I was using Planta premium for 2 months. At first I loved it. I am still new at being a plant mom and that app helped remind me when to water and fertilize. As my collection grew I realized it was kind of limited. For example it didn’t have Cebu blue pothos and something else I can’t remember. The customer support was super quick and added them but by that point I was like do I even need this anymore. I learned how to check the soil and watch for overwatering so I don’t need to bother with reminders. 🤷🏻♀️ I would still recommend Planta for absolute beginners though!!
I like Planta because I can keep a photo record of my plants along with notes. Ill probably turn off the water reminders at some point because now that it’s winter I’m finding them annoying.
Hey Harli! Just to let you know, if you have google photos... there’s a little square with a dot in the middle (second from the right) that will identify your plants by recognizing key characteristics from your pictures!
I do a lot of outdoor gardening and always use Plantnet to identify...95% of the time the first result is correct! I love it and recommend it to everyone😊
For picture this, when it gives you the subscription screen there’s an “x” at the top right corner to get out of the screen. It’s the app I use and I don’t feel the need to have a subscription so it’s good to know you don’t have to
I use plant snap but I always have to cross reference with some google searches because it's not always accurate but I use it mostly when I'm out hiking to identify flora
A lot if people I know have recommended Planta to me but I don't have an iPhone. Glad to know it's not much better than any of the other plant ID apps. Thanks for the video Harli, good stuff!
I’m in a few Facebook groups, I post the photos in the groups and lovely strangers on the internet help me with identifying and caring for the plants. I also get to read their experiences with the plant and you always get lots of different opinions from people who have tried and tested multiple methods .
Thank you for doing this and saving me a lot of time. In the market looking right now. A person like you who REALLY knows the plants and their nuances needs to review. Glad for your effort, knowledge and sharing with us!
I'd like to see a full review of the apps, not just the plant ID aspect. I use Planta which helps me keep track of watering but it's been wanting me to water things every 3 days. I'd like to find one that lets me set my own watering schedule for each plant.
I use PictureThis and I am able to schedule my watering for each plant. It usually gives you a recommendation but you can change it which is very helpful.
Normal people trying to find out the exact name of the plant *use the apps*: "oh, this is pilea peperomioides! Me *googling 'radial leaves, looks like a palm': "it looks like a peperomia. but it is not...."
I actually use plantnet and picture this. In my experience plantnet works great on all fauna outside, like trees or if someone had an awesome garden and you'd like to know what species they have - very accurate outside, not so much inside. Picture this works best with one leaf or one flower in the picture. It's also great that if you don't find a match you can upload it anyways and the community can help you out 😁 I don't have a subscription, I just wait until I can search again.
I downloaded some and deleted some as soon as I saw your IG. But I have a few more to try now. I like Planta because it also shows where your plants are, what the exposure is like, and if it’s appropriate for that plants all for free. So I’m using that as a tracker as I get more plants and move them around. Useful for a noob.
I use Picture This - you don't need the trial or the paid version to use. It just makes you think that you do. I find it very useful for plant care information. If I'm not sure what to do with a particular plant I just search it up (it also saves your past IDs) and it tells me everything I need to know. It's saved my butt on multiple occasions!
I use iNaturalist a lot. I love that you can choose what you think it is & other people can agree or suggest what they think it is. I love it for when I go on hikes!
Thanks for this video! I use Planta currently to help kinda keep me on track with my watering schedule and what rooms my plants are in. (I still check them daily but it helps me track the last time I watered and such) Since I usually know what I’m buying before I purchase it I haven’t tried the plant ID yet. I do find that they are missing a bunch of plants in their registry, even a Monstera Deliciosa is listed as a Swish Cheese Plant, however the Variegated version is correct. So it can definitely be a hit or miss. They are also missing most of the cacti and succulents. I would love to see a video on other functions of these apps can offer, such as the watering or fertilizer reminders❤️
SO GLAD you filmed this video! I felt like I was using the app wrong. I was at Walmart and found a Cebu Blue Pothos, but none of my ID apps could confirm it, so then I got worried and second guessed my ID abilities! Luckily, I still bought her and was correct :’) Overall, I have been fairly unimpressed with plant ID apps and don’t believe the price is worth it. BUT, I do believe using up-close pictures of 2-3 leaves does help when uploading pictures.
