When one of my Stihl brush cutters needed a new carb 10 years ago, I was put off by the fact that Stihl wanted $100 for a new one. So I looked on Amazon and bought some knockoffs. Five of them. For SIX DOLLARS apiece, less than the sales tax in my state on a Stihl carb, and a third the price of those rebuild kits that rarely work. The first one is still on the machine, which is in heavy use on a 20-acre property. That company either builds carbs for Stihl or should be. I haven’t always had that much luck with knockoffs, but that $6 carb was a home run.
Bought a new weedwhacker because the carb on my old one was shot. I hated it- the head spun the opposite direction of the old one I was used to and it was really irking me trying to trim with it. I haven't had much luck on those knockoff carbs either but for $12... why not? Old weedwhacker fired right up on the new carb and I'm still using it weekly 2 years later. Anybody want to buy a backward-spinning weedwhacker for cheap? Barely used!
I also have 1 on a Stihch whacker working 2 years later. But the 1 I bought for a Kawasaki whacker seems to have issues..but...it could be me, not sure.
I just replaced the carb on a Stihl 026 with a $20 one from Amazon and it runs great. The main problem with the old Stihl carb was it had no way to adjust the high speed jet. The new one does.
That's the reason I watch your videos Taryl, you catch all the hidden issues. Thanks for another great year of learning and entertainment, you guys are awesome. Happy New Year to you, Jr. Slippers, Ronnie, and the rest of the crew. See you Next year.
A reminder for people to take your time and ensure you assemble it correctly, take pictures in disassembly should one be unsure so that you can put back all the linkages correctly when reinstalling. Good video Taryl as always. Cheers.
Gasket against the block is on backwards or the carb for different application because the holes in the bleed hol3s ate oppisite and thats why it is surging
Great tutorial on how a second set of (pro) eyes can find the problems involving a carb replacement. It was choke part connected wrong (and auto throttle was on). Take photos with a cell phone of the before disassembly and then connect the new part on from those photos so you don't make the same error.
Thanks so much for the videos..They help me so much. Just saw this video and it's the same thing I am getting ready to do. Putting a new carbatrator on a Clarke 5000 generator. Looks almost the same as that Honda. Thank you love all the videos.
I had to block off the hole right above the right carb stud on a recent predator style replacement carb. It had a huge vacuum leak and surged bad so I had to put the gasket on backwards to block it off.
I'm betting that's what I've done with 2 identical engines and multiple carbs gaskets in those kits. One runs perfect. Same carb on both now. Of course one engine came without a carb. Gonna trace back my steps and compare carb set ups. Thanks so much and happy new year.
Hi Taryl...got a dumb question--I've got a very old Toro Single Stage Snowblower--manufactured in 2001. It came with the Plastic Briggs and Stratton carb. They were known for leaking and mine did too. I bought a metal bowl (Briggs/Walbro) and it ran ok for 3 years until it started leaking fuel our of the choke side (caused by a bad needle which I fixed, pressure tested and cleaned all jets). I figured I'd try the plastic carb again- cleaned all of its' jets, installed a new needle and it pressure tested good at 3-4 lbs. I reinstalled it and the Toro ran fine, however the next morning there was gas on the floor. The carb's bowl gasket was leaking. I took two gaskets and re-tightened the plastic bowl. No leaks but the carb started surging (it didn't with the single gasket). Would the extra bowl gasket be the cause of the surging? I ended up using a metal carb that I had re-built and it's working. Thanks for your great videos SIR!
