I worked for Flying Tigers in Chicago from '78-'88. I worked the ramp and the warehouse. I can still Off and On load the DC8 and the 747s side and nose loads. It was a great company to work for until Steven Wolf took charge. I have so many great memories of that time. I was and still am very proud to say the I worked for Tigers. FedEx ruined a good thing. I also believe that we had some of the best pilots in the industry. They flew those planes like they were born in them. Thank you for making this video, brought back tons of memories and a big smile.

THANK YOU for posting this! That super connie is my love! As a side note; EAA Airshow Fly-In at OshKosh, WI 1988 - a Flying Tigers DC-8 did a gorgeous 8 point barrel roll along the length of the runway, holding each position for a couple seconds. Wingtip maybe 15 feet off of runway. AWE inspiring!!

It was cool to see the swing-tail CL-44's in there too. One mysterious airplane, in that they weren't around long.

I flew on one of those CL-44's in 1963 to Clark AFB the Philippines starting at Travis AFB CA then to Anchorage Alaska on to Tachikawa AFB Japan. Maybe you were a stewardess on that flight.

As ZRHFOFT handled DC8-73F (Tigers flight 001 ZRH-CLT) and B747-100/200F (Tigers flight 015 ZRH-ORD-ANC). Later got those DC-30Fs from FEDEX.

From 2:10 to about 2:30 you see pics of DC-stretch-8 Flying Tiger aircraft. These were in use by the company in the late 60's and early 70's. 4 were on the ground at ORD (Chicago O'Hare) every night from 1 a.m to 4 a.m. They were unloaded and reloaded then sent on their way. It took about 100 workers (part time and full time) to make it happen.

My father also worked for this company for many years. As a kid I flew in the cockpit of the prop cargo planes. I wish I knew what kind they were.

FTL was always a risky proposition as were the other two cargo only traditional airlines in the US. Fedex and UPS seem to have been far more successful because they have a much better pickup and delivery operations which is a very strong point with customers over a variety of service and price considerations. In the early sixties Tigers had a very bad safety record and probably were suspended by the military for passenger operations as a result of several accidents which never should have happened. In one case a crew had been on duty for 33 hours at the time more than double what is allowed today. For a time in the late sixties they were allowed back into passenger with DC-8-63s which held more than 707-320s, and seemed to be more satisfactory but those dwindled after Vietnam ended.
