Hi Erica, I just wanted to thank you for your amazing content. Though I don't know you and I'm based in the UK, I'll say this now. I'm a woodworker but also a classically trained musician and composer, no stranger to 2 stroke stihl equipment, these days using stihl cordless, but that's just for comfort, yep, I miss a 2 stroke engine running, but not right near my ear at head height lol. Every time I watch one of your videos I feel like I'm sitting in a classroom learning something I want to learn. I definitely need to get a quality pressure/vacuum tester before I start working on some older saws I've acquired. Thanks again for another informative video. Have a very blessed holiday season.
Good morning! I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas! Here is a story for you about a 1980’s Stihl 024 chainsaw was tossed into the trash bin! I am in a mission to find out why, and what will it take it get it back up running and cutting again! Come with me! Tell me, have you ever found a chainsaw at the dump or the scrap yard? Please, like and subscribe! Have a great day!
I came for the chainsaws and stayed for the pronunciation of the word “out”. Love it. This lady is amazing at this. Love the expertise, the clear video shots, her patience explaining everything in detail, the meticulous testing, her sense of humor and last but not least the clean table. My new favorite small engine repair channel. Sorry Donboy73.
I wish I had a friend who found saws like that for me!! I repaired a Husqvarna 262xp for someone recently that only needed a few tweaks. Fuel line, one AV mount, sharpening, a good cleaning and a spark plug. They had given up on it but when I brought it back you could see the excitement in their eyes when they made the first cut. I gave them a few pointers (which I learned from you) about simple maintenance, types of gas and winter settings and storage. Thanks for all the help, I watch your videos every time you post.
I cannot even believe someone threw that machine away! What we they thinking?! Love the videos. I knew nothing about chainsaws. I was scared on two cycle engines. After watching all of your video no I’m not scared anymore. I tore an old saw apart and I’m fixing it. I also now own two Stihl chainsaws! Thanks Ericka!
I wanted to say thank you for doing these videos!! You inspired me to completely go thru my old MS170. 15 year old saw.,It had been sitting for over 6 years. Complete cleaning, new fuel line, filter, plug, air filter and chain. Runs as good as new!
Love the old Stihls. Amazing what they can do. Thanks for these! I found a dealer out in the Midwest that would sell me a pressure-vac kit, so now I can play along at home.
I really appreciate your channel and the effort put into restoring discarded and abused saws. People just dont realize how long a good saw or piece of equipment will give great service when maintained. Whether its a saw, tractor, vehicle, etc, its important to pay attention to how it handles, feels and sounds and fix it right away to avoid expensive repairs.
Man I love this channel. Erica is awesome at what she does. As another person that loves chainsaws as much as she does, it does my heart good to see someone fixing a quality saw instead of them being thrown away. The majority of Stihl chainsaws made today are crap compared to these saws from yesteryear.
Those came out in the early '80s. For their size they were great! 1 of the problems was the air filter, way too small. Next were the fuel lines, vacuum line & intake boot. Next model was the 24S, forerunner of the 026.
Hi Erica, great job. Maybe I add some comments. As far as I know the "wood boss" came only in 1986. There are date marks on the saw btw. About the muffler part in 53:10: As far as l know back in the days they had different mufflers in the US and Europe. In 53:10 you show the European/ German version. I have this muffler on my 024 super. Btw same applies to the 038. Maybe 2 things I'd still do: 1. Bend the handle back into position. Otherwise it can cause trouble for some rubber parts as you said in the long run. 2. Put the stihl tag back correctly. This offends the eye 😂😂 Best wishes from Germany and have a good start in 2025
@@marriedwithsmallengines After writing my comment something popped up in my mind. The wood boss came in 1986. However it has a Tillotson carburetor. Only the very early 024s had a Tillotson carburetor. They switched it to walbro. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the top cover or the tag isn't the original one.
Great job Erica. Another one back to life. I wish we had dumpsters in the UK, I would be out looking for a saw to resurrect! Hope you had a good Christmas, Lynton
Hi Erica, you have a very informative and cozy channel! I like your saw shop and repairing videos, i learned many things from channels like yours! Have a Happy new year 🎉
Another great video Erica. Old saws are really fascinating. I particularly liked the intro with the deer and the snow. We don't get much snow in London anymore so it was greatto see some.
The Stihl logo was put on upside down so you could read it properly when looking at it from the top down. IMO! What a AWESOME Dumpster find! The 024 runs like brand new! Nice job Erica! The two kitty's are going to love their new heated beds too!
