There is a natural balance in peasant farming, the baler restored that balance. I've had no machinery fails all summer but the balance was restored when I cut hay with 5 days of sun forecast and it rained for 14 days.
Check out a water air extinguisher, you fill them 3/4 with water then add compressed air. We fill and charge them and have them mounted on the front of the bailer. They will shoot water up to 30’ Great channel, good luck
I’ve had this happen; I learned to disconnect my power unit first because if the implement blazes, then it will be nearly impossible or too dangerous to disconnect; this enables me to be mobile, too.Thanks for sharing Josh because, at the least, folks might double-check their extinguishers (you need to get a higher quality device by the way). FYI: We use extinguishers with an ABC rating because it’s often a greased area that catches fire on the equipment, in addition to the field. There is a need to duct tape the nozzle so debris or pesky insects don’t pack it full, as well as flip the powder-filled extinguisher from time to time, tap the sides and bottom with a rubber hammer to loosen the powder, as it is packed tight due to constant vibrations which settles the powder. Nuf-said ✌️
FWIW: ABC extinguishers have a corrosive chemical and will wreck havoc on machinery. A Water extinguisher is likely a better option. Everything was going amazingly well, until it wasn't. Then most everything wasn't going well. Glad everyone is safe, and Mrs Stoney Ridge is recovering. The loss of that one bale is significant when it was one of only 5.
Josh, you're fortunate. I had the same thing happen to me several years ago, but I didn't have a fire extinguisher and the baler burned up. It was all I could do to get my tractor unhooked and moved away so it didn't burn down. I had to call the volunteer fire department to come and put it out. Expensive lesson learned.
We had a guy down the road from us bale about 120 bales and put them in his barn. He did not leave them out long enough to get the heat out of them. That night the whole barn was blazing. It took 3 fire departments to get it under control. It burned for a week strait.

Haven't seen a baler fire like that since I was a kid. I'm glad you didn't get hurt or lose any equipment. A shovel is a good tool to carry, too. The year before last a bearing went out on my baler but thankfully I smelled it before it burnt the baler up. I didn't have a extinguisher so I used my jug of water to put it out. After that I went straight to town a bought a extinguisher. its always good to have one.

Utterly amazing how well that rake works. Didn't seem to be doing much at first - everything changed when it began to see actual work. Those got em spinning fast!
You live and learn. Time to build a trailer with at IBC tote carrying 275 gallons of water. A gas powered pump with 1.5" hose will give you 15-20 minutes of fire fighting. Then, if you want to really be ready for anything, a couple more totes on a pallet rack so you can pull the trailer next to them, open a valve and very quickly gravity feed the tank for continued operation.
Wranglerstar has some older videos about making a portable firefighting unit. You'd probably make it differently, but I'm sure it has lots of good info to consider.

Living way out in the boonies, We kept a gas powered water pump and several hundred feet of fire hose for things like that. We were at least an hour from any fire department. We used it to fight barn & mill fires. We had creek, river and ponds all on our place. So there was always water close. It might be a good ideal to get one for your place. Good luck to you.
The old farmer I used to work for would have calmly said "that's what you call an Oh s#!+", turned the tractor uphill, dumped the bale so it rolled into the pond, and calmly headed to the shop to fix the baler without even stopping. I can picture it now. Good times. That's some quick thinking, Josh, good job, I'm glad you're ok. I second the other fellow who suggested getting a pump and some water hose. A couple hundred gallon water tank on a wagon with a reliable trash pump could come in handy for more than one job around the farm for sure.
That which does not kill us makes us stronger, my friend. Farmers are pretty tough. You got an experience that will help you make a better plan in case there's a next time.
Time to get a real fire extinguisher (or 12). Yes, they're expensive, and you have to make sure they work every year... but it only takes one bad fire to ruin everything. You might consider getting a PTO or gas motor powered sludge pump and you can suck water from your pond and make quick work of smaller fires like that. Good luck!
What he said. That little fire extinguisher is nothing. You need the big red ones and notices I placed a "s" on the end of ones. Have at least one for every structure.

