I want to be the first of 500 to say you shouldn't use a chain like that lol!
Yep...lol....and the tracks! Lots of good feedback for sure Mike!
Skideebop
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I like the name Lester for the truck...because it is "less-ter than perfect".
And about your crossing...our neighbor was having the same problem so he had my brother build a 'ford' (not sure if that's the correct spelling but its pronounced the same) in the creek. It has worked out very well. You could always use the culverts somewhere else on the farm.
And by the way I love to watch your videos..keep them coming!! Lots of love to you and Mrs Stoney Ridge!
Subscribed. It's all good. Nothing ever goes as planned. Perseverance. Amazing you can deal with the work and the inevitable setbacks and still film it all. You are a busy man.
Concur! One of my co-workers spent 3 or 4 days in the hospital after shock loading a logging chain 'til it broke and the end whip-lashed back around his head, nearly taking his eye out.
Josh, I really enjoy your channel. Please keep them coming! On March 12th of this year, I got my own dozer stuck in the mud. I was trying to pull it out forwards with an excavator by reaching over the back side of the dozer blade and dragging it out forwards, towards me. I've done this before and never had a problem. As I was pulling the dozer towards me, a wear/cutting edge on the bottom of the dozer blade snapped off, flew through the air, and hit me right between the eyes. The safety glasses I was wearing saved my life, but I still have more than two dozen facial fractures, and I am facing a few surgeries after the virus goes away and the hospitals in my area open back up. Why am I telling you this? I have more than 25,000 hours in the seat of various heavy iron. I know better. I made a mistake that almost killed me and I cringed when I watched that chain go tight in your video. There are much better ways to retrieve things. Take it from somebody who recently almost took his own head off! A couple tips for you and anybody willing to read this far: Pull from the lowest point possible on the stuck unit, even if that means spending time with a shovel first. And.....Pull from actual tow hooks or tie-down spots. You were pulling from grab handles for entry that very easily could have snapped off. Last: (Especially true with a winch cable, but true for chains too) Use a "dampener" when pulling. By this, I mean a blanket, and old coat, even a canvas tarp. Wrap it around your chain or cable and secure it with duct tape or zip ties. I use an old moving blanket that I got at Harbor Freight for $5. If you use this, and the chain or cable snaps......The dampener absorbs a bunch of that shock and may prevent serious injuries. Sometimes we are all guilty of doing what's easy, instead of what's correct. That recent choice recently got me very seriously injured. Avoid making the same mistake I did! Good luck in the future with your awesome channel, and thank you for sharing your life with us, and keep the great videos coming!
YIKES! That is quite a story. The mental image I have of your injuries is going to make me think a great deal before taking any shortcuts going forward. Thank you for sharing and I hope your surgery goes well.
Just a little math about using smaller culverts - A 24 inch culvert has 452.39 square inches so two 24 inch culverts have a total 904.78 square inches - A 48 inch culvert has 1,809.6 square inches - You will need about four 24 inch culverts to move the same about of water as one 48 inch culvert
Use as a learning experience. I have seen many chains break and fly through the air. Tractor always the go to, just pull no jerking. Thank God noone was hurt!
Wow! That old truck purrs like a kitty!
LA City boy in the house! Grew up in the back woods of Florida :). Love thus stuff, takes me back to my childhood. One day I will retire a farmer. 👍🏽
I LOVE ALL THE POSITIVITY IN ALL UR VIDEOS U TEACH ME ALOT AND U ARE A GREAT UA-camR U ARE ONE OF THE BEST
Thank you so much 😀
Great video, always nice to see Mrs Stoney. Stay healthy and safe.
That belt was do to come off anyway. You just help it along. Miner details. Now if you had blown the motor up that would been really bad. Life on the farm got to love it. Thanks for sharing.
You have too much fun. I used to. Age does not allow me to work on the farm anymore like that. Keep the videos coming.
I'm glad you're enjoying the channel brotha!
There’s a chain spot on the bottom of the skid on the front just below the boom bump stops for next time.
Skeeter, for the skidsteer. Also I feel like bubba ropes may be willing to sponsor a video or two.
Ready to see the difference new tires make on it. Nice of you to help the old man so much.
Enjoyed the video Josh. It is just part of life when working on something and then something else happens. But life is good. Thanks for sharing the good and bad.
🏴🇬🇧🏴 Manchester, England wishes you a great day 🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧
You should name your skid steer little Johnny
SRF I have always heard if you aren't doing anything, then bad things don't happen. Just comes with the territory. Love your spirit.
