    Princess Alexandra of Kent and Princess Ann...wow!
    My zone 4 garden demands David Austins that exhibit a full upright, bushy habit and architecture with strong flowering stems. No droopy blossoms, please!
    Austins were bred for the English climate, also suited to warm zones of the United States. They require winter protection in Canada followed by a hard spring pruning, since they lack cane hardiness in winter areas short of zone 6.
    I miss some of the oldies such as St. Swithun, Mary Rose, Abraham Darby, William Shakespeare 2000 and Jude the Obscure.
    My favourite Austin blossom is 'Munstead Wood'; a dark velvety cherry-wine that reflects the color of my bedroom furniture, lol. I love combining it with 'The Fairy' polyantha rose in a pink glass vase.
    Great Austin review and thank you! 🌹

      @@otchsigua8223 I'd say Princess Alexandra of Kent is #2, huge flowers, last up to 5 days if no rain, and very fragrant. Short climber Tess of The d'Urbervilles I only have had for less than three months, already like it a lot -- fragrant, last long in heat and re-bloom fast. Lady of Shallot is great too, very fragrant, but flowers don't last as long as the last ones I mentioned.

    Thanks Ben for the wonderful interview. I would also love to see the actual whole bush during a review so we can see what it looks like. Also, we know this is a bit of work, would you be able to rate each rose on your lists based on these items like in the help me find site - ‘flowering quantity, flowering qualities, flowering frequency, disease resistance, shade and rain tolerance’ so at one glance, we can look for a rose that best suite our needs. Thanks so much.

    I had a wonderful Lady Emma Hamilton at my previous house. When I ordered Lady Emma for my current house from DA Roses, the root was quite small and the plant had many disease issues. I ended up pulling it out and throwing it away, sadly enough. So I can see why DA has stopped producing it. I hope they are able to figure out a way to produce a healthy LEH in the future- it was a magnificent rose!

I have one that is already in its third year and despite its being in a very ingrateful place, theres never any sun, it is in excellent health, has grown well and give me a lot of flowers even from the beginning of Spring until the beginning of winter. Many thanks for your post, your passion is contagious. 😁I was hoping to see Gertrude Jekyll on the list as we just bought 2. their fragrance and beauty captivated us. We are novices to growing roses, so forgive my question is there any characteristics that we should be aware of that prevent them being in your top 20 and maybe things we should pay attention to? Many thanks

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  Рік тому +1

      My top 20 is compiled each, and every year it changes ever so slightly as new varieties are brought to the market. The top is dominated by roses, bringing together the full package of foliage, disease, resistance, stem, colour and growth figure, combined with flowering period and fragrance much as Gertrude Jekyll is a stunning rose by today’s standards. It’s not particularly high performing and its disease resistance is somewhat questionable. It suffers terribly with black spot when stressed.
      I get lots of messages from people confused that their favourite rose is not included in either the best of selection or in the top 20. These are my growing experiences over the last 28 days from the collection of Roses. The total is 240 different varieties.
      I never offer an opinion of a rose that I haven’t been growing in the garden for less than 18 months, meaning I’m able to give you a detailed description of its growth habit and performance over that time

    Long live Lady Emma Hamilton. Always my number one. I do not understand how they can not get this rose back on track .
    As a brit in Amsterdam I definitely find the rootstock of German roses more robust.
    I bought thisrose when first released for many people they all have made magnificent rose shrubs. My two healthy and very strong.
    Why not find strong source material form people who have original released lady Emma.
    And graft to the stronger European rootstock types. . I guess we all shall have to take cuttings to keep this rose hoping in the future. .lady of shallot is pants in five years its only been a stingy floppy monster recently dug up and thrown away

      @@the_gardenerben I have and I have a bit of a story, I always thought they were shrubs but I found out after purchasing it, found out it's a climber. I asked the person at Halifax perennials (where I bought it) if it's ok with some shade, as the only place I could plant it is behind my garage and it gets sun until noon, he said it needs 4-5 hours of sun at least.. so it could thrive there, but I'm not sure. Another option would be to give it to my mother for mother's day, they have better sun coverage by their house and she would love them. I bought a gentle Hermione and Vanessa Bell for the front of my house, but I'm looking forward to the Queen of Sweden for next year. I'm a big fan of your channel, keep up the good work :)

    Hi Ben
    It takes a wee while to see these here in New Zealand, but I’m on the look out! - Thank you!
    Re R. Gabriel Oak would ‘electric pink’ be a good name for the colour? It reminds me of a rose my Ma grew in her 3/4 acre garden years ago (long before the fabulous DA’s came on the scene… I would sit on her deck and just look about her garden and there was just one rose that would always draw the eye right across her garden like a show stopper. R. Gabriel Oak would do that even better and it’s something most rose growers don’t ask themselves…if you had only x1 rose in your garden to make an impact and draw your eye to a particular area (using colour) what would you choose, please?
    The other type of rose that one rarely sees for sale are the DA single blooms that are simple and elegant and float like butterflies. I’ve been searching for years for them and they are just not available here - Why? - I’m waiting for them to become the latest trend which they really do deserve.

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  Рік тому

      Gabriel Oak, it’s very difficult to describe it is a very vibrant pink. If I had to choose one rose from the full collection right now to make an impact for colour there’s nothing quite like it. The most recent single flowered varieties from David Austin or Kew Gardens and tottering by gently both of which have been reviewed by myself in your find videos here on UA-cam or on my Instagram.

    I only have one David Austin in my small garden, and it's Poet's Wife. This is year 3 and it still flops over possibly due to the heaviness of the flower head. You mentioned this rose would need support. What would you use to support this plant. It seems the stems are not stout enough to hold the flower head up. I'm in Boise, Idaho.
