There is an eery silence as you push your way through the crowd to find an empty place before the sun sets completely. The town square is more than two hundred feet across in any direction and usually filled with merchant stalls and carts and carriages full of merchandise, but not tonight. Tonight the carriages are gone and the stalls are empty to make room for the entire village to gather in one place. The only sound is the laughter of a few children playing in the unusually empty streets; the youngest don't remember the last time the Stranger came, but their parents do and the parents quickly hush their children and shepherd them through the throng.
It's time to begin and you take your seat on the ground. You crane your neck to see him, but can only catch a few glimpses of the hooded figure over the heads of the villagers in front of you. But you remember the last time he came and your heart rushes for a moment as the memory, your first memory, washes over you with renewed clarity. As a babe you were privileged to sit near the front, almost close enough to touch his cloak, and the scents and sounds of that evening fill your mind as you prepare yourself to relive the miracle.
The children have quieted and the village sits patiently. The Stranger stands silent next to the town well. Whether moments pass or hours, you cannot say, but you suddenly become aware of trails of light Mist wafting just over the heads of the assembly. You reach your hand up to touch one and as the Mist curls around your palm you hear the soft, low chant of a thousand tribal Elders welcoming you to their fire. The Mist parts around your fingers, splitting the chant into several harmonies, each dancing in your ears like the Mists overhead.
And then it happens.
*LOUD* and clear, like a church bell on a summer's day, a single Drum beat echoes sharply from the center of the square, snapping your heart to attention. You rise a little to get a look and see only the Stranger, still standing silently next to the well, but the Drumbeat *SOUNDS* again and you feel it reverberate through the ground beneath you. *AGAIN* the Drum pounds through your chest, your heart pounding back to meet it as the square fills with a thousand matched drumbeats from a thousand hearts beating in time.
The Drum beats again and now is joined by the strumming of Lute in harmony with the chanting Elders in the Mist. Every vibration of the Lute sends a shiver through your arms, each muscle seeming to echo the strings in an orchestral dance.
And now you see him. The crowd and the ground and the town have all faded away, leaving you floating alone in the cool wisps of Mist as the Stranger pulls a small wooden Flute from his robes and begins to play. He plays a tune you have never heard, yet so familiar it reminds you of home, and so you begin to hum along matching his song as though from a memory long forgotten.
Filled with this music you dance through the mists, the chanting of the Elders rising and falling with every step. The rest of the villagers slowly fade into view, all of them dancing together - a dance nobody has ever danced but which everybody knows.
The first rays of sunrise peek over the distant hills and slowly the music begins to fade. The Lute softly dies and your feet touch solid ground again. The Flute trails off and your lungs taste the fresh morning air. The Drums beat their last and you see the crowd packed into the town square. And the Mists evaporate taking the chanting of the Elders with them. And you are back where it all began, sitting on the ground filled with the Miracle of the Stranger.
I wish I could more easily come up with vivid lines like these... Thanks for the awesome pictures you drew in my head. And big thanks to Algal for this beautiful tune of course!

I started reading this as the music began and kept going as it played.
It's amazing how the changes in the music seemed to sync almost perfectly as I read it. Intentionally or not, it made this 2x as enjoyable!

_... and in a corner sits a man with a hood, cloaking his face, smoking a pipe. You hear a group of ruffians talk about a map, treasury and orcs. You and your party sits down. The bard is playing a captivating song. The beer is cold and the barmaid's fair. You all feel a longing for adventure. All of a sudden a the door is swung right opened and men in armor walks in. _*_"WE ARE LOOKING FOR OBERSKI"_*_ They look at the Inn keeper, _*_"HAVE YOU SEEN OBERSKI, YOU SON OF A DOG?"_*
