I have the a300 Ultima, Out of the box, it stove piped like every other round. I got it home and took it apart, and found the innards were stuffed with packing grease. It's a miracle it cycled at all. I stripped all the grease, lightly applied some gun oil, and it's been perfect ever since. Other people have similar stories. So, clean it out of the box and you won't have any problems, it's a great gun.
Not only is it a good idea to clean every gun before use for function purposes, it can also be a matter of safety when it comes to higher pressures with rifles. I've heard horror stories of blow ups due to the excessive pressure created by a high velocity rifle round squeezing through a barrel *and* grease/oil
Hello everybody! Of course a400! This is the best semi-automatic machine in the world for many years! Despite the great quality of Benelli! I recommend paying your attention to all the derived models from the A 400! For example, On 1301 comp! Cheaper than ordinary A400! And it has a number of advantages like a high bar, enlarged controls (for working with gloves), two front sights (for bullet shooting). And much more! I have owned the card for 10 years! Completely satisfied! Beretta gives a guarantee for this gun- 10,000 shots without cleaning! This indicates the high quality and strength of the structure! In my opinion, this is the best shotgun! Good luck to everyone!
Sounds like you need to get one too and catch up grandpa!! That’s an amazing gift that he’ll have his whole life. I miss my grandpa every day. Glad you are getting to make memories with him.
Sat in Scotland cleaning my A300 Outlander, loved watching this as much as I'll love the goose season starting in September! I've got so much to learn about shotguns (and wildfowl, ammo and everything else this sport brings) cheers for the video
I still have my Beretta 391 Urika 20g. One firearm that I won’t get rid of. Might have to look into the A400. I agree on the cleaning of the 391 Urika.
I've been using my Beretta Silver Hawk Featherlight SxS 12 gauge 26" IC/mod over 50 years for pheasant, quail, Hungarian partridge etc. Jump shooting ducks off farm ponds or over decoys too. Never really needed anything else for my style of hunting untill the steel shot requirements came along. I followed Remington's advice that said it was OK to use steel shot in their older pumps and semi autos (Wingmaster 870, 11-48, 1100) as long as choke was no tighter than modified and nothing larger than #2 shot, so I had several of those guns just for ducks and geese and anything I didn't have to walk for and could sit down to shoot, but finally got a 11-87 Premier with choke tubes just so I didn't have to worry that I might be damaging one of my old Remingtons. None of those were fancy in design or appearance in comparison to today's guns but I didn't have to mortgage my farm to buy any of them and never had any problems with any of them. Happy hunting boys and girls! 😊
You're right, the a400 is quite expensive, I love Berettas though, and found several older models 390s, 303s like new on the internet for 1/3 the price of a new a400.
Love the review! I have an A300 ultima in bottomland and it’s been 1000% reliable. I cleaned it when I first got it and haven’t cleaned it since in 2 duck seasons and 2 dove seasons. Ran a patch down the barrel every so often but that’s been it, haven’t taken the gun down at all. My friends shoot Brownings and they are always fiddling with their guns in the blind or dove field while my Beretta just keeps on chugging along.
@@osprey2499 May I ask what is going on? I can say they gas system is more sensitive if you fire REALLY dirty shells. But I would venture to say if you have cycling issues pull the bolt carrier out and clean it and the area the BCG drops back into the stocks. Use CLP over gun oil.
Excellent informative video. I just got (Feb 2023) an A300 Ultima in 12 ga, haven't shot it yet but am very impressed. I wanted to get a Beretta semi-auto for its quality of manufacture and reliability. Already have a CZ SxS and an 870 Remington Wingmaster, both in 12 ga. For me, the top requirements are reliability, and how it fits me. I could easily afford the A400, but I could buy two new A300's for the price of one new A400. The added cost for the A400 just isn't worth it to me, as an occasional hunter and shooter. And I could get two Turkish semi-autos for one A300, but they are not worth the money, IMO. I am very happy with my A300: it fits me well, it's a Beretta, and it's made in USA. Thank you for your excellent video on the A300 vs. A400.
So, Beretta's A300/400 series are the best available today. The A300 has 95% of the features of the A400 at less than 1/2 the price. Money being the issue, the A300 Ultima is my pick. Thanks!
I know America has a love and passion for duck hunting and that's awesome. Me personally i could care less. My passion is turkey hunting. I don't understand why Beretta refuses to create an A400 in a 24 inch barrel for turkey hunters. I have an A350 and its not perfect by a long ways. Great vid again DD
Every time I take new shooters out for clays, they vastly prefer my a400 to any of my doubles. For me the a400 is mostly a tool for birds, it lacks the soul of a nice double, but it’s a fantastic tool. Been debating an a300 ultima in 20g, although it’s not nearly as pretty as your wife’s a400 upland.