Not every day i see these . Closest thing involving a hay fire i saw was a poor dude having to jump out of his burning farm truck letting it crash into some hay bales. That was a sight to behold.
Don’t buy the cheap extinguishers from places like Walmart or any of the ones with plastic handles and triggers, they are junk. I run a welding shop and almost had an issue when one failed me so now I only get ones with a medal trigger. Also this year I had a gas tractor burn so I feel your pain.
Good Video. For some positive feedback I would strongly suggest you get a good old fashioned 2.5 gal. Water Fire Extinguisher with a small amount of dish soap added to the water. They are cheap to buy and you can charge them yourself. You would be amazed what 2.5 gallons of water will do if your Bailer catches fire. And always have a good ABC Extinguisher as well. Keep in mind that a ABC Extinguisher is a bit of a misnomer. They don't work well on a Class A type Fire.
Get a pump mentioned below and a plastic tank (water/soda) for the kubota if you bale hay in a field have it for fire protection, have a pump or gravity feed for backup. plus get some red full size extinguishers. Be safe nice fire truck action. Did you ever consider a dry draft standpipe for the pond?
Glad it didn’t hurt anything but one bale!!! Some times crap just happens, I replace my fire stuff every two years and I use Kidde. They seem to work really well!!!

Seems like this can be used as a learning experience. Id suggest putting together a trailer you can quickly attach to your utv, with a gas powered trash pump, hose, and basic fire fighting supplies. Glad you didnt lose the equipment.
I have a water trailer on the farm now...however sometimes stuff like this is gonna happen....fyi the fire department couldn't even put this out..it took about 3 days to burn up

Never carried a fire extinguisher on me till I caught 10 plus acres on fire and some woodlands and almost jumped the road on to another persons property and all happened in less than 5 mins! Felt so stupid afterwards not to mention the fire running up the side of a horse barn only good thing is next year it all came back even better lol

Honestly, this is a good thing. Only one bale was lost and nothing more. We all learned a lesson here (sorry, at your expense). Now, suddenly hundreds of farmers are running out to Tractor Supply to buy a few fire extinguishers. This is the whole point of having this channel.
I’d be just pulling the pin and letting the hitch rest on the ground could always just jack it up with a jackall later. This is my worst nightmare realized Least it was a calm day with little wind
Kudzu Kommander Oh no question you gotta get away from the bale. Generally what happens is a piece of the bearing falls into the bale once you’ve opened the gate and it releases some of the tension the belts have put on the roller that crapped the bed . But than the second priority has to be saving the tractor. There’s more often than not butt loads of chaff and dust built up. I could hear that water sizzle when he poured water on it. A gust a wind. A chunk of chaff falls out of some crevice. And the scenario changes faster than anyone could think possible. Once the heat gets so bad you cant even stand it. Let alone if the baler is jammed up on the pin or something goofy you just couldn’t foresee. I’m not criticizing anyone I’d just hate to see someone loose a tractor. It’s unfortunate that these kinds of deals are learnt through experience....., bad experience LOL. Another thing a guy needs to get is a heat gun. Keep it in the tractor and when ever you gotta get out to use the bathroom or whatever you check them rollers to see if the heat is building in any of those bearings. It’s no guarantee. But the idea is to prepare for the worst and when it doesn’t happen you can count yourself lucky. And if it does go pear shaped you may just eek out of a catastrophic scenario. (Even though this one was sure bad enough)
Put your disc on your spare tractor before bailing. Circle the fire and turn the soil. You can control any field fire. The farmer next to us had a combine fire within a 1,000 feet of our house. He went and got his utility tractor with a disc and circled the fire. If the fire were to jump the circle you just cut a bigger circle and disc up the jump.
Water extinguisher is the best for balers and they’re easy to recharge yourself. They cost around $250. Glad you didn’t burn your baler and tractor! I’ve been there and have the T-shirt
We had a 2 row tractor mounted corn snapper catch fire in the field once. Tractor and snapper were lost because we couldn’t get the fire out. That’s when dad bought fire extinguishers
It’s amazing how hard they are to put out. I work for an excavation company and helped the fire brigade out on a hay barn fire last summer, 500 bales on fire. Took 10 fire crews, 1 water bombing helicopter and 3 excavators 3 days to sort out.
I am not saying you faked this fire but you didn't show the hot bearing that you poured hot water on at 16:01 something really doesn't smell right 16:09 do you mind uploading some of the pics of the damaged bearing and the area that got hot?

