Orientations and Indoctrinations - Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

- What happens on day one at orientation? And how do theme park companies try to instill their company culture? I look back at some of my orientation materials from the three companies, and how they impacted me and other workers, as well as some ways that Disney may be forgetting how to do it.
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...
Not only did I work in theme parks for 10 years, I've visited a whole lot of them as well. Here's some stories of great visits, not so great visits, favorites, reviews, and much more.

Special thanks to Anna Simpson for the Park Tales intro and Daniel Higgins (Goofy809) for the outro. Copyright and TM issues have been cleared through Joanne Choi of Disney legal and fall under parody/ satire provisions of law.
Love watching your videos, Sir Willow
Great Video. 😃👍♥️
This helps me think back to my orientation at SFSTL. We definitely had a folder with all the information similar to your packets, and if I remember right it was on that same day, after we had our class we went out into the park as a Culinary Group to Fowl Ball where they had set up lots of registers for hands-on learning and a few scenarios(also upselling refill bottles and such) then from there we were split off by Area(1-4 throughout the park, Hurricane Harbor was its own) and shown around the locations in our area. That job jumpstarted my customer service abilities!
Thank you kind sir Willow!
I loved the honesty
I watched Give ‘em the Pickle, it was good!
I do hope Disney changes back to be the amazing parks of the past. After our last trip in 2022 we have no desire to go back.
When working at Universal, they have the cast members magazine and they also have what they call high 5s!
That leads would give cast members if guests or other team members when they complmented or did a great job.
I like your shirt!
That is a lot of papers, my job training for a certain fast food chain was all done through videos on a database. So boring and inspired me to just suck it up and do the job. They tried to make it sound special but it just came off as fake.
When I was first at WDW in 77 the four keys were only taught to the operations division. They were Safety Show Courtesy and Capacity. Back in the days when Loss off Mdm Leota was a101. No guests to be admitted. Also loss of the Earth slide on the ceiling of Space Mountain was also a101
Not sure when Efficiency replaced Capacity, but otherwise the same. And yes, it's pretty obvious that the standards on Show have declined a lot since when you were there. Since when I was there as well.
Could you talk more about Silver dollar city orientation? What is was like?
About a day of filling out papers, an introduction to the park, it's history, and it's core values, talking about park policies and introducing people and departments and an overview of how things work in the park and benefits and programs for employees.
I worked at universal studios hollywood ca for 7 years
Can a dog legally work as a camera operator in the US?
Do you have a folder for your dog camera trainees?
How much do you think social media plays into cast members not going out of their way as much? For instance, I imagine if someone gets a different towel animal and posts it, then other guests will expect it and complain if they don't get them.
Honestly, almost none. It's an attitude change from up within the company that has made it's way down to the rest of the CM's working in the parks. There is just not the care nor desire to take care of their guests as there used to be, a bigger emphasis on cutting costs and squeezing pennies, and not going above and beyond like they used to. That comes from management.
“Won’t get in too much trouble for showing you”
What? Did you sign an nda as a theme park attendant? It isn’t NASA…
I believe I mentioned it at the beginning of the video. Yes, absolutely signed NDA's when starting work at all 3 of the parks. That's a standard part of the hiring process and the paperwork that you get at the beginning of orientation.
And I am familiar with a couple of channels that have been shut down because former cast members violated that NDA that they had signed.
Plus there's the part of me that believes in keeping my word. :-)
