  • There are a bazillion types of scams out there today and in this video we discuss one person's experience with a Romance Scam and how it empowered her to fight back!! Darlene Petrie started Scam Prevention International - a business to educate and inform everyone so that they don't get scammed.
Scam Prevention International’s (SPI) mission is to ensure a seamless and secure online experience for internet users by providing education and awareness of how to identify and prevent threats from scammers.
    The services we provide include:
Educational workshops and seminars to learn about the most common type of scams, as well as current scams, how to recognize them, and how to protect yourself.
Follow up assistance: We provide one to one, counselling if you have reported being scammed, check on you, and provide additional assistance, if needed.
Support groups: We provide an online support group to allow you to share your experiences and receive emotional support so you know you are not alone.
We know, victims of online scams are often too embarrassed to come forward. However, the more of these incidents that are reported, the more people will know they are not alone, law enforcement will have a better chance of shutting down the perpetrators, and the more aware others will be of the dangers lurking online.
Victims suffer in silence. If you are a victim or suspect someone is a victim, contact us ASAP.

I wish the dating sites, especially Facebook, would take this more seriously. I can't tell you the number of people that I've reported and they never do anything. The scammers are careful not to ask for money while on that platform. Once someone is talked into trusting the scammer, it is too late!

@cnl3977, good for you for reporting the people that are scammers! I agree with you. Facebook doesn't do anything until after the fact. It kind of reminds me of when the police can't arrest an abusive husband until he's already beat his wife and the damage is already done. 😢

A red flag for sure. A person should not move of the site because the scammers will have you go to a site that they can’t be traced on. Before you switch have a few video conversations.

I'm not sure if you follow any scambaiters or not but the woman from Romance Scammers and Online Scams is amazing! She extraordinarily good with technical stuff and has a feel for getting to the scammers most annoying core. She does a couple of voices/personalities (like a single older lady taking care of her family estate as well as a cashier at the local grocery store and an 85 year old woman). She is cunning and down right hilarious and has a real feel for how to attack the scammers where it hurts--and they are all real scammers. She has written a few books that are fictional but really very interesting. Most of her videos are in a series so be sure you start with the first episode.I am glued to UA-cam until the next one comes out (every other day). She has a few videos that are strictly information. Again...on UA-cam and her channel is Romance Scammers and Online Scams. It is entertaining but extremely educational as well. She lives in England and has that English accent that I love to listen to.

Thank you @sophieswan8816, for your knowledge and sharing. You are absolutely right! Scammers have gotten very good with using AI in video calls. Thank you @coffeeconnectionspodcast for asking. Some of the signs will include the lips-are they moving to the words the person is saying. Is it a video chat they are doing where you are talking back and forth or is it just a video they are using? The video chat needs to be a two way conversation. Ask them to show you around the room they are in. Is their voice consistent to where they say they are from, or do they have an accent. The scammers may keep a dark screen and keep saying his/her camera isn’t working. Don’t accept that. Also, when they ask for personal information, money, gift cards cryptocurrency don’t send them anything, no matter what the reason. Ask yourself, “Do I want to be in a relationship with someone who is asking me for money?”

Wow! you have such good advice! I often share videos like this with friends and ask them to watch.
Knowledge is the best way to prevent it from going any further. Sometimes they will admit what they are doing and play the 'poverty' card and say that they do this because where they live (usually Nigeria) has no opportunities for them and they haven't eaten in a week. How it is that makes it okay for them to scam other people is beyond me. I was wasting a scammers time one day and he admitted to who he is but then he claimed that he had a STD, had no money to go to the doctor and his manly parts (for lack of a better word) were on fire and he can't do anything about it until he has some money.
Don't let anybody with that type of scheme soften your stance...trust me, they all have an angle! I have heard from people who met their victim in all sorts of places...book clubs, bars (and you just don't remember them), gaming platforms, puppies for sale, house rental etc...Please ladies...they just aren't real people and they really do not have your best interest in mind! I'm looking forward to more videos!

