- Is your PC not booting? Try these helpful tips and lean the methods I use when troubleshooting PCs.
- Just to add something here; I also recommend purchasing a small PC speaker that plugs directly into your motherboard if yours doesn't sport Dr. Debug or troubleshooting LEDs. The beeps codes can come in very handy in the event your computer refuses to POST.

before you start to troubleshoot your pc you will want to get a drink.
whisky, vodka, rum, gin, whatever, you will need a drink.
100% agree
I've found I've had better success troubleshooting pc issues with red wine than beer or hard liquor.
I tried to troubleshoot my PC when drunk once.
The pins fell out of a molex connector, i put them back but got the 5V and 12V lines crossed...
Impressively loud bang that shot the CD drive tray open and literally exploded the CDROM controller chip on the drive. (luckily no damage to the rest of the PC)
Ever since i don't recommend PC troubleshooting + alcohol ;)
A good beer works best.
Thats where im at right now😥
Did you... Step on it?
or... drop it?
oops wrong channel
lol, that was linus break tips
he did step on 1 of his x99 motherboard n the pin bend
Foo Rui Fung ty captain obvious
No, he fried it by messing up molex connectors.
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
Also unplug the power cord, leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then plug it back in and try again. I've found that worked when the PC has been dead after a power outage.
It's always worth trying the simple, easy to do, things first.

I managed to plug the 4 pin CPU power plug in backwards once, double check cable orientation and DON'T FORCE ANYTHING
LOL ouch
Spencer Reynolds I've done that too ur not alone
I managed to miss the PCIe slot when installing a GPU once lmao.
Vhox what did you plug it into lol?
Spencer Reynolds Me 2
Had a friend once dismantle his entire PC when it was just the power button the whole time
In my recent build my resetpins in the front of the case were connecting causing the PC to boot loop without getting into POST....
@@Psyche-D I once plugged the power button into the reset header and the reset button into the power button header
@@BenCos2018 LOL I hate those reset and power pins, they are literally identical and so easy to mess up if you aren't paying attention.
I believe this might be the same thing happeneding to my PC
How do you fix that tho? I know I’ve wired everything correctly but nothings working. Nothing turns on.
I would add, that while a computer would likely POST with no cooler, most mobos will not post unless they detect something plugged into the CPU_FAN header.
I'll give ya a LIKE for the thumbnail alone.
I didn't even have to force the tears.
They truly are tragic times. We've all been there. (staged for videos or not ha)
Science Studio sometime is just the output Cable some monitors r set to VGA or Dp and if u plug in HDMI it won't post...u have to set ur monitor to HDMI or whatever default port it supports for the time and ur good to go. I had the same issue and I was just about to return my gtx 1070 and my mobo, but I just tried that solution randomly as I was exhausted troubleshooting each and every part and it worked. Lol.
missed the first thing clean the pc of all dust etc that could be the reason the ram slot does not work
Don Marr thanks man for tip 👏🏾
Lmao thx
AMD didn't give you an R3 sample? Guess that using a 7350k as a box opener isn't enough intel hate.
Its because he openly trashes companies/products on their flaws, because remember, if youre a big company and make a shitty product people arent aloud to call it bad
It probably because he is honest
Don't forget to unplug the front panel LEDs, sometimes they can short out and cause a PC not to POST.
Did u experience this? Did it fry all the components on the mobo?
@@heyitsdazy Never had it kill anything and usually the PC will post fine with a dead LED hence why people don't even check, but it will brick some boards until you unplug it 🤷♂
My pc hasn’t been working for a while now. Looked around for a while. Still nothing. I was about to buy a new cpu when I watched this and turns out my gpu slot had died. You saved me a lot of money.
One additional thing is a improperly installed riser stud grounding out the board!
yes! that was my problem.