Lots of people put 2 cycle oil in the gas tank to keep the gas from corroding or rusting the fuel system components. Any oil will work though without complication once you get it going again diluted with fresh gasoline. But it won't keep the gas from going bad. *( nether will STA-BIL, check out Taryl's episode where he tried it with 10 little engines mounted on a picnic table for a year) The main cause of that governor hunting is the fuel mixture orifices being so exact that they are too small to work effectively with anything but fresh gas with 10% or less EtOH (ethanol) going thru them. It's an emissions related issue. The richer the A/F ratio the higher the HC and CO emissions. Back in the day, small engines had "high speed" mixture screws to adjust, but the U.S. EPA has forced the small engine industry to make their carburetors non-adjustable. EtOH is less volatile and anything else but "fresh" gasoline going thru those A/F mixture orifices changes the ratio to a leaner condition than was engineered for the engine to run correctly. Some generators are extra lean to increase efficiency and they sometimes require a considerable period of time befor they are warm enough to run without the choke partially on. E.g. The Harbor Freight "Tailgator" sometimes requires attending the choke for 3 or 4 minutes befor it will run on it's own. The throttle opening and closing is called "governor hunting." When the governor opens the throttle, unlike car carburetors from the past, there is no squirt of fuel to fill the dropout of the suspended fuel caused by the sudden change in barometric pressure, (vacuum or manifold absolute pressure) difference so the torque sags. The torque sag lowers the erpm so the governor opens the throttle to compensate. That sudden opening of the throttle causes a further lean A/F condition which causes a bigger torque sag which causes the engine to further lose rpm, so the governor opens the throttle even further, which causes a further leaning and what you hear is the throttle opening and closing in an unsteady condition. Until the engine is HOT or if there is anything obstructing the fuel going thru the calibrated orifices in the carburetor, or dirt you will have to put the choke on partially to get it to run smoothly. Partial choke will immediately fix it, but changes in load on the engine will require changes to the choke position so it's not a very viable fix. The fix is dump out the fuel and put in fresh, or if there is debris in the tiny orifices, a fuel system conditioner may clean it out. Otherwise the carburetor must be cleaned to clear the blockages. I swear by Techron by Chevron as the fuel system conditioner and cleaner. I have used it for years with great success. It does not correct the gasoline, like the PRI-G product Taryl showed. Techron is only for cleaning the fuel system. BUT IT WORKS MARVELOUSLY. Some extra choking may be needed once you get the engine running, but as soon as the Techron gets into the carb it starts to clear the debris. I use about 10 X the mix the bottle calls for when I'm clearing a problem carburetor. In just a few minutes I can put the engine to work as it will clear the debris very quickly. As a last resort, you can drill out the passage to allow more fuel to pass thru the carburetor, but only about 1 or 2 thousandth's of an inch. If you have a full set of Number, Letter and Fraction drills, using a micrometer you can find the size the existing A/F orifice is and go from there. Thank you Taryl for showing us how much difference the old gas can make on fussy nowaday generator engines. I only wish you would have connected the choke linkage as soon as you saw it was not connected and then run the engine on partial choke to show the need for richer mixture. OK, FB. ben/ michigahn
Taryl, I have a generator that has had the same fuel for at least 3 years and It starts and runs fine? I think it's because I only use Ethanol-free fuel, I also run the carb dry when I do run it by shutting off the fuel supply. I am considering changing it out, maybe just use it in a 2015 vehicle I use as an everyday driver. Wadayouthink?
Same thing on a Honda powered tamper for a friend had all kinds of gaskets in the wrong places with the cheapo amazon carb and when I was done after a few minuets I put on the OK carb after cleaning and gave him back the cheapy one worked like new again.
I got one like that without the low idle feature sold with blocked carb bad gas in tank cleaned carb ran fine but noticed after being stored some oil on the ground and yeh leaking crank seal ad asume as is between engine and gen head so fb market place strikes again
Taryl thank you fixing this problem with this customers older power generator. You always diagnose the problem and show the customer the common mistakes they make in trying to do the repair themselves. You never put them down or say things during your repairs to offend their intelligence. Your demeanor during your videos show you do respect and truly want to help them to get their problem corrected. Tayrl I don't want to offend you, but I want to let you know your character looks have really changed lately your hair/wig has become very dry and lighter color than before ; it use to be black and smooth looking a much better look for you please go back to the dark hair or wig. Some good quality hair conditioner may help. THANKS.
