  • Welcome to this little insight of how the clutch system of my 350 cc power vintage JAWA has been improved. With nothing / no solution from another bike on the market I was forced again to help myself by re-designing some major components to make it robust enough to cope with more than 30 #twostroke HP without any visual changes to the clutch side engine cover. Yes, that’s the point. Certainly there would be even better and more modern technical solutions for a clutch, but nothing from stock fits below this small cover…
Here is a little more information why all of this became necessary:

Great content, i watched the other videos of your channel, you have gret skills mate and you sure know how to handle a two stroke! Here in Italy we do a lot of stuff like these on old vespas, somebody manged to overtake 30hp on that small thick frame, quite crazy, so we had to solve problems like yours... clutch bell which easily open in two parts, gearbox shift cruises which breaks and so on...today we have a lot of reinforced stuff on the market made by some really skilled guy, but somebody still does it like you, machinig everything from zero into the garage. I've been into two stroke for more than 15 years and i love them. Last month i found, here in Italy, a rare Jawa 250 californian , white fenders and black\chrome tank , from 1970...a quite rare motorcycle, especially here in Italy. The baby has got just 7000km but needs some repair, a new piston and a new connecting rod , i've already found almost every part. I love this bike since the day i took it with me from its recovery on the outside, mine has got the same engine as your, the 590 with the second type of piston , the one with those marks for the porting on its top. I would really enjoy to make a better contact with you, if you have a social or something similar! 🙏 thanks for your contents , greetings from Italy and from a young jawa owner!

Great video. As a czech and owner of many JAWA motorcycles, there are 2 major clutches. Your's original is called 634 small clutch for older jawas. Then there is the "big" 634 clutch, which has some plates more and stiffer springs, is also a duplex, but essentialy is the same as the "small". Then there is the 638 clutch, which is way less reliable, but can be fixed with proper adjustments and can transform much more horsepower. Small 634 clutch can transfer up to 15-17hp (theoretically), the "big" can transfer up to 23hp (my personal experience is up to 26hp, but you have to get special springs and cant do stunts and full accelerations in short periods of time) and 638 clutch can transfer up to 35-60hp. All of these clutches can be swapped with no to low changes to engine, except small clutch isn't duplex. My favourite is normal 634 with stiffer springs, i use it on my 638 engine, which has 23-26hp. New is cheap and lasts +- 100k km before replacment. 638 clutch is the best for tuning and 99% of all racers use it. It lasts up to 150k km and when fixed (look it up, solution is pretty easy), it is better in every aspect than 634 clutch, except some minor issues, which make the difference in normal commuting and that's why is 634 clutch more popular.
Also, modern 4T motorcycle oil can be used, beacuse plates are made from the same material as any other manufacturer uses today. This also helps transfering more power. All hp values here are with factory oil, which is basic 75w90 (don't know exactly), which gets its job done.
Yeah and one note to the clutch hub tolerances. In normal service and commuting, just ignore it. These machines were poorly made and are made to go everywhere. There are examples of 400k km of these engines and clutches still worked. My has 120k km and i changed plates once, 3x springs and 4x primary chain over the years. By normal bike's standards, my clutch is KO, but for jawa, its almost like new. I reccomend looking up 638-640 series, my favourite indestructible jawa motorcycles.

Thanks for watching. Are you sure the bigger 638 clutch fits below the old type 559 / 360 engine cover?

    • @sodiumchloride7788

@@Quiet.Light.Engineering it should be OK. Look at bistella 500, it's 10cylinder Jawa with 60 hp and has the same engine block from 350/559. I think only problem is the primary gear, which must be changed to duplex. I ve seen many tuned 559 and many had 638 clutch. If 634 clutch is compatible with 559 and 638 engines, then there should be way to install 638 clutch to 559. I am more to the newer jawas, but I can ask on a our forum, where are really skilled and knowledgeable people.
P.s. salut to you, great skill and dedication.

The larger clutch only fits in conjunction with the (rare) automatic Jawa clutch cover, not the best looking and smooth shaped original one. By all means I wanted to keep this cover. This is why I modified the small standard clutch.

Very awesome! Love you work. You're like the master of Jawa. Its very fun to see a quite simple, low powered vehicle get completely changed by someone that has absolutely mastered a brand/ model. My own project is a Tomos. I've been modifying the clutch too, cuctom cnc segments, Puch maxi cylinder, custom exhaust, custom welded intake, waaay bigger high tech carburetor. Its just fascinating to absolutely get 100% of the maximum performance out of "old obsolete tech". Looking forward to the next video!

Hi I was thinking about making external clutch basket. My idea was to make external basket diameter 4mm bigger and slots for lamels make by EDM wire cutting machine. It would be very strong, easy to production if you have accest to EDM wire cuttin machine.