I've tired quite a few of these for sure! I find that it really depends on the photo. They need a good shot of the leaves and no background distractions. Personally, if I'm getting stuck on one that an app can't identify, I'll take it to my insta-family. Usually someone comes to my rescue. Lol
THNAKS A LOT HARLI , PLANT NET REALLY WORKED , EVEN IT DETECTED DEAD DRIED PLANT . I FIGURED IT OUT AFTER SOME SEARCHES AND COMPARING PICTURES OF THE PLANTS & FRUITS & FLOWERS
I dont use any plant apps because they just don't get all of them right. Even I can figure out the easy ones, I need them to tell me the harder ones to identify and it just hasn't worked on any of the apps so far. Great info !!
Awesome video! I have to say though, image recognition technology is difficult. The app has to be fed hundreds of pictures for every plant to be able to distinguish it from something else. And since all plants are basically splotches of green it's really amazing they can get the genus right! My boyfriend tested image-recognition for his bachelor thesis, it was fun to see the program learn, but it was A LOT of work.
I’ve tried apps, but poor results. Facebook groups...some people are obnoxious, arrogant, and rude. Instagram has worked for me. The plant community is awesome, encouraging, and helpful.
Great video! Thanks for all the time you put in to research the apps & rate them! I really don’t use those apps much-I get a lot of plants ID watching UA-cam-like your channel! Tfs!
loved this video. I'm a new plant owner and i looked for apps for not only for identifying (like if i see a plant somewhere i like or propagating) but also to track my own plants for watering, light, food, re-potting. I'm an over waterer then i underwater when i try not to lol but thanks for the video. i use smartplant and picture this and Houzz is good for advice from others. im gonna look into plantnet
thank you. this was very helpful. i have so many unidentified plants and its be quite a task to try and figure out what they are. I ended up using the plant net app and it has been very useful.
I used to use Picture This before they did the subscription plans. I had mixed results using it. Sometimes it helped me identify super obscure plants but other times it wouldn't be able to identify more common species even with flowers to set it apart. It was a good place to catalogue my plants and a nice enough option when I wanted to identify one but I don't think I'd be willing to put money towards it when I can use other resources for free.
@@theworthysoul Honestly I was looking for a plant ID app last month so your timing is actually perfect lol But that's good to know! I remember when they rolled out the subscription they only let me scan around 10 plant species or something unless I subscribed so if that's no longer the case I might give it a shot
What I use is picture this and it’s super easy to use. I also use that company’s Buh identifier. What you really need to do is look for the one that matches best
I just downloaded a bunch, they suck. Google Lens seems to work best for identification, actually impressed, thanks to the commenters below who mentioned it!!👍
I love using picture this when im out shopping and things dont have a name on them! Then I add it into my planta app and it tells me if it will work in that rooms lighting! Makes for a little bit smarter shopping haha, and I like planta because it reminds me water my plants!
I use plantsnap, and it generally gets me close enough to feel confident making an ID. If I ever become obsessed with wanting to definitively identify something, I'll probably try some other apps. Thanks for putting in the work for the rest of us, and don't forget to cancel that subscription! (That sounded like a UA-cam signoff on Opposite Day 😃)
I use picture this and have been successful so far. I even take pics of the plants I know the names, because you can create your garden and go back for reference (on diseases, care etc)
Harli i have been able to identify my plants by watching you, Nick Pileggi and Summer. Others I find on google. House plant groups are great too, so I don't need an app. Thanks for the video.
This video was interesting for me, so now I may just download one so I can see what I find out on some of my succulents or cacti. Thanks Harli, another good ONE!!!