I feel ya bro. I was raised on a farm and one time I got a tractor so stuck you could turn the rear wheels with your hand. I mean the tractor was sitting on the differential so hard that there was hardly any resistance to turning the rear wheels. I had no way to get the tractor out and would have been up a creek if a man had not saw my mess, knew a trick for getting tractors unstuck, and helped me get the tractor out. Sorry, but when I saw your mess I couldn't help but smile.
If you could predict the future, I predict that the grouser tracks woud have been mounted BEFORE the project began.
I'm glad you got out safely.
I would suggest a series of small repension dams that will slow the velocity of flood waters and drop it's beadload and will allow vegetation to grow to help stop bed erosion
Love your channel and attitude , when you work stuff happens , great tractor , and awesome farm!
Josh......if you want to eliminate opening the hood to hook up that wire.....either run 2 wires or a double wire if you have some one wire butt connected in place of that aligator clamp and to a toggle switch in the cab and other from the toggle switch to the siliniod. Ive run a bunch of old trucks set up like that. Ive always put a switch in the cab as ive been in a few instances were ive needed to shut the motor off quickly.......its alot easyier to just flip a switch off.
Nice skid steer (skid loader)
That dump truck is a cool addition to the farm!
Liked the video I have to do some culvert work myself on a area that was washed out by the rains. Just a heads up two 24" pipes do not equal a 48" pipe. The area of a circle is 3.14 R squared so a 24" pipe is 452 Square inches time 2 is 904 square inches. A 48 inch pipe has an area of 1808 square inches so you would need four 24" pipes to equal a 48" pipe.
I was thinking you should have used the John Deere to pull it out when you said the same thing. Lol. That single axle truck with those tires on it and it being empty. You just had no traction. Hey Josh it happens to all of us. Great video. I really enjoyed it. 👍👍👍❤️
Good stuff 👍👍🤘🤘💪💪 The real farm life !! There’s always something breaking down or getting stuck 🤣🤣 Got to love it , I sure do .. Whhooooo stay safe & god bless
Just take the broken belt to Napa and they have a belt gauge that will show you what belt you would need. And just get one size up and one size down just in case if it didn't pull over in time some Ware
Just FYI, You need three 36" large culverts under that road + rock wired in place to prevent erosion. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
Sorry Josh, the Area of a Circle ⭕️ grows exponentially Larger, as a circle gets bigger.
a) 2ft drain pipe = 3.14 sq ft 2 x 2ft drains = 6.28 sq ft -total area.
b) 3ft drain pipe = 7.07 sq ft More water than (2) - 24in pipes
c) 4ft drain pipe = 12.57 sq ft equal to (4)- 24” drain pipes
I have thought about this for several days and decided to tell Josh to do the math. But you beat me to it. His 2 two feet pipes only carry half what one 4 foot pipe will.! Still enjoy the videos and cannot but like Josh's enthusiam.
@@craigmayes8606 Yep - caught that too...
@@rhymereason3449 Me. too.
The tractor saved the day! Can you show us pouring concrete on that bridge?? I really want to see how you make that happen.
Why did you take the tracks off? Anyway when pulling something out of a mudhole it's better to hook low on the stuck unit:hooking high and it pulls down on the front.
Tracks off to install new tires...and haul to dads place to help him out
Every word I was saying\thinking. OMG chain for dinner!!!!!!! At least nothing was total loss. Lessons learned.
25 years in field artillery with hearing protection and I still have loss of hearing (but they say I’m fine) and tinnitus. But the Nashville TN VA hospital takes real good care of me.
Stoney Ridge at mud fest thanks for the videos buddy appreciate them
The bridge looks a lot better. Belts and hoses don't like to sit in the woods for years. It's hard to tell how old the rubber on it is. You will probably have to replace most of it in the next year or so. Still, it has a really solid drivetrain so it should make a good farm truck.
Run a toggle switch inside the cab for your jump wire, will make life alot easier!
Well looked like fun. I got my truck stuck. It similar to yours. Little older lol. Took me half day with the tractor pulling and unloading the whole truck. It s easy to get into these situations. Whole lot of work sometimes getting yourself out. Somehow mine always include the tractor and other vehicles. There is always that darn mud. Enjoyed watching someone else this time. Have a great week.
Josh, we a have a creek like that on our farm...in dry weather, it looks like you could get away with one culvert or two. but when it rains, all the uphill water converges into that stream. So, we had to put THREE giant pipes in for our culvert. No more washouts!
Can smell the inside of that dump truck, brings back memories!
Hey that’s part of living on the farm if you don’t get stuck in the mud every once in a while then you’re not having any fun 🤣🤣🤣
That storm was absolutely brutal. I'm SE of you. I was waiting to see you get a little pop from that jumper wire....LOL.
