The thing that I love about the B-52s is that on all the recordings, videos, and even live, they seem to be having the most fun of anybody there, which really translates into the feel of their music.
OK. But I'd say the opposite. What I find compelling about the B-52s live is that they never smile, and never waver from the seriousness of their performance. In interviews they (Kate especially) is always smiling and happy. But when doing to the songs. . . . total seriousness and professionalism, lest anyone think that Private Idahos and Rock Lobsters and dancing all 16 dances and moons in the sky are less than serious!
Sure it's more about having a blast, than anything else! They knew that they may not become mainstream, but always be a crap load of fun, no good party should ever go without! I love wigging out, dancing sideways, and freaking out guests with it! How can you serve succulent garlic/dill buttered lobster, and make an impact? Not without playing "Rock Lobster" You can't! it's freaking impossible!
@@andyzehner3347 It's called sarcasm! There was an excellent surf band in Chicago called "Spies who Surf". They dressed in trench coats and dark sun glasses, had dessert props like a howling wolf, lit up moon image, cactus, ocean backdrop with lighthouse boats n' all on stage. They had what looked like two secret service guy's with sunglasses and ear pieces on either side of the stage that would react to movement and take notes, and they themselves looked straight forward the whole time, not once looking at their instruments, but rater also staring down the audience, and that playing some pretty complex music! If you had something to hide, or a sliver of paranoia, you would surely freak out and leave! They were an absolute blast to see, and very good musicians too.

The B52s were never sarcastic. Their on-stage manner conveyed the message that rockin' out and havin' fun was serious work.

This band had a very special guitarist, unusual tunings and style. It was the backbone to their unique style. Sadly he passed away way too early.

Ricky Wilson. Supposedly his main goal was to write songs that didn't sound at all like other songs.
His Mosrite guitar was essential to the sound. Probably influenced by the Ventures. East Bay Ray from the DKs is another underrated guitarist of the time with a similar surfy vibe.
@Redlined997 C2S Actually missing both the D and the G, and usually played in alternate tunings, which is part of how he pulled such unique music from those Mosrites and Telecasters. He had a sound that was truly his own, and very few guitarists would even attempt playing without a bassist as part of the lineup. Another brilliant musician who left us way too soon. I was at a radio station event where Fred was guest DJ....he played this , then ran out and danced with us all on the dance floor...surreal moment to dance Private Idaho with with the singer of Private Idaho..

B 52's will always be the "Backdrop" sound of the best parties and high school dances I ever attended as a teen back in the 80's. So many great times associate with the B 52's & their amazing harmony & a "retro" style that was actually so ahead of it's time!
I used to be a "party pic" frat party photographer. This was the first time I was introduced to their music with "Rock Lobster" back in 1980

one of the best bands of all time my older brother came back from overseas in 1987 and brought some tapes of these guys home i have been hooked ever since and recently i introduced the Bs to my 15 year old Son same result they are probably the only band we listen to together. every time i hear them i just want to dance my son too.👍🏻

From someone like me that grew up on the Beatles,Stones,Zeppelin,Who,Sabbath Deep Purple and Then N.Y.Dolls, Aerosmith,Romones,Clash and Sex Pistols. The B52's were a breath of fresh air, there look,and simplistic music that you can't stop from dancing, and having a great time seeing them live and I have seen them live from the beginning and many times since. There songs are good but seeing them live is a great experience

Saw them live at The Agora Ballroom Houston, Texas 1981. Without a doubt the best production I have ever seen. Reminded me of the old Batman series stuff from the 60’s. Very high energy.

Man, the theme parties (Gidget Goes to Africa!) we used to throw in the early 80s, the fun we used to have dancing and being goofballs to this album and this song! Saw them live at their height in 1984, great band, music and time that I miss.
Went on the Australian equivalent of a summer camp in 1980, blasting this on the portable cassette player won me some serious respect from the girls.

I was lucky to have met them all when they came to our town. Ricky was ill but still very gracious, Keith was very nice Fred was so much fun as was Kate and Cindy. We were very lucky to have met them they were my sister and mine favorite band at the time. I still love to listen to them. They are timeless.

Cindy Wilson y Kate Pierson iniciaron la banda con el baterista Keith Strickland, el guitarrista Ricky Wilson (hermano mayor de Cindy) y el vocalista Fred Schneider, luego de una noche en un restaurante chino, y tocaron por primera vez en 1977, en una fiesta del día de San Valentín, para algunos amigos.
La música de B-52's está marcada por las voces de Wilson y Pierson, y el tono generalmente monótono (o directamente hablado) de la voz de Schneider.
El sonido "new wave" de la banda era una combinación de dance y música surf, junto con los extraños sonidos de guitarra de Ricky Wilson. También eran distinguibles por su vestuario. De los 90 a la actualidad
En los noventa grabaron el álbum "Good Stuff" (1992) que los mantuvo en los rankings a nivel internacional y fueron elegidos para elaborar la banda sonora de la película Los Picapiedras (1994), con su tema principal Meet the Flinstones (en el videoclip se lee Meat the Flintstones). Aparecen en el largometraje con sus respectivos atuendos prehistóricos, cantando el tema The Bedrock Twitch.
Adicionalmente la banda fue invitada para participar en la serie animada de Nickelodeon llamada La vida moderna de Rocko en la que interpretaron el tema de inicio de la serie.
Últimamente la banda está enfocada en muchas labores de apoyo a ONG asociadas a los temas de salud y preservación ambiental. Participaron también del "True Colors Tour" de Cyndi Lauper, junto a otros artistas invitados. Este evento promovía los derechos civiles de la comunidad gay estadounidense.
El 25 de marzo de 2008 fue lanzado el último trabajo discográfico de la banda bajo el nombre de "Funplex", este es el primer álbum de estudio de "The B-52s" después de 16 años y por la discográfica Astralwerks.1 A la vez el nombre de la banda cambió omitiendo el apóstrofo.

The Boomers and their grandchildren were dancing everywhere. Many for first time at a live B52's event... sadly for most of us it was the last.
The loss of Kate's brother reflects on her and the rest of the band. We, the fans, notice and morn the loss to this day.

When I was in college there was a big outdoor concert in San Marcos outside of Austin TX and they were there. I remember being a rocker and assuming they would suck. It was a great show. Energetic and good band. Was very surprised and became a fan. This would be 1982!

She doesn't get as much credit as Kate yet was absolutely vital in helping create their signature sounds including those amazing vocal harmonies! She kind of looks miserable during their more recent Vegas performance which saddens me. Even Fred looks bored. But Kate is still way into it and it shows.