MyWasteOfTime is a riser stud the little metal part in on of my places that were I'm supposed to screw in but I can't because there is a tiny metal thing with my board
Vix i dont know what you mean but there is one that you cant screw in
Elite Gaming oh well dude my PC won't turn on and it's newly built :-;
Please explain
This video saved my friend and I hours of disassembly and testing and reassembling. Very helpful
i do a lot of these steps with troubleshooting, but there were a couple here i didnt think about, thanks Salazar! you always manage to keep it fresh with this channel =)
Hey Greg!
Just to let you know, it can also be a faulty CPU, i've seen one that caused 2 RAM slots not to work, while the other 2 slots were fine. :) Another thing to note is that shorted USB will cause the computer not to turn on at all, happens to me much more ofter than i'd like to.

Thank you for the step-by-step suggestions for troubleshooting and for posting the link, too. I bookmarked that link, and added this video to my "PC Build Info" playlist, too.
And, yes...coffee is ALWAYS my first step in troubleshooting anything.
Greg, you're absolutely right about making sure the RAM sticks are pushed all the way in. I've had that happen to me with the last computer I built and, to my shame, it took me a while to find the reason why my computer kept beeping like crazy and wouldn't boot.
Love the vids, dude. Keep it up!
If your motherboard heat sinks aren't getting warm on boot, it's likely dead (i concluded this on my broken motherboard)
I went through the troubleshoot up to where I should bypass my video card and connect my screen straight to my motherboard but there was no where to connect my cables so i was unable to illuminate that. This might be my next clue. Thanks
I just changed my cpu and it would put me in a boot cycle but there was this thing on the back that say 150 and 250 so I flipped it to 250 and it would just keep running. And I reset cmos but I only have 2 pins on mine and no jumper
Great troubleshooting video Greg. Wish I had these tips when I was in IT back in 98.
I used to work at a PC parts/repair shop and this is some sound advice. Almost exactly what we did in the back when a system wouldn't POST.
After 8 months, I decided enough is enough and disassembled my PC and tried to clean it thoroughly!!! After an hour-long Deep Clean, When I put together my rig again, I was started getting boot loops.
Oh boy, I could not pick a better time to screw up my PC as my area being COVID 19 hot zone is completely locked down with 2 hours allowed for shopping essentials and I said to my self what a wonderful world!!!
This video proved to be a great help as I followed your step by step approach and able to fix the issue after reinstalling CPU as well as fixing a few missed wiring!!! Thanks a lot for this great video and TOM'S HARDWARE link!!!
Actually, removing any peripherals beyond the essential is a must. On my first build, I had mistaken a Floppy drive plug for a fan one. Somehow it must have shorted something, and wouldn't even turn on. When I unpluged the fan, everything booted up fine. So unplug everything that's on ur mobo, except cpu power, mobo power and gpu.
UNDEFINED_// ILLUMINATI do u need a graphics card for the pc to work? Cuz I’m currently building a pc and I don’t have a monitor yet but I wanted to test if everything is working but when I press the power button it turns on for a second and the cpu and system fan comes on then it shuts off and no I don’t have a graphics card in yet, but I don’t wanna continue spending money on parts if I know it’s not gonna work :(
@@castashin u need a GPU for the PC to post
Ben C this depends entirely on the cpu. If you’ve got an iGPU (integrated gpu) in the cpu, you can use the DisplayPorts/HDMI-ports/vga whatever you have on your mobo to post and even boot. However if that works then most likely the gpu is at fault. Could also be the pcie lane
You are amazing!! Thank you for explaining this so well! Your first suggestion fixed my issue.
Been using my PC for years and then one morning I had a solid red CPU light on and no monitor signal. My motherboard didn't have a CMOS-labelled jumper or a button. So, I took the CMOS battery out for 5 minutes to discharge. Placed it back in, did a test run with the tower hooked up only to power, couple lights flashed and disappeared, and then it settled on BOOT_DEVICE_LED. It was ready to be fully hooked up :)
Great video as always Salazar. I'm currently in the process of troubleshooting my new Ryzen rig and this video is extremely relatable to me. I have some extra parts laying around to troubleshoot but sadly don't have an extra AM4 motherboard. Going to swap that out next, when I have the chance to roll up to Microcenter. Keep up the good work!