The cross sectional area of (2) 24in pipes is only 905 in^2. Just (1) 48in pipe has double that area at 1,810 in^2. It’s not linear, it goes up by the square of the radius. So if you keep having problems one 48in pipe would more than handle it.
Good thing you had that toilet paper in the glove box when the pucker up moment happened 👍
Mercy I hope the chain does not brake . Not the safest way to do that !!!
Hey Josh you should lay a a piece of a fence down on the rocks before you put the concrete down and then put the concrete on the fence to hold it down and dirt on it .
Fun times. Don't you just love getting stuck? At least it was not in 3 feet of snow or more. Others have commented a lot about helping you do a better job of towing. I would have tried to push the skid steer our using a chain or rope. Needless to say I was never very successful. Thanks for the video. I think this might be a temporary fix for the bridge. Thanks for sharing.
Looks A lot like my f8000 so that might be what yours is they are great trucks keep up the good work Josh
Water is a powerful beast, if this is an odd occurrence for the water to get up over the road then you just repair the road as you did and call it good till next time. If this occurs on a regular basis then I would dig out your culvert pipes and open the ditch up completely. Then I would use the material you dug out to raise the elevation of the road on either side of the creek and then find a retired flatbed semi trailer to put across for a bridge. I'm sure cousin could hook you up with one.
Jason E old single wide trailer frames work really good for that purpose after the top side of the trailer is removed of course. You can usually grab one off Craigslist for a couple hundred bucks and will last a lifetime if set correctly
Put in a few fence posts about 1 foot apart a few feet upstream of your culvert. This will stop trees and linbs from plugging the culvert. I have seen this happen and the washouts are amazing.
to keep from being asked, "honey that old excavator and dozer are looking rough, why don't you get rid of them"? I built a nice equipment barn around them, because about twice a year I need them for just this kind of project. have some fun Stoney Ridge, keeps ya getting up in the morning and PS, if we get that much water in a hole, we call it a well and irrigate with it.
Those handles are NOT for pulling on or chaining down to a trailer. You will rip the HANDLES off. There is a loop on the front of the frame to pull or chain to a trailer. If that chain happened to break it could come right back at your face. Stay safe.
Need a track machine for the mud! I rented a wheeled skid steer to do work in the back yard and sank that puppy quick!
When towing something out of a wet hole i.e. as your skid steer you must always keep the chain under the bucket and the short as possible that way you’re always lifting the front of the vehicle that is stuck and helps to remove it from The wet hole
Never to old to learn.
I bet someone wishes he had kept that backhoe someone sold glad you didn't flip it when you were pulling on it great video 👍 nobody hurt good day
That chain scared me!
You should give that dump truck a good wach inside and out make that white pop.
Great video, if there is anything left of the belt take it with you they can measure the length of the belt and get you one to fit!
The truck probably would have pulled it out if you hooked the chain lower on the skidsteer
The bridge came out nice. Getting good on the skid steer. Next time, bust up the dirt below before you add nee dirt on top. The dirt you added is going to sluff off as it is not bonded to the original dirt. Some people compact in lifts using a sheeps foot roller, creating undulations for the new dirt being added to bond to the existing dirt.
Hi..... 🎥👍👍👍
Country neighbors what would we do with out them. Great Video.
Too bad you don’t have tracks for that thing.... o wait haha also, be carful where you hook the chain man. I would hat for you to get hurt!!
My philosophy: If you never get stuck in the mud and never break anything... it's because you're not doing anything. #LifeOnTheFarm. I told my wife a while back, we should take some pictures of the mishaps that happen on our farm and get them printed on a tee shirt ,then right smackdab in the middle of all of the pics, put #LifeOnTheFarm
Agree with the comments about hooking the chain through the hand grip loops being dangerous, puts the pull to high and digs the nose into the mud making more wore work for the tug vehicle, tends to upend the skidsteer, and is a serious risk to the operator if the chain fails, could do more than take out teeth, might whip across chest neck or face, all very dangerous.
Two 24 in pipes don't have the same cross section as a 48 in pipe, the multiplier for cross section area is root 2 or 1.4 giving a c/s area equivalent to that of a 33 inch pipe. If the water backs up enough at that crossing to to flow over the roadway, you need a much larger pipe capacity, or an actual bridge that is clear in the creek bed. Ultimately the object is for the water to flow with little or no obstruction at the crossing, then the water level will not rise up to erode the crossing.
Being a retired concrete and civil contractor I would not pour concrete on bank. Here in Australia we use a wire basket that we put the rock in while the basket is the required position stacking basket creating a wall.
