    Eyo and welcome to my Fleet Histories series where we take a look at the operational history of aircraft fleets both active and retired. Passenger airliners are normally featured, although freighter and government aircraft will be covered occasionally. This series was inspired by the videos of elmauriplatense, Ibirdball, Scaring Crab, and many other aviation UA-camrs.
    Flying Tiger Line (aka Flying Tigers) began 747 operations when they acquired a surplus 747-100 from American Airlines and converted it to freighter configuration in 1974. This was the first passenger 747 to be converted for cargo use. The airline continued using converted passenger 747-100s until they received their first pure freighter, a 747-200F, in 1979. Flying Tigers utilized these aircraft on many of their intercontinental services until they merged with Federal Express (later FedEx). Federal Express inherited their aircraft, but didn't use the 747s as frequently as their other aircraft types. They were finally retired in 1999.

    My Grandfather worked out at the Flying Tigers facility at SFO in San Francisco from 1969 to 1987. He loved that company and they treated him like gold. I can remember going out to the maintenance hangers with him in 1984 and hanging out with his crew as they worked on 747's. Great memories. I miss ya' Grandpa.

      Very interesting experience! Your Grandpa must've been very fond of his job, especially with his love for Flying Tigers and the way the company treated their employees. May his soul rest in peace.

    I remember flying a Flying Tigers 747 on a Gov't contract flight from St Louis to Okinawa via LAX and Anchorage in 1989. The things that have stuck with me from that flight were that the aircraft had a strange registration number (not a "N" number), all the placards inside the cabin were in Arabic and how tired the flight crew was as they said this flight had started at Clark AB and they were working the flight until the aircraft got back to the Philippines.

    • @RetroAvi8or
      @RetroAvi8or  4 роки тому +3

      Interesting experience! The aircraft must've been returned from a lease, hence the non-American registration and the Arabic placards.

    Flew on one of the FT 747 passenger planes in July 1991 returning from Saudi Arabia & Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Wish I’d had the presence of mind to get the tail #. Imagine it was one of these pictured.
    BTW, my late Father served in WW2 over in China behind Japanese lines w/SACO. Worked w/the Chinese Nationalists, Communists, & OSS against the Japanese.

    Flew from JFK to Barbados in 1981. BWIA going & Flying Tigers back. Even felt like a freight carrier. Seats just stuck in there.

    • @georgeconway4360
      @georgeconway4360 11 місяців тому +1

      Incorrect no seats were just stuck in there. Tiger 747s were not converts.Tigers did receive a few 747 passenger airplanes from Singapore. Since the world economy went bad there was no demand for the airplanes The airplanes went to the Flying Tiger Line and there was a scramble for business. That’s when Tigers created Metro.

    When I flew overseas, I see this plane on the tarmac where we were loading at and I thought. "oh boy, a private carrier with stewardesses". Boy, was I ever wrong. It was a transport. One big long straight metal tube from forward to aft. No stewardesses, nothing. Just a long ass plane ride. I don't remember it being a 747 though. I remember it being like a regular plane. Carried our sea bags (sea bags = Navy. I was a Navy Corpsman assigned to the FMF) on and held them between our legs the whole way. Flew from California to Alaska then to Kadena AFB, Okinawa. Such a miserable time, and much more miserable times laid ahead.

      @RetroAvi8or  3 роки тому +1

      Oooh interesting story! From what I've read, Flying Tiger's 747s were frequent visitors to Kadena AFB in the 80s. They flew a weekly service from St. Louis-Los Angeles-Anchorage-Kadena AFB-Clark AFB. Thanks for sharing!

      I know in 1978 it suck flying but it was not a 747 it was a DC 8 no music, movie and cheap seat. Also box lunches that the Air Force gave us and that too such. Long way to Korea with a stop in Japan.

      I remember that day, I was in the hanger at LAX when we got the news. One of the men in the hanger went out to the front of the High Tiger and lowered the flag to half mast. His name was Bobby Bartling. N806FT had Bobby's fathers name painted on that plane. William E. Bartling was Flight Leader 1st. Sqdn. of the Flying Tigers AVG and co-founder of the Flying Tiger Line.
