Airfix St Louis Part 2 Wood Veneer Deck Planks
Вставка

- Continuing on with the St Louis build I show in detail how to use the Artwox Wood Veneer Deck Planks. They go on very easily, but you do need to do some preparation and planning. I share a few tips and tricks to help you get a result hopefully as good as mine.
The planks I used are by Artwox under the strange name of “Planking Spread Sticker Wood Sheet”.

As I get older I never lose the love of learning new modeling skills. Now that being said I'm NOT a ship builder so I'm living my love of build through your artistry. So thanks for that. I do the same thing with a guy in Austria. But we message each other off Facebook. I'd support him also but he won't start a channel on you tube. Says they suck. 🤣🤣 cats mind of their own. 🤣 nice hid and go seek.
You can vicariously enjoy the love of ship building through me any time Clayton. As you might tell, I love them. Bask says hi.
A Silk Purse from a Sows Ear an excellent demonstration
Thanks Michael
Turned out great! Innovative update to a standard plastic model.
Thanks Guido!... I do it for my battleships but this is a first for a sailing ship.
Another great tutorial Harry. Thanks for making me aware of those planking kits. A must-have.
Thanks Rik. Yes, I think this is a very useful product with great results and actually not that hard to apply.
What a transformation. Will have to see if Artwox planking is available here in the U.K. As always clear and concise explanations. Good to see Bask make an appearance, albeit very briefly.
Bask is so hard to film... she takes photos ok and her Facebook page is full of them. But getting her on video is a challenge. Glad you enjoyed the video Nick.
Harry, you're inspiring me to start my Airfix Discovery model.
Lovely… go for it Andrew
The models make you click, Harry grabs your attention and you stay for the cat. Beautiful.
I owe all my fame and fortune to that Cat
Yet another master class H,
Thanks Frederick.
another planking good build Harry
I’ve had a lot of bathroom practice....
The wood decks look really great. Thank you for showing.
My pleasure! I always wanted to try them on a sailing ship model.
So clean is work grandpa 👏👏
I try.. thanks
It's looking lovely so far. Good job mate.
Thank you! Cheers Basil!
Loved the video. Have seen the planking sheets, never used them. Thanks for sharing Harry, all your videos great.
Glad you like them! I have used the wood veneer decks on my battleships, mainly because they also mask all the greebles. So saves me all that fiddly detail painting. Now I am hooked on them for sailing ships as well.
hi harry another superb video. cheers tom.
Glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic I'll bet its quiet therapeutic like us armour builders with individual track links Thank you for showing us how you planked the decks looking forward to the next update
Thanks Greg. The process is a little like track links, but each plank is different and goes in a different location depending where you want the plank join over a bulkhead... so it’s more like collage.
I'm thinking about getting some of the planking either for HMS Prince or the Royal Sovereign I may do that as a winter build project
It certainly would lift the lack of detail in the Airfix Royal Sovereign decks. I have both kits and I think the Prince is by far the better of the two.
i like your videos
Thanks Noel
Really beautiful, that's a labour of love! Hope to see more of this ship soon.
More to come! Hope to have part 3 up this weekend Agustin
Awesome video. Technique videos are informative to even the most experienced model builders. I've been actively building sailing ship models for years and never even heard of this product , so thanks a million! This suddenly and easily solved many problems. Thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful! I only discovered this a few months back as well.
Awesome work as always mate, love that planking effect👍😊😉
Thank you! Cheers Dave
Thanks H, I'm inspired to give a sailing boat a try. Cheers buddy
Go for it!
Hi Harry, great product, will diffently give it a go! 😊😊😊😊😊
Make sure first you have a ship to put it on ;)
Never seen these planks before, thanks for the heads up
New to me as well Jim... been dying to try them out.
Beautiful work! Greetings from Sweden :-D
Thanks. Waves from down under.
@@HarryHoudiniModels Thank you :-D
Sweet. That planking (double check the spelling) really lifts the finish. Could you also plank the sides of the ship with those veneer strips? or would it become a little difficult?. Cheers
I am considering doing that... watch this space!
I have tried to cut my own from a self adhesive sheet of veneer but very difficult to be consistent. I hope someone imports these into the UK. Thank you for bringing these strangely named planks to our attention and your video of how to get the best from them.
Thanks John. I had been searching for one of those blank wood veneer sheets to fix the awful over scale and exaggerated planks on my Revell Batavia when by luck I came across these veneer planks already scored and stained. Been dying to try them out. Glad I bought them and have grabbed some more sheets in other plank widths. I think you would get 2 to 3 ships out of a sheet so they are great value costing only 2 shekels a sheet here.
@@HarryHoudiniModels I have a 1/96 HMS Victorious (Majestic class) that will need decks. Does the pack include any wider planking to joggle?
These plank strips come in sizes from 1mm wide to about 3mm wide. A 1:100 scale 10 inch wide plank is about 2.5mm wide.
@@HarryHoudiniModels I am unable to find suitable planks for my 1/96 Revel Cutty Sark! I don't want to buy a custom ready-made deck. The product shown in this video looks beautiful. Might you be able to direct me as to where to find them? Just joined your channel and love your videos! Will be studying the rigging vids religiously!
Thanks Chad… at your scale you need 2.0-2.6mm wide planks. My source in Melbourne is sold out of that size and only has the 1mm width left. The product has a funny name, so use that to search eBay and online hobby stores near you.