Great video josh I really like the dump truck I started trucking in 2007 I drove a 97 peterbuilt with a cat diesel they are very good engines I would love to be there and help you haul some dirt thank you for sharing wooo
Put the tracks back on the skid loader and you dig out a proper pond in that hole to help lower the water table some in that bottom and make it more usable? Then you will have a proper pile of dirt ready to use when you need it...
Josh, just an fyi, as a plumber by trade ,you said at 2:00 , two 24" pipes make a 48" pipe. As far as dia. And water flow goes. It does not . Sorry.
Yep...the math was explained to me a little better....however it still would have flooded over..the creek filled the 4 foot pipe way way up stream..there was alot of water coming through
Just like a kid. Playing in the mud.
A good name for the skid steer is Bumblebee
Pooling water like that might make a nice pond
Josh, you should name the old truck - 'Mo", not because of the Lester signage on the side.. maybe?? :)
Love the channel. I know its hard to film so much but we enjoy your videos.
I'm going to have to ask what possessed you to hook to the handle for getting in and out of the machine hahahahahahahahah next time Josh hook it to the bucket it makes it a whole lot easier and when you are real stuck you can use the hydraulics to get yourself out even if the truck or tractor can't pull you out
Agreed. I have rolled my bucket with a chain tight around it many times to get unstuck. Hook it to a tree or heavy object...roll bucket, move, tighten chain....repeat.
Its RIP Rap but it's your video so you can call it what you want, awsome video man
Drill some holes on each side, set some poles and build a small retaining wall next to the edges of the driveway. Then you can pour the concrete too.
Josh, try to find a Gates FleetRunner belts. They are usually green but not always. I use them on anything I haul or tow with. Little more expensive but I have never had on fail.
The Truck’s “Pull Out” game was weak. 😂😂
It may have been better to to hook the chain lower down on the front. What it was doing was trying to tilt the skidder forward as you pulled it putting all the weight on the front axle pulling it down into and against the front of the hole and taking it off the rear.
That's awesome 813 viewers in 18 minutes of post 😎
Skid loader names:
John Boy (for obvious reasons)
Little John (ditto)
Bambi (little Deere)
skidoo for the skid loader
Hello my brother u work very good I like amazing
Run the jumper through the firewall to a cheap on/off switch. Won't have to open the hood every time.
Two 24" pipes only makes half of a 48" pipe.
Life on the farm!
Mator was a tow Tow truck. You'll need to call him Dump Zilla. Lol
Chain was hooked too high. Hooked it on loader bucket it would have come right out advice for next time always hook At your lowest point too avoid tip overs. Great video
Two 24" culverts won't and will not move as much water as one 48" culvert. What you have is about half, the volume handling you think you have.
With no where to go fast (2x24"culverts) you've built a pond.
If that chain were to break, the guy in the skidsteer could lose his teeth. Raise the bucket a little bit and hook to the chain down loops.
Matt Wilks or take his head off. exactly what I was thinking 🤦♂️ lol
Hay Josh, why do you not get together with a tow truck operator and make a safety video, regarding pulling and lift with straps and chains, there seems to be a good amount of people that are concerned for your safety after watching this vlog. Thanks Dave
Very interesting as always.if your not stuck once a week your not trying hard enough😂.at the start of video u have fallen trees hung up on other one’s be careful if working in the woods.🇮🇪
easy way to get the right belt is you run a measuring tape around the pullies , use that measurement and how many ribs it has and thats your belt , get one the same and all done
Anyone that operates farm or earth moving equipment has gotten stuck. But i will say it's much more enjoyable when you watch someone else on youtube get stuck. The best is watching a 500k JD Farm tractor get stuck. But we feel your pain.
You should of connected to the skid steer down low, your trying to pull it into the stuck instead of out of the stuck, geometry matters
It looks in good shape around here trucks of that era are about completely rusted out
Don’t waste your money on concrete at the creek. 2 things, bigger drainage and more rip rap. I did erosion control work for a living. Start scrounging some big Steel beams build a simple bridge some day.
Never mind Manhattan, you've got a subscriber here who lives in downtown Tokyo! Although I was raised on a hill farm in Wales. 🏴🇯🇵🐑🐂
Cool!
You need to call the skid steer Chuck. That away when it gets stuck again you can cuss it and rhyme. I think it’s called Rip rap
I am hoping you had the dump in low range trying to pull the skid steer out. I can't tell you how many times I have seen someone get stuck doing that. I probably would have chosen a bucket loader instead of the skid steer but that's me.
Roy Davis He has a bucket loader-the JD5065E has a large bucket.
