    I've been growing roses for decades and always on the lookout for the most fragrent roses. So far, the McCartney rose is the most fragrent rose I have ever smelled. They are a beautiful pink bloom. You can easily smell them from 8-10 feet away, and the scent is excellent. I still have one in my garden.

    My fave is Gertrude Jekyll. Strong perfume! If you are looking for the bloom and perfume this is it. The actual bush could be a little prettier, maybe fuller but the blooms are very pretty. This rose’s perfume actually made it up and through my bedroom window! Heavenly scent! Like a fine, French-milled soap. I think roses generally grown better in Europe. Austria does a great job cultivating their roses as does Italy. Giant blooms there!

    Love the Austin roses, but nowhere on anyone's list have I ever seen my favorite, & now it's almost impossible to find--Brother Cadfael. Humongous globular flowers with an old-rose scent to die for. It is almost a climber, or grandiflora. I don't know why no one ever mentions this rose & I fear it will disappear from all the mail order nurseries soon. Thanks for your devotion to the David Austin legacy!

      @vintagelady1 2 роки тому +1

      @@LisaOsterholt Thanks so much, Lisa, sorry it took me so long to notice your reply. I think you might be referring to Der Rosenmeister Nursery? That's the one I saw on Flock finger Lakes, but the Der R. nursery does not sell David Austin roses--they do have a "Brothers Grimm" rose--were you perhaps confusing that with Brother Cadfael? Or have I just missed something?
      David Austin Roses in Texas still sells this rose, but that's the only nursery I can find. So I'm not totally out of luck--yet! I do think I know why it may be out of favor--I've had no luck propagating it at all (I know--naughty me if it's still "copyrighted!") so I wonder if it is difficult to propagate. It's never been popular, & there are other similar Austin roses---he was often criticized for that.But I really thank you for trying to help--if I knew your address I'd send you a "Bro" next spring!

      @@dianetemple4243 Thanks, Diane, I think you mean brother Cadfael, & many months ago I did put myself on the waitlist, I got a notification & dashed to the website to order 3 of them! They are now sitting happily in nice rich potting soil in my "rose nursery, where all of my 47 rosebushes (I have a tendency to overdo things...) are awaiting the completion of my new rose garden. Some will stay in pots, Cadfael does not like it so they will get a prime garden spot. And right after I ordered them, they went out of stock & have not got back for many months. DA bushes are pretty mature, maybe 2 years old, so hard for them to keep up w/ the market---I've also had trouble getting Pr. Alexandra (got it through Regan finally!!) & some I just despair of getting, esp. as I REALLY prefer own-root. But thanks again, I'm hoping I have enough now!

    5:46 I love the chalice/cupped form, she appears to be quartered, and the pink is a lovely, old, vintage shade of pink, not the strongly saturated modern coloration, I love Emily. Gertrude Jekyll deserves such a wonderful namesake. Gertrude Jekyll would not quit until her body forced her to quit. A dear soul in the cottage garden pantheon, long passed on, but left much nostalgic and intrigueing writing and garden plans. Vita Sackville West created high style gardens on a colossal scale where the indentity of the plants were regimented into battalions of "soldiers" in formation, yes, distinguished accomplishments, but Gertrude created gardens where each flower/plant was a distinct, and noticed member in the garden family. I can not write enough good about Jekyll and Gertrude would be quite flattered to have such a superior rose bearing her name. Gertrude was born into English nobility, but what was associated with that was a "drag" for her, Getrude worked like a peasant, her house manners were that of a peasant creating soul meltingly beuatiful gardens, paradise.
    Ralph in Ohio
    Come springtime, I must refer back to this video when deciding which rose to get. I weary of the thought of getting ANOTHER pink rose, but it seems that Gertrude Jekyll is the high scent rose to acquire. And hopefully, i shall be able to acquire a Madame Hardy for her superior quartering in a white bloom. I don't care much for white, to me the color white is an uninteresting blank sheet of paper, but white shows off quartered form much more effectively than darker colors.

    I have a little rose bush called Precious Amber which is described by sellers as lightly scented. Yesterday was sunny and hot, my roses have just started blooming and I went from rose to rose having a good deep sniff, and Precious Amber had a stronger and better perfume than Gertrude Jekyll, who is covered in big blooms this week. I think Gertrude is consistently gorgeous and other roses sometimes hide their scent and only bring them out on certain days because they are THAT EPIC.

    Cannot believe I have six of them, and now one more on the list, if it is available here.

    Yes, thank you so much , Darren. A great Top of the Scants! But please can you tell me how many walls you have on your property??? How many climbers can you fit into a garden? How many archways can a path take? What do you do after the blooms have stopped?

    What about Abraham Darby??? I have most of these varietals, but I have to say, Abe is my most fragrant.

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 2 роки тому +3

      I am delighted to find someone else who loves Abraham Darby. The fragrance is so strong and fruity. And personally I find its blooms the most beautiful of all my roses - on a good day. Unfortunately DA withdrew it in the UK a few years ago, I believe because it is so prone to disease in our climate as the season goes on. I had to cut mine back severely yesterday because the leaves were affected by black spot and rust, and maybe other problems too. It also tends to produce lots of thin wiggling little stems shooting out in all directions. One day perhaps the David Austin team will create something as fragrant and colourfully beautiful as Abe without the disease issue. But I'll cherish my example and enjoy his early-season display again next year.

    I have Strawberry Hill and I think it's the one I sniff the most in my garden. It's such a distinctive smell and this year I think mine has quite an aniseedy scent, especially when it's first opened.
    I'm surprised you didn't include Golden Celebration as I find that one very strong. I'm thinking of going for either Boscobel or Jubilee Celebration next, your description of Jubilee might just have made my mind up for me 🌹 🌹 🌹

    • @suzearl
      @suzearl 2 роки тому +3

      I'm a rose newbie so maybe you can educate me. My first year Strawberry Hill is beautiful and loaded w/ gorgeous blooms. The fragrance is so different from the roses I grew up w/ in our California garden- Mister Lincoln and Peace. Strawberry Hill smells like an old perfume bottle in an antique shop (so THAT"S what myrrh smells like!) But I wonder why my new Strawberry is so lightly scented. Do roses increase in fragrance over time? Does intensity have anything to do w/ the time of day?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 2 роки тому +3

      @@suzearl Rose fragrance is often a topic for discussion, or even heated debate. This is my take on it. The scent is affected by all sorts of factors - soil, feeding, watering, air temperature, the humidity in the air, position in the garden, exposure to the sun, wind, time of day, time of season, air pressure, stage of the bloom's development, and even the person doing the smelling can have stronger or weaker responses to certain types of fragrance (Covid has wiped out many people's responses to some types of rose fragrance, temporarily at least) and the "smeller" can also be affected by what they have eaten, drunk, etc. and be more responsive/sensitive at certain times of the day. Women's sense of smell can peak at certain times of the month. You can see that this whole experience of smelling a rose is incredibly complex and is a two-way process between the rose and the human nose - both contribute to the overall effect.