I always carry a fire extinguisher on my baler...for obvious reasons. I was complaining to some folks who were buying cows how bad my hay season was and she said her brother in laws tractor had burned...along with a lot of damage to the equipment hooked to it....made my problems pale by comparison.

Back in my time growing up, we didn't have the big round bails but rectangle ones. Our baler was a lot different and I don't remember any one having theirs catch fire. I do remember a neighbor's hay barn catching fire and burning for days. Stacked hay is really hard to put out once it starts to burn.
i worked on a farm back in the 90s as a kid.we had a square baler catch fire .we used 2 fire extinguishers and still couldn't get it under control. fire dept was called but since we was way out in the field it took them almost an hour to get to us but by then 60 acres was burning and the winds picked up and shifted. by the end of the second day well over 200 acres were lost and 2 farms burned to the ground leaving 2 farmers and their families home less.the good news was they had insurance and an organization helped them back on their feet.the next year we had the best hay we ever baled and the abundance of it provided for them.cause of fire was determined as a roller bearing failed in the feeder.thanks for the vid
You need to get an electronic heat gun. At start of your bailing day you need to run the bailer for thirty minutes or so and check the bearings on each roller shaft on the ends. Good bearings will run near 85 degrees. Also get a water extinguisher. Also check your bearings two to three times a day. I’m retired from a local John Deere dealer in south central Texas. Curtis
You need a rechargeable water extinguisher, those little ones like that would do nothing for the baler if it was trying to catch on fire. You have to be able to cool the bad bearing or it will just reignite. You were lucky this time.
Buck Owens and Roy Clark had it right, "If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all". You guys have had more than your share of late. It REALLY sucks about the new extinguisher though. Years ago I was heavy into building RC planes and flying them with a club I was a member of. We has gas engines then and most now have battery powered planes. Recently I got back into flying but now with a Dji drone. I have the Mini 3 pro and boy is that thing fun. I like the idea of you using your drone for showing the work and the farm. As and old man now, I have to have something to spend money on. lol. Beware of an old man that flies a drone.
Always always carry an extinguisher in your tractor when bailing hay. We have water extinguishers that you fill up and pressurize with air, they are refillable. Glad it wasn't any worse than it was. Hoping Mrs StonyRidge heals quickly. Something else, if you have a spray rig, keep it filled with water and hooked to a 4 wheeler or UTV parked near hay field. It will save having to call fire dept. Things e have learned over 30 years of bailing hay.
Take the air hose and give your baler "an air bath" before you store it. I started carrying a 2 gallon garden sprayer in the cab of John just in case. Got a fire ex. in the tractor but I find water cools the bearing down along with the grass on fire. Thank goodness ya caught it when ya did. My greatest fear when baling with a cab is a bearing going hot, cause you can't smell it in the cab, all you can do is keep an eye out for smoke. Stay safe; that bale will smolder for a week.
Iv put out a many hay bail fires as a volunteer thru the years. My trick is use a house trailer spike nozzle. They are made to poke through house trailer walls to dump water in areas with no windows That and Iv made some spikes with galvanized pipe with a valve plenty holes drilled and end beat and forged to a point.
In my time on the farm, I never saw a baler stat a fire. I have seen a stack of square bales in the barn start smoking. We had to quickly unstack it and find the bale/bales smoking... This turned out lucky for you...
I learned something a year or so. A pressurized water extinguisher from the dealer with the bracket, 400 bucks. The EXACT SAME extinguisher and bracket from a fire alarm/extinguisher service was 150. Water extinguishers are what you want on a baler. Type a, b, c's aren't as effective. The water ones are maintenance free almost. If they lose pressure over time, any air chuck will fit them. If the o ring goes bad, 3 dollar fix.