When your one of the only big youtubers that uses ryzen personally but you dont get a ryzen 3 sample
Robin Clarijs you mean 7700k?
Robin Clarijs Well, if you have the intel laying around and it has better performance than the r7 1800X (like the i7 7820X does outperform it, and the previous 10 core intel CPU's probably did too), than why not use the best CPU you have at your disposal instead of the CPU that is currently popular in the community? That is like having a gtx 1080 or 1080Ti having around and than use the rx 580 (which performs between a gtx1060 6gb and a gtx1070) just for the sake of pleasing the nvidia- bashers...
Brecht Schatteman the cpu is not popular, did you not see his video on why he is using it? It's so he does what he preaches, if he's gonna praise the 1700 for it's value and that everyone should buy it, why doesn't he use it, of course Intel offers better but at a much higher price, and while he might be able to afford it, the majority that watch his channel can't.
FruitCakeTech And because most people are watching his channel can't afford a intel X-series CPU, he has to use the r7 1700? I bet even most people can't effort that, so maybe he should stick to the 1600 which is preached as the best bang for your buck available now. The 'do as you preach thing' has more to do with belief than with scenario's like this, I would link such a saying more to fanboyism than a real tech channel. Why? A tech channel does not only have to think about what the viewers would use in their case of content creation. A tech channel would also look at what gives the best performance for the use case that they have available. I am not saying that he has to go buy a 7820X or 7900X, but look at what they have available. I don't know if R7 does outperform the 6th gen 10 core CPU, but if it doesn't and you have that 10 core CPU laying around, why not use that instead of go out and buy a R7 for content creation. Of course he can still preach that the ryzen lineup for the moment is the best bang for your buck available, it doesn't make him have to use it. How many car guys preach about BMW superior handling but still don't use a BMW as their daily driver? I for the moment am pro android but I have an iPhone 6 which does work just fine, but because I am advising people to go buy a new android if they ask me what they should buy, that doesn't make me have to buy an android. Of course it could prove my point and I could try to get UA-cam views with titles like "why I switched to android and why iPhone sucks" but that is all not necessary to prove my point. I don't know this channel enough to know what he used before the R7, if that setup needed a replacement or the R7 is a big upgrade than it definitely is a great way to show 'do as you preach'. But if the R7 only performs on par or worse than his previous setup, than it is not showing 'do as you preach' but more showing either enough money to throw out of the window or a certain degree of fanboyism. I know this channel enough to know that he would try to avoid fanboyism though, their are other channels that don't try to avoid a bias. The reason I started following this channel a month ago was because he tries to be unbiased and can admit it when he is wrong.
Brecht Schatteman your right, but it basically does on par with those cpus with a little overclock, and watch one of his videos, I forgot which one it was, he explains why he's doing it. So even if it's not the smartest thing, I applaud him for making a bold move.
About to build my first PC here soon, perfect timing lol
Same here, have literally every part except the CPU, hopefully newegg is fast :P
Bruce Austin appreciate it, haven't gamed since cs 1.5-1.6 but battlegrounds got me interested again.. figured perfect time to build one finally
One quick thing to try: pull out all RAM and expansion cards and re-insert. Sometimes oxidization on the copper pins causes problems and the heating/cooling/heating/cooling of a PC over time cause things to become un-seated. Re-inserting cards and RAM can 'scrub' oxidization off the copper and forces a re-seat.
Directed here from a Fix or Flop. Great that it became an official series!😁
I once had a PC (Back in the pentium 4 days) it wouldn't post as long as 1 specific USB port was in use...
if i used other USB ports (or none) it was fine.. This meant, coz i used a USB mouse and not a PS/2, the troubleshooter in the store spend 3 weeks fixing it, coz he didn't use usb peripherals...
eventually it the issue was found and i got a new mobo.
Learning by failing, i guess. Just leaving that "tip" here. test things without having usb and other peripherals plugged in. then you can always plug them in, if it posts and see how/if that works
Mikkel H wow! This is a pro tip. Really wish I could up vote you more!
