Perfect timing Mike. I'm working on my 1904 initial test fitting/measuring as I type

short 5.325 rods I think work the best. then if you have at least a 50cc combustion chamber shim out to near 0 to .025 and use the copper head gaskets. this will get you the least detonation. verify the numbers on that on the cb calculator. best under 9 to 1 I like 8.5 or 8.25 but I went 9 and it is fast but has some issues when climbing hills. really need to slow down a lot.

@@Mikefngarage i have the AA 5.325s. Bearings actually fit on this set, no issues with the tangs being pinched. I have a set of 59cc AA 500 heads, running. 045 deck would get me 8.3 compression with a CB 2280 cam. Ideally I want to run 8.5, so I may send these out to be cut down slightly

@@muzzcovw7674 yea the ones on the 1800 were fine too. Yea I would run 0 deck and 60 copper head gaskets. if you can. I am not sure where your pistons come out with no shims. 45 is pretty tight. they say that is the minimum number. So if your going to have them cut and you go too far on the cc...you can do 40s they only make 40 and 60 coppers. Tighten the barrel shims up close to 0 and get a total shim of 50 to 60 if possible.

    • @Mikefngarage

total deck to head of 50 to 60

@@Mikefngarage So I'm at .025 without shims. I've always tried to run between .040 and .060, so I have room for a little more having the heads cut. Personally I avoid copper head gaskets on street engines. Seen too many issues with them to want the bother.

Thankyou for the video Mike, lots of info. Makes me want to build a backup engine. I hate the stock oil sump plate studs. On all my engines I screw button head allen screws from the inside out ( P.I.T.A. but never strip or back out). I like your build. I have a similar one with my 1835. I love my FK-7 Cam and 1.4 rockers w/044 Panchito Heads.

Yes; I have seen that trick. You put bolts with the matching thread and size from the top down.

Done the capscrews myself when I installed a self fabbed steel mini sump to trap the oil at the pickup. Worked well for occasional circuit racing I was doing with my every day 1775 road car. I scollaped the case around the sump hole between stud locations to help the oil into the sump. The diameter of the sump was 130mm and the depth similar to a Berg 3.5 quart. A magnet was a worthwhile addition.

Hey Mike ! a new Moresa lifter and new Autolinea case the lifter will only wobble 0.0015 the limit is 0.003 and that's with the lifter up out of the hole 1/4" , seated on a use case will give a false reading .

I believe that Moresa brand is from Mexico.

I also had a 65 Dormobile that I bought From a guy in ChinoHils for 600 bucks. Time to sell all my guitars, amps and other stuff and get another Bus and Bug. I'll be 60 this year so time to thin the herd and get some VWs again.

Great video, Mike! What's your opinion on use of windage trays in the sump to help with foaming or oil starvation during cornering? Are they even necessary? Also what is your opinion on the oil pumps that have the spin on oil filter housing?

Don't use Felpro rubber valve cover gaskets . they slowly shrink and then one day oil will run down on exhaust pipe and it makes a mess .

yea they have a 74 engine kit but you need to modify it for either 90.5 or 88 or what you want Best to call them. I told Shane it was coming. I will talk to Shane and Ron to make sure they are ready for stuff you guys want. Also Shane can do the piston skirts for you if you dont want to on the 88s. .200 off the skirts. Make sure to start off with a fresh line bore. I like using Performance workshop for that. they are in Riverside as well.
