17:25 HUGELY IMPORTANT info for those who are planning to use Azelaic Acid for sun spots! Re: get them checked by your doctor first, as Azelaic Acid can help lighten even some forms of skin cancer, so you may be inadvertently delaying its diagnosis. Stay safe, guys. I was given a prescription for a azelaic acid for using on my face at 19 for my acne. It helped my face so much. I was also put on accutane which changed my life, I had cystic acne all over my back, upper arms, and chest. Ten years later I noticed my skin becoming oily and breaking out again. I am now 43 years old. I have eczema around my eyes, eyebrows, and ears. I also have rosacea and people are always asking if I was like n vacation or in the sun. My nose pores are huge. The closest dermatologist is 2 hrs away from where I live. Thank you for your videos, the information is helping me chose some products to try. You are awesome.

My derm tried several other treatments to control the inflammation and breakouts and came to conclusion that is it related demodex mites. Tried it for a year with some success and now the breaks outs are back and I decided to switch back to Azeleaic Acid instead to see if my skins improves. Dr. Dray, I can’t thank you enough! I’ve had rosacea for over 20 years. I’ve seen several dermatologists over the years, the last being about two months ago. Lately I was prescribed Azelaic acid for redness. My main complaint is that it burns and stings, and dries out my skin. My skin is already on the dry side and I don’t have the pustules or papules as you described. It’s been very frustrating to try to find a regimen that helps me. Many people have told me to use aloe vera, to which I had a reaction of burning and just irritation in general. Your videos on rosacea have helped me immensely and I simply cannot thank you enough. I am almost 60 years old, and people tell me I look to be in my late 40s. I have always tried to take care of my skin, And use sunscreen consistently. Thank you again you have been a lifesaver for me and for this constant redness and inflammation. I am a former RN and so appreciate the amount of information you give to us. You truly are a blessing.

    Hello!
I started watching your videos a while ago and they have been extremely helpful!
I'm 54 years old, luckily I haven't got many wrinkles yet, possibly due to my greasy skin. On the negative side, I've suffered with acne from the age of 13. A course of Accutane in my thirties cleared it completely, but it returned after a pregnancy a few years later.
My skincare had always included harsh spot creams and possibly, light moisturisers, even though I always feared they would make my skin even oilier.
I only used sunscreen if it was present in my moisturiser/foundation ( don't hate me!).
Things have changed drastically, though. After taking your advice on board, I now use sunscreen religiously and moisturise every morning and evening. I particularly enjoy it as soon as I step out of the shower, still dripping wet and it had made such a difference to the skin on my face and body.
I use Azelaic acid on any spots in the morning and Salicylic acid at night.
It's still early days (1 month), but I can already detect a slight calming of my skin and the peeling and flaking, which before was ever-present despite the oiliness, is subsiding.
I'm left with one major problem, though: I cannot stop myself from picking at any spots or flakes of skin which makes any lesions last for days/weeks. Sometimes it's conscious, but other times I do it without even realising.
Do you have any advice for me, please, or would you consider doing a video on compulsive skin-picking?
Again, thank you so much for all your informative videos!
    Martina xx

Hi dr Dray, I started this on Monday!! The foam is amazing and it cleared me pretty fast, I have dry skin just around my jaw, can I moisturize with this. It has really lightened my skin up and fade the hyperpigmentation. I give it 2 thumbs up !! You have to hang in there in the itching. I've seeing results pretty darn fast. I also change my cleanser to the garnier skinactive I love it. I started to juice veggies and all together, I'm pretty happy.

I have acne and used both retin a and azelaic acid from the ordinary. I prefer the ordinary azelaic acid over retin a. It was more gentle and more effective than retin a. What's even better is the cost difference between the two. I paid $120 for a tube of retin a because my insurance refused to pay due to my age. I could care less about the anti-aging benefit my problem was with acne. My dermatologist pushed for this drug claiming it was the most effective. The ordinary azelaic cost me $7.00 and actually worked. I trust and respect doctors because they whole heartedly intend to help the people who come to them seeking treatment. However, I question their eagerness to push for expensive drugs before recommending affordable treatments that may help some individuals. I understand that everyone's skin is different and what may work for one individual may not work for the other but dismissing a brand that could potentially work makes me suspicious. Dr. Dray, I respect your opinions and enjoy watching your videos but you seem to have an issue with any of the ordinary's products. Just because they didn't work for you doesn't mean they're products are not effective.

GoodRx is a great app and website for getting coupons for prescription medications. With GoodRx you may find tretinoin (generic brand of retin A) to be affordable. This comment is completely separate from your experience with azelaic acid. Just wanted to let you know as I recommend this resource to my own patients who find the cost of prescription medications to be a deterrent :)

Mia Hilliard Retin A is a prescription only medication - the generic name for it it tretinoin and it is NOT the same thing as retinol or over-the-counter retinoids. It is much stronger. The Ordinary does NOT sell Retin A. Please make sure you know what things are before you give advice - especially on a doctor’s page! (Not saying The Ordinary product did not work for you, just that it is not Retin A)

Just went to my dermatologist today. Clean bill of health, no melanoma, yaaaayyyyy! I asked my dermatologist before leaving if there was a topical application for the dark spots on my face, backs of hands and a couple of spots on my arms. He suggested and sent a prescription for the 15% foam you mentioned. My portion of this prescription foam is $239!!!!!! I don’t think so. I have checked out the PCA bar on Amazon you suggested. The majority of the ratings were 83%, 4 and 5 star ratings. I have rosacea also, which azelaic acid treats also. I am way past the acne stage of my life so I am going to watch the rosacea video and see what you recommend in that video as well. Thank you Dr. Dray!

I've been using The Ordinary AA at 10% for a few weeks, and recently moved onto Skinoren (AA 20%). Context: I had rebound post inflammatory erythema caused by Mirvaso (brimonidine) in 2017, and sought out PDL to clear most of the redness. This helped lots. After several full face spot treatments, there are areas where the laser "missed" leaving pockets of faint redness which become scarlet upon applying Skinoren. The Skinoren application tingles and itches slightly for about 30 minutes. After an hour my skin color is settles back down and my face returns to its paler - albeit still blotchy due to PIE - baseline. Can I expect my skin to get used to this 20% formulation of AA over time? I did introduce it slowly and I hope that I can get my face fully back to its pre-Mirvaso baseline.

Yelen Carino-Talavera I'm actually doing Curology, have you heard of them? Dermatologists use three products specialized for your particular skin care after you've submitted a photo and discussed your issues. I have Melasma so my three ingredients are Tretinoin 0.02%, Azelaic Acid 5%, and Niacinamide 4%. I have no irritation at all and it's still a bit early to see much difference in my skin. I use Hydroquinone in the daytime and use the Curology at night and so far the Melasma is okay. I haven't heard of the one you mentioned, do you suffer from Melasma too?