Hello This Red Gas is too old, and the Oil separated from the Gas.When you run a Chainsaw with this Gas, you only have a few Minutes Fun. No problems with the Alkylad Fuel like Motomix ore so. Just a smitch lighter with less Power, so you dont need one in comparison to the MS261. Thanks for another nice Video.
Great rebuild Erica, sad for the owner who threw it away, a little more effort, and it would have been sorted, but lucky for you. Happy New Year from Christchurch New Zealand.
You are truly an amazing mechanic and like Ron you help me to try and slow down and be more observant in all things I do. This is not a race. I used to hear that a lot as a child.
Right-on. Everyone races through everything now. I like the saying: Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast." People who race through things usually make mistakes. Then they have to back-track. In the end, they taking longer to accomplish the job and make it more costly.
The “Mystery Black Box” is an after-market generic chain saw case. A very nice one I might add. It has room for not only a saw, but chaps, gloves, tools, a spare chain, a quart of bar oil, etc, etc. I keep a Stihl MS250 in mine. If I’m not mistaken, I purchased said case from Northern Tool & Equipment here in Tennessee. 👈👍 🎄🎄🌟🎄🎄🇺🇸 PS: Erica… Keep up the excellent content!!!👍🇨🇦
My Stihl 024 AV WB was made in Virginia Beach, USA, it also has a Red lever and was run over and broken when I got it. I replaced the crushed flywheel side Crankshaft housing half (along with carb rebuild, new seals, hoses, etc) and got that old girl running again .It does have an 026 Air Filter and cover on it though, which it came with, and someday needs to be corrected. She still has almost 150 lbs of compression, and would still cut if needed 🙂
white on rubber parts is usually wax in the rubber formulation. It prevents oxidation of the rubber. Wax slowly leaches out and turns brownish with time on surface of part.
On my 024 I got the dealer to change the oil pump, the factory pump just spilled bar oil everywhere. After that it was just the nicest saw, always started no problem.
Erica, I bought my Stihl 028AV Super in 1989 brand new from a dealer in Victoria, Australia and it has front chain adjustment. I still use it from time to time. Love your content. Happy New Year.
Great video! Usually, red lever saws are early production. Sometimes they run a little better because emissions standards weren’t as strict as later production. Some early 024’s had a single bar stud/nut . Recoil badge is a bit of a head scratcher. Quality control in German production was pretty good as a rule.
My neighbor threw out a MAC 3818 with its case. It still had a service tag on it. It looked like it was rarely used. The shop probably told him it was obsolete and parts not available so he threw it out.
I remember the homelite chainsaws use to come in a black case but haven’t seen one in a while good morning and love watching the channel that is my guess on the case😊
I have 2 024s, West Germany and Germany. The early one has an HS242 attachment, also a single piston ring, black stop switch and a broken starter pawl that doesn't match the later one. Both have that voodoo magic tank vent
I have an 026AV and bought a couple of spare starter pawls. You're right: although the part number is correct they look different, and don't fit. I had to spend about an hour with a Dremel tool and a small file to make a new pawl match the old one.
My guess is that it is from the early 1990’s based on the red lever and the bird cage in the muffler with 1 exit hole in the front cover. The latter being for greater reduction of emissions as time goes on. I know of an 024 purchased new in 1988 that has the black lever and a cage less muffler with a series of exit holes in the front cover. I could be wrong but I have seen both. There does seem to be many variations of this model out there. Wow, how simple things can cause havoc. I wonder if there are hair line cracks in the fuel line that can only be seen if you bend it? Great job!👍🎄🎉
Awesome video Erica, i loved it! I can’t believe someone would toss that saw, go figure. I might be wrong, but it looked like someone might have done some port work. That is one sweet running 024. Hope you all have a great New Year!
Great job on the saw!! It would have been a shame for that saw to go to the dump! The kitty is loving the warm bed! Thanks and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
I like those older saws! I'm currently rebuilding a 026, new cylinder and piston. It had scored a piston and cylinder. Oddly this only has 1 fuel adjustment on the carburetor. So I will need to be sure that it's not neaning out, possibly the original failure cause. You did a great job on that one!
I run a Stihl 08S - pre chain-brake. The 'Made In West Germany' text isn't a badge, it's actually cast into the pullstart cover. I'll send you some pics when I next drag it out. x Merry Xmas from West Wales, UK
@@naznomad635 i have stihl 08s too…. Been gifted…. Same body as my stihl disc cutter….!!! Take chain cover off date should be cast inside….mine is 1977!!!… runs/cuts lovely now!🍺🍺💪👍👍👍
What’s that buzzing sound? Is that a hornet with a new year message…… my turn soon ….. another excellent video Erica, happy new year to you and your team.
