I honestly feel bad for the Alpha Bro types. I had a contentious relationship with my dad and I bottled up a lot of anger and pain. I decided once I went to college to stop holding onto trying to be my Dad’s view of what I should be. Love with always trump materialism and womanizing for me. For me it doesn’t add anything to my life of substance.

Hi Shannon, I just wanted to say that to me you're a role model in a way that rises way above the stuff like alpha-beta conversation. I'm in my early 20s and lot of your experiences with women sound similar to mine. Also never understood the alpha stuff so I guess it's not just generational. Makes me so happy that the guy who makes the best hockey content also happens to be an absolute inspiration as a person ❤

I never got the manly/Alpha stuff either, I might have had some gender dysphoria potentially caused by these categorization of males as I never was gay but I also got called that and I never understood fellow males in K-12 school so I was the only guy in the girl group for the long haul, and I also liked shopping, so it’s interesting to see some similarities and perhaps provide me some guidance too as I don’t have to struggle to change myself. I really don’t believe in Alphas and Betas either, and I agree with you on the daring stuff as I am the cautious type. I’d rather live to when I qualify for senior discounts than risk my life. Thanks for this video! It’s nice to not feel pressured now!

In regards to the topic, I tell myself this: Want to be Alpha? 1. Stop being caught up on being 'Alpha'. 2. Be comfortable and in tune with yourself. 3. Be phsyically fit (but don't take it too far like fake "alphas"). 4. Be successful (I'm not yet). 5. Do the things that are hard, rare, or not seen as 'masculine' (Example: us men going to therapy).

Focus on the people that matter in your daily life the best you can, not what you see on social media. I’m trying to practice what I’m preaching myself. Just do your best and keep your head up. Sounds like your dad and my dad should have gotten together and gone bowling. I was born 7 years after you, but I had a similar upbringing. In the church.
My dad was deeply religious but didn’t drink as far as I knew, but he really didn’t need to. Somehow, food got thrown across the kitchen anyway, if it was spaghetti or he didn’t get tea with dinner. It took her years to leave him. She passed away this past July from nonalcoholic liver disease. My dad died in 2019, right before COVID.
I was the disabled guy with ADD who was always socially awkward and my one long term relationship was a girl I met over the internet and it didn’t work partly because I’m inadequate as well as the fact that my dad and his family tend to be a little, or a lot, racist. He called her parents a slur the first time he met them. I haven’t been able to ask a lady out since. And being disabled, I have physical limitations. Walking long distances isn’t my thing.
But this is my long winded way of saying that the years I’ve followed your channels have gotten me through some really dark times and sometimes it’s the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. So thank you for all that you do.

I think the danger with these type of conversations (just like with women) is (unintentionally or not) you can either try fitting into toxic masculinity behaviours or, conversely, having the "not like other guys" syndrome (of course building off the "not like other girls" phenomena. There is an overwhelming tendency (in things like the manosphere or female dating strategy movements, etc.) to generalize how most men behave, how most women behave and even reverse snobbery where you think (again) that you're unique or not capable of the toxic elements of gender simply because you feel you don't identify (on paper) with being an "alpha" for example. The number one thing is to consistently evaluate, challenge, and compare yourself to yourself and be aware of how you think and act because the most dangerous thing is thinking because you feel you're a certain way (i.e a "good guy/girl"), you are incapable of acting the way the bad ones do and there are a litany of examples (especially with the #MeToo movement) where people whom people thought never in a million years would be capable of doing stuff end up being the ones who end up doing stuff.

The alpha beta thing came from a guy, Mech I think, researching wolves in captivity. When he observed in the wild he realised it was not what they do naturally, the alpha males and females were simply the dad and mom. Even though he corrected his mistake it still exists as a thing for some reason. Sad, a simple misunderstanding has lead to so many ruined lives. Thanks for the interesting video.

Artificial penises are big money for fake alpha's - guns, big trucks, fast cars, hot bimbo(goldigger/groupie) women, big juiced muscles all to make you feel that everyone sees you as being a man.
Reality check - if you need something else to make you feel like a "man" then you aren't a real "alpha" as true alpha's don't need validation of their supposed "manliness". If you think showing off the big trucks or fast women make you look like an "alpha" you're just a gullible fool being fleeced for a real alpha's profits.
The real alpha's take charge and run society they don't waste all their time showing off and bragging about their manliness to validate their precious delicate little feelings of masculinity.

