I will never forget the excitement I felt opening up Persona 5 for the very first time. Believe it or not there was a point in time where it felt like this game was never going to come out. I got into Persona back when P4 was the hot craze and I remember obsessing over the release of this game. I read every article I could, scouring for a release date, but made extra sure to avoid those PV trailers so I could go in as spoiler-free as possible. After years of delays and avoiding any Japanese leaks like the plague, the game was finally in my hands and yeah, it felt pretty cathartic. I still remember a friend and I cutting class to play this on launch day. That’s right, as my academics rose in the game, my real-life grades suffered a little bit. Not the best idea in hindsight but hey, we all do dumb stuff when we were young. Finishing Persona 5 for the first time left me feeling a lot of satisfaction. While I thought Persona 4 was still the better game, all things considered, P5 is a great game when all is said and done. But this isn’t what I want to focus on today.
I’ve talked about this game for literal hours over the course of this channel's life. I’ve said basically all that needs to be said about the game at this point so going into any more detail would be a little excessive. So for today, we’re going to shake things up a bit and focus on a different topic entirely. Instead of doing another critique of Persona 5 the game, I want to instead talk about Persona 5 the legacy, and how I feel as though over the years, I feel as though my relationship with this game has shifted. And not in the way that Atlus probably wanted it to. Yeah, this is going to be one of those videos. So strap in folks because today, we’re going to be reflecting on Persona 5’s spinoff era and discussing why it’s time to move on.
Persona 5. It's time to move on from Persona 5. In this Persona 5 Analysis, Persona 5 Review, Persona 5 Critique, I explain why Persona 5 has overstayed its welcome and how It's time to move on from Persona 5. Since Persona 5 Tactica and Persona 3 Reload are right around the corner, I thought it was no better time than now to revisit Persona 5 and explain why it's time to move on from Persona 5. Persona 5, much like Persona 4, received a lot of spin-offs like Persona 5 Strikers, Persona 5 Dancing, Persona Q2, and now Persona 5 Tactica. Nam's Compendium has made a Persona 5 Analysis, Persona 5 Review, and Persona 5 Critique in the past but this is not any of those. Rather it's a Persona 5 Retrospective. You should watch Nam's Compendium Persona 5 Analysis before this one to get some context. It's time to move on from Persona 5 is one of the best videos by Nam's Compendium.

I can’t wait for Tactica to come out and have a story where the main characters form a bond with these quirky new characters made specifically for the game but none of it will matter because they’ll forget everything by the end so the status quo can be kept and anything that these characters possibly learned or felt is completely pointless.

Thank you for putting towards just what frustrates me so much what you spin-offs when they spend so much time on new characters and their relationships and development with the phantom thieves only to revert it right at the end, so we'll never hear from any of them again. Everytime you close a book, the characters dies. Everytime you open it, they back to the beginning. And throughout the whole book, all the adventures and lessons and hardships the characters endure, are nothing but a string of text about a story that is just a fabrication.
I don't think the fact that the characters "forget by the end" or "it never really happened" changes anything, because no work of fiction really happened at the end of the day. What really matters is the story it tells the reader, since you reading a book and seeing and believing the characters hardships, that is a real, and nothing can change that

@@invertebrado There's a point in this, but there's a difference between starting up the beginning of a book vs opening up a new book with the same characters and it going "LMAO" and kinda just accidentally pissing on the last book.

Persona 5 Strikers goes hard, and I’d argue that part of the reason why it is generally considered to be the best spin-off in the series is *because* it doesn’t revert everything by the end and actually functions more as a sequel than a spin-off.
I’ll still play and most likely enjoy Tactica, but…yeah, the formula is real and it’s getting real old.

My biggest worry for Persona 6 (If it even happens) is that a lot of fans will be expecting it to be like Persona 5. When I really want 6 to have it's own identity and stand out. 5 was many people's intro to Persona and that's great, but I'm worried that Atlus will feel pressured to make it like 5 and therefore we'll basically just have yet another Persona 5 game.

@Nahobinoah All Persona games are similar, that's not my point. Persona 5 changed so much of the formula with it's style, tone, combat, and dungeon design. Persona 5 relies heavily on high stakes and hype, which is awesome and I love it but my main point is that I'm hoping Persona 6 to be quite different to that and therefore obtain it's own identity. If you look at Persona 3, 4, and 5 they all have their own distinct presentation and vibe. However, given how popular Persona 5 is and how it basically brought Persona into the mainstream and sold more than any persona game selling around 7 million more copies than Persona 4, I'm just worried that Atlus will feel pressured to make 6 far more like 5 than anything else. This is all just my hypothesis though, we'll see what happens I guess.