I use PictureThis. I'm not sure why it required you to subscribe. I used it for two years for free before I opted for unlimited identifications but its only because I use it so regularly. I'm also surprised that none of them got philodendron brasil. My PictureThis app got it right away. I feel like every app wants something slightly different when it comes to the picture so that may be why none of them did very well. I'm excited to try a couple of the other apps now after this video!
There is an amazing house plant facebook group called House Plant Hobbyist and they are great at helping identify and just give great care tips depending on what you need! Also just a fun supportive group of all active plant enthusiasts. facebook.com/groups/houseplanthobbyists/?fref=nf
I use GardenCompass which gives you three accurate id’s a month, unless you decide to pay for a membership (which gives you unlimited ids + care guides... when to fertilize or repots...etc) it also identifies pests and fungi :0
Just an fyi on Inaturalist, you first post the photo you put in what you think it is, which you can compare with other species etc. through inaturalist if your not sure, then once you post other people then can confirm your id or offer other suggestions. It is more of a citizen science app then a houseplant id one, so if you did post them make sure to hit the captive/cultivated button :). Anyways I really enjoyed the video it was interesting seeing everything compared.
I really just feel like with the amount of plants there are out there that are similar looking that, I've never had good experiences with those apps. I find most of my success identifying on the houseplants subreddit.
I don't really buy plants that aren't labeled, unless they're succulents that come in an arrangement. Google images covers everything I need on that front. But I think I'm going to download the Pl@ntNet app because we do have some weird plants down by the creek that I'm curious about. Thanks for the reviews!
Thanks for this plant app review. I dl an app a few months ago but it was pretty useless so I deleted it. I love my plant peeps here and on Facebook to help me ID my plants. I'm going to try and look at Google lens though since there were many who suggested it hwre. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.
This was highly valuable. I learned paying for those other apps are pointless lol. They all kinda suck which is also good to know so I guess just educate yourself & you’ll have better luck.
Have you ever heard of Proplifting? There’s a whole subreddit on it, I’ve never done it myself but here’s what I know about it: it’s propagation of leaves that have fallen off of plants in big box stores. I know that in the subreddit there are strict rules on how you can obtain these leaves, they either have to be picked up from the ground or somewhere around the plant (they have to fall off naturally) or you need permission to take a cutting from a plant. Obviously you can’t just walk into a store with a pair of scissors and go around cutting off leaves to propagate. Technically it isn’t illegal, but morally it’s wrong
The only app I have is Plant Snap, I won't pay money to get an app, guess I'm too cheap. Thanks Harli for this video, it is full of great information, have fun, see you soon, bye for now.
I use Picture This. Purely because it was the first to come up in the App Store. I’ve tested it multiple times just to see. You didn’t need to buy the premium membership either! You could’ve just hit the x in the top right corner and it would’ve given you free IDs to use. For some reason I’ve never run out of “Free IDs.” It will say I had 11 of them left but if I close the app and go back in it’ll be completely different and say I have like 27 free IDs left. Might be a glitch but I think it’s more like the membership is a scam. Regardless I’ve used it on houseplants and outdoor plants and it gets the general idea right. I need to do further research to figure out the specific species or variation, but that seems to be the theme for all of these ID apps.
I use GrowIt because it’s just a huge community of real people. so if you are willing to wait for the answer, they have gotten every plant I’ve submitted correct
Hi Harli! I have an interesting proposal for ya! I have noticed how names and branding often are different with competitive apps and on a closer look, I find something stupid. What about looking behind each app to see if the AI software used for all of their plant recognition is a copy and paste? If true, their predictable result makes more sense...sadly!
So Seek is actually made by iNaturalist! They came out with it as a kids friendly version of the app, because of child privacy laws -- I'm not an expert on this but I know it has to do with location tracking on iNat, which is why Seek can identify but not store location info. Also, the iNaturalist website is way better than the app! It has a pretty active community of science nerds so when you don't know something, you can @ someone else (it shows you who the top identifiers are for any given species) and they'll see your comment and let you know what they think. :)
The best instant plant ID I've tried so far is the website "plant.id" Its not an app unfortunately, but it works 9/10 times and will give the exact name rather than a generic broad identification. It gives you 3 free id's and then asks you pay for more, but you can usually trick it by closing the tab and re-opening it to get another 3 free again.
