Thank you
Top work dave