That was a nice comparison and review of these fine Beretta shotguns . I have the A400 XPLOR 20 gauge without kickoff and 26” barrel . Hands down the best handling smoothest cycling most reliable shotgun I’ve ever owned . I’m a Browning fan through and through, and I absolutely LOVE my Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen Lightning which also has a 26” barrel , but this Beretta A400 is just the cream of the crop ! They both shoulder and swing so naturally smooth and phenomenally well balanced but yeah the A400 … can you say Meow 😻 I went to the gun shop to look at a 686 O/U and somehow walked out with the A400 XPLOR lol 😆 I still may get the double barrel O/U someday
I don't own any Beretta's, nor am I considering one, but since your videos are so informative and well-done I had to give this a watch. Merry Christmas Desert Dog and thanks for the great content.
I have the A400 Upland in 20 gauge and I love it. I have tried the A300 but I found the A400 a nicer gun and the action was alot smoother. Both are top quality shotguns. I have always been a big Browning fan and was even considering a Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 but I fell in love with the Beretta as soon as I picked it up. It was worth the $1,800 price tag. You get what you pay for !!
Thank you for this video. I had a 3901, a very reliable gun. If I can afford it I’ll get an A400 but for now you’ve convinced me to get the A300 Ultima for now.
Wow, i will have to go down to American Shooting Center and see if they rent the A400....this brings back fond memories of when i used to take my uncle's 80's era Remington 1100 skeet shooting. I loved the feel and balance of it. If the 1100 felt like a Dream i cant wait to see what the A400 feels like.
Thanks for the informative video DD. Those are some beautiful firearms and you explained them well. The only shotgun I own is a 12 ga. Stevens 311 and it kicks like a mule. I would love to try one of these semi-auto 20 ga. works of art.
I was just hoping to get an A300 ultma in a camo pattern I own for black Friday. Sold out or my location didn't even have any to begin with. Was looking forward to trying out that shotgun...
I am looking at a A300 U Pstrol or a 1301 which, like you mentioned, are just different furniture and barrel lengths. Based your review I am leaning twords the A300 UP now, as you mentioned how reliable they are. In a home defense role, to me at least, that's priority number one. If I find a great deal or have extra cash then 1301, but for now looks like A300 UP for the win 😊
Awesome video love your content. Have you made a a400 upland review video? What would you pick your dedicated upland gun or your wives. Thanks looking for a semi auto 20 gauge. You talked me out of a benelli
Great review! How do you compare them to Browning autos? The one feature I like on the Browning shotguns is the cross bolt safety is at the back of the trigger guard
Very thorough review I have had experiences with almost all these guns you have mentioned and I’m just commenting as to second everything your saying. I’d have to say this though the Win. SX4 is very impressive. You should try it for a season. Very soft shooting and dead reliable.
Two of the guys I sit in duck blinds with own SX4's, and they both had quality issues. One of them kept having the charging handle fly off in the blind while he shoots! Visually inspecting the gun, I would say it's a downgrade from the SX3 (which I like).
Can you do another video on scopes I’m curious why you always seem to use Leupold over zeiss, Swarovski or Schmidt and bender. Also you seem to use tally rings can you elaborate more on your choices please ?
All they have to do is find a rubber compound that won’t dissolve when it comes in contact with mosquito spray. I’ve put 3 butt pads and 2 split stock rubber parts. Only weakness on any waterfowl gun. I have an A400 excel and an A400 Utica.
HI DD, I enjoy all of your videos. Question: Can you comment on safety placement on Beretta shotguns vs Browning shotguns? I think I prefer safety placement at the back of the trigger guard. Is it just a matter of getting use to it being placed on the front of the trigger guard for Beretta shotguns? Does any after market trigger company make a trigger module that will fit a Beretta A300 with the safety behind the trigger? Thanks. Displaced Californian, Kit Bruttig
so if the a 300 or a400 was the same price which would you buy? You can buy the Beretta A400 Xplor Action Shotgun Bronze and Walnut with a 26 barrel for 1100 good deal?
The A300 is a great gun. Just do yourself a favor and change the controls on it. Button is very small and in cold weather is hard to close the bolt . Briley makes a great set for them. Easy to do yourself.
The "A300 Outlander" with the small button was discontinued over a year ago. All newer "A300 Ultima's" have the oversized bolt release that can be used with snow gloves on.