I have ALWAYS had good fuel storage (with non-ethanol fuel, of course) by using Sta-Bil original. As soon as I get home with the filled cans, I put the prescribed amount into each can. If I haven't used that fuel in a year, I add the prescribed amount to that year-old fuel. Never have I had a problem. I do the same with fuel stored in my equipment as well.
They should put a warning label on those generators. 'Remove all fuel before prolonged storage.' Then put a big 'WARNING' explanation in the owner's manual how gasoline has a shelf life, and how old gasoline will not run the engine, and will eventually damage the carburetor if allowed to sit inside it for long periods of time. At least he didn't pull and pull the starting cord, like I did on my pressure washer, not realizing that I needed to put the switch on 'RUN' before it would start. I had to discover the hard way that no amount of pulling will start it with the ignition switched off!
You're right. Stabilizer's are meant to keep good fuel good, not to turn bad fuel good! Taryl said at the beginning of the video, that he always drains the tank and gives it back to the customer dry. So what does he do? He pisses in the tank with that stabilizer and gives it back to the customer!
Agreed. Did he replace the old fuel with new and then add the stabilizer? Wasn't clear to me. Once he diagnosed the old fuel was bad, I figured he got rid of it.
Tyral, the fuel line piece you used as a "sleeve" so you could test with your test gas tank's 1/4" fuel line, would you leave that on if the generator fuel tank hose was also a 1/4" line?? Old carb that I'm replacing has a 1/4" inlet and new samazon carb inlet is smaller, like the one in this video. Is the "sleeve" something you would do for long term fix or not??
You took the words right out of my mouth when you said that those aftermarket carburettors are a bit " hit & miss ". When I replaced the Honda GX35 engine on my dads UMK435 brush cutter the carburettor on the new Chonda engine was bad because I couldn't adjust the aftermarket Walbro WYL (4 stroke) type of carburettor. Every time it either wouldn't start from cold or it would start then stall , that was until I adjusted the low speed mixture adjustment screw but if I ran the engine at full throttle then I released the throttle then the engine would falter then stall. It wouldn't start & run until I readjusted the low speed mixture adjustment because when I released the throttle the engine flooded with fuel. I watched the Vintage engine repairs channel & the English bloke (it's actually an Australian YT channel) said that means that the high speed mixture adjustment screw needs to be screwed in to make it run Leaner. Well that will work on a WYK (2 stroke) carburettor) but not the WYL type because the high speed mixture adjustment was preset at the factory & it couldn't be adjusted by me. I even drilled the brass plug out of the side & no , there's no mixture adjustment screw underneath it, I had to reuse the original Walbro WYL type of carburettor to get the engine to Run properly !
A friend of mine quite a few years ago got a aftermarket carb for a Honda generator and it wouldn't run so he ordered another aftermarket one put it on and it run Soooo he took it off took it apart and then took the other apart and compared . When they made the first one they forgot to drill the hole in the side of the pickup that goes down in the bowl . He drilled the hole and then it worked fine . Then only thing wrong with the original Honda carb was hidden jet was plugged up from rotting gas but he didn't know about that jet at the time .
The last carbitraitor I bought was a Bendix for a 1953 Hogly-Furguson because the M74B (solid brass body) Linkert that was on it didn't have an accelerator pump. Coarse that war almost 40 year ago.
The stuff does work. Bought some after watching it on Tyral's previous video to this one. Used it on about 15 riders and a few push mowers that had been around about 6ths to a year. Huge difference overnight. Good bye Stable Aid.
Love your videos man , keeps you watching with the built in comedy ! I’m getting ready to rebuild a Techumpseh H50 I have had since my youth , I’m almost 60 now. What is a good websight to buy techumpseh parts ? Mine is a H50 65116G
I just did a governor on a H90 recently for my snowblower. I woulda repowered until I saw the PTO on the cam also! I got what I needed ,but I saw even a standard piston wasn't available. Got the stuff thru jacks small engines and a few things off eBay also. Fieabay 😄 Actually that might be a good source, I get tons of new old stock type of stuff for all my cars and stuff. My Tecumseh is newer than yours ,I think mid/late 90s is what I figured.