Since P3 Atlus found it’s persona formula. I hope that they can open up the game a little more, they create this wonderful word, but limit us a bit to much. I don’t want to change the core focused gameplay, just have more space to do things and enjoy the social links with more time and freedom.
Persona have something great going on, but there is always to improve and evolve the formula.

The sad truth about Persona 5 is that you can’t ever replicated Persona 5. You can add onto it, but you can’t have the same characters or the same comfort without losing something. Persona 5 ends on a note that tells the audience that the characters are gonna grow, even without you seeing it. And while its nice to see what its like after the first story, I can’t help but feel its undone when these characters are constantly shifted back to their stereotypical selves. You can have sequels and spin offs, but you can’t have them be persona 5 but “different”. Atlus can’t have their cake and eat it too.

I think in the case of P5 Dancing and PQ2, they wanted to present those in a way that wouldn't spoil too much for people who hadn't played the main game for some reason. That's why the characters are reduced to simple caricatures of themselves, going too much deeper would reveal some of the deeper conflicts from the main game that are best discovered organicly.

I think, for me, if they were going to do more Persona 5 games, I’d like to see more sequels like Strikers. It would be interesting to have a sequel with a bigger time skip, like to the present year. Given that P5 takes place in 2016/17, that would put the Phantom Thieves in their early 20s, which could make for a fresh story dynamic.

This became my favourite game of all time, only outclassed by Royal when I played on Switch earlier this year. I played this game at the perfect time in my life, just like you. It's so hard to just put away, I've essentially grown up with the Thieves these past few years, so it's a little painful seeing them all so mistreated. I'd love a Persona 6 to help move on, or maybe Persona 3 Reload will help me unlock some things I missed when playing P3P and make *that* my new favourite game. I can definitely feel ya Nam! Persona 5 is truly a special game and while Royal and Strikers were worthwhile releases, it is sad how Atlus is using the game and milking it because they know it will make money. I played Dancing expecting some fun, and outside of me just sucking at the game, it was unfun because yeah, the story is non-existent and the characters are one noted. At this point, the most excitement I got is finally trying Atlus' other games SMT Nocturne and SMTV for the first time. Otherwise I haven't had the same joy since playing P5 Vanilla, Royal, and Strikers. But what sucks is that on repeated playthroughs when you know enemy weaknesses and how to prepare, the game becomes less of a challenge overtime, even on its hardest difficulty. I practically know every corner in Persona 5 Royal to the point that the most fun I had recently was boundary breaking the scenes with a mod. And you know the story, so you end up fast forwarding through long cutscenes on repeated playthroughs. I'll always love Persona 5, but that love does feel stale overtime. Like you got the message and we should have enough of it, but yet, it's somehow stuck with you because of popularity over how special it is. As someone who's more well known for Persona and did 2 challenge runs on Royal, I have had pretty much enough of the game. Heck the community is running out of challenge run ideas on the game that it's become that overplayed. I will always treasure it. But I am experiencing fatigue from being reminded of it all the time. I definitely hope Tactical is a good game and I know for sure Persona 3 Reload will be a special remake of the game, if not the best way to experience Persona 3. But at this point, I just want Persona 6 already. And if not Persona 6, something else.

Great video. You hit the nail on the head. My biggest problem with the spin off games is the reduction of the characters and the plots that are technically canon, but everyone forgets everything so any character development is null. While I love the q games, they suffer the worst from this trope. The p4 spin offs at least attempt to continue the characters story, even if they don't pull it off well and p5 strikers was fantastic in the way that it truly felt like a sequel and not a side story. I'm more interested in persona 6 than I am the new games that are coming out.

