I recently found a Dracaena next to the garage dump. I've never been good with plants, but now that I am retired and have time I love gardening. The dracena was in bad shape. Leaves brown and torn, old dry dirt. I have fully nursed it back to health. It has new foliage growing out of it. Now I need to know how to care for it. I had no idea it was an inside plant but it was thriving on my porch 🤷 I have since brought her in. Your video was the first one to come up. I know this is an older video, but the plant has not changed. Thank you so much 😊👍
I'm so glad that I found your video! I recently brought a large draecena Janet plant and I've watered it only once. After two weeks of watering it I noticed 3 bottom leaves were yellow and most of the leaves now had noticable large brown tips, heartbreaking. I've cut off the yellow leaves along with the brown tips. The next few waterings will be done with distilled water, afterwards I'll move over to rain water. I have the plant under a florescent grow light since my room barely gets natural light. Hi! Thanks for the great info! I just wanted to share some awesome info with you! I keep 2 large show Aquariums with African Cichlids fish. You absolutely cannot find better and nutrient rich water than aquarium water! So I do 80% water changes every week, and the out going water is not only extremely safe for plants, but it is super rich in the minerals that plants need, (Nitrates), and has Zero trace of any harmful minerals, (because it’s also harmful for the fish!), so zero ammonia, fluoride or anything on tap water, because the tap water is conditioned before pouring into the aquarium. So the old aquarium water acts as a very safe light (fish poop) fertilizer and is super rich in Nitrates. All indoor and out door plants THRIVE with aquarium water! I have a few people that come over every week or two, just to collect my old aquarium water for their plants. Hope that helps

Very informative. My mom has had a Dracaena Fragrans since 2015. She left it in my house since June of this year. I guess it loves the bright indirect light in my house because it went from being 5 ft to being almost as tall as my boyfriend who is 6ft. Thank you for this video. Since it has gotten so tall we are afraid to move it so, now it's my plant lol
Our Dracena is about 16 feet tall and about 20 years old. They can get huuuge. But we were able to move it up a steep flight of stairs after repotting it, with 2 people and supporting it carefully.

Checking your tap levels is good to know though. My dracaena has been fine & growing big and strong with tap water. It's also not that easy to get rain water in California always being in a drought :/

My dracenea is over 15 years old and over 10 ft tall ,2 years ago i even got a new shoot from the soil that grew on its own in my pot. i would say that tap water is fine to use , only in case of noticing some damage you should try to get better water.
I can't tell you how many videos I've watched regarding my dracaena fragrans, it has these big beautiful leaves and they are exactly as you described, brown and yellow tips and edges. All this false/misleading info I've received led me to believe I had leaf spot disease but in actual fact its just the water. Thank you so so much honestly!! I will for sure be using a ZeroWater filter just for this plant. :)
Thank you for this video, I’ve had my beautiful large dracaena for years. But seeing this I must apologize I’ve been giving her tap water😭 at least I did notice I don’t need to water her often. One time she almost died because my mom was watering her without me knowing so I had to tell her to stop. She looks much better now. But I’ll definitely catch some rainwater next time.

They put it near my desk and I felt like I had to step up and take care of this because it is so beautiful. It has been close to a year and for some reason I just came across this video after watching others. Yours helped the most!! I now realize its Flouride toxicity that's making it look this way. Also the soil is starting to grow like white spots on top of it. Kinda like webs. People were saying its mold and i have to repot the plant. Can i just re-pot the plant, start using Reverse osmosis/Rain water and start like brand new? I really want to keep her alive!! Agree you should use the best water you can, but I’ve been watering my 20-year old, 16-ft tall Dracena with tap water its entire life. I think it depends on your local tap water. Our tap water is not fluoridated, but is chlorinated (it’s chlorine that off gasses over time, not fluoride). Your plants look great.
if you want a tip on safe fertilizer I found a great video that taught me all about worm castings. If you use those as a top filler once a month it will do wonders for salt senstive plants. I do this with my peace lily, marantas, and mccolley's finale and so to be dracena as well.

I have had trouble with my house plants getting burned by the chemicals in our tap water. I have found that is I use the water that our dehumidifier produces they seem to do just fine. I just have a gallon plastic jug that I refill with the water from the dehumidifier so I always have "safe" water to water my plants with.
I have my Dracaena near the window, and she likes to be watered almost every 6 days. I think i'm going to move her a few feet away.However I live in Arizona and it's March right now so it's pretty dry here.
Our Dracaena has grown so big that I was investigating how to cut (that is what brought me here). I use tap water and instead of watering I water from the bowl below the planter. It drinks the water up quite quickly. I do water weekly and fertilize perhaps once a month (lightly).

Thanks for explaining about your Dracaena. We have had ours for 30 years and it bloomed for the first time this week. We have had to cut it twice. If we pieced it back together, it would be or 30 feet in height. Is it true the plant has reached the end of its life?
Hello I just found your video, I’m starting to buy some plants I have a dracaeca Lisa, I’ve had it for 11/2 weeks and they develop dark spots. I’m listening to your video know I live in Phoenix Az. we don’t have rain water it doesn’t rain much at all. Is bottle water good for the plant? I took a pic of it and the person at Home Depot said I may need to repot it. I did repot and sprayed it with need spray. Seems like I’m still getting brown spots. Not on top only on the bottom. Do you have any suggestions. Thank you.

Blooming flowers? Yay however I recommend cutting them now if not in a couple days because the flowers require a lot of energy and nutrients, meaning they can take that from the rest of the plant. They are beautiful but just consider that before leaving them on for too long
This was a great video. But I’m still unsure what to do for my Dracaena. I recently bought a huge one with multiple. A few weeks later I noticed yellow leaves then leaves browning at the base. I removed from the pot and didn’t see any rotting roots however the stems at the tops are browning with also a white substance… I’m thinking some type of fungus. Do I cut the top of the stems? Or is too late for my plant?
You’ve probably figured it out already lol but I use regular indoor plant miracle grow soil and my dracaena has been thriving for more than three years now. I’m looking up videos because it’s starting to get so tall that it’s leaning. Lol
I have a Dracaena for 40 years in the same pot and the same soil By now it has 4 major trunks and it grows about 2 feet every year. Anyway, for the first time it is blooming. I have never seen that before! Is that normal??
Blooming is not abnormal after so many years. However I have heard and read tons of comments where it is suggested that the blooms on indoor Dracenas be removed since they are unnecessary to indoor plants and drain their energy.

I bought a dracaena 5 years ago and now it is about 4 feet tall, but very top heavy. The new leaves at the top are double the length of the ones at the bottom and its starting to lean. Would giving in a trim fix this?

Fluoride toxicity is very real. My stunning 7' tall Dracaena Janet Craig has suffered tremendously from the effects of chlorine.

I use fish tank water and Dracaena and all other plants do well with it
I never thought to recycle my fish 🐟tank water and use it on my plants 🪴but now I think it's an excellent idea 💡... thanks

I have one that hasn't produced any new growth for 3 years now. It isn't dying just dormant, what can I do to help it?

You do not need to cut the whole leaf.

Its a filtering method. Lots of bottled water is made with reverse osmosis and it should be on the label.