@Summit X ABC is very corrosive & its very difficult to clean off machinary. CO2 is an alternative if you don't want to use water.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I had my eyes on the pond... I was thinking either toss a pump in there to spray on the bail, or... roll the bail into pond and water down the path it took afterwards. Glad youve got a water trailer. Dealing with a field fire is no joke. Ive had too. It can get real scary, real fast! I think, Id be sending a strong worded message to that fire extinguisher company too. Just seeing the extinguisher fail, made me question every one that I have.

Never carried a fire extinguisher on me till I caught 10 plus acres on fire and some woodlands and almost jumped the road on to another persons property and all happened in less than 5 mins! Felt so stupid afterwards not to mention the fire running up the side of a horse barn only good thing is next year it all came back even better lol
Good Fire extinguishers are cheap, comes with mounting brackets, mount them on truck, tractor, and that baler. Great video!

Honestly, this is a good thing. Only one bale was lost and nothing more. We all learned a lesson here (sorry, at your expense). Now, suddenly hundreds of farmers are running out to Tractor Supply to buy a few fire extinguishers. This is the whole point of having this channel.
I’d be just pulling the pin and letting the hitch rest on the ground could always just jack it up with a jackall later. This is my worst nightmare realized

Oh no question you gotta get away from the bale. Generally what happens is a piece of the bearing falls into the bale once you’ve opened the gate and it releases some of the tension the belts have put on the roller that crapped the bed . But than the second priority has to be saving the tractor. There’s more often than not butt loads of chaff and dust built up. I could hear that water sizzle when he poured water on it. A gust a wind. A chunk of chaff falls out of some crevice. And the scenario changes faster than anyone could think possible. Once the heat gets so bad you cant even stand it. Let alone if the baler is jammed up on the pin or something goofy you just couldn’t foresee. I’m not criticizing anyone I’d just hate to see someone loose a tractor. It’s unfortunate that these kinds of deals are learnt through experience....., bad experience LOL.
Another thing a guy needs to get is a heat gun. Keep it in the tractor and when ever you gotta get out to use the bathroom or whatever you check them rollers to see if the heat is building in any of those bearings. It’s no guarantee. But the idea is to prepare for the worst and when it doesn’t happen you can count yourself lucky. And if it does go pear shaped you may just eek out of a catastrophic scenario. (Even though this one was sure bad enough)
It might be cheap insurance to have a good extinguisher on all of the motorized vehicles

my kubota dealer adds the big huge fire extingushers on all kubota bv series round balers wich is a good feature free with it

Get ya a water powered extinguisher. 2 1/2 gallons of water and 100 psi of air. You can refill it yourself as many times as needed!

Put your disc on your spare tractor before bailing. Circle the fire and turn the soil. You can control any field fire. The farmer next to us had a combine fire within a 1,000 feet of our house. He went and got his utility tractor with a disc and circled the fire. If the fire were to jump the circle you just cut a bigger circle and disc up the jump.

Water extinguisher is the best for balers and they’re easy to recharge yourself. They cost around $250. Glad you didn’t burn your baler and tractor! I’ve been there and have the T-shirt

We had a 2 row tractor mounted corn snapper catch fire in the field once. Tractor and snapper were lost because we couldn’t get the fire out.
That’s when dad bought fire extinguishers
It’s amazing how hard they are to put out. I work for an excavation company and helped the fire brigade out on a hay barn fire last summer, 500 bales on fire. Took 10 fire crews, 1 water bombing helicopter and 3 excavators 3 days to sort out.
We always keep a water style fire extinguishers on our balers and an electrical style fire extinguisher on our tractor . Keep safe great video
I am not saying you faked this fire but you didn't show the hot bearing that you poured hot water on at 16:01 something really doesn't smell right 16:09 do you mind uploading some of the pics of the damaged bearing and the area that got hot?