@@philliphall5198 I don't ever let it get more than 12 months but I keep a lot of gas on hand. Haven't had a problem with staybil but Taryl says pri-g is better. I'll probably switch.
I always throw that old fuel in our cars... The fuel injection can adjust fuel trims with the O2 sensors.. So it doesn't have any problems burning old fuel.. As long as you have plenty of good fuel mixed with it. These carbs are very particular with the quality of the fuel though.
He's passed out on eggnog and fruit cake. You are what you eat. Little Johnny must eat devil's food cake and devilled ham and devilled eggs and Chicken Diablo and Creeple People gummies. Hate that kid!
Old Hr215 mowers have a backwards throttle compared to modern Honda BEWARE the China carb throttle will be “WOT” wide open throttle and you’ll have about 15 seconds before the flywheel explodes or motor blows! Good luck and ps that smoke on start is normal Honda , valve seats are optional 😂🎉
The unanswered question is will it run properly at it's rated 5000 watts because when it's running close to its max that's when that carburetor has gotta be right...
Drain the carbetrator and run the gas out or if the float bowl has a drain, drain it. Looks like it was more of a choke problem than old fuel. There's my Monday night dinner.
I use and tell customers to get fuel from the our small local airport if storing or if short use of generator use and during extend use just use non ethanol and run it out when done and store with air plane fuel. This fuel seems to have years of life not like regular gas
HEY Taryl! I need a favor!!!! Can you put up the "Add Fuel Light to Almost Anything" Video please!?!?! A group of Ultralight Aviation dudes wants to use it so they dont run outta Fuel Mid Air. :)
It's an issue storing gas in a Generator you may or not need! There should be a way to blow it all out after a weather episode! Like a tap! Not just a shut off and run till it out.
In these smaller ope’s AM carbs they can be hit/miss. I usually end up combining with oem to run correctly, BUT for folks who think they can use AM carbs for atv/utvs/dirt/street bikes…yeah that’s a no go. I’ll tell them bring me the oem or I’ll by a used oem, rebuild and get running correctly. The chinesum just ain’t got the larger more critical carbs figured out yet.
for gas treatment. i use supertech motor treatment. knock off of seafoam. put in my van that gets used 2 times a year. with full tank. i put in all 5 gal gas cans, generator empty out and treat always run carb out of gas . i use premix cans for weed whip add treatment run out of gas. or premix in weed whip. lasts 5-7 yrs. chainsaw reg mix but run out treat run out carbs. no one believes me. but great gas storage.always add more wont hurt it. put in all my gas. car. 2 cycle. works great! no lies.😊😊😊😊
It’s a gamble on the Chinese carbs Best to have the original carbs rebuilt by a shop and a real mechanic If not buy a oem but with out cleaning tank you might destroy it also Take it to a good local shop 😊
Thank you Taryl and crew for another year of great tutorials and entertainment!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my fellow grass rats!!

Taryl a wealth of knowledge $$$!
If you don’t have a selection of spacers like Taryl, you can simply use a larger nut that slides over the stud
Or stack several washers.
A reminder for people to take your time and ensure you assemble it correctly, take pictures in disassembly should one be unsure so that you can put back all the linkages correctly when reinstalling. Good video Taryl as always. Cheers.
Drain and clean tank, don’t put the problem in the new carb 😢😢😢😢
Another very informative video! Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge with us 😊.
Happy New Year Taryl!
Happy Holidays Taryl and Company

Taryl the great!
Neat channel. Very informative. Lots of common sense!
Have an AWESOME New Year, Taryl !!!!! Thanks for everything in 2024!

I'm betting that's what I've done with 2 identical engines and multiple carbs gaskets in those kits. One runs perfect. Same carb on both now. Of course one engine came without a carb. Gonna trace back my steps and compare carb set ups. Thanks so much and happy new year.
Good work!😀🛠
Great video Taryl on fixing the generator.
I learn so much from your repairs.
Thank You. Happy New Year.