    • @Fatazz
      @Fatazz Рік тому

I don't see many 'alphas' taking charge of anything these days. The whole things a fallacy mischaracterizing the behavior of a lead wolf and the rest of the pack. The spirit behind the idea of being a mensch is a loftier goal.

    • @jongrey1916
      @jongrey1916 Рік тому

@@Fatazz - I agree they're not as common as some think and many perceived alpha's are just psychopaths(thin line really) but there are definitely many still out there especially in corporate management and military/security fields.
I loosely know 1 true alpha myself and he always impresses me - went to a restaurant once where he was there with another group and my group had it's reservations screwed up and the hostess was panicking a bit trying to figure out how to fix it and he just walked over and politely but authoritatively took control and calmed her down and told her how to fix it and 2 minutes later everything was good and the hostess and her manager who showed up were both thanking him.
Usually telling others how to do their jobs doesn't go well but true alpha's know how to take charge without swinging their ego-penises around and they get shit done without upsetting or disrespecting anyone.
They are rare to come across but true alpha's are actually very valuable to society, the wannabe alpha's are dangerous though.

I tend to agree I hate the beta vs alpha thing it makes me cringe. On what basis should a person (generally directed towards men) be judged whether they are an alpha? Imo it can be athletic ability, success with women, happiness with one’s life/activities, career success, even ability to fight, social prowess. I hate it when people are put into boxes, every single one of us is unique and shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves. Any time someone tries to label me and put me in a box whatever it may be, I tend to think there’s a lot more to life and existence that these type people can’t even begin to fathom.

I have Cerebral Palsy. I walk and talk well. But Alpha wannabes have punched down on me all of my life. Being gay in the 80's did not help either. I now know that getting that harassment is more about someone else than it's about me.

Being an alpha doesnt mean your a jerk. Yes there are alpha men who are jerks or worse. Being an alpha is all in your mindset. Traits of an alpha male 1. You dont need anyones approval or look for approval.. 2. You walk to the beat of your own drum. 3. You dont blame other people for your problems and admit your mistakes. 4. You chase excellence. 5. You dont care what anyone thinks about you, your mentally tough and strong enough to not have that fear.
    Beta male traits
    1. People pleasers. 2. Demonstrates approval seeking behavior constantly. 3. Will settle for second best. 4. Insecure. 5. Tend to blame others for there failures in life.

Soap Operas are funny. They film a thousand episodes a week because they’re basically making a movie a day…but nothing ever happens…well rarely.
I have a theory that in Soap Operas there are only like 10 days that they show every year. They’ll start on New Year’s Day and linger on that for like a month. A new unexplained ex-spouse will appear. The next day will be Valentine’s Day. That ex-spouse will provide some bombshell that will ruin the main couple’s date. Valentine’s Day lasts two months. Then we’ll fast forward to Memorial Day because Americans start summer then. The other spouse will see their never before mentioned ex on the beach and feelings will come back. That day lasts a month. Then it’s the 4th of July and the spouse has to fight off those feelings under the cover of fireworks! 4th of July lasts 3 months. Then it’s Fall. The ex couple’s never before mentioned son comes to town for college. He is trouble. He falls in love with his dad’s step niece. Then it’s Halloween for three weeks and they kiss by mistake while in costume. It’s then American thanksgiving for two weeks. The families put away their differences for a while. It’s now Christmas. Christmas lasts for a month and another never before mentioned child that none of the parents are aware of appears. Chaos ensues.
    Soap Opera season summary complete.

Shannon, would your wife say you are Alpha or Beta ? That's the real answer to this question.

Wasn't that many years ago I heard that being beta (or anything else than an alpha) was "bad" and acting alpha was something to strive for. I think we all have different personality types, alpha, beta, omega or sigma or whatever they are called. I believe you can't completely change who you are, just like you can't change what you've been through and you're past experiences. Though I do think being happy, successful and healthy both physically and mentally is something to strive for and that's something completely different than trying to climb in some made up hierarchy ladder.
I don't consider alpha neccesarily means you're rich, successful, muscular or have a lot of women, but more of a by-product when you got a mindset you'll be fine no matter what happens which I guess seems like you're always calm, confident and brave.
I've been there though, trying to be and do "alpha" stuff (the actual terms wasn't a thing here, until maybe 2005-2010); working out to impress, buying way too much on luxury accessories, lying about the size of my private parts, chasing wealth, social status and so on. Being on my way to my 40's, somewhere around 30 I gradually accepted I have "flaws" that might be frowned upon or that many are much better at many thing than me - and it's all fine.

