Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лип 2024
- A surprise find on Gumtree turned into a very inexpensive classic kit from Airfix that although badly started was save able. I go through this rare kits parts and instructions and talk about how I fixed the previous bad build and what my plans are to upgrade and improve the kit.

I have "resurrected" several "previously owned" kits and I find it a lot of fun. If I could build kits like you do it would be even better. I enjoy your builds, but I have to say I sometimes have difficulty converting your excellent advice into even close approximations of what you create. If I turn down the lights and squint really hard...maybe, but in the full light of day, nope. This Airfix build is absolutely amazing, well done Sir, well done indeed.
Thank you very kindly Brian… it has been a joy to rescue and a delight to improve upon.
i Just bought the first version of this model kit in a perfect condition. Its very beautiful. Grettins from Argentina
An early White Box would be the best one to have
Ah that old brown plastic. Brings back memories :)
it is so nice to work with... pity Airfix had to go with the curry flavoured styrene now.
We love you grandpa ❤️
oh thanks Mehmet... nice to be loved :)
Cheers Harry. Good to see and hear you getting excited for the rescue and build of this old lady. Lots of great modelling tips and tricks are on the way I see. 😊
Thanks Angus... yes lots of new stuff to come👍
Very nice too display this beauty next too the Revell Batavia and Wasa. I might go and built these kits too. I will watch your videos for instruction.
I also have a whole series of videos on the Revell Bounty you may be interested in.

Great stuff! Another fab addition to the Harry fleet.
Indeed it is Rik... I think I pretty much have every Airfix and Heller 1960-70 sailing ship I need in large scale now. Just need to start building them :)
looking forward to this build I did enjoy my build of this very kit
Good to hear! Enjoyment is the name of the game.
Wonderful project. Started working on a couple of early sailing ships, I 've had for years. You work has inspired me and I'm following this series for ideas. Love it!!!!!!!
Good to hear I have inspired you Gary.
Thanks Harry just what I needed to put me to sleep.
From what I did see and interesting kit rescue.
Sweet dreams mister Cricket
Welcome back uncle Harry
Good to be back...
Harry , it's easy to see how much you like these old kits . That's one of the best parts of the video . It kind of takes you back , doesn't it ? Good job on the rehabilitation . Cheers
It’s old like me, we are kindred spirits
Awesome Harry. But better you then me.🤣 hard enough just building one fresh out of the box. looking forward to you bringing that to life.
Thanks mate... I always respond better to a challenge. Should be a fun ride.
Nice kits, those old Airfix sailing ships, and their St. Louis is the best one out there in plastic. I have two of them here, waiting to be built someday.
I love these old Airfix sailing ships and have quite a few of them. Lucky you having two St Louis kits George. You could make her sister ship Couronne.
@@HarryHoudiniModels - Ah, yes! I recall that Heller did La Couronne in a smaller scale at one time.
They did a 1:200 Saint Louis so no doubt reboxed it as the Couronne to sell more kits!
Lovely clean narration very informative and relaxing to watch got a Airfix "Mayflower" Planning to turn it into a cargo ship for my HO scale model railway dockyard area.... Best advice to a newbie kit builder just keep all parts in the box and leave them alone...... do not open box or mess with the kit pieces....
Thanks Ben… yes sadly many newbies buy kits way out of their league when they start the hobby, then get very disappointed. I blame all the idiots on UA-cam for over encouraging them…. ooops… I guess that’s me LOL
@@HarryHoudiniModels yeah even basic kits get expensive I am very nervous to do the same with mine being that I have very clear motives for my modelling. Any other videos like this you recommend?
Well I have a whole series on the St Louis if you follow my playlist up to the current 8th one. Plus if its sailing ships you like then I did a series on the Revel Bounty. There are lots of ship videos to watch on my channel.
Good ttiming! Im having waffles for breakfast right now!
Hope you enjoy them :)
It cleaned up good, Harry, nice job. Going to enjoy watching this build and the out come. Do you plan to show molding process?
That's the plan! Have already shot a lot of the next video where I show the wood veneer deck planking, casting the missing parts and some wood effects with Lifecolor Liquid Pigments
You cant imagine how mjch I do love your kit. Me Im already with the Airfix 1:144 Vasa from ( 1975) mine is 1987....l do study spanish vessel from XV centruy to XVII first half...I paint them in oil paint; as well I do study the Spainsh Old Tercios( many of them into ships...as the first marines in the planet ..1537)..Well id love to get yours..and even six of them...I do love the fore castle it has!! I wish you the best !!! Hope you,ll make a Piece of Art!!!. Thanks cause your video !!!👌🐏🐏🦅🦅🦅 Crom Alcalá de Henares, Madrid , Spain 🌱🌳💚🍀
Thank you Carlos. The Airfix Wasa is a beautiful kit and would be a joy to paint.
Excellent video. I shall follow this project closely. I have this kit, also a 'rescue pup' but it is I think the 1973 issue (according to the box) and is flash free. The original builder used UHU plastic adhesive (the tube was still in the box) and likewise glued parts mostly separated cleanly with a little gentle persuasion.
The wine and cheese lounger was, I think, a frame for repelling boarders.
The similarities to the Airfix Wasa are obvious. They produced what turned out to be a reasonably accurate Wasa, a great achievement considering the finer points about the ship were not then known. The lantern turned out to be incorrect, or doesn't feature on the restored vessel in Stockholm, as were some of the decorations on the stern, but all credit to Airfix back then for producing a wonderful range of highly detailed sailing ship kits. I wish they would produce more of them again, but I understand there is probably a very limited market for them.
Repelling Boarders you say... to stop them eating their wine and cheese, right?
@@HarryHoudiniModels When the ship went into action that frame was covered in a net and was indeed to repel boarders.
Ahhh good to know... plus the wine and cheese would be safe.
Hi Harry, I remember these kits , flashing was just part of the build , lol we have it to easy these days , don't mind spending time getting parts looking great ! Red wine and cheese lol, These days my french heritage as sercome to beer and pies 😂😂😂😂😂looking forward to the build , very interested in those planks 👍👍👍
oi la lah... le frothy ale avec bouef patisserie!
Mate that was goodera french 😂😂😂😂
mais oui je suis articulé
Lol now your showing off 😂😂😂😂where did you learn your french , me ,can read it but that's about it , pretty poor effort on my behalf🤔
I owe it all to Bugs Bunny Cartoons and Pepé Le Pew
Head of model ship salvaging - Harry Houdini.
You got it Max...
The large deck grate look like it could be an anti-boarding net like the one that trapped all those souls on the Mary Rose, just a thoughtful 🤔
Thanks Abi... That does seem to be the general consensus. I still think it makes a great sunshade while they eat their wine and cheese.
@@HarryHoudiniModels 😂😂😂
The grating which goes over the waist of the ship is called a "spar deck". It's a deck made out out of spars, and its function was to protect the gun crews from enemy boarding parties. This feature disappeared by the mid-17th century.
Yep… know that now…
Hi Harry, we are both members of the same modelling group on Facebook so you might remember my build of Revell's 1965 kit of Golden Hind. Like you I did the deck planking with individual planks. and many modifications including cloth sails instead of vacformed ones. It would be interesting following your build in its various stages. She reminds me of similar 3rd rater named La Couronne. i look forward to seeing your excellent work. Perhaps as a future project consider Heller's 1/75 La Reale De France.
You may be interested in my Revell Bounty build then. I scratched a lot of it to make it more accurate and made cloth sails as well. Did a ton of rigging on it too. Link on the end of the St Louis video.
@@HarryHoudiniModels I've seen that build and it looks great.
question where can I find the deck planking and does it come in separate sheets