That’s a cracking wee saw, runs like a top. Very surprised by the compression, I’d have thought 180psi would have more likely. Great video again. Wish I could find saws in skips, the ones I see on FB marketplace are demanding top money. Even the none runners !
That's a awesome saw nice... The cats....LOL I have 3 cats, never a dull moment with cats, their personalities are sooooo different. yep I like the card board mom...LOL
For your 024 AV Super rebuild you should put a 026 top end and piston in it. You have to cut a cooling fin on the motor, but it works great and that gives a few more CCs and more power. The 024 AV Super and 026 share the same stroke length. That’s what I did and it works great! The 024AV top ends will not fit the 024 AV Super.
That 024 is a Tiger! It’s amazing that the last mechanic missed that bad fuel line. It pays to be meticulous and not haphazard. His loss is your gain! Lily is adorable. It seems like she understood the purpose of the heated cat bed right away. Tony may still prefer his box and towels though. Cats have opinions of their own. Perhaps you can sprinkle some catnip in Tony’s bed. That may draw him to it. Don’t work your entire vacation away. You and Tyler deserve the break. Happy New Year to you and your family!
Thanks for that fantastic video. I love vintage professionell Stihl saws. And cats. I wish you and your relatives and cats a good 2025. Love from Germany, Alex.
Hey, How are you doing today? I am doing pretty good myself. The one cat looked very happy with his new cat bed. I just wanted to let you know that I was made in the 80's as well. I like all of the hard work that Tyler is doing to improve your studio area, I hope that you take care until next time and Happy Holidays!
Based on the evidence you presented , it seems that saw was crunched which bent the handle and probably broke the starter cover. The badge was probably bent removing it and placed upside down on the new one. Date of manufacture was before the Berlin wall fell, hence "West" Germany. The older style caps support this. Stihl used a letter system to date their parts starting in the 80s, i believe and still do.1985 would have been a K inside a circle. They used 20 of the 26 letters, so in 2000 they started over with A. Im not sure which ones they didn't use. The older saws used the narrower straight fuel line and tne Tillotson carbs. The pre EPA saws had more open mufflers which many had red levers and were snappier. They had tight squish bands you may want to see if this one still has a base gasket. That is one sweet little saw.
Using the tool with the spark plug end put it over the clip for the sprocket to keep it from flying away and pull it towards you. I seen that on another channel
44:54 Mold release to aid extraction from the injection molds. Causes no issue with the fuel, or carburetor so it is not removed in a cost/labor/process optimization. To those claiming it is a talc sprinkled on after you have to explain why it is present throughout the duration of the interior...
Thank you for posting this excellent video. I enjoyed watching it. I want to thank Ron for sending you the heated kitty beds. I think they are really great for your kitties and will keep them warm and snuggly through the coldest weather. That is such a good idea! The upside down badge might have been put there that way by the former owner of the saw. I don't know why someone would do that, I just think there are people who might try doing that -- perhaps to get conversation started or as a joke or as a statement of some sort. About the carburetor. Do you have an ultrasonic cleaner that you can use for giving it a cleaning? I don't know if that will make a difference for you. I know an ultrasonic cleaning is also a lot of extra work because you have to disassemble and reassemble the carburetor. And I must qualify my suggestions by saying i have no experience in chainsaw or small engine repair. Still, maybe an ultrasonic cleaning can help in some cases....
Thank you for info about the powder... And that fuel line is very short, when you flip the saw on it's side with less than half the tank it's gonna shut down...
Even when the shop is closed for a holiday
Erica can be found working and whispering away
She listens intently as she inspects and does each test
To what each saw tells her about why they are a work bench guest
Abandoned, discarded, neglected and often tossed aside
After performing their job for years with dignity and pride
She finds the problems and with parts used and new
The saws come back from near death with vigour anew
To perform the task of chipping pieces of wood away
To create logs, blocks and wood chips at the end of the day
Waiting patiently for the next video she chooses to upload
As she transverses the winter season amid the snow and cold
I really appreciate your poetic take on the shop! 😄

Thank you!
Awesome video Erica, i loved it! I can’t believe someone would toss that saw, go figure. I might be wrong, but it looked like someone might have done some port work. That is one sweet running 024. Hope you all have a great New Year!
Merry Christmas to you, what a nice gift for the kitties! Awesome save, for little cost, on a nice saw!
Great job on the saw!! It would have been a shame for that saw to go to the dump! The kitty is loving the warm bed! Thanks and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you very much!
Hi Erica, nice saw and not to expensive to repair.love the new background
Thank you!
@@marriedwithsmallengines your so welcome
All pro shake down and repair as usual 👍
Thank you!
