  • Personal review of English climbing rose” The pilgrim” from ‪@david_austin_roses‬
    Introduced in 1991, this fast growing vigourous climber is free, flowering and reaches comfortably 12 feet ,
    It’s pairs perfectly with climbing rose James Galway in size and habit, and is Healthy and quick to establish
    Perfect for growing up, a fence the house or all over an archway. This climber do well in full sun or partial shade.
    The leaves are mid olive green and very matt in texture, and make up the backdrop to enchanting yellow blooms, which open completely flat deeply rosetted at the centre. The outer petals slowly fade to a deep, heavy cream, really highlighting the sherbet yellow colour in the centre. The flowers are held proudly at 90°, shining like little moons.
    The buds are heavy cream tinged with a hint of lime
    The fragrance warm and savoury, mixing clean hybrid tea edges with sage and thyme
    fragrance racing 5⭐️s

    Wonderfully presented, Ben! Thank you for spotlighting The Pilgrim. I had it at one time and sadly lost it in a move, yet it's been on the upper top of my wish list to reclaim again. At a mild 12' he is indeed easily negotiated space wise. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and love of gardening. Blessings to you from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood, Washington!. 💛🖤💛 Stacy

    I've watched and enjoyed so many of your videos, Ben. However, I would love it if you could show the roses you're featuring, such as this one, in situ in your garden. Even if they're not covered in bloom, it would be so helpful to see the whole bush or climber to gain a better idea of its habit. I also would so enjoy seeing your garden as a whole; perhaps you've shown it but if so I've missed it, and of course gardens are constantly changing and it would be lovely to be able to witness that. Thank you for all you do.

    Really enjoying mine received in two months ago. Named after the Pilgrims in the Canterbury Tales. I'm just back from my Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella, Spain.

    The First Rose I bought from DA. It’s my favourite but it’s moving to second place by Gertrude Jekyll

    Just brought this rose and will place this at the bottom of my garden. It has a 6ft fencing. A neighbour has a laurel bush which after cutting back has allowed more sun in this area! May reduce our fence to 4ft to allow more sun light! Sadly possible the most shaded part of my garden, but as it hopefully reaches it expected height! I am hopeful it will get early morning sun from the west and late afternoon from east 🌞 Ben love all your videos, your joy and a inspiration to watch. Thank you 😊

    I also would be interested in knowing which Roses do well in dry, chalky soil. You have a Wonderful Garden, Ben. After 25 years I desired them (was on my Iris-trip meanwhile), finally this year I bought - for now, there are many, many, ehm too much?! Others... - 9 DA Roses. Won't be stopped...

    Never mind I’m not buying Bathsheba anymore I’m gonna try this one as it is simply too good to pass up. Thanks for making this Ben 👍🏼👌🏼

      I have both. They are very young (especially The Pilgrim) but I already love The Pilgrim. Bathsheba performs very well for me but I don't find it as enchanting as this one. It is probably the DA rose I have that I care for the least.

    I’ve struggled with this rose, have had reasonable results some years but never masses of flowers. Seems to get black spot quite readily. I’ve had much better results with Malvern Hills although a different kind of climber. This is probably due to my garden having dry chalky soil which has been improved and obviously I water when dry. I find in dry chalky soil I get the best results from vigorous roses such as Hyde Hall which this year has been so abundant in flowers or climbing roses such as New dawn. Previous many years ago tried Heritage, Winchester Cathedral, and Graham Thomas all faltered suffering badly with black spot. It would be very useful to discover which English roses do better in dryer chalky soils. In do think David Austin have made a big effort to improve the all round performance of their roses with many previous older roses removed and replaced with better performing roses.

    I am buying 2 of this rose to grow on my carport beams of the entrance and also the exit ends. But I want to grow a duo so I need a recommendation of a peachy tone colour to have a contrast . Could you recommend another color that goes well with Pilgrim ? Even a pink or any color I might consider that has same habits as a Pilgrim rose that blooms from bottom to up.
    Thanks !

    I live in CT, USA, and there is a nursery an hour from here in MA that is carrying this rose, and I think I will take a nice drive tomorrow to buy this --- if I can think of where to plant it. I honestly don't do great with roses. I had the gorgeous Pat Austin rose (a coppery tangerine) and it broke my heart twice. They tend to do well for 3 or 4 years for me, then die out.

      @the_gardenerben  2 місяці тому +1

      That’s a shame please do try it again which season does the rose normally die? Is it being frost damaged? Is it possible you’re not mulching over the crown deep enough during the winter or is it possible that they’re not receiving enough water in their first couple of seasons and becoming weak and dying during the summer.

    • @snu3877
      @snu3877 Місяць тому

      Here in the US, in CT we get cold snowy winters, and if roses are going to die, they do it over the winter and don't come back in the spring. I admittedly don't mulch them. (Technically I should not have to in my Zone 6 garden, but next time I try growing one, I will mulch.) @@the_gardenerben

    Definitely getting this. I purchased Teasing Georgia right before it was retired and I believe it’s because it’s not performing well in UK weather. It’s full of rust and black spot as soon as the leaves emerge. Do you think I can plant The Pilgrim in the same spot if I get rid of Teasing Georgia? Thanks