To expand on your advice, I'd say it's a good idea to see test your PC with everything removed that can be removed. Remove Fans, graphics cards, all pcie cards, sata connectors, use one USB port at a time, use one ramstick at a time (test your 1 ramstick in a different computer that is working). See if it POSTS.
Then start re-adding each component one at a time.
Look it up with peripherals to see to show it can power all the crap it needs to power.
When Greg said to drink caffeine, he definitely wasn't kidding. I used to live off of coffee when I was working as a computer tech in a small repair shop.
Oh my god I know this is late but your giving me ptsd. I worked at a computer shop when I was 15 I loved it and hated it. I used to get treated like shit because I was young and would often find myself getting yelled at by customers. Alot of the time it was the people that thought they knew everything about pcs but made a very simple and minor error that anyone that's ever built a pc wouldn't make. Like forgetting mobo power/cpu power. It was great because I was broke and was gaming on a shitty pc so I loved benchmarking customers pcs
thank you man, really helpful tips. Old mobo that won't boot came back to life using different memory slots! I'm really happy and i had to thank you.
One time after applying new thermal paste I was having boot issues and took the CPU out, and turns out somehow one of he pins was bent and bent it back.
I'll share a PC troubleshooting nightmare story. Long story short, motherboard w/ bad socket fried the CPU. Shortly after installing Windows, random BSODs would happen with different error codes. Swapped the motherboard not knowing that the CPU was already fried from the first one. Had to take it to a professional who diagnosed the bad socket on mobo #1 and that the CPU was now dead. It was a friends build that I helped put together and troubleshoot the issue. He ended up eating the cost of the diagnosis and dead CPU, BECAUSE HE THREW AWAY THE BOX RIGHT AFTER HE GOT THE THING! NEVER DO THIS! KEEP THAT SHIET FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS! That's the moral :)
Or keep the box forever is the best thing
who ever is on a IT course would love greg to be your tutor 1000%
have been watching jay and linus for years and u just say things different and more professional
I found that my motherboard kept shorting because of the case standoffs created a short which turned my PC on and then off again. Then the PC boots and works for 2-8 hours and repeated the process. I had no choice but to buy a new case which worked perfectly. The old case is working with my newer machine which makes no sense. Anyway, great channel man. Keep us learning and I'll keep this Computer Fire burning inside me.
Great video brother! I'll recommend this channel to my friends too!
Hey so what Cooler do you recommend for a ryzen 1600 to get it to 4.0 as quiet as possible. Love your channel. Thanks
Agosto D'Andrea noctua nhd15
Agosto D'Andrea any 120+ AIO or the Cryorig H7 and and any higher tier Cryorig
Agosto D'Andrea Kraken X61 if you're going for an AIO and Noctua NH D15 for air cooling
Water cooling will get you the most silent cooling....
Matthew Mirchandani depending on what you mean, custom water cooling yes, aio no. Take for instance my skylake build, 6700k with corsair h110i, the pump can be surprisingly loud, louder than a 3.5" hard drive.
I have checked other forums and such with no luck... but does anyone have an idea what would cause my pc to take like 30 seconds to post?
Maybe you had too much software installed that will activate when the PC boots? Try disabling them.
Or install CCleaner to clean your pc.
An old HDD
Try unplugging components one by one. Ormaybe it's just old. or try checking the bios.
I just built it a few months ago. It has a Ryzen five 1500X and a SSD in it. As for the store for, I'll check, but it doesn't have too much on it. It has a black screen for about 30 seconds then the bios screen, then the boot screen.
Probably just a flaw in motherboard manufacturing. But it doesn't sound like an issue. Cant possibly be a hard drive as that doesnt matter with posting
Great Video. One more thing I would recommend (you may have mentioned this and I missed it) is remove all peripherals. If you get a post, then start plugging in peripherals one at a time.
greetings :) your video is over 2 years in the past but though, in case the speaker gives warning beeps if all Ram´s are build out, does that give a conclusion if either the board or the cpu is still alive?