My wife and son got me Taryl Apparel for Christmas. She said the customer service was bar-none excellent. Thanks!👍🎄

ive seen this a few times. sometimes the pilot jet is undersized also, pin drill and the surge goes away. (the small plastic jet that goes in up-top)
Nice generator!
Please get the equipment your working on up to bench height, save your back and knees, we need you around for a long time!!! Love your work and humor.

That's what my parents always said. 😢
Happy New Year 🕛 you and yp

Taryle the trig is great stuff, it might be costly but I say it's worth paying for instead of ruining or replacing parts. Happy new year to all
Knuckle heads not watching taryl's video's before doing there own repair. Happy new year grass rats. AND THERES YOUR LEFT OVER TURKEY.
I have ALWAYS had good fuel storage (with non-ethanol fuel, of course) by using Sta-Bil original. As soon as I get home with the filled cans, I put the prescribed amount into each can. My chainsaw cut a lot faster once I realized it had this switch thing and pull handle rope deal that makes it cause a big racket when cutting.
Taryl, what is your preferred method for disposing of old gas?
Hey Tryll, Why don't you use your lift table when you work in your machines? Wouldn't it be easier on your knees or back?
Good morning
Spark Plug was a Hit at Christmas 🎅
Once fuel is old, adding stabilizer is like pissing and then pulling down your pants.
I agree dump it and flush tank
Oh that’s what I’m doing wrong…
You're right. Stabilizer's are meant to keep good fuel good, not to turn bad fuel good! Taryl said at the beginning of the video, that he always drains the tank and gives it back to the customer dry. So what does he do? He pisses in the tank with that stabilizer and gives it back to the customer!
😂@@blowupbob1
My first instinct would be try to find a steo down adapter joint of barbed tubing then put on small-adapter-1/4 inch
Then only thing wrong with the original Honda carb was hidden jet was plugged up from rotting gas but he didn't know about that jet at the time .
hole on carb is on opposite side of where manifold hole is . iam confused
Mornin gentlemen!
Taryl not only has good looks, but he is smart too!
@5:20 the air box gasket is damaged.
The last carbitraitor I bought was a Bendix for a 1953 Hogly-Furguson because the M74B (solid brass body) Linkert that was on it didn't have an accelerator pump. Coarse that war almost 40 year ago.
Made of 🪵 wood ?
Put a block of wood under the bat-tery when I converted it from 6 volts to 12 volts.
taryl you need to load test all EG after repair it may run good with no load but with a full load fall on its face hook two 1500w heaters than test
Imagine telling this man how to test stuff. Also, did you not see him load test it?!
I love my edelbrock carbatrator.
It's just a leaky toilet bowl sitting on top of the manifold...compared with multi-port fuel injection!
After watching the video about Pri-g, I bought a bottle and use it on gas I have sitting for a long time.
Fieabay 😄
Actually that might be a good source, I get tons of new old stock type of stuff for all my cars and stuff.
My Tecumseh is newer than yours ,I think mid/late 90s is what I figured.
@@MrTheHillfolk ok thanks for the info !
Done & Done!
Taryl when testing do you use Non Eyentol fuel and do you recommend using that type of fuel
Never use the regular pump fuel
It’s cheaper but you will pay dearly later
No corn syrup in your fuel for small engines
little bit o snake oil for the fresh dinosaur juice Happy New Year!!!!
Soon as my bottle of staybil is gone I'm getting that pri-g.
I was thinking the same. Until I saw the price!
It’s good stuff but it’s best to just drain it and put in your vehicle
Small engine required fresh fuel and clean
@@philliphall5198 I don't ever let it get more than 12 months but I keep a lot of gas on hand. Haven't had a problem with staybil but Taryl says pri-g is better. I'll probably switch.
I always throw that old fuel in our cars... The fuel injection can adjust fuel trims with the O2 sensors.. So it doesn't have any problems burning old fuel.. As long as you have plenty of good fuel mixed with it. These carbs are very particular with the quality of the fuel though.
What did you do with old man slipers
He's passed out on eggnog and fruit cake.