@@darlenepetrie6932 I will think about it...I do know of another one that has touched my life and caused an uproar in my own family. We were almost the victim of that scam where a 'lawyer' calls a grandparent to say that their grandchild is in jail and needs thousands of dollars to get out...they usually have a story, in our case, it was that my nephew had been taking cough syrup and hit a pregnant woman in his car and she was in medical trouble at the hospital. The lawyer convinced my mom that she needed to get thousands of dollars to this lawyer before they actually release him from waiting to jail. It went far enough that my mom went and got cash out of the bank but thanks to a tracker on my nephew's phone...we caught it before the deed was done. I knew before anyone else that it was a scam but I was terrified that he was being kidnapped and the $ would be ransom. Thank God he was just at the park having a picnic with his girlfriend. This scam is so prevalent that it has become a movie! I really really enjoy doing a little amateur scam baiting online but it can go wrong quickly so i wouldn't particularly recommend it. @seed1252, thank you for asking. Often people don't want to talk about scams or share information about scams. I greatly appreciate your question. At Scam Prevention International, we help people in many ways, but mostly on a personal basis. Being a victim of a romance scam is very heartbreaking and brings about so many emotions. It can also be financially draining. We usually talk to the victim on a one-to-one basis. We usually connect through direct messaging and then switch to video calls. Depending on where the person lives we also connect through WhatsApp. We provide one-to-one counseling, support individuals in reporting the scam, and periodically check in on them. We provide education and awareness on how to identify a scam, how to avoid being scammed, what to do if someone is being scammed. We also help victims talk to their families to let them know they have been scammed. Reporting being scammed is very important, so we will help the victim go through the process of reporting. Depending when the victim was scammed, if recent, we will refer them to an organization that works on getting funds back - but keep in mind this very rarely happens. If you would like to connect, you can direct message me on Facebook, Scam Prevention International Facebook page.

I was on my way to the hospital to visit my son who was in a bad accident last week and broke his back and is paralyzed but on a side note I'm praying that God will undertake and overcome.
So as I said I'm driving to the hospital and taking an off-ramp which goes around in a circle and I see the there's a vehicle pulled over and a guy is trying to flag down some people so I pulled up behind the vehicle and the guy came to my door and he's got a strong accent and he says oh could you please help me I'm trying to get to the airport to go to Saudi Arabia any shows me his family photos on his phone of people in Saudi Arabia and he tells me that he lost his wallet and he doesn't have any money and I said well what's wrong with your vehicle and he says I'm out of gas and so I had recently gotten paid cash by a client and so I had some cash in my wallet and pulled out a 50 and handed it to him and he was so thankful. And then he shows me a necklace a real expensive-looking gold chain necklace around his neck and offers to sell it to me for $200 and I said I'm sorry I don't have $200 and he says well give me your business card so I gave him my business card and he said he would email me now as I'm driving away I'm thinking is he doing that to everybody that drives by and just makes a ton of money? So all afternoon when I would get phone calls from numbers I don't know I expected to be the king of Saudi Arabia thanking me and asking for my bank account number so he can deposit a trillion dollars LOL 😂

Very interesting . . . 🤔
My question is this: If she is having a relationship with an AI bot and everything is PERFECT, later on down the road when she needs real human contact and love, will a mere human being suffice?? Will they be able to live up to her newly acquired expectations???

People changing who they naturally are in order to take advantage of a weaker counter-part. Very sad!!! @lynnparrish1335, how do WE start this awakening? 🤔

@sheilagadde5975, I appreciate your feedback but until someone has been in the other person's shoes, I don't think we can put words in their mouth, or try to take them out of their mouth. Often when we are trying to convey an emotional experience, we can't do it in only one or two words.
And I don't expect them to. I guess that's why there's different strokes for different folks.

@sheilagadde5975 thank you for your comment. I wanted to add that when a friend or anyone tells you they are connected to someone on line and you think it’s a scammer, please be patient with them. Be empathetic and continue to talk to them. I know it can be frustrating if they don’t listen to what you are saying. If you need support to support a friend you can contact me and I will provide assistance. Our friends need us.

@deborahc.9869, apparently she realizes she allowed herself to be scammed but she's doing something about it, Sista!! And you should be happy about it because she's making people like you and me aware of how easy it is to be duped! So maybe be thankful instead of critical 😜

@lindamcdermott2205, thank you for your support of Darlene! She is a very genuine and caring lady, and doesn't deserve to be criticized for sharing her story for others to learn from so they don't fall for the same type of scam. You are very kind!

She has problems giving direct, simple "yes or no" answers. Take 2 paragraphs to say "Yes",.

@@terijo2504I believe everyone who feels they need to talk through a trauma should have that opportunity and right. Empathy is usually the best way to support victims. For those who don’t want to hear it, they to have the opportunity to walk away, preferably with not leaving negative words.

@@terijo2504 I know for a fact that Darlene has a lot going on in her life including family, friends, and colleagues, and she is not starved for attention. Some people may be and that's why they may fall for a scammer's fake adoration, but not in this instance. As you watch the podcast you will hear and see that Darlene was reluctant to pursue a conversation with him.