I've used Plant Snap, Picture This and a few others, including Google Lens, but the best of the lot is Picture This because even if they don't get the actual plant correct they might get the family or some other information that sends you in the right direction. Also, if they get the family right, you can use this information to help you better care for your plants. I use the free version. I don't have much luck searching Instagram because I don't know what to search for...sooo. Maybe I'm not searching right. I have the best luck on Instagram, when after scrolling through for a while, I see the plant and check the caption. If it's not there or in the comments and the person seems to know it, I ask and they normally respond. When I don't know and tag people (not all) who when you watch their UA-cam videos, promise to help in anyway they can, they don't respond; not even to say "idk". What I'd love to know are Facebook groups geared towards houseplants. Maybe you could do a video about user friendly Facebook houseplant groups.
I have PictureThis, and I've had mixed success with it. It correctly identified a cactus my friend bought, but couldn't identify ANY of my Hoyas (I have a Krimson Princess and a Queen, a Publicalyx splash, and a brevialata). I would say it works for super common houseplants- although having to pay for premium is annoying for something that doesn't work so well. The community on there is a plus, as I have had other people correctly identify my plants.

Hello, please make video about succulents, your top 10 or how to take care about them.💚💚💚 I love your videos.
This was highly valuable. I learned paying for those other apps are pointless lol. They all kinda suck which is also good to know so I guess just educate yourself & you’ll have better luck.
Which one is best app for identify for leaf of plant's,. And working in Android phone. Please...... You prefer..
I like this video! It was fun and I ended up downloading one of the apps and having fun seeing if it would recognize my plants 😂
I use Planta to remind me when to water my plants. Do you think it works well in that aspect?
The only app I have is Plant Snap, I won't pay money to get an app, guess I'm too cheap. Thanks Harli for this video, it is full of great information, have fun, see you soon, bye for now.
JUST WHAT I NEEDED
I have a few downloaded and hate them alllllllll
Yes!!! I needed this video
I use plant net. I love being able to categorize things.
I love love love this video!
Smartplant should identify the Golden pothos, they were able to identify it for me even though my picture of the plant came out horrible. 🙂
Thanks for sharing.Set a reminder in your phone to unsubscribe from those apps you paid for.Have a blessed day.
Do you have a video on how you schedule/keep up with all your plants
I use GrowIt because it’s just a huge community of real people. so if you are willing to wait for the answer, they have gotten every plant I’ve submitted correct
Hi Harli! I have an interesting proposal for ya! I have noticed how names and branding often are different with competitive apps and on a closer look, I find something stupid. What about looking behind each app to see if the AI software used for all of their plant recognition is a copy and paste? If true, their predictable result makes more sense...sadly!
Google Sense is the best. In the photos app choose a picture of a plant and it will identify it, reall great when i need to know what something is.
I love this! It’s such a good video idea
Plant smart is one I am looking into
Was there an annual membership?
*pubicalyx, only one l
@@seamseams Oh thanks. That's one plant name I always manage to mess up!
@@rebeccabirch6130 It's really easy to mess up! I had to look it up and double check when I first got mine :)
I use Planta & love how it reminds me to water my plants lol
Well they don’t know how often maybe for some when I started buying plants it made me water my succulent every 2 days like what
I didn’t have any luck with it. It was 0 for 10 in identifying plants in my yard!!!
i have NO IDEA what two of my plants are, maybe i’ll try some of these..
Let me know how it works for you!
I use An app called Picture This. It works really well IMO.
Nice video! The one that works best for me is Plantnet. You should try using close-ups of a single leaf :D
I will definitely try photos that way next time! Thanks for the tip!
