Working on setting up my FX3 and your videos and presentation style is very helpful. Also watched your audio setup videos which were great. Keep up the good work, subscribed!
Oooohm !! The best setup I have ever seen. Normally people make towers ... building upwards ... and I think that's not good for total balance. I will go your way !!! Thanks!
Nice work done Paul! I‘m most likely going to do a similar rig build like your first version, because I need the XLR‘s. Definitely going to add an handle extension to it though. Cheers!
Genius. As a new FX3 owner, I've been watching and loving all your videos. Especially the external monitor ones, I am going to try out that Portkeys! Question about the MKH416: I've been hearing it's best to use a shock mount to avoid handling noise from the camera (esp that creaky mic holder on the FX3 XLR handle...)... What's your experience been mounting and running the mic directly on the XLR handle as in this video? Any extra noise? My use case will be run and gun doc, mostly outside/uncontrolled environment (I have a Rycote deadcat), probably just as much handheld as tripod. Any first hand input welcome!
I’ve found mounting on the XLR handle to work okay but it really depends on what kind of shooting you do as to how much handling noise will be a problem. I’m currently looking at an alternative way to mount a shotgun mic so will post about that in the coming weeks once I’ve spent a bit of time trying it. Thanks for letting me know you found the videos helpful.
Thanks Paul. My mic and parts are still en route, but I got two potential shock mount solutions: I’m starting with Rode’s cold shoe shock mount, and will either mount it to the top of the XLR module itself via a small rig XLR handle part that adds a cold shoe mount on top, or by attaching some and adjustable rigging to the 15mm rod on the small rig half cage that will place my mic above the shutter button side of the camera… we shall see what happens! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!!
Hi Paul... I see I already asked you a question about your setup here, but I'll ask again: what XLR cable are you using here? It looks like a Neutrik connector, with two right angles. I haven't been able to find that via B&H, etc., Also, for the connector to your mic, did you have to rotate your mic 90 degrees to get the right angle to stick out to the side as it appears here? I bought a XLR with a single right-angle, but with the mic ports oriented on the left and right instead of top and bottom along the axis (I think this is the correct way), the XLR points straight down. I now have my mic mounted on the handle, so it would run into the handle in this configuration. Any input is welcome!
Hello, these set up videos are great as I've just got an FX3. I wanted to ask if using the rods to mount the monitor would work if using a shoulder rig set up? Thanks.
The great thing about using 15mm rods is that you have so many options for mounting kit so yes with a few short rods and the requires brackets you could likely put the monitor where it’s required.
How is the small rig trigger handle working for the FX3 ? Any problems? I have seen some complaints on Amazon but cannot find any real world opinions. Thanks!!
It works fine when I’ve tried it but I don’t use it very often because I don’t like having the cable sticking out of the camera. It’s not really hard using the buttons in the camera.
I’m totally stumped. My fx3 when running the atomos ninja v+. For some reason I cannot see my camera setting such as shutter, aperture, iso, focus points on the atomos screen. When I turn on hdmi info display, the atomos records my cameras screen. Can you PLEASE help?
Hi Craig. The only way to see camera settings on the Ninja is to use HDMI Info Display. If you send that to the Ninja it will also record it. Theres no way to show that info and not have it recorded, you have to switch off HDMI Info Display to record a clean signal.
@@PaulJoy THANK YOU! I really appreciate the help here. Also, I'm trying to update the firmware to the 2.0 but the Sony website is giving me this message, "Distribution will be suspended until we can inform you of modified version. (August 24, 2022)" is there something I'm missing here? THANKS AGAIN!
Hi there. I’ll be doing a few videos with stills soon but I can tell you that the stills are really nice. I shoot real estate photos sometimes and have used the fx3. The 12mp images look great and are plenty big enough for that use.
Great videos I’ve just discovered you this morning and I feel that we’ve got similar objectives in handling. I got my FX3 last Monday and a Shinobi . Monitor . Unfortunately yesterday I ordered the Tilta half Cage 😳😂🙆🏻, but I am sold on your rigging idea for the monitor . No I can’t put any rods on the tilter half cage, but I’m going to be using a lot of handheld and I wanna use my side strap but I will be looking for a quick change to my gimbal the RSC-2 and that’s quicker than the Small rig . I wanted to rack your brain with that idea and ask you if you have a solution. Maybe I’ve missed something. I think you’re absolutely right with the hand room on the left side, and the hype about the external handles I just can’t understand. I know this is long😂🤔 so the last question in summer I’m thinking of using the Tilta: Mirage Matt box , how do you think that would work or in fact any Matt box with your rig?. Do you even use one? Cheers ,
Welcome to the channel, congrats on the new camera. I haven't seen the Tilta half cage so I'm not sure what mounting options that has. I know Tilta make top handles with 15mm rod mounting points, I guess it depends if you plan on using the FX3's handle. I'm hoping to review the Mirage matte box with VND in the new year, it certainly looks like a nice solution. I've had matte boxes in the past and they end up staying at home unless I need to make my camera look bigger to impress a client! I often find they just get in my way with lens swaps etc.
Great video, Paul! Looking forward to that video on the FX3 autofocus.
Thanks Gerald. The AF video is coming along nicely, I can't wait to share it :)

Great stuff, glad they were useful.

Yes it works well, especially with the Ninja V as it puts the battery directly over the lens which again keeps the weight centred.
Nice work done Paul! I‘m most likely going to do a similar rig build like your first version, because I need the XLR‘s. Definitely going to add an handle extension to it though. Cheers!
Yeah the handle extension is great. Have fun.

@@craigwatsonphoto Thanks for letting me know, I guess they are fixing the issue some people have been reporting with the camera rebooting.

Is fx3 has 3.5 mm input without the XLR?
Yes it does

i love this monitor mounting, i think it's the better for the fx3 with the handle, but i can't find it in italy ahahah
Yes it only really makes sense if using the audio handle otherwise there’s plenty of ways to mount a monitor using a cage.