Desert Dog, as you know, upland hunting is virtually nonexistent in S. Florida, but l like getting out to shoot trap. Occasionally, I do make it to a friend’s farm in S. Dakota, for pheasant. I’m looking for a semi-auto 20 bore, to compliment my Aguirre y Aranzabal 12 bore. I’m thinking a 26” barrel is enough, especially since I never hunt waterfowl. Mostly I get to shoot clays, but I don’t want something dedicated just for that. I intend to do more hunting, but my son flinches when he uses my AYA. What are your thoughts?
A 26" barrel is perfectly suited for all upland hunting (actually preferred), but a 28" barrel is a great length for a gun that will be used for hunting and clays. The 20-bore is definitely a great gun for a child to start with (I'm in my 50s and still prefer a 20-bore). A semi-auto gas gun is the cheap and easy solution; but not all children are capable of correctly working the controls under stress (which might induce a safety issue). Most kids start with a pump shotgun, which is safer for a child and easier to manipulate; but they kick like an O/U with game loads. My suggestion for the son, is to get a youth-model 20-gauge pump shotgun and install a "Falcon Strike" recoil pad. I did this for a buddy's 11-year old and it works perfect.
Can it shoot slugs effectively? My dad is convinced that it’s only a good bird gun? I’m a young man saving up for using it as a turkey/dove which different chokes and ammo of course. But if I did want to use it as a slug gun for deer hunting in Ohio will it fire effectively?
...considering a 26" barrel on the a-400...I've been shooting a 26" O/U with extended chokes but wanted to go up in length...the 26" should be equivalent to a 28" O/U as the semi's are a little longer over all than the O/U...primary use is for chukar hunting...any suggestions on another option...TIA...
Great video, thanks for all the info. A lot of which isn't provided on the Beretta website. I have the A350 and I am very satisfied with how it has compared to other guns my buddies use in the blind. Do you know if the A350 and A300 use the same Blink system in the A400? I am still unclear about that.
what's the difference between xplor and upland model besides the kick off system and appearance? Beretta claims that the upland kick off plus reducing 40% recoil and the xplor with kick off system reducing 60%. Why would your wife prefer the upland model and what make you prefer the xplor model?
@@Texze FYI, modern plastic trigger guards are more durable and impact resistant than anodized aluminum or cast pot-metal trigger guards. Thought you should be aware of that.
Hi Desert Dog, I just watched your video benelli vs beretta, now the beretta a400 is on my wish list I would love to hear your thoughts on benelli supernova 12ga. I use it mostly for snow and canada geese to shoot high in the sky with 3.5 inches federal flight control BBB, because I don't have money to buy decoys
Lol, I just spent all day yesterday trying to get the snows and specks to come to decoys, and all 100k of them refused to fly below 1000 ft. I hate clear days! The Super Nova is the best modern Pump shotgun in my opinion (even though they are ugly).
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 thanks for reply, I also prefer safety on supernova, it just makes sense, I don't understand people who prefer safety behind trigger What I don't like, is a lot of recoil and blast, often my ears ring after shooting box of 3.5s , what do you use for hearing protection while geese hunting? I know that it's often handy to hear where they are coming from By the way my name is Gregory, emailed you with questions before, when I lived in Saskatchewan, just moved to Alberta and got mature white trailed deer
Thanks . It’s easier to add a shim than to cut a stock . Have not been able to see in person either of my 28 gauge finalist . After watching your videos I’m leaning a400 xplor over the benelli ethos . Long term o/u old guy looking to lighten my load while uplanding with my Griff . Like your reviews ,keep up the good work.@@desertdogoutdoors1113
Anyone know the length of pull for the A300 20 gauge? Is it adjustable from the factory? I'm around 15" LOP and have been eyeing this shotgun for a while now but can't find a definite answer
It comes from the factory with just under 14.5" length of pull. Like most semi-autos, the A300 Ultima comes with a bag of shims to increase or decrease LOP. It also comes with a skeleton frame so you can remove the kick-off system and replace it with a regular recoil pad.
I was able to get over 15” LOP with the extra shims that come with the gun. DD is right. My 20g 300 ultima is the most reliable autoloader ive ever had. Not 1 single failure to eject or load and i can’t say that about any other gun i own. Even my A400’s have had a couple which I believe is normal from time to time depending upon ammo. I just picked up the 20g A400 Upland because well, just because it looks so nice! The 300 is an amazing value. But it does look like a Lodge cast iron skillet with plastic handles! I think it’s actually part of the charm of the 300, it’s just an awesome shooter that you don’t need to worry about getting beat up.
