I showed this video to several people who don't care about roses and they loved it. My husband said, "I guess it doesn't matter if you're interested in the topic or what it is, watching someone who is truly passionate about something is infectious and entertaining to watch".

My climate in the US is different but I enjoyed the video very much. Interestingly, Scepter d'Isle is my very, very favorite David Austin and the blooms are the visual equivalent of angels singing. It does not ball for me at all but Happy Child balls terribly here.
Lady Emma Hamilton, despite the fabulous color, was my weakest performer and it died this year. I hardly ever kill roses but it was a weakling here. I have several others but Scepter d'Isle is my favorite and it isn't close!

It’s a rose I greatly enjoy to it appears in several of my best of collections including my best for fragrance collection just so you know this is an old video from 2021 the top 20 most recommended roses from myself was refilmed and posted in 2022 to include many more of the new releases from the last few years do you take a look at that one if it’s of interest to you and I created a best for a Drought tolerant selection which may be more of interest to you with your current climate

I bought 5 Princess Alexandra of Kent last year, really looking forward to their flowering, not had that one before. I had about the same quantity as you many years ago, now again have space so building up a collection in our communal garden. I also currently have Roseraie de l’hay, Port Sunlight, Penelope, Shropshire Lass, Cornelia and another yellow one that was already here and I’ve forgotten the name! I only buy scented ones, to me that’s an essential part of these. But I never met a bad DA rose 😊

If I could ask your advice please on a climbing rose for a standard size arch, I was considering St Swithin (I would love Generous Gardener but I think it would be too big) so I'm drawn to St Swithin. I really would like a strong scent and think this would work. If you could help I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks (Tina - Dublin, Ireland)

Hello Ben, thank you for your great video. We have a natural garden with many David Austin Roses. They are amazing. Last year we got new neighbours on the west side of the garden. So I had to move the fence and all plants. 3 month hard work for us…but this year we can enjoy all of our old plants and 7 of your recommended roses. Country parson is my favorite, best performance in the first year and an amazing scent. Emma Hamilton and Ben Austin have been flowering more than the last years. Best regards Karina

Pleased that you are noticing the true colour form and habit of the roses that I’m talking about it is exactly the reason why I launched my series of reviews originally meant for Instagram, as a gardener I get very annoyed by the post production enhancement of photographs much as I love David Austin they are also guilty of this in their magazines and catalogues and even the videos they post online often they are so heavily filtered I can’t tell the difference between particular rose blooms especially as everybody sees colour slightly differently I never filter enhance or edit any of my videos everything is filmed in one take first time hopefully giving you a very true representation of my thoughts feelings and impressions

Really interesting to hear your comments Ben and to see the flowers in each case. I love David Austin roses. I have Scepter'd Isle, Princess Alexandra of Kent and Munstead Wood together in a large raised bed; Eustacia Vye and The Mayflower both new this year and in pots; the rambler Lady of the Lake, the Pilgrim, Teasing Georgia and Claire Austin growing alongside a fence; 5 Kew Gardens as a small hedge out front (no thorns to snag passersby!) and 2 others in the back garden one is a small pink climber and the other a large deep red shrub rose whose names I've sadly forgotten! Oh and Emily Brontë how could I forget her?! But a real favourite of mine is Wild Edric - have you come across him? He's a bit like a rugosa rose with cerise flowers that open fully with a really strong scent. He's incredibly robust and free flowering but he is large and packs some pretty vicious thorns so don't put him somewhere where you're going to have to squeeze past him because he will bite! I do love him inspite of that. He's usually first to flower and goes on for months.
I've pretty much run out of space now, hence the 2 roses in pots, but your videos are very tempting - maybe I can persuade my husband to reduce the size of his shed!

Thank you! I've just starting with DA roses last summer - and luckily I already have in my collection two roses L. D. Braithwaite :). However, as the very first DA, I planted Mary Rose and I think she is also very pretty and very fast growing (The second flush in last summer gave my about 55 flowers within 3 weeks! The shrub is still very small and only 1.6 feet high). I adore also very much the Spirit of Freedom, Othello and Tradescant I already planted in autumn. Also I already have The Prince and Winchester Cathedral. This year I plan to buy: Desdemona, Olivia Rose Austin Munstead Wood and probably William and Catherine. I prefer upright shrub roses and I chose white, pink and red so as not to get too colorful.

I have a one-yr-old Tess of the Dubersilles and it bloomed last summer for the first time. It is small right now but mighty. I cut some stems and they lasted in a vase almost 6 days with a little sugar in the water (my own science experiment). lol. Let me know how your Alnwick does.

      @Froyofreeze Рік тому +1

@@franszymanek8695 My Tess grew very well with fewer blossoms and climbed the structure. Had to cut them down a little to accommodate Christmas lights. Quiet happy with it!
The Alnwick is in a 20 gal pot and had to put up with aphids and sawflies. It was worth it as we enjoyed an abundance of sweet smelling roses.
      We are in zone 8b.

I started planting David Austin roses this year and your videos are amazing! I got David Oak thanks to you, and already had The Lady Gardener. I am looking for a pink / salmon rose to plant in a container, but I can't decide between Boscobel, Eustacia Vye and Jubilee Celebration. Eustacia Vye seems to be the most recommended due to the amazing flowering and health, but I really go for the multicolored petals

Very nice list! I have some of them. The Generous Gardener is probably my favorite. It seems to bloom over and over again, unlike many of the other climbers I have.

Hello Ben, thank you for the list. All of these roses are so beautyful. I have a small garden with a mix of Kordes, Mailland, Tantau and David Austin roses. From David Austin are „Munstead Wood“ and „Lady of Shalott“ . Both where planed last october. On my list are: „Scepter d Island“, „Golden Celebration“ and „Eustacia Vye".😍 But „Emily Bronte" is also a beauty and, and, and……………………😟😉

Lady Hamilton is absolutely beautiful and definitely in my top 3. My personal favourite is munstead wood because I love deep colours so much. I love both for their scents. I always go for the best fragrance, it is very important to me.

@Ben Hamilton Anderson that's really hard to choose. I think I will go with tradescant because it's one of a kind. The darkest david austin rose with an amazing fragrance. It's not too easy to grow and not easy to buy sadly. I had it once, and it died due to harsh weather conditions, and I just can't replace it because it's out of stock all the time. I miss it a lot.

Look up Thérèse Bugnet, an acicularis cross from Canada. Quite hardy, a large bush with double pink flowers, not usually very fragrant but it varies.

You are awesome to watch and we all appreciate your intensity and love for roses. I only have 3 David Austins and only one is in your top ten but it is Lady Emma. The other 2 are Munstead Wood and Boscobel. I am in South Florida so I needed heat resistant types that could hold up to our climate and not ball in the heavy rains and high humidity.

Wow.....l am trying DA roses too but, l am not sure they'll survive the hot N dry summer in tropical Malaysia now.
I am also not sure if 'Joy of life' & 'Lady in Red ' are David Austin's roses. Our monsoon is nasty too :( l have seen my friends' roses 🌹 soaked to the skin :( under the torrential rain.
      What others to try?Thanks.
