  • Hey woodworkers! Choosing the right 1/8" spiral router bit can be a confusing task, especially with all the options out there. Upcut? Downcut? Two flutes or three? Fear not! This video dives into the world of these tiny workhorses, helping you understand what each type excels at.
    Upcut vs Downcut:
Upcut: These bits spin their chips upwards, pulling them out of the cut. Great for general routing, especially in thick materials where chip clearance is crucial. Think dados, grooves, and hogging out waste.
Downcut: These bits push chips downwards, keeping them below the workpiece. Ideal for preventing tear-out on veneered materials or plywood edges. Downcuts also leave a cleaner top surface, perfect for finishing cuts.
    Number of Flutes:
Two flutes: Common for general purpose work, offering a smooth cut and good chip clearance.
Three flutes: Provide a smoother finish with less vibration, ideal for intricate cuts or delicate materials.
Four and more flutes: Excellent for high-speed routing and demanding applications, delivering an incredibly smooth finish but requiring more power from your router.
    Compression:
Compression bits feature a unique angled cutting edge that compresses the wood fibers as it cuts. This creates an incredibly clean and chip-free finish, ideal for melamine, plywood, and other materials prone to tear-out.
Remember: There's no "one-size-fits-all" approach. The best bit for your project depends on the material, application, and desired finish.
    In this video, we'll:
    * Put these bits to the test in various materials and applications.
    * Show you the pros and cons of each type.
    * Help you choose the right 1/8" spiral router bit for your next project.