Hi Harry, may I ask how any kits have you on the go, started dry fitted, and not fully completed. I understand how this happens to builders and I do have too many of my own, recently a guy mentioned a number, 40 kits. Kind Regards Dave Porter UK
Hi Dave.. I have kits I’ve used for videos and started to show the fit, but they go back in the box and into the stash. I have 3 kits out for working on at any time. Usually a ship or boat, an aircraft and some armour. Then there is the Wood ship builds, currently the Constructo Bounty. My Scalemates list says I have 15 WIP... so there must be about a dozen in my started cupboard. Those kits will be next in line to fill a space for the three I have out for building. But every now and then something fun like the Louis appears, then that kit gets priority while I am excited and motivated to build it.
Kook 100% better Harry !!
I do try to cook my curries better... oh maybe it’s a typo “look” yes those wood veneer decks just make any ship model pop!
Love your videos! Are these veneer planks stainable?
Yes they are! A little of the Lifecolor Liquid Pigments I used on the other two deck grates bled into the wood veneer. But the effect looks great. I also have a video on staining wood veneer decks, albeit for a 1:350 cruiser, but the principles are the same. ua-cam.com/video/2wkwjipkHjI/v-deo.html
Why did you use white glue if the planks have sticky side anyways? And is white glue a PVA glue?
The PVA white wood glue allows the planks to be slide into an exact position. The sticky side on the planks gives little movement once they are placed on the plastic. So if you make a mistake it is hard to fix. By adding watered down wood glue you get a little more movement to help align the planks better and correct mistakes. It also helps better adhere the planks to the plastic once dry. PVA stands for Polyvinyl acetate. It glues to plastic and cellulose in wood, so perfect for scale modelling. Even holds some PE parts in place better than CA glue.
Do they make a decking kit for 1/96 scale? I would love to use that product on my Revell USS Constitution!
They make plank widths from 1mm up to 3mm wide. So a 10 inch wide plank in 1/96 scale is about 2.6mm. Just check your model for plank width.
@@HarryHoudiniModels Thanks for the knowledge! I love watching your videos and munching on waffles!🙃
Those Waffles are delicious
don't know what I did wrong , but i got nothing from BNA , would love to get some too . you wouldn't have a link would you mate
They have a strange name, not what you would expect “Planking Spread Sticker Wood Sheet”. www.bnamodelworld.com/model-ships-boats-general-detailing-sets-artwox-aw50043
@@HarryHoudiniModels good on you mate , cheers .
Don’t forget to work out your scale plank width. The typical 10 inch wide deck plank is about 2.5mm wide at 1:100, 1.7mm at 1:150 and 1.2mm wide at 1:200
Hi, The planking is beautifully done, it really worth the effort. I really like your video but I think that the fast forward parts are a bit too fast to see anything, or perhaps I'm just tired...
The fast forward section is identical to the method I showed just before.. it’s just a repeat of the method until that area is planked. I thought it would be too boring for you to watch another 5 mins of planks going down. Like waiting for paint to dry.
