Omg the playing cards triggered a memory from the 80’s…we were on a field exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida during a hurricane. Not good for a fair-weather, daytime-only gun system…so we had some down time. No one had money or playing cards but at some point I hear the excited banter of an obvious card game. Wtf? I walk over and see the guys had gotten scrap paper from who knows where and made cards, and were using slivers of pine cones as money! Gotta love a soldier’s ingenuity! 😂😂😂😂

For those requiring a visual, this is a great kit to copy. We found some stainless steel containers that were sold as "bento boxes." at a DIY outlet here in the Philippines. The included snap-on handle made it a decent cooking/water-pasteurizing container. Filled with items similar to what was in this kit, we were happy with the end result. Our little DIY kits would absolutely get you past a rough spot.

Thanks for the video. I have used the military version of this kit and had the great experience of doing one on Bob's advanced courses in the Pilbara. He teaches many other skills as you might imagine. We lived for 3 days off the land using the civvie version of the kit, basically the same. Well considered and repeatedly tested and used in the outback, a good kit. The knife in my original tin was Smith & Wesson, I think they still are same manufacturer, but unbranded. One or two issues:- the tin leaks, or did, don't know if that's been fixed. You will need to use another container if you want a hard container. These days I just keep a metal bottle and nesting cup on my belt, and the kit contents modified for me are distributed through my pockets. The Condy's crystals can be used as an alternative to bleach / chloride tabs for water purification. Also good as a disinfectant. Bob used to joke the cards were the most important thing in the kit as he guaranteed if you started playing Patience/Solitaire, it would be no more than 15 mins before you heard a voice say "Red 10 on the black Jack".

reminiscent of the pocket kits we carried in the 80's that were based on the Royal Marines Commandos kits. Fit in an Altoids tin or more commonly a PX soap dish, which were a little larger. We used a large rubber band around the outside to keep it from self-destructing in the jungle/water/airborne ops. I love how things have become so much smaller since then, and the added small multitool. I have several Gerbers from knife kits that have found their way into my pocket kits.

The original Bob Cooper kits with the small, double edged knife were better quality. The ferro rod just had a hole in it for the lanyard as I recall, with a bit of actual hacksaw blade rather than the spatula scraper, and more wire IIRC. The big killer was the Aussie knife laws which killed the original blade. I've seen that model of multi-tool- the blade isn't the worst grade of chinesium but it's pretty close, as are the rivets, which will be fine for cutting the wire moving a pot but they can't take much abuse. The playing cards weren't there in the 90s, and I seem to recall the tin being smaller. This was back when Mr Cooper used to recommend a Ka-bar or similar in a sheath with pouches for a stone and real pliers.

  • @swagmanandy

Those boullion cubes will be just fine as long as you make your soup with BOILING water , they do go soft and mushy but are still perfectly edible as long as you use boiling water.
That tin can be used to make char cloth and you should magnatise your sewing needles so you can use them as a compass.

A good review, i like these kits, shame there's no commando saw, you've shown they have their uses.
The potassium permanganate christals can be used to sterilise water. You have to judge the consentration by the colour, too weak it won't work, too strong it'll poison you! It's a wound steriliser somewhere along there too, good for foot fungus I've just heard.

That's a really good point. It's also like survival rations and people complain they don't taste very good. That's by design too, because if they tasted like a Snickers candy bar, people would eat them out of boredom and then if a real survival situation happened, they'd have no food. So, they make them taste good enough to eat if you're starving, not bored.

Sir, a kit from Down Under, Skipper! This container is easily long enough to accommodate a 4-inch mini suture driver, a short forceps, and other standard surgical items for sewing up the more major camping cuts that continue to bleed instead of clot up. Considering that a hospital may charge a thousand dollars just to judge whether sutures are warranted, preparing for some DIY surgery may be sound practice for many people. Also, the buddy system can really come into play if the cuts are in any way hard to reach for sewing, as they often are. I still recommend a combination of Florence Nightingale and Annie Oakley for a gentleman's wilderness companion, plus a good dog. Survival with style, sir!

Be very careful sewing up/closing a wound in the bush. Close a contaminated wound and you get infection, especially if the suture material is not sterile. There is a technique called "delayed primary closure" where a wound can be sutured any time within about 5 days with no detriment to healing. The first few days of wound healing are "preparatory". Often best just to clean a wound and dress it. Suture later when it's clear there is no infection, and you are in a cleaner environment. Remember, sutures are just one method of holding wound edges together to allow healing with minimal scar, and almost all bleeding will stop with adequate direct pressure. Twenty + years of dealing with trauma, I found tourniquets RARELY necessary.

Thanks mate for posting something Aussie, however I have never heard of this guy maybe he lives over in the west. Some of the contents looked like they were from the 90's as for the multi tool definitely Chinese made and may last awhile lol. The surgical blade is still usable even though it said it was expired good fishing kit always good to have a sewing kit even if the thread is multi coloured lol. The rubber band looked like it was on it's way out so everything is replaceable plus I assume the felt on the upper lid is for noise reduction I would remove it. I also would not have a ferro rod & steel I prefer a Bic lighter & matches . I guess we all have our own specs but if this was the only thing you had in an emergency then make good with it.

If the multi tool screw driver is not sharp and you can’t sharpen it in the field, use a piece of cloth to use on the end of the screwdrivers to get a better grip.

It is a $90 kit today, and those food items did not come with it, they are an extra $7. For that price, make your own.