You are what you eat.
Little Johnny must eat devil's food cake and devilled ham and devilled eggs and Chicken Diablo and Creeple People gummies. Hate that kid!
When I buy used equipment, it is always the process of fixing what the previous owner/s have screwed up.
Nice job. What did you charge for the repair
1 dinner.
@@michaelotoole1807with all the fixins
Old Hr215 mowers have a backwards throttle compared to modern Honda BEWARE the China carb throttle will be “WOT” wide open throttle and you’ll have about 15 seconds before the flywheel explodes or motor blows! Good luck and ps that smoke on start is normal Honda , valve seats are optional 😂🎉
Taryl, another generator guy out there has a great repair channel is James Condon.
Bring your torque wrench!
Gotta agree with the two other guys, the gasket "YELLOW " is on wrong,
hey Taryl, any chance you could do one on rebuilding a cub cadet Zero turn with the transmissions slipping.
what is that small hole on the engine side for? the new carb does not seem to be designed for that.
Most of this newer stuff has a screen filter on the valve that will clog from old gas !
Awesome
Good idea checking with big hole it would cause Air leak
Sounds like it running to lean
You could try using the old gas and squirting it in the carb as a Test
The unanswered question is will it run properly at it's rated 5000 watts because when it's running close to its max that's when that carburetor has gotta be right...
All right!!!
Probably 5mm fuel line? I'd repair the Honda carburetor if possible and run that, Honda carbs are well made.
Add the choke, not hooked up
Do you work on time machines? I put an aftermarket carb on mine and it sent me to 1979. I was trying to get to 1998.
Tyrell, always turn off the fuel to shut down anything with a karbertrator. Clean karbertrators are happy karbertrators. Ethanol sux!
HEY Taryl! I need a favor!!!! Can you put up the "Add Fuel Light to Almost Anything" Video please!?!?! A group of Ultralight Aviation dudes wants to use it so they dont run outta Fuel Mid Air. :)
Wonder if that pri-g will work on my 25 year old gas.
Trial and error. Got to give the guy credit for trying. Attention to detail’s is key.
It's an issue storing gas in a Generator you may or not need! There should be a way to blow it all out after a weather episode! Like a tap! Not just a shut off and run till it out.
A drain should be law on everything.
I doubt it was bad gas because you didnt drain the float bowel which was already filled up with the old gas.
for gas treatment. i use supertech motor treatment. knock off of seafoam. put in my van that gets used 2 times a year. with full tank. i put in all 5 gal gas cans, generator empty out and treat always run carb out of gas . i use premix cans for weed whip add treatment run out of gas. or premix in weed whip. lasts 5-7 yrs. chainsaw reg mix but run out treat run out carbs. no one believes me. but great gas storage.always add more wont hurt it. put in all my gas. car. 2 cycle. works great! no lies.😊😊😊😊
Morning gang!
It Ain't got no gas in it... Sling blade Voice! Berry Manifold? Song I Write the song's For Small engine's...
🎶Just to send it on down the line!
Wonder why the carb didn't have a hole matching the gasket.
Did Lil Johnny finish up the fuel gage install on Gwampas mowin machine?
The owner installed that gasket backwards and the choke was insalled wrong
It’s a gamble on the Chinese carbs
Best to have the original carbs rebuilt by a shop and a real mechanic
If not buy a oem but with out cleaning tank you might destroy it also
Take it to a good local shop 😊
Now the customer is going to put it in storage for 16 months 🤦
Should have dropped the bowl to make sure there was no trash since the customer ran it on the tank without cleaning and refreshing the fuel
They just keep destroying the new carbs because they don’t remove and clean tank and dump fuel
What is needed is an off line carburetor tester
I've had good luck with a couple Chinese knockoff carbs. Like everything, buyer beware.
Probably had about 90% success personally....
Sometimes, you have no choice due to availability.
I put a scamazon knock off on a Stihl weed Wacker.. for $11 bucks but doesn't run as good as the OEM . But it's tolerable