Its a nice happy 40 years old saw! The Muffler cover you find, i think its an european cover from 024/026!
Whish you all a good new year!
Thank you!
That seems like very high compression for an old saw...
The cat seem to be loving its heated beds.
loved this Erica nothing better than bringing an old saw back from the dead 🙂🙂🙂
Hi Erica 👋 seeing the 🦌 was wonderful. So beautiful
So many deer in the back yard!
That was a great video!🥳 and so nice of Ron to send the heated cat beds!
the end of that old fuel line looked cracked . awesome video!
Great find and work returning it to the living!
I run a Stihl 08S - pre chain-brake. The 'Made In West Germany' text isn't a badge, it's actually cast into the pullstart cover.
I'll send you some pics when I next drag it out. x
Merry Xmas from West Wales, UK
Does Yours Have the Log Logo on the Recoil Like Mine
@@naznomad635 i have stihl 08s too…. Been gifted…. Same body as my stihl disc cutter….!!! Take chain cover off date should be cast inside….mine is 1977!!!… runs/cuts lovely now!🍺🍺💪👍👍👍
That saw ran great, it's amazing what people toss In the garbage. And those heated kitty beds look pretty comfortable 😊.
What’s that buzzing sound? Is that a hornet with a new year message…… my turn soon ….. another excellent video Erica, happy new year to you and your team.
Excellent job! Thanks!!!!!
That’s a cracking wee saw, runs like a top. Very surprised by the compression, I’d have thought 180psi would have more likely. Great video again. Wish I could find saws in skips, the ones I see on FB marketplace are demanding top money. Even the none runners !
Good morning! I hope you all have a fabulous Christmas and new year, thank you for all the great video`s Erica and tyler... kev cornwall uk
Well done. This reinforced my idea that if I ever go on UA-cam, I'll get a cat. You can never have too many cat videos. 🤔
That's a awesome saw nice... The cats....LOL I have 3 cats, never a dull moment with cats, their personalities are sooooo different. yep I like the card board mom...LOL
The shop wouldn’t be the same without the cats 😊
Another Vintage German STIHL Saw Saved From The Scrap Heap Too Be Used and Loved Again 😇😊❤️
Lovely little chainsaw these are ❤
Yes they are!
That is an interesting idea.
Hi thank you for sharing this video happy New Year to you & your family
Regards
Steve UK London
That 024 is a Tiger! It’s amazing that the last mechanic missed that bad fuel line. It pays to be meticulous and not haphazard. His loss is your gain!
Lily is adorable. It seems like she understood the purpose of the heated cat bed right away. Tony may still prefer his box and towels though. Cats have opinions of their own. Perhaps you can sprinkle some catnip in Tony’s bed. That may draw him to it.
Don’t work your entire vacation away. You and Tyler deserve the break. Happy New Year to you and your family!
Thank you Ron! (The best and most generous Vet in all of Wisconsin!)
Ron, thank you for providing the beds for the kitties. That was really great to do!!! And I agree with you about Erica and Tyler taking a break.
PS: I can't wait to see you tango with that two man Hornet!
Good on ya Ron. 👍🐈
Thanks for that fantastic video. I love vintage professionell Stihl saws. And cats. I wish you and your relatives and cats a good 2025. Love from Germany, Alex.
Hey,
How are you doing today? I am doing pretty good myself.
The one cat looked very happy with his new cat bed.
I just wanted to let you know that I was made in the 80's as well.
I like all of the hard work that Tyler is doing to improve your studio area,
I hope that you take care until next time and Happy Holidays!
Thank you for all of this information!!
Appreciate your videos which show how the process makes for a more thorough repair and something is learned in each one.
Great work thank you
Using the tool with the spark plug end put it over the clip for the sprocket to keep it from flying away and pull it towards you.
Homelite’s Came in Those Cases Along With Craftsman Saws Erica Was That Red Farm Diesel In The Saws Fueltank
Mystery saw. Homelite? The clutch washer is usually found on professional grade saws.
Upside down badge is indicative of an Australian model . 🤓
Craftsman saw came in the black case
I have a 08S with an upside down Stihl badge. I've always wondered why.
Cat sticks nose out the door says, AW HELL NO!! 🤣👍🍻
Thank you for another great comment, Robert! I’m pretty sure I see you in the comment section after every single video. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for info about the powder... And that fuel line is very short, when you flip the saw on it's side with less than half the tank it's gonna shut down...
Nice job Erica
Thank you!
Great video
I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot 👍🇦🇺
241's were little hot rods! 🔥
I am very fortunate to still have one. I have no idea why Stihl stopped making them.