  • @PetrosofSparta
    @PetrosofSparta 8 місяців тому +10

I have a slightly different perspective on this personally. I only got into the franchise after the 2020 Steam release of P4G. I was already 33 when I played this and while I love it and have a huge attachment to it, it's perhaps not the same as someone who like yourself has being the age of the characters. I've since played all the modern mainline games - currently on Strikers and am also replaying P4G right now to get the Marie stuff done (will likely do the same with P5R soon too).
While I agree with the statement that it's time to move on from P5, I don't disagree with that fundamentally at all. A lot of what youv'e presented here feels a little contradictory and along the lines of "I must play every spin off without failure".
P5 has had mini games like dancing and a a multi-game spin off in Q2 for a system that doesn't even exist anymore it's been so long since it came out. It's big "Spin off" is Strikers, and whether you want to call it a sequel or a spin off is kind of neither here nor there, it's in the category of milking P5, and in this case, as you've said, P5S is so good you don't even want to count it. I've played Tactica recently and honestly think it's great, I'm a little bummed personally it seems light on story though but I love the idea of a tactical RPG like XCom / MarioRabidds in Persona form, it's a perfect fit - much better than a fighting game or dancing game for example and much more a good time sink.
Anyway, what I was going to say was, while I defo think it's time to move on from P5 - I think you're being a little harsh on the spin offs and side games, when at least one of them was so good you can't even count it as a spin off by your own words and Tactica, as a game style fits the Persona mould so much better anyway - though my fear of most tactical games being uniteractive cutscenes between combat seems to be coming true.
Many of my favourite series seem to be taking longer and longer with development. Final Fantasy and Zelda both have just gone through 6/7 year periods between entries (Zelda great as it is... given it's reusing so many assets, just how and whyy!?) but the truth is I think I feel this less and less. The wait between FF10 and FF12 was only four years but feels as long as 13 to 15 (7 years) did. What I think I'm saying is, that yeah things are taking longer, but you'll notice it less as you get older. I love Persona and wish P6 would come out soon, but I don't think games like Strikers and Tactica really detract from that, and as for Dancing, we'd get complaints if it didn't exist (probably the same for Q2 also).

I agree that it is time to move on from Persona 5, however there is a critical detail that Atlus keeps teasing fans for years but never fully gives us.
It is about Sae Niijima's romance. Atlus didn't allow players to date Sae in the game but kept teasing players with the possibility. Datamines from the game indicating she was romanceable during development, encouraging players to challenge to date her in the Dancing game, and giving a date in the anime OVA. (btw she was the last date shown after the credits, indicating it was special).
Atlus knew that Sae would be the number one romance pick for many players. So my guess is that they cut it out so they could use it in the future for some more Persona 5 milking. So i bet we will still have more Persona 5 spin-offs until they finally give us the grand finale with her as a datable option.
My guess is that this will happen in 2026, 10 years after OG Persona 5 released and just before Persona 6. It could be just a new spin-off game in the future or just a new revision from Persona 5 with some slightly more content. Regardless many players would be willing to pay again for a chance to date her and Atlus knows this. That is why they kept teasing us since 2016 but never fully giving.

i also try to keep up with a lot of different franchises that tend to be 100+ hour long playthroughs to fully complete and a bit of breathing room with side games is fine with me. of course, i get the opposite perspective as well. but the opposition could just not buy the games and go play something else as well.

With that being said, persona 5 tactica hasn't really excited me yet at all. The best way I can describe it so far is that it feels a little soulless. I really hope I'm wrong and that its an enjoyable experience in both gameplay and story. Though I don't feel quite as negatively towards the overall state of persona 5 as you and many others do, I can see where you are coming from and do agree to some extent. Great video!

It's very funny to see this when it was just in the past 2 months I was able to finally play thru P5 (Royal on Switch) myself, whilst I have some considerable gripes with the game it has left me with a lot to think about while simultaneously feeling a little late to the party. I definitely can feel the exhaustion from oversaturation with just seeing the spinoffs come out left and right.
I do find it a bit disappointing that when we're finally breaking free from P5 it's just to retread old grounds with a P3 remake that won't exactly be a definitive version but just another choice to play that game with its own pros and cons.

As a big P5 fan (and that game was responsible for me going back to persona in general. My last persona game before P5 was P2 EP!) I wholeheartedly agree! It's time. It's like when you watch a TV show that should have ended 3 seasons ago. Dragging things out just lessens the experience. I really do believe that absence can make the heart grow fonder & I think we'll be able to look back on P5 with a better sense of affection if we take some time away from it! Great video! It says pretty much what I've been thinking.
That being said, will I still consume fan-content? Oh yes I will! Because of how transformative it tends to be, that (for me) will be the best way to revisit P5! Fan Art, AUs & Fan Fiction will keep the flame burning!