I think I made my Saint Louis in 1994, I still have it displayed on top of my bookshelf, and I still have some things that bother me (like the ochre color on the deck). I got me my first airbrush about a month ago and I was considering in painting it again. I think it was the first edition and the moulding was very good, yet I had to make some adjustments.
I’ve since made a lot of scratch changes and added a wood veneer deck, plus painted the hull to match the box art. Overall the St Louis a good kit for its age and with some patience can become a great model.
It looks like it's made of chocolate! 😀
It is.. and it was delicious!
I’ve got the Lindberg version of this in my stack.
I am sorry to hear that... but with some patience you might make a go of it. Just joking. Your kit is a rebox of the old 1967 Pyro kit, which wasn’t bad for the day. 1:160 scale, so not as big as my Airfix 1:144, but at least larger than the Heller 1:200 Saint Louis.
@@HarryHoudiniModels It’ll suffice. I’d like to ask some of the experts on 17th century Dutch shipbuilding if they think it’s reasonably correct with the lay of the wales and overall lines. Interesting period!
Yes that is a major difference with the moulding on the Pyro/Lindberg kit. If you look at the well known line drawing of the St Louis, and as you say, general Dutch designs of the period, then the Airfix and Heller kits look more accurate. In my opinion.
Great video Harry ! Love your clamps. Where did you get them ? I bought the blue ones ( they were crap) and the metal ones are too strong for styrene. Hope you have a great weekend, Tony
They are great clamps. I picked mine up from BNA in Melbourne Australia, but I have seen them online overseas. I think they are just called a mini clamps.
@@HarryHoudiniModels Thanks, will look around ! Tony
These are the ones I bought. Made by U-Star

It will soon be looking 'Ship Shape'.
...and Bristol Fashion!
Hoy mates, I have the Heller Royal Louis. Are these two models the same? Where can we get the CAD scale blocks and guns for this scale? Thank you.
The Heller 1:200 Royal Louis is a large late 18th century 100 gun Ship of the line, as I reviewed in my “Fake Ships” video, although the Royal Louis is not fake, however it is not the same as the early 17th century Airfix 1:144 St Louis 70 gun Galleon. Very different shape and size ships from different eras.
From memory the Cannon stl file was from here:

@@HarryHoudiniModels Thank you again Sir. I'm new to your channel. New Subscriber.
In my day you were aloud to look in the box to see what the model was like if it was not tapped shut and l remember the first time l looked in one of these l found it to hard so lve never built one to this day and l believe the person you bought this from started it found it to hard never finished it and sold it to you
Have a look at my latest St Louis video where I have completely saved this kit.
Sounds like Scalemates has you covered, but if you need help localizing or unlocalizing Japanese instructions or text into English, I can help.
Thanks Captain... I will keep you in mind if I need help