I always carry a fire extinguisher on my baler...for obvious reasons. I was complaining to some folks who were buying cows how bad my hay season was and she said her brother in laws tractor had burned...along with a lot of damage to the equipment hooked to it....made my problems pale by comparison.

Back in my time growing up, we didn't have the big round bails but rectangle ones. Our baler was a lot different and I don't remember any one having theirs catch fire. I do remember a neighbor's hay barn catching fire and burning for days. Stacked hay is really hard to put out once it starts to burn.
i worked on a farm back in the 90s as a kid.we had a square baler catch fire .we used 2 fire extinguishers and still couldn't get it under control. fire dept was called but since we was way out in the field it took them almost an hour to get to us but by then 60 acres was burning and the winds picked up and shifted. by the end of the second day well over 200 acres were lost and 2 farms burned to the ground leaving 2 farmers and their families home less.the good news was they had insurance and an organization helped them back on their feet.the next year we had the best hay we ever baled and the abundance of it provided for them.cause of fire was determined as a roller bearing failed in the feeder.thanks for the vid
You need to get an electronic heat gun. At start of your bailing day you need to run the bailer for thirty minutes or so and check the bearings on each roller shaft on the ends. Good bearings will run near 85 degrees. Also get a water extinguisher. Also check your bearings two to three times a day. I’m retired from a local John Deere dealer in south central Texas. Curtis

You need a rechargeable water extinguisher, those little ones like that would do nothing for the baler if it was trying to catch on fire. You have to be able to cool the bad bearing or it will just reignite. You were lucky this time.
Buck Owens and Roy Clark had it right, "If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all". You guys have had more than your share of late. It REALLY sucks about the new extinguisher though. Years ago I was heavy into building RC planes and flying them with a club I was a member of. We has gas engines then and most now have battery powered planes. Recently I got back into flying but now with a Dji drone. I have the Mini 3 pro and boy is that thing fun. I like the idea of you using your drone for showing the work and the farm. As and old man now, I have to have something to spend money on. lol. Beware of an old man that flies a drone.
Always always carry an extinguisher in your tractor when bailing hay. We have water extinguishers that you fill up and pressurize with air, they are refillable. Glad it wasn't any worse than it was. Hoping Mrs StonyRidge heals quickly.
Something else, if you have a spray rig, keep it filled with water and hooked to a 4 wheeler or UTV parked near hay field. It will save having to call fire dept. Things e have learned over 30 years of bailing hay.
Take the air hose and give your baler "an air bath" before you store it. I started carrying a 2 gallon garden sprayer in the cab of John just in case. Got a fire ex. in the tractor but I find water cools the bearing down along with the grass on fire. Thank goodness ya caught it when ya did. My greatest fear when baling with a cab is a bearing going hot, cause you can't smell it in the cab, all you can do is keep an eye out for smoke. Stay safe; that bale will smolder for a week.
Iv put out a many hay bail fires as a volunteer thru the years.
My trick is use a house trailer spike nozzle. They are made to poke through house trailer walls to dump water in areas with no windows
That and Iv made some spikes with galvanized pipe with a valve plenty holes drilled and end beat and forged to a point.
In my time on the farm, I never saw a baler stat a fire. I have seen a stack of square bales in the barn start smoking. We had to quickly unstack it and find the bale/bales smoking... This turned out lucky for you...
I learned something a year or so. A pressurized water extinguisher from the dealer with the bracket, 400 bucks. The EXACT SAME extinguisher and bracket from a fire alarm/extinguisher service was 150. Water extinguishers are what you want on a baler. Type a, b, c's aren't as effective. The water ones are maintenance free almost. If they lose pressure over time, any air chuck will fit them. If the o ring goes bad, 3 dollar fix.
One thing I dont miss about haying is picking rocks in the spring.
A good habit to get into with any piece of equipment at the end of the day..is to go feel the bearings to see if there are hot or warm ones..