Friends don't let friends buy Turkish made shotguns. Seriously though, save a couple extra bucks and buy a used quality beretta or equivalent gun. Cry once buy once

My a300 ultima is great I’d suggest it. Just paying more for the 3.5 feature tbh. If you don’t shoot 3.5 shells the 400 isn’t necessary. Peace! ✌🏾
ONLY A400 3.5 IS THEIR EXTREMA MODEL, THE REST ARE ALL 3 INCH, ALSO THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE IN DESIGN AND RELIABILITY BETWEEN THE TWO!!😉👉
@@Plainsimple67I have the A400 Explor Unico which I bought about 10 years ago and it shoots the 3.5 inch shells.
I think what he's saying is if you're a dove Hunter the a400 is overkill
I have A300. I am very happy with
so if the a 300 or a400 was the same price which would you buy? You can buy the Beretta A400 Xplor Action Shotgun Bronze and Walnut with a 26 barrel for 1100 good deal?
The A300 is a great gun. Just do yourself a favor and change the controls on it. Button is very small and in cold weather is hard to close the bolt . Briley makes a great set for them. Easy to do yourself.
The "A300 Outlander" with the small button was discontinued over a year ago. All newer "A300 Ultima's" have the oversized bolt release that can be used with snow gloves on.
Yes agreed @@desertdogoutdoors1113
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 Thank you! I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas 🎄
Have you ever tried any SA shotguns with the port design like the VersaMax?
Thanks!
Can it shoot slugs effectively? My dad is convinced that it’s only a good bird gun? I’m a young man saving up for using it as a turkey/dove which different chokes and ammo of course. But if I did want to use it as a slug gun for deer hunting in Ohio will it fire effectively?
Si
...considering a 26" barrel on the a-400...I've been shooting a 26" O/U with extended chokes but wanted to go up in length...the 26" should be equivalent to a 28" O/U as the semi's are a little longer over all than the O/U...primary use is for chukar hunting...any suggestions on another option...TIA...
I prefer a 26" barrel for upland only, but a 28" barrel is more versatile and can do waterfowl and late-season dove duty too.
Great video, thanks for all the info. A lot of which isn't provided on the Beretta website. I have the A350 and I am very satisfied with how it has compared to other guns my buddies use in the blind. Do you know if the A350 and A300 use the same Blink system in the A400? I am still unclear about that.
If you have the A350 Xtrema, I believe those use the Blink System.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 thanks for the reply. Looking forward to future videos.
QUESTION DO THEY SELL SLUG BARRELS FOR A300
I want to buy for hurnting is it good for hurnting??how many kilometers it can cover??
what's the difference between xplor and upland model besides the kick off system and appearance? Beretta claims that the upland kick off plus reducing 40% recoil and the xplor with kick off system reducing 60%. Why would your wife prefer the upland model and what make you prefer the xplor model?
Nice video, but plastic trigger assemblies are weak quality wise.
@@Texze FYI, modern plastic trigger guards are more durable and impact resistant than anodized aluminum or cast pot-metal trigger guards. Thought you should be aware of that.
Hi Desert Dog, I just watched your video benelli vs beretta, now the beretta a400 is on my wish list
I would love to hear your thoughts on benelli supernova 12ga.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 thanks for reply, I also prefer safety on supernova, it just makes sense, I don't understand people who prefer safety behind trigger
What I don't like, is a lot of recoil and blast, often my ears ring after shooting box of 3.5s , what do you use for hearing protection while geese hunting?
I know that it's often handy to hear where they are coming from
By the way my name is Gregory, emailed you with questions before, when I lived in Saskatchewan, just moved to Alberta and got mature white trailed deer
Looking for a 20 gauge for my son to be his first shotgun. Is there any felt recoil difference between the a300 with kickoff vs a400?
The kickoff system in the A400 works slightly better IMO.
I’d have a look at the A300 ultima if my A400 xtreme craps out.
I haven’t used a 3.5” shell for 5 years.
What’s the deal on the length of pull on the 400s , I see them as listed as 14 3/8 & 14 3/4 is it optional, adjustable?
Like most semi-autos, LOP is adjustable by adding and removing spacers.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 what is oem standard ?
@@garander1954 I don't know. I always change mine to make it fit perfectly.

Can you please make a vid on Turkish made shotguns.
Probably not going to happen

Neither one of those are in the same league with the 390.
As an owner of all three, I disagree. The A400 is a better shotgun.
