@Mustie! I know all about these, I service them in my area (southern Illinois) Very dependable pellet stoves. I own a furnace model in my basement that's tied to my central heat ducts. I installed one of these in a ladies fireplace about 6-7 yrs ago. The door HAS to be shut AND sealed to see a vacuum inside the burn area. The 'computer' has to see the vacuum or the igniter will not try to start the pellets burning, and the auger will not run to push pellets into the 'burn box'. (safety thing) They can be manually ignited with a jellied alcohol solution. Also, you need a plate covering the hole on the front of the burn pot so the inlet air draws up through the burning pellets is a must. Cut a metal plate and install it and it will work correctly, right now it's not burning right. Of course, by the time I've watched this, you already now all this LOL Yea, your guess on that being a 'cage' that goes in the fireplace first, then the rest slides into it (for servicing access) Did you get the 'diverter' plate on the right side with the stove? It needs to be there. Also, make sure the 'air holes' are open in the bottom of the burn pot, they like to 'clinker' off, I couldn't tell if you have them good and clean so enough air can get to the burning pellets so it burns efficiently. Not telling you what to do, just giving you some pointers about the Harmon stoves.
At the start I wondered if there was a missing basket for the combustion area. On mine there is a cast iron basket you remove each day for cleaning. The ash in that forms a solid lump that you have to break up to vacuum out.
He had a cover kind of thing on the top of the burn pot that he removed when cleaning the pot out. I don't know if he put it back on? Is that what you are talking about with the air to be drawn and burn more efficiently?
@@d.l.horton2093 No, where he removed the long and short thumbscrew on the front 'angled' area of the burn pot there's an access hole to change out the igniter on models that have them (this one doesn't appear to) If that is open it doesn't allow the air being drawn in to be forced up through the air holes in the bottom of the inside of the burn pot through the pellets for combustion air. After looking when the pellets were burning, it appeared he did put the plate on, but hard to tell real well in the video. The flame seemed to me to be burning too high and orange, it will generally have more of a blue color to it when having 'complete' combustion. These Harman pellet stoves work REAL efficiently when working right. I wouldn't give mine up for any other brand. Hope that helps.
He also might want to make sure there is enough ventilation (air gates) to provide combustion air in the room where this stove is going to be installed

Mustie: Mechanical master and repairman extraordinaire. Also Mustie: Installs handle on the door with it closed, forcing him to turn the set screw 1/8 turn at a time and unable to see the screw he's putting the allen wrench into. :-) Loved the video.
I have a Lopi pellet stove insert that has been working great for 35+ years I am 70 year young widow and I clean the stove out myself the guy who checks the motors etc for me says still looks like brand new He has replaced door gasket once love my pellet stove love your videos tells me they are all about the same take care they all last just about forever lol

One way to protect glass from overspray,is to apply some petroleum jelly to the surface,then just wipe it off ,with the excess paint.Saves a lot of scraping! I will watch you do practically any sort of task involving those aspects. I'd go satin finish all the way. The gloss may craze with a lot of heat cycles. But, maybe that would be appealing
As I watch you work on your pellet stove, I sit here warming and watching my 1995 Quadrafire do it's job. Many tons have gone through this unit and it works great.

watching Mustie hear from New England I rebuilt (Circuit board, ignitor, and disassembly for a deep clean) my Harman stove last year. I was all in for around $350. It was so much cheaper than replacing it and hiring a stove company to fix it. Make sure you get an igniter that is an exact replacement from the stove store and made by Harman. The Amazon ones are garbage and will not last. I think that’s why my circuit board actually went up: because I used an aftermarket igniter.
You sure hit the nail on the head about appliances, we've had our fridge for over 30 years and our microwave for 35 it still works but not very good finally got a new one. Keep up the great work

the stove examination and clean was really cool but I have to say your stash is full of wonders and treasures I would enjoy a complete tour search. I too have a hard time letting all that interesting and beautiful stuff go even if I never use any of it it is cool in and of itself.

I was watching a video the other day where a guy was trying to remove some exhaust manifold nuts and bolts that were really rusted. He did an experiment using heat, penetrating oil (I believe he was using Kroil), and a combination of the two. The combination was far and away the most successful method... none of the fasteners that he used both heat and penetrant on broke, and he removed the broken studs/bolts using the same method. I know that a lot of watchers already know this, but I'm an old dog who has been there and done that and I didn't know just how much better using both heat and a good penetrating oil worked!
You reminded me of the time when my dad decided to give the coke boiler a thorough clean. It was a great boiler when it was serviced properly but it was a complete swine to clean and if it wasn't done then it would start to act up. One time, he decided that the vacuum cleaner was the way to go. Just one hot cinder was enough, 3 ft flames came out of the vacuum cleaner exhaust until he managed to turn it off.
Well this is different! Well done my friend, once again you show that if you dont try you will never know. You are to be commended for the scope of your shopping bins!!!

