A Guided Meditation For People Who Think Meditation Is Stupid

  • In this video I attempt to craft a convincing argument in favor of meditation for people who think meditation is stupid. I was introduced to meditation many times by people who had good intentions, but ended up turning me off even more than I had been, essentially because their sales pitch was horrible.
When I finally stuck with meditation for long enough to start seeing results, and without a bunch of condescending moralistic pretense, I did change my mind about it and now meditation is something I do casually a few times a week, and whenever I'm feeling particularly bad.
I created this video because meditation is a useful tool to help curb strong negative feelings, and I feel that most people attempting to explain why someone should meditate really miss the mark. I tried to create the argument that would have gotten me to meditate earlier, or at least to understand a little more about what it is instead of increasing the shroud of mystery and superiority.

I use the Headspace app for all my guided meditations, I like it because it's easy to navigate, has useful animations with analogies that help me understand the mind better, and it's easy to work your way through their beginner courses and then pick topics you're struggling with at the moment. It has a free trial, but then it's $70 a year, which is pricey, so if you're just starting out it might not be the best. www.headspace....

    From my friends:
Calm app: I like Calm because it has a large variety of meditations, is free (with in app purchases), and besides getting to filter and get really specific, you can also pick your background image and sound, so if you want to change between rain and nature noises it's super easy to do.
Insight Timer: I like Insight Timer because it's free and has a huge searchable library with tons of different experts that have uploaded their own meditations. It's easy to search for 20min meditations with a female voice that will help me fall asleep and aren't religious. Then you can filter through all the meditations that fit that criteria and pick out the most highly rated and most listened to.

It doesn't matter if it is smart or stupid. If it works, people will do it. The reason why people dont meditate is because it doesn't work. it is simple

This was so refreshing. I’m 38yo, 5-6 weeks into my first pregnancy in the dead of Iowa winter. I wish I could go into cryosleep until a miscarriage or my initial prenatal appointment, whichever comes first. This straightforward video about a valid practice, stripped of all the fluff that surrounds it in the West, is a more practical option.

Ty so much for this comment! I really hope the best thing possible happens for you, and yes the fluff turned me off for so long. The book “the Buddhist brain” which is written by a neurologist was my first intro into this stuff if you’re interested.
