I bought one of those new in the late 90s and still have it unopened to this day. I can't count the number of trips its been on and never used, better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it.
This was my first kit, after military survival training in the mid 70s. The original, tobacco can, wasn’t really designed to be a comprehensive survival kit at all, but for summer day hikers on Mt. Rainier to stave off hypothermia when unexpectedly caught out. It was meant to supplement the ten essentials of hiking/backpacking. The kit you reviewed added several item off the 10 essentials list, knife and compass for example. Nice addition for your collection.
I am actually reasonably impressed by that kit. As someone who's reasonably knowledgeable in the subject, I can see a wealth of possibilities in what they have given you. I appreciate that it is tightly packed, but I think one could get a useful small fishing kit in the bottom of the tin and a few feet of snare wire. As a non tea drinker (I'm allergic to tea), some coffee sachets are definitely going to get added.
Cool. I have one of the older Prince Albert can styles. Mine, like some of my other kits, the bullion cubes some what melted and made a bit of a mess. Originally they were called Survival Kits but after people were caught out with the kits but didn’t use them because they didn’t think they were in a survival situation TMR changed the name to Storm Kit. Makes sense.
At least the maker of this little kit was clear about what it was intended for. The instruction sheet started out by telling you, in their own words, right up front, the very first rule of survival; Do not panic, sit down, get your head straight, and think things through. Then suggest to you just what to think and do. This little kit is really not bad. It was clearly not intended for anything where you have to survive for a long period, but would be great as an emergency kit for your car or truck. This was a neat little video, I think I'll subscribe and see what else you've got. Hopefully you are better than some of the other channels I've seen recently. ;-)
I like the idea of a tobacco tin that packs in a cargo pocket. Provided you were wearing a knife, multi tool & flashlight and had a few Cliff Bars and a bandana in your other pocket; maybe a 4mm drum liner in a back pocket you’d be set for a very hungry but reasonably safe experience in a camp limited only by your skill set. Remember what you carry in your pockets is always better than the elaborate kit left in the car.
I contacted them Tacoma Mountain Rescue a couple years back and asked them about their storm kit and they said that they still have some and with the interest they where thinking about making more of them to sell on their web page.
I first saw the smaller version of the storm kit in 1982 while working at Kings Canyon National Park in California. I never got around to purchasing one and I don't recall the asking price. The small grocery market located at Grant Grove village carried it on a regular basis.
Sweet! As a collector and general nerd I know the thrill of finding some obscure trinket on Ebay. In very nice condition, too. I do wonder when it was made. There are bar codes and some items made in China which point to a modern build date yet there's nothing inside with a url or web addy. The Herb-Ox beef base is exactly, precisely the same as the box in my cupboard; I don't know how often they tweak their packaging but if I swapped a sachet of mine for yours you wouldn't be able to tell 'em apart. It might be fun to send snail mail to that address and see if they respond! Nice score, man!👏🙌
I've only seen the small version which seems more common. If you had two small ones you could balance out the weight of a survival kit to keep in pants with two cargo pockets like BDU pants.
Long time viewer, first time commenting. Great review. Saw the earlier video, thank you for the update. Have a few kits I would love to send you, but couldn’t find a shipping address. Where can we send stuff?
Addendum: It just occurred to me that if you taped one of the Choghlans Survival Kit in a Can's to it, you would have a fair amount of capability inexpensively. Wouldn't be pretty, but they would go a long way towards keeping Mommy's Little Soldiers carcass alive for a week or two.
Hi... I ur subsriber.. also i love ur videos.. jst wanted to give u a hint for ur video colour tones.. as a photographer myself i am noticing that there is a slight yellow tint in all ur videos.. kindaof not true colour.. may be u need to do liitle alteration in the temperature selection in ur camera recoder, jst put it to auto colour...since sometimes our camera would give some tints of various colours due to the lights u use for the video. Auto temperature would match all ambience lights around us and produce good tone. Jst thought i would share this with u . No offence. Cheers
I want to see the room you keep all these kits in! Lol
The original Storm Kit got me interested in camping and the outdoors as a kid in the early 70's.
Nice!
That’s outstanding Mark. How you been brother?
I laughed when I saw how tight it was packed. I guessed that you weren't going to add to the kit, and I was right👍😁
I also was waiting to see if he'd add to the kit... or replace something at least! LOL.

Candle, but no torch! As you say, the kit is better than nothing.
Really enjoyed that, cheers and all the very best 👍👍👍🍻
And thanks for the cool informative videos
That compass 😂 I would definitely trust it
Keep the videos coming mate, i really enjoy your thorough description and opinion of these kits without destroying them as some youtubers would do.
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for another great review. You're honest and to the point and don't try to bedazzle with BS. Love your channel.

I appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing!
Really enjoyed this. The knife looked to be a small imitation of a BUCK model I purchased back in the mid 90's. The kit seems quite good for its time.
Thanks
I’ve had one for years. LOL!
Nice kit thanks for the review 👍
Nice video 👍

Let's see you get all that stuff back in there! :-)

I like the tin lol thanks for bringing this to us.
That's got some decent stuff in it in a pinch it would help a lot seen a comment on where you store your kits I'd like to see it too
Yeah, that's coming in the future.

*Great content my dude* 👍
Very interesting thanks, but it was almost halfway through the video before you actually opened the kit.
Cool finds!
Would be fun to try and reproduce this! Please could you scan the leaflet as a PDF, it would make interesting reading.
I wish I had his survival kit collection.
I as well, He has one of the coolest hobbies ever, and one day it'll save his life. So it's all worth it.
Pro Survival Channel
Nice video. It would be nice on all your videos to start with knife and then use it to open another items in the box! :)
I would pour some water in the tin to see if it leaked. Good vid.

This box is similar looking to Colemans powder mustard, but bigger.
That knife is known as the “dollica” in the knife community
Would you consider doing a homemade no comprises kit of your own as a video?
did you manage to get everything back in the box - I was hoping to see you try at the end
Yeah I did. It wasn't that exciting. I did film it, but ended up cutting it out.
Nice video
Storm kit was from the late 70 early 80 i carried one back in the day
1999 is vintage? T_T I feel old. Great video dude, love these hahah.
I know, crazy isn't it?
Are you here because of the X-Files - Talitha Cuma?
Are These still made in similar form?
No, alas.
wanted to see if that knife could actually cut the string... :)
Found the Tacoma kit unopened at a yard sale for $3!
I'm not impressed by that kit, but you're right, its better than nothing. I carry a better kit than that whenever I leave my house, though!
I would prefer if the main container was thicker metal or Stainless Steel. Then it could be used to boil water in to purify it.
It already can be used to boil water
Better if include and energy bars
I just went on eBay and they was selling one for 17.00
👍
5:13 it looks like there's a tank behind you.
Ha. One of these I'll do a video tour of the room I film in. There's lots of stuff
tell the price of the things inside
At 7:10, the knife looks like a Spyderco knockoff.
Интересно
Swap idems better box
Yooooooo
Actually kinda early