Awesome Sunday afternoon episode of Mustie1 Darren restoring an about to be scrapped pellet burning wood fireplace is definitely my ideal of a perfect lazy couch potato day. Wife is off shopping, got a mug of coffee and some left over Danish Christmas cookies to munch on.
I love my 2011 Quadra Fire that I got for free from a friend who knew a guy that was getting rid of one. It hadn't been cleaned in years and tearing this one down brings back a lot of dirty memories. I got it during covid and had to drive to Delaware from NY to get the pipe from a guy on Facebook marketplace who had an unopened box for sale, there was nothing in any store by me. I didn't have to make it look pretty as I got it for my cold basement that was 45 degrees in the middle of the winter, now it's 70 and dry. My stove gets to around 450 in the pot and blows around 285 out of the vents. The only thing I have had to replace on the stove is the thermocouple, igniter, and the seal on the door. I hooked it up to a Nest thermostat with its own transformer and relay so i can control it remotely but my basement cools down so fast that the stove has a hard time cycling; it's old. It's a good thing these stoves were made to last. Awesome job. Love the lamp!!!

My neighbor still uses a Harmon continuous feed coal stove for his entire house for 25 years plus. I help him at times loading the hopper and taking out the ashes.

Close the hopper door to activate the vacuum switch. It should also be on stove temp, not room temp, as I see no external thermistor for this unit.

Harman, best pellet stove you can get! Simple design feed system still in use today. Missing knob is your room/stove temp settings.

Copper paste is the thing that is heat resistand and prevents bolts to lock on high temperature. Of cause there is a limit - but its pretty high.

Finally something to watch.
I was watching a video the other day where a guy was trying to remove some exhaust manifold nuts and bolts that were really rusted. He did an experiment using heat, penetrating oil (I believe he was using Kroil), and a combination of the two. The combination was far and away the most successful method... none of the fasteners that he used both heat and penetrant on broke, and he removed the broken studs/bolts using the same method. I know that a lot of watchers already know this, but I'm an old dog who has been there and done that and I didn't know just how much better using both heat and a good penetrating oil worked!
It's a pleasure and fun to watch this channel, absolutely no need a sophisticated video equipment.

You reminded me of the time when my dad decided to give the coke boiler a thorough clean. It was a great boiler when it was serviced properly but it was a complete swine to clean and if it wasn't done then it would start to act up. One time, he decided that the vacuum cleaner was the way to go. Just one hot cinder was enough, 3 ft flames came out of the vacuum cleaner exhaust until he managed to turn it off.
I used to have a pellet stove. When they are working right, they are great. Corn stoves are even better.
Can some pellet stoves handle corn?
@MostlyInteresting some can but not all. The nice thing about the corn stoves is corn can be found anywhere at cheap prices.

Awesome Sunday afternoon episode of Mustie1 Darren restoring an about to be scrapped pellet burning wood fireplace is definitely my ideal of a perfect lazy couch potato day.
Wife is off shopping, got a mug of coffee and some left over Danish Christmas cookies to munch on.
That was a very interesting video. I love this stove - I've never seen one of that type before.
I love my 2011 Quadra Fire that I got for free from a friend who knew a guy that was getting rid of one. It hadn't been cleaned in years and tearing this one down brings back a lot of dirty memories. I got it during covid and had to drive to Delaware from NY to get the pipe from a guy on Facebook marketplace who had an unopened box for sale, there was nothing in any store by me. I didn't have to make it look pretty as I got it for my cold basement that was 45 degrees in the middle of the winter, now it's 70 and dry. My stove gets to around 450 in the pot and blows around 285 out of the vents. The only thing I have had to replace on the stove is the thermocouple, igniter, and the seal on the door. I hooked it up to a Nest thermostat with its own transformer and relay so i can control it remotely but my basement cools down so fast that the stove has a hard time cycling; it's old. It's a good thing these stoves were made to last. Awesome job. Love the lamp!!!
lol!.. love the last shot!. Pretty cool one fixing up an old pellet stove. My daughter n son in law got one last year and been running that for supplemental heat. Cooks the house!
Surprisingly liquid Maalox antacid is a great high temp anti-seize. It has been my go to coating for exhaust manifold bolts for years.

That's some of the best glass spray out there. I can still remember the smell from my dad's old gmc van back in the day. There was always a can stuck somewhere that would occasionally emit a fresh poof over bumps. Ah, the good ol' days.
I always smear cheap cooking oil on the inside of a firebox that way when it heats up it turns a pretty black carbon
