Unmarked city utilities is the main reason why hydro excavation has become so common that you see the trucks everywhere now.
Can’t damage the utility if all you’re doing is vacuuming out the dirt. (very simplistic explanation).
They never use an auger anymore to install new power line poles anymore.

🤔 A/C with the door open?!? Why not ? I drove my '94 convertible with the top down & a/c on all the time. As for the BWS, a backhoe operator found a 'live' water pipe while digging for a main. The pipe was not on any paper or electronic device. How it got there was, and always will be, unknown. But, was noted.
    👍 to be extra careful.

This video reminded me of a term of endearment my crew used to refer to me as. I was "Greg Asshole-built." I was an absolute stickler for accurate drawings or details in as-builts because some poor bastard is gonna come along after me, somewhere down the road. Just nice for the next guy or gal to not stand around wondering WTF did he do?

Hi Mike. Another fun video to watch!
Have you guys ever used dousing rods or witches sticks for locating underground water lines? We were putting an addition on our house and had a “well guy” come out to look at options for moving our well line. He pulled out his dousing rods and pretty much found the line spot on. He even helped map out our septic field. It was amazing how they worked. I have since used them at other peoples houses. I just took a metal coat hanger to make mine. Take care.

    • @CaptainKleeman
      @CaptainKleeman  2 роки тому

The first job I did out of high school was municipal construction, we ran a 6 inch pressure main on one of the oldest streets in this little town. After we were 2 weeks over on the bid time the city sent gas water and sewer crews and told us to dig everything up and they would fix it🤦‍♂️. We dug straight through 15 services. Our savings grace was overhead power and cable🤣. It was a nightmare!

  • @ronaldheit196
    @ronaldheit196 3 роки тому +3

Boy, Y'all would have loved excavation work in my little farm town city just north of Flint Michigan.
They had lines and pipes going every which way going back to when they first started running sewer and water lines as well as buried trolly and narrow gauge lumber railroad tracks from the early 20th century. When the finally ran sewer line to our street which was the last south street towards Flint they found two gas lines they thought were dead actually active.
Luckily they were cautious enough to have been digging a cross trench with shovels and only popped an extremely small hole in one and we're able to find the turn off valve because one of the old to timer retired city works guy lived on my street and he showed them where it was.
Fun time when they freaked out and went knocking on doors to evaluate our street and the ones north and south of us.
Firetrucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles from two surrounding toelwns showed up.
    Us kids had a blast.
    My Mom was pissed off.
She'd just put some cherry pies (we had 7 cherry trees) in the oven and refused to leave so two fireman carried here out screaming.
After that the city finally went into overdrive finding all the old lines and pipes.
Cheaper than what the 3 district emergency response cost them.
Got the city council recalled for refusing to fund it for decades even tho the county had told them to.
Again, us kids had a blast.
All the Mom's ticked off becauseno baking while they did the digging due to more known lost active gas lines.
It all had to be hand dug till found.
    Another turned off the stove.

When I was in grade school, the church attached to the school started construction of a much larger sanctuary in the next city block. I'm not sure exactly what was and wasn't marked (I wasn't yet nine), but the excavator that was beginning the clearing hit a phone trunk line. Several pairs of 600VDC lines blew a hole in the shovel/bucket/whatever it was big enough to put a softball through. They brought a section of the cable in and passed it around the school for show-and-tell. I would not want to have been the one to have to patch that trunk line back together...

11kV found in a 3 inch pipe with am Oxy Acetylene torch back in the 1980s it was a feed to a substation that the electric board in Padiham Lancashire UK did know was there. Our guy lost most of his facial hair and head hair + plus bruised bum and it ruined the head of the gas axe torch, it was 5pm and my boss gave him the rest of the day off.
Our factory had 5 11kV substations inside the factory floor and a very large switch room in the street.
Sorry I am a bit late, it might make someone laugh.
The most danger I have had was soldering live 240V gas appliance test rigs since they did not want to shutdown production.

While watching this video I was getting crazy angry at people who bury utilities and don't set some tape above. It was SO satisfying to see you do it. I think it should be mandatory for any type of buried utility line: it don't cost much and it makes things SO much easier for others in the future... Jumping on to Chelsea's channel now !

Cap’n that excavator dowsing rod needs calibrated! Or, perhaps it doesn’t.... iffen the waterline was abandoned... perhaps it knows more than the engineers!
I heard about a guy who lived in Canada who had trouble with his water level freezing in the winter. It was a garden hose with clear tubing screwed to the ends.
Being a backwoods, DIY kind of guy he brought it into the shop. There he thawed it, emptied the water and filled it with Vodka. It worked great.
The bonus was... after the spring thaw he could pour a shot of Vodka into his drink at lunchtime to give him a boost. When he went back to the shop, he topped it off with more Vodka and never suffered another sober day on the job... no matter what the weather was!
Coincidentally, I received a Media Mod for my GP8 yesterday. Thanks for the waterproofing heads up.
Now, if you’ll pardon me I have a new channel to subscribe to and support!

@@CaptainKleeman this regions water mains service over a million people, the size is for the water flow needed.
Just gives a reference to how large a community is, the bigger diameter the water main, the larger the population being serviced.