This lame “alpha” movement is the epitome of the term “toxic masculinity.” It’s also really corny and absurd and not to mention it can be pretty pathetic when it becomes an entire personality trait (It gives very strong MLM vibes, too- like It’s perfect for suckers and incels). The least “aLpHa” thing of all time is caring so much what others think about you that you live a complete facade and lose yourself in nonsense. If doing what you like, not caring anything about what anyone says and being a genuine person to yourself makes you a “beta” then being a beta sounds so much better

Maybe somewhat ironically (or maybe not) this TEG video actually puts me in mind of some of the older, early THG videos.

Being alpha have lots of meanings. Kinda changed based where you are in life. Alphas who single and only dating for 1 thing(won't say it, I veiw this as a pg channel) are different from alpha men who have a family.
Generally most people in a mix of alpha and beta. Some people who more alpha than beta in them and vice-versa. They are a small amount of individuals who are mostly alpha or beta but that's a minority. There's 1 more group. I got this idea from anime. The beasts. Beasts are individuals who were alpha and beta but chose not to respect others (usually women) and do something illegal by forcing themselves onto women/men. That is animal behavior and the other groups have nothing to do with it.
BTW most of the manospere alphas are betas. That being said. Just because those betas are problematic doesn't mean other betas are like that.
I think your close to an alpha but still a beta. Which is fine. Don't let the labels changed you.

I'm pretty much in the same boat in many ways. My father and I had a strained relationship, I spent more time with my mom. I was usually more sensitive than other guys, but I still played hockey and other sports, but just didn't have the same mentality. I still get angry, I still have testosterone, but I just think differently. I got picked on lots too, just for being more quiet and different. I didn't fit into any one box because I played sports, but I was also in theater, and I also was into dungeons and dragons, and videogames.

I know with my dad he wanted me in particular to be a macho, alpha male. He watched cowboy films and when they weren't in style he went for the action films were the man is grotesquely macho. So the fact that I wasn't was an ongoing issue for him. "There's something wrong with you," is something I'd always hear. It's funny though that everything he wanted me to be ended up coming out in my sister which caused a whole heap of other trouble. That's why I don't want to get into this alpha male crap. It just reminds me of stuff I have no interest in.

I think the whole debate is ridiculous (this video of course is not). Life is a spectrum, and people fall into spots all over that spectrum. It's not just one or the other.

This is an interesting conversation topic... I appreciate you bringing it up! It's one we have in our house as we have teens (and they are curious why someone may be alpha). We are confused by they recent "alpha popularity"
Also... how did I not know about the Dr who reviews! On my way to find those!

The hilarious thing about the whole “alpha” scene is that it’s completely dependent on copying whatever influencers tell you to do, including never shutting the hell up about how independent and self-sufficient you are. There were guys like that before the specific term became popular but it’s always a joke to me.

With all the loud people out there trying to convince everyone (and themselves) that their way is the right way or only way, it's good for lots of young men out there to hear the other side from your voice of reason so they know there is another way and it's okay to follow it.

i'm "alpha" because i'm the one people call when there's a problem. not to run up on people and crack skulls but when there's a real moment of need, people in my life know they can count on me to assist them in anyway i can. none of that other stuff matters. that's for show. i'm not putting on a show.

If it makes you feel better, Shannon... I have yet to land a date for the first time in my life & I'm almost 31.5 years old. While I'm able to talk to women, I'm just unable to make a connection, and there have been a few times where women were interested in me, but never show any hints about it. My sister told me that a couple of times, and every time she said that, I get severely depressed.
Looks like I'm able to attract someone w/out even knowing. It doesn't help that people thought that I'm a woman or that I'm gay. :/
Yeah, we are definitely relatable, Shannon... as I, too, have a dad who is alcoholic.