Also, just to add, I really hope P6 will involve adults. I think for the massive fan-base it accrued in almost a decade, I think it would be wise to graduate from the P5 Adolescence into maturity since a lot of fans are now adults. I know P2 EP tackled that but I'm sure Atlus can find topic to use as commentary on adult life.

Persona 3 blew my mind when I first played it all those years ago. Persona 4 offered a different tone and a charming new set of characters. By the time P5 rolled around... well, it was freaking great, as expected but something didn't *quite* do it for me at the end of the day. I've heard Katsura Hashino might not be directing Persona 6, dunno if true or not, but I think this could be a welcome change. I feel like the series is starting to stagnate. Visually, it has never looked better, but creatively it really is starting to lose its shine.
When P4 was new, I was gobbling that shit up. Manga? Let's go. Anime? Hell yeah. Fighting games? Fuck yeah I love ArcSys. This did not happen with P5. I felt *done* with it when I beat it. It was a good game, a by-the-books persona experience wrapped in amazing visuals and strong soundtrack. Didn't feel the need to see more of the characters and stories in... whatever the fuck else came out after that had P5 slapped on the box.
Not even Royal could bring me back. I'm a doctor. I played P5 (the OG release) when I was in my second year of medical school. Took me a good two months to beat it. I'm at a point in my life where asking me to replay a whole-ass 90-odd-hour game to get to the extended segments is a tall order... But going beyond that, I'm just... not interested. Not interested in the same tired tropes, the same "teenagers against some godly embodiment of a societal ill." Just not interested.
    I want something new.

I really like Strikers but I think it also suffers from the same character simplification Q2 and especially Dancing suffers from.
And it's shame, because I really do feel like The Phantom Thieves both as a group and individually can continue growing but instead, all we get is small timbits of characters saying things to get them plot moving well the only ones that really go through a shift throughout the game are the new ones.
It just sucks because I do think a lot of members of the main cast in particular Ann Ryuji and Futaba can continue to develop into their arcs where that be their immaturity, social anxiety, or what not. Instead, we get a smaller dose of some members of the thieves being slightly connected with the villain of the week (or striker 's case jail) where the dynamic and introspection Is nowhere near as good as the one offered by the base game.

Absolutely feel you on the narrative spin-off stuff. Granted, I haven’t played P5 Dancing or Q2, but I’ve played Q1 and know it was the same deal there. Particularly having played it before Persona 4 and having gotten nothing from the P4 cast at that time, the narrative dead zone makes these games bad introductions to these characters. Which is a problem for a Persona game, even a spin-off.
Oh, and just a reminder that, as someone who HAS played proper Etrian Odyssey games, Q drops the ball on that end too. Those games may be fine as a whole package, but neither half of the crossover holds up on its own. Some neat ideas, though (the elemental phys skills made Shinjiro one of my mainstays).

Thank you for posting this. I've been thinking about this lately, especially with Tactica, the mobile spin-off and the recently rumored mobile remake. Persona 5/Royal is one of my favourite games of all time but the more they milk it, the less respect I have for the franchise as a whole. How many times do we have to see another variation of: The Metaverse is back and notable bad person needs their heart changed in a palace. What made P5/R so special was the character development, and seeing how they grow and overcome the cards they have been dealt by working together and forming bonds. The sequels and spin-offs can't have character development (aside from non-canon side characters), because they've already been developed. Atlus should really just focus on Persona 6 or original titles at this point.

I kind of get your point, but at the same time, we're very clearly at the end of P5's lifecycle anyway, so I don't really see why this video needed to exist. We're getting, at most, maybe 1 more game after Tactica (possibly P5 Arena), and then we'll be moving on to P6, where you're just going to end up having the same complaints. "It's getting milked! Finished Playing 5 royal a couple months and just started 4 golden last week and am absolutely love it. I can now see and agree why people regard 4 as the best persona game.
Aside from that, when Atlus eventually decides to move on and make a new persona game, I truly hope the main cast are adults and the story focuses on the hardships of adult life. There is so much potential in exploring Japan Adult life. I loved the character of Zenkichi Hasegawa in strikers and feel they created him to test the waters of adult charcters. Have the MC be an adult fresh off of Highschool and just started an office job where he meets the 1st friend character who is someone who just started working a year before you and was instructed to teach you the ropes. and after the 1st couple days he learns what kind of shit hole of a company he just joined.
