Cap’n I once spent a whole evening trying to get 26 stories high on a Jenga tower. Since the wife and kids were gone… I had the perfect opportunity to study it and try over and over again to my hearts content.
After numerous attempts and failures. I finally got 25 & 2/3 stories finished… just one block left. I knew exactly which block to remove to fill the slot.
As I stepped back to move around the table to get into position… my daughter’s beloved cat decided to lay down right where I was stepping. So engrossed in my study… so confident in my ability to complete the move… I failed to see that her tail was right under my heel.
However, the cat was not as invested in Jenga as I was… just as I was stepping, she jumped and cried out like she’d been hit with a club.
And, just like that two hours of learning, concentrating, trying over and over again… turned into a pile of wooden rubble.
You see… all along, I thought the obstacle to completing my 26 story tower was just understanding how to be steady in my moves and getting the geometry perfect. When in fact it turned out to be that I forgot to let the cat outside!
Once I figured out how that worked I built my dream tower in just a few moments!
Congrats on figuring out how to build your tower… Feels great. Doesn’t it???

Capt'n, the look you had when the steering problem was solved made me smile! I think you could have hugged the world! Well done!
Patching the tire reminded me of something that happened to me when I was on Temporary Duty (TDY) to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in 1982 when I was in the USAF. One day in the radar system shelter (rubber ducky as we called it) I heard an air leak in the air inflated side wall. When I found the leak, it was a slit someone had "patched" it by stuffing a rag in the slit. Not good or right. Somehow us computer repairman were tasked with repairing these leaks. I had plenty of experience as a farm kid patching bike tubes so no problem. I had the side wall deflated for my next shift and patched the sidewall properly. No more leak! Just part of the job of a computer repairman!

For rear end weight my dad used two 55 gallon drums filled with concrete. He had the drums fastened together and mounted to the three point hitch. Then he took the weight off the three point hitch with some heavy chains. The tractor was a Massy Ferguson front end loader. We used that tractor for everything on our dairy farm and it had great traction.

Tip for tire patches cut a disk out as big 8 x bigger than the hole of an aluminum can but keep the curve modify the curve to the tire cement glue it over the hole then cement your patch over it. Then clamp a curved piece of wood to the tire over it over night. This will keep the patch from pushing out the hole over time. I did this to my truck over 5 years ago and it’s still holding.

Adding the 304 makes a huge amount of sense for you, especially with the way you are able to do it, nice work there. Lots of things fixed in the episode, nicely done. I would think that after removing the thumb and bucket from the backhoe, I would look at adding a plate in place of the bucket that you could use to either pull or push some material around would be handy but more importantly be there to be able to pull or push the machine around when things get messy or things gone slightly wrong and the 2wd isn't enough to get you back to moving. Anyways, enjoyed the video, have a good one!! 👍

Shout out to the individual who sent you the manual for the pump! Amazing how simple the steering valve is with so many different pieces. Having that one piece in the right position made all the difference. I was hoping you were going to swap sides with the tires to ensure the directional tires were properly oriented.
As for the 304, that was quite the investment. It would be nice if you could invest in the 120 when DP pulls the trigger on the new Case, but I'm pretty sure that will be way outside your budget.
I do recommend that when you do replace the tires on the 555, those wheels are desperately in need of some rust proofing! When you broke the bead and pushed the tire down, LOTS OF RUST! Vice grips for mounting the tire always came in handy when the rim clamps weren't available! That leaf spring came in handy for the dismounting and mounting of the tire!

Excellent! Glad you stuck with it on the hydrostatic steering unit and solved the problem. It was probably good you took it completely apart anyway to clean up everything and replace any seals/o-rings in that part of the assembly. I learned something about these type steering units. Also, glad to see you fixed the leaky tire, although my OCD would have forced me to clean up the inside of the rim and paint it to keep it from rusting through later. The extra width on tire spacing is a good idea as well. Look forward to your videos - keep up the good work.

Well done on getting the power steering behaving, very well done.
For the wheel width thing I was surprised the 555 does not have the standard type of rims where the centre section is separate from the rim itself. On the three tractors I have owned you could flip the centre section or flip the rims or both to give you all sorts of track width adjustments.
Wheel weight wise the cheaper option is of course to fill the tyres with fluid. Water if you don't care about rusting the rims through (or blowing the tyres in freezing weather, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol antifreeze if you want to reduce the rust and stop the freezing issue. Ethylene glycol works better but is pretty toxic.
To fluid ballast the tyres rotate the wheel so the valve stem is at the top then using the appropriate adaptor fill to the valve stem height, releasing the air pressure multiple times as you go. When full refit the schrader valve and inflate with air to your desired pressure. Bonus is it's easy to find a leak if you get a puncture :-P

You fixed it! Great job Mike! One possible option for tire weight is to load the tires. I have beet juice in my tractor tires and it really keeps the back end planted. The 555 has much larger tires than mine, but I gained 420 pounds per side with liquid ballast. Wheel weights are potentially more effective than loading tires for taking load off the front axle if that's a concern for you.
