  • The badly glued parts of Louis previous builder were all pulled apart and then cleaned up. I show how to repair any breakages and get the kit ready for paint. Then we explore wood effects with Lifecolor Liquid Pigments and reveal the colour scheme I plan to use. Finally I show how to create a mould for a missing part and easily cast a replacement.

    Great tips on doing repair and restoration work, Harry. Love the corn cob holder scribing tool, pure genius! I've been wanting to try Lifecolor paints. I ordered some yesterday, so we'll see how I get along with them. Thanks for another excellent and informative video!

      Thanks Ken... Lifecolor are brilliant to hairy brush, I use them straight from the bottle. 2 light coats and it levels down almost as good as airbrushing. The washes I showed using their Liquid Pigments are unique and my ‘go to’ for weathering and wood effects now. Just don’t get the paint too hot, it turns to snot if overheated, as I accidentally did by mounting my paint racks on a hot north side wall (Southern Hemisphere remember).

    Hi Harry all coming together nicely and looking pucker. A serious question tho Harry, on the 3 fore decks how, the hell, would a crew member ever get on them. There must be ladders, some where, on the outside it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  3 роки тому

      Yes I noticed that as well. Checking plans I have for the Louis sister ship The Couronne, there should be more to the quarter deck going forward on each side of the bulwarks. With a hole in the middle having ladders down to the gun deck. I will mock one up with card to find out if it can be seen through the wine and cheese awning. If possible I can scratch the deck sides from card and wood veneer plank it. Then make some ladders down to the gun deck. This will be in my next video.

    Really great Harry, enjoyed the tips. I do plan on using them. Is Life Color, your go to paint. What determines what brand of paint you use? Thanks Harry.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  3 роки тому

      I really like Lifecolor for hairy brush work. Great for camouflage patterns and any fiddly detail. Self levels, lays down smooth, and almost has the sheen of airbrushing after two thin coats. I have fooled other modellers thinking I airbrushed camo themes on armour and aircraft with it. The Lifecolor Liquid Pigments are now my go to washes and weathering paints. The fact that they remove without damaging the paint layer beneath is one of the best points about them. Plus the great wood effects I have managed to achieve.
      However some of my Lifecolor paints either cooked in the Aussie heat or got contaminated by non stainless steel balls as shakers. Long story, all my mistake, but made most of my stock useless in the airbrush. I switched to Hataka for airbrushing and really like their colour range and the way the paint lays down. For priming it’s Stynylrez in all their various colours. I am pretty much 99% water based acrylic now with my model painting. Which I need for my health as I suffer from respiratory problems due to bronchitis a child. The only exception is Chrome for my motor vehicles. I have been using AK Extreme Metal, an enamel. But now have some Green Stuff World acrylic chrome on order. Looks great in their UA-cam videos. Other metals like brass and copper I use Dark Star acrylics. Simply brilliant water based metallic paints I use for shiny ship parts.

    Hi Harry. Enjoying your videos on the St Louis. Trying to find the exact Stynylrez color you are using for the vase coat. Is it neutral or pale mustard. 😂
    I signed up to support you on monthlyutube and my credit
    card was immediately hacked so I had to cancel. May try the Thanks route again with a bigger amount.
    Also I love the 1/350 sailing ships you are doing. I’m working on USCGC Eagle and want to do scale railing. It appears 1/350 railing a is too big. Any suggestions for the right size PE railing specifically.
    Thanks again for all you are doing. John r.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  Рік тому

      Hi John. My primer is Stynylrez pale mustard, which is always a good match for 17th Century yellow trim, and a nice base colour to add wood effects. If your Eagle is the 1:350 Aoshima rebox of the IMAI kit then 1/350 railing is correct. Try using US 3 bar and cut the feet off the posts, effectively putting a bar on the deck.
