Trapping - The Next Level - The Management Advantage #32

- Trapping, along with most wildlife management activities, is often hindered by mother nature. The best trapping locations are often located in areas that are less than ideal for digging and setting traps. This week we show you how to combat these issues.
Trappers in the south are faced with hard packed road systems that run through pine plantations. These areas make it hard to get trap anchors in the ground. A way to work around this issue is to create a flat set anchored with a drag. We use Robert Waddell's homemade drag that is attached via a long chain that allows the trapper to anchor to nearby brush. The other end of the set is placed near a "prominent feature". In this case, Casey used a log on the side of the road. Located at the end of the log is a shallow hole to bury the trap in. As the coyote walks the road, he will see the log, smell the lure, and come to mark it as his own. A dirt hole set with a regular anchor would be useless in this location, but a drag attached to a flat set allows us to set a trap in an area frequented by coyotes.
Another common scenario faced by trappers is blending the trap back in after setting it. Peat moss is a great tool to use in blending traps. Peat moss used alone tends to be fluffy or spongy. This can prevent trapping success, but by combining it with soil that has already been collected you are able to maximize your ability to hide your set.
We'd like to thank all of our viewers for an outstanding response to our first 8 months of online wildlife management videos. We will continue to bring you time sensitive management videos to help you become a better land manager, but we're going to take it to the next level with better production, longer content, and more information. To allow us to do so, we will be bringing you new videos every other week, but we will still help you Gain The Advantage Through Proper Management. - Спорт
Thank you Brett. We want to educate people who are looking to learn about how to make their properties better.
Excellent! Y'all are giving people information about trapping in the Southeast that it took me years to learn the hard way.
The best is getting better. Thanks for doing what you do. I swear I learn something every episode.
you guys make shows better than most on tv i love your channel and your are the reason im getting into trappin this year and i want to thank you for all the work you do
+Dillon Cuthbert Alpha predators are fewer because they pose a threat to people, so coyote populations become excessive. They then continually encroach upon farms, threatening livestock, pets and small children.
Additionally, pelts (hides) can be sold.
I've had to thin out our local predator population years ago because they posed a danger to our calves and small children.
The further out you live, the more hand in hand with nature you exist. People that live in a city will never understand because they will never see bear, mountain lion or wolf tracks in their back yard where their children play.
You guys put together an Incredible Program- Way better now than you even were on cable. Its a shame they don't show more about the Truths of trapping on television. Keep it up- K-Walz
The informative content of these episodes, mixed with the quality production level, is what sets these guys far beyond anyone else on the web. Hell, even television. I learn more about modern trapping in ten minutes of what watching than I do from weeks of trial and error on the trapline. Keep up the outstanding knowledge your putting out gentlemen.
Beau,
Oklahoma

Great trapping info and excellent videos!
This channel is awesome. Learned a lot about predator control and trapping. Caught my first Coyote last night using techniques I learned from you.
john latta Great to hear John! Good luck the rest of the season on the trapline and keep checking back for more trapping videos.
I really like your videos. They remind me a bit of "Heartland Bowhunter" in the way you show how much preparation goes into a hunt/trapline run and not focused on multiple kills and whatnot. Please keep up the good work!
Your guys videos are awesome
Tyler Seprodi Thank you!
lol ... You guys are marketing gurus @ the very least! Great show!
Love the episodes guys. Yall and GrowingDeer.TV are my favorite. Keep up the good work!
Interesting and informative way. Thanks for the story! Me as a professional wildlife manager, very interesting this survey! I will be glad to new video!
Good idea mixing peat moss with the sandy loam soil. I use peat moss but haven't thought of mixing the two. Good idea here in TN with our muddy conditions.
great video quality ..nice sets ..great job