What really happen was the i5 shit itself when Ryzen 3 released
Jobu jishuko those two aren’t even competitors. More accurate would be Ryzen 5. Ryzen 3 is an i3 competitor in both price and performance.
IN performance a r3 is equal to i5 4460 or 4440
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
A few months ago I built a PC for my friend, and it just wouldn't give any signal to the monitor (monitor only had a HDMI port) and I searched up a bit and I found something simple that fixed the problem:
Unplug PSU from wall, turn the PSU switch off and then press the power on button on your case/mobo and hold it for 1+ min and voila it got fixed.
Never understood wth was that and why it happened but I was glad it was that easy to fix
Bruce Austin Oh I see, thanks for letting me know
Thanks
Simple enough. It’s pretty straightforward. Good stuff. I’ve always had a habit of actually removing the cmos battery lol even if the new motherboards have an option to reset it.
i came here to brush up on some things for a job interview, but i was pleasantly surprised to see a such a cutie explain how to troubleshoot POST.
I had such bad expierience with AsRock boards. Literally every board i bought failed after 1-3 years...

I've had it as simple as the HDMI chord was not all the way into my graphics card
Wow man... I was building my first gaming PC. I didn't know my graphics card had a slot for the HDMI because it had rubber plugs in it which I didn't even know it was removable. So I saw your comment and wondered (wait... An HDMI can plug directly into a graphics card..?). Sure enough I took the rubbery things out and plug an HDMI in and there it went, it finally turned on after 2 days working on it. I'm not surprised it was so stupidly simple that I feel like dumbass. Thanks a bunch!!

YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH YOUVE HELPED ME
A year after starting PC building and I just learned the "Post" is an acronym. Not even LTT taught me that. If I wasn't already subbed, I would be now.

This is actually a real tech video. Great video.
very knowledgeable and technical i loved this video even if i dont have the source to change out parts, this guy hit every section of the pc dead on
You wouldn't believe it but animal urine does a good job of killing computers too. Those random moments where you just have no idea what killed the machine , or kids spilling water that quickly evaporated before you realized too.

To troubleshoot your PC, use a Mac...
Said no one ever
And neither did I.
I Love how you distinctly pointed out that you didn't due to it being that big of a cardinal sin in the pc community.

This might be an old video, but I use this video recently for a guide to revive my dead PC. Thanks it's really helpful
Now I`m scared of building my new Pc :(
Don’t be! Just take your time with it. Greg has some great videos on building, as does JayzTwoCents. Give them a watch until you could just about narrate them yourself and then give it a go!
@@Just_Call_Me_Tim Thanks for the late answer :D.
Just built a pc a few month back myself, so yeah ;)
Who else remembers the stuff that happened with the NZXT hue+... Just me... Okay then
I recently tried plugging in a second monitor to my computer, I plugged in the monitor while the pc was on and the pc detected the monitor, however the monitor did not turn on(it was plugged in). I decided to try restarting and upon restarting it turned on for 5 seconds and turned off, and just kept looping like that without every turning on either monitor. Not sure what to do as I tried doing everything in this video except the cmos thing and changing my power supply.
Thank you, you are a saint. You saved me soooo much time and work over the simplest thing.

Where the fuck is Ryzen 3 coverage?
Didn't receive a Ryzen 3 kit.
Jason Rufener How dare you mention Ryzen, I am an Intel shill and Ryzen is one of my trigger words, please be considerate to us Intel shills please. Thank you for understanding
Science Studio Lemme guess, either AMD does not like you or you arent big enough
Much smaller channels receive samples, so it must just be that AMD doesn't like me ;-)
Science Studio damn amd, want your honest review on ryzen.
Had a similar computer with the same issue. Turned out to be that the CPU had somehow lost it's ability to run with quad channel memory... Replaced motherboard, CPU, and then the RAM as well. I'm seeing this issue a lot more lately with the Intel Core i5/i7's from 6th gen on Z170 boards
The RAM not being pushed far enough happens to me all the time. It's the first thing I check now every time I get no post. Also the CPU swap in and out thing happened a couple of times.

