i can’t imagine the survivors guilt one would experience after an event like this. these people literally lost everything and everyone in a matter of a night.
Something described as a thick mist sweeping through a village, killing hundreds of people (many in their sleep), killing the livestock, leaving the survivors with terrible rashes and wounds, and turning the water red. Well, I think we might know now what the plagues of Egypt actually were. It could also explain the frogs and locusts. Frogs fleeing the water because they can tell something is wrong with it and locusts fleeing in giant swarms because they notice something strange in the air.
Even the deaths of the firstborn. In ancient Egypt, small children and parents would sleep on elevated beds, while adolescents slept on the floor. So the poisonous gas would spread out across the ground, but not the higher beds.
@@WobblesandBean The difference is that God was commanding Moses to tell Pharoah in a series warnings and signs to let the Israelites out of slavery. It wasn't an overnight thing, there were other curses on Egypt before the passover. This event here is not a good comparison.
“Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice. ” ― Durant, Will. "What is Civilization?" _Ladies' Home Journal, LXIII_ (January, 1946.)
This is absolutely horrifying, how in one night, almost everyone and everything in an entire village can die, including the bugs and livestock. How someone can lose literally everything in one night. It's so horrible. I feel so bad for everyone, the victims and survivors. They had no idea what was going on. The victims had no idea why they were suffering and why they died, and the survivors had no idea why everyone around them was dying.
The fact that stuff like this happens throughout our world, and it's terrifying to imagine that there's a possibility something WORSE happened than this incident.
Yeah, there has been numerous cases of entire towns or villages vanishing into thin air without evidence. Leaving behind a ghost town, very eerie when you come across them like during urban explorations. All these abandoned houses, or buildings and so fort.
There was that one airborne chemical disaster I think that would be worse, I don't remember what the incident was called but I think it caused a lot of deaths, disfigurement, birth defects, stuff like that.
i read about a girl named mercy bih who was 12 at the time and only survived because she was in a different town to buy supplies for her family, all 26 members of which died. can't imagine how traumatic that must have been for a kid to have to deal with.
This is absolutely fascinating. You would think this HAD to be paranormal, but the fact that it's perfectly explainable by known science is almost more chilling.
In 2006 James Cameron and investigative film maker Simcha Jacobovici released a documentary called The Exodus Decoded. They stated that they have proof the Exodus really happened and they can explain the 10 Plagues of Egypt. They cited the Lake Nyos incident to explain the Nile turning red, driving the frogs from the river the dead fish spreading flies. The boils on people's skin and the mist. The key point they made was that the Exodus occurred 150 years earlier than what most scholars claimed. During that time the volcano island of Santorini exploded and raised all kinds of havoc in the Eastern Med. The documentary is on UA-cam.
Those poor ppl. They lost generations to these disasters. I'm glad they found ways to make the two smaller lakes safer. I hope they can figure out a way to de-gas Lake Kivu and prevent this from happening to those living in and around Kivu. It's horrific. It literally robs ppl of their ability to flee when it happens. And it wipes out all animal life. It's so sad.
The good news is that Kivu isn’t that close to erupting right now. Although the video makes it seem that way with the “average of one large eruption every 1000 years / last major eruption 3500-5000 years ago” stat, there are a few issues with that. First, there probably could’ve been eruptions since then that they just weren’t able to CONFIRM beyond a shadow of a doubt (though this is speculation on my part). More importantly, actual CO2 levels in the lake are well under half the capacity at which it would become saturated, making it MUCH harder to trigger an eruption. Nearby volcanoes erupted in both 2002 and 2021 without setting it off. Moral of the story? Be worried about it, but don’t be too worried about it. It’s being closely monitored now that the danger it poses is understood, and it’s probably not going to erupt within the next couple years.

The unsettling events surrounding these lakes emphasize the terrifying power of nature, and the possibility of similar disasters happening again is genuinely alarming.
The potential disaster at Lake Kivu could've happened in 2008, as there was an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale occurred near Lake Kivu. Fortunately though, it didn't trigger a limnic eruption (the earthquake occurred on the land nearby), but it's scary to think that any natural event near the lake could set the whole thing off. Hopefully there is some sort of solution that could prevent the disaster from happening, but there doesn't seem to be much we can do.
All of these details sounds like they came straight out of a horror novel, and the fact that it was real makes it even more terrifying. I feel for the people who survived this incident.

@@costaricansportsfan5390 no worries, I was agreeing with your assessment. 🙂 It's so scary to think those people living on the shores are living with this possibility everyday.
This may be just a personal thing, but part of why Lake Kivu seems scary is that, at first glance, it looks like a completely normal lake. There are lakes out there that certainly look more dangerous than Lake Kivu, but Lake Kivu's danger can't really be seen by most people, yet it's far bigger than many other lakes out there.
@@CriticalMaster95 you have an excellent point. The more you think about what everyday life, for those who live there, might be like, you realize how incredibly devastating it would be to have something like this happen.
I knew the answers to both of these before the 3 minute mark, I suspected volcanic activity, geothermal processes and accumulation of gasses at the bottom of the lake due to decomposition of organic matter and geothermal activity. Fascinating and really tragic.

Imagine this, you are an African living around Lake Kivu 5,000 years ago. Despite this being in the middle of Neolithic revolution you have no knowledge of agricultural. Instead you like with your hunter gathering community of a few hundred. You fish and trade with other communities. Then one day after the ground shakes a loud boom is heard coming from the lake and your village is flooded in an instant. You all run to higher ground. After that your clan discusses on what to do next, they assign you as the lookout and to stay on the mountain and they all head back down to salvage any material that might have survived the sudden flood. As they decend down you notice a mist coming off the water you think nothing of it. You see your family looking though the ruins and as the mist begins to roll in you look on in horror as they all start collapsing some try to run but down make it far. You stay on the mountain for multiple days waiting for the mist to leave. Eventually it clears out and you held back down. Your whole family is dead, alone and left with nothing you try to find other communities to join only to find them dead too. Slowly you link up with survivors and look for animals, all these day you have only been eating berries how you find none, only the rotting corpses of all the animals of Earth, not even the elephants survived, their isn't even fish in the water. After experiencing this near apocalyptic event with no explanation, what would you tell your children. Now you can see how many of the myths of demons, spirits, and Gods got started.

Oh shit that's definitely something
Yeah I was thinking about that of how the waters turned red, and how this mist came out of nowhere and killed them
I was really looking for this comment
Would you say that if you lived there?@@uranium54321