Alberta canada
That's what we like to hear Mike!
I am getting the Nikon 7100 for my birthday! Going to make some great hunting videos with those! If I hunted privite land I would do videos on duck hunting management also, but I hunt public land.
These videos are great i love them you guys need a show on tv...i have ordered some of the traps on amazon this groundhog tearing up my yard better look out...
the guy at 1:35 is a hero! one day i want to be just like him! SUCH BRAVERY!
lol i thought same thing
Than for your vids I'm a new trapper..I found ur bids very useful ty again
Excellent video!
For raccoons, beavers, weasels, marten, lynx we use connibears typically. For coyotes, fox and wolves we use power snares. Power snares are for on land setting on trails and they work very, very well!
this is the first year im trapping coyotes andyour videos help me a lot
Thanks for the help
Caught 21 coyotes on my 80 acre property with standard dirt hole sets. Unfortunately I did educate a few, gonna try these flat and triangle sets to test my luck!
Nice work!
you guys are doing a great job showing the work that goes into trapping! Can you put together a video that shows what to do once a trapper catches a coyote, bobcat, coon etc.? Meaning the steps taken for skinning and fleshing these animals to properly handle the fur? I think many people would benefit from watching someone as experienced as your team, learning the do's and don'ts of this process. thanks for your consideration.
Thanks for the kind words!
awsome vids,keep em coming.
Love your guys his videos keep making them
Great vids, very full of good to know info, thx boys!!!
this is awsome nice catch
Someone suggested mb550's for Alabama yotes. What y'all think?
he prolly had it muted haha, but im an avid watcher. kinda sad its every 2 weeks but kinda happy
Thanks Jaylon!
Good video. Thanks. Seems like a lot of work for one coyote.
Depends on the location. In IL, most places should have good soil for anchors. The drag system is best suited for hardpan where driving an anchor isn't feasible.
Thanks Beau!
It's a great way to save money and present a more natural set. Let us know if you try it and how it works.
i really enjoyed ,,thanks
Man I love these videos keep posting them there awesome
In my humble opinion they don't get any better than Minnesota Brand traps, 550's are the perfect size to handle coyotes and you can go to mntrapline, tim and nancy caven own it and have incredible customer service, good luck.
Great video
Thank you!
NICE VIDEO.CHUCK IS COOL.
Guys, just wanted to let you know that the videos y'all are putting out are the best I've seen on the web. While watching each video, it immediately becomes clear that an incredible amount of thought went in to each segment and scene. Glad I found the channel.
What camera do you shoot with? I'm also curious about the editing software you use as well. Do you make the music inside your videos or do you purchase each song, if so from what source? I'm asking because I would like to add music to my videos but without crippling my monetization ability.
Thank you Zach. We are filming predominantly with a Canon t3i and editing on Final Cut.
ManagementAdvantage The t3i is a great camera. We have the t1i but it limits at 720. Thanks for the insight and keep up the good work.
ManagementAdvantage the rebel t3i? i had no ideas the rebels could film
Excellent videos guys. Both quality and content are awesome. Id love to have you guys come tape an episode on trapping wolves on my northern ontario trapline.
Thank you Jerry! Trapping is a very important part of land management.
Great BlueWing. SLR's are tough for filming waterfowl hunting. They have a very fine focus that is tough on flying waterfowl.
Thanks steward!
Do you have to boil those aluminum screen pan covers before setting ?
Great video this will be second year trapping and my boys and me really enjoy it. good tips on the peet moss, thats what I used last year to cover the traps. what should I look for when setting traps for yotes. thanks for any help.
Have you guys ever tried a straw set? I live in northern MN and the majority of my season is frozen dirt. Makes for a long season ponding frozen ground.
you guys do a great job...wish our state was open to Yotes year around...do you catch many none target animals when you trapped the 10 days...
Great show, glad I found this on youtube, finally created an account to ask questions. Do people only use this drag in the south? I live in IL, is an anchor a better choice?
Where can I get an auger bit for the dirt whole sets. The big box hardware stores do not have any. Thanks. Love the videos.
Curious if you use any urine post sets when you are targeting coyotes? With all the 'coons, 'possums and skunks around, I would rather not have to deal with catching them.
Love that song it reminds of me !
When you mix that Pete Moss with sand is it still freeze proof
Nice vid cheers
+Beyond The Wire Productions Thanks!
+ManagementAdvantage what do y'all do with a coyote after you've cleared property
You should do more trapping videos they are very helpful
We will be doing some summer coyote trapping here in the coming weeks in the south. So we'll have a new trapping video or two along with it.
If I dry the sand and mix with peet would this work well for winter? I live in central SD. Or could a guy mix wax with the sand and use that under the trap itself and around. Thanks for the video's sure enjoy watching
I notice a slight odor on a new screen roll. Is there a process you suggest to get rid of that factory smell? thanks
i have watched all your trapping videos and i think there the best anywhere.i have been trying to catch coyotes for a year and have not been able to connect.help would be appriecated
Thank ya!
Congratulations! Glad to help!
Wax paper is pretty effective too!
Hey just wondered when you were going to post more trapping videos.
narration only comes out left side
The comments bellow my post came from a bunch of babies but this video is pretty good I'm a trapper and I definatly picked up a few tricks
What camera do u use to film? Please let me know i am searching for one for my duck hunting videos.
Thanks for watching Jmoua!
are hey better than connibears ?and could they be used under water?
it's not fair ,it is painful , i'm a hunter but i can imagine the pain that you give .shut it down
I was wondering do you night latch your traps casey ??
love these trapping videos ! how do you guys put it together like u do ? camera you're using?
Thanks! Have you checked out our other trapping videos?
Awesome
I am having trouble with coyotes in my area of Nebraska. My problem is my traps constantly freeze, thaw, and repeat. Any tips I could use. The farmers want them gone cause they are getting into the calving pens and goat pens.
matthew benson Watch this trapping video. We went through the same conditions last winter. Predator Trapping - Colder Weather - The Management Advantage #49
Is that a duke #3 they use?
Are you guys going to make more trapping videos?
your trapping videos are great! what are the gloves you use?
Will that peat moss help with Alabama red clay? We had a month of no rain and I was catching every day and now it hasn't quit raining the past two weeks and the clay either runs off the traps or packs em so tight they won't fire. It's frustrating cause the fawns should be dropping here in the next month or so and I still have coyote running everywhere
padriac mccoy Yes it will. That's where we've used it the most!
See up in Canada we use something called a "Power Snare" that's how we can get 100+ coyotes in a few weeks. Why set 100 dirt holes and get 10 coyotes in a couple weeks when you could catch 10 coyotes with 6 power snares in half the time?
Y'all should make some snaring videos and videos with trail cam footage of critters working sets to help us understand what animals do. Just saying..
Where you get your traps? I live in Alabama and have coyotes like crazy on my land. I got to do something.