Anyone help?
Computer randomly power cycles during gaming
Cpu is stable on overclock stress testing, gpu also stable. Aida 64 says voltages are fine and so are my temps.
Thank for the help. My issue was the motherboard battery so check that as well.
Yesterday I replaced the stock cooler on my fx-8300 and once I turned on my pc it would freeze at the login screen whenever I typed the password and it would never bring me to the desktop.
I reinstalled it made sure everything was screwed in well, but this time nothing boots (cpu fan spins, gpu , but not the exhaust fan. At this point I'm thinking I just wasted 1000$+ just by replacing a STOCK COOLER.
Favoriting this video as a go to if I ever run into a POST problem :)
the suggestion for trying each ram really helped me out, for some reason my pc refused to run dual channel. I had to update the bios to get it working
I personally have just recently ran into a problem where my pc seemed to not be getting any power. However, I knew that my power supply worked because the computer randomly booted after a few hours of messing with it. But the next morning it didn't boot up and I took it to a repair shop and it booted for them. Well, the other day it wouldn't boot again so I looked up motherboard temperature sensitivity on an off hand chance. Well, I figured out that my board is being temperature sensitive, most likely because of a capacitor swelling because it is a cheaper board. But to start the computer from a cold start all I have to do is blow dry it for like 30 seconds to a minute and it boots right up and plays perfectly. It was very frustrating finding this issue because I spent hours with my computer disassembled and it was starting to affect my day to day life. But thank God for forum posts!
Hi Greg, I love your videos, especially your newer re-approach to the science studio name and content, keep up the great work!
that was the best thumbnail I have ever seen
You get a good idea what's wrong by the error code beeps from the case speaker. I'm really surprised it wasn't mentioned in the video.
I still remember when my pc shut down again and again, change the ram, power supply and graphics card and in the end the problem was the sata cable from my hard drive.
Thnx to u and jay and jasus naxus now i run side business to build pcs and its fun work for me hopefully i can make a store soon
The only time I had a POST problem was when I swapped motherboards and one of the protective little sheets fell off the backplate of the Hyper 212 Cooler. Was shorting out against the board. Didn't even check until I found the little sheet lying on the floor.
I have an issue where my pc sometimes boot loops and changing ram slots eliminates this. But then when I turn it off and come to boot up again I have to change the ram slots again. I have tried all memory configurations and every time I want to boot I have to change the slots my ram is in. I have tried with different memory and tested all the memory in in my graphics card test pc and all works fine.
that toms post saved me back in the day
Very thorough. Thanks!
Good video for new builders (and old ones that haven't done it in a while).
Great video!
I actually shot-my-trouble!!! Thx Greg!!! CMOS FTW, not sure why I had to reset my bios but after bending pins trying to remount everything I was up to anything and the 1st thing you suggested, bam! Worked!!!
I had an issue where the laptop (craptop *AHEM*) I'm currently using wouldn't post as well and it turned out to be some sort of BIOS glitch after I got it back from the warranty repair.
Hey! So i have a B450m steel legend and a r5 3600 2 sticks of corsair lpx 3200mhz 16gb ram and a crucial p1. I don't have a gpu yet. Maybe that's causing the pc to not turn on?
Hi - my 6-years old PC turned itself off and went dark and unresponsive. As in dead, no fans. Mobo power button lit up but does nothing. Tried the mobo on the bench, different power supply same result. Any ideas where to look next? Its an ASUS X99-deluxe with a 5820. In the case it had a 1080 GPU that had recently started work on folding at home and I do wonder if the additional long-term heating had any effect.
Hello!! I would like to comment what a great help your video was for me. It was when I was switching displays when my computer suddenly stopped displaying anything after the next boot! The solution to this was your cmos reset option suggestion. I’m thankful for your help!
One step you might also want to try is removing any usb peripherals. I used to have a Bluetooth adapter that caused generic bluescreens.
i fired 1 IDE controller today on a old mobo when i unplugged the cable while it was still on but powering down
how can i fix this?
i still have the main IDE controller but i fried the second port
