Tricky navigation and the most narrow pass ever, into Maupihaa atoll, Ep 34 Hilma Sailing

- According to the charts the water around Bora Bora were to shallow for us but we wanted to go to the other side to snorkel so we tried anyway. The tiny passage into Maupihaa was scary! 1 knots one way, 11 knots the other way but we made it and we loved that atoll.
We hope you will enjoy it!

So so beautiful! Thank you❤
Most yachts wait for top or bottom of the tide (slack-water) to get in and out of these atols, if your lose your engine things can get out of control very quickly with such big currents and no room to move.
So do we. ☺️ The thing about Maupihaa is that slack-water never occurs. It is a very "special" atoll with constant ebbing current but it went fine so that was good. 😊
Thank you Lisa and Oskar for the beautiful images and fun adventures!! I notice and really appreciate your respect for the nesting birds and eggs. Be careful washing off the back of the boat. I have seen two occasions where guys got their hands bit by fish coming from under the boat. One was a barracuda, and the other was a little reef shark! I very much enjoy your videos and personalities!
Thank you so much for watching and for your nice comment. 🙂 We too think it is important to pay respect for the animals. :) We will be careful with the back of the boat. That would be really scary!! 🙂
I’m so envious of your travels. Such a beautiful part of the world!
😊 Yes, it really is beautiful in the Pacific. We are a bit sad that it is now over.. ;) About the dinghy motor in the "rudder incident". It is hard to catch on video, but the waves were away to big (especially when there were a few squalls) and if we would have been able to mount the engine it would have been dipped in the ocean and damaged right away. We will answer to as many questions as possible in a future episode. The one with the rudder was an extra episode but we are very late with the video production, sorry. 🤦🏼♀️😊
The next ones will be about Wallis, Tuvalu and Kiribati.. Then we will show videos from Majuro and the following videos after the rudder incident. 😀
Hi, just found your channel and I have enjoyed it very much. Great job with the lost rudder and those episodes. Looking forward to watching more of your adventures.
Thanks for the great videos!
Very nice to be in this super paradise island, many thanks guys good quality video. Good luck always to you guys from my the heart.

Thank you so much!!! 🙂🤗
Great series to watch.
Thank you!
Ah so beautiful and looked like you were making nice speed on the passage 👍🏻
Thank you Mike and yes, that went fast!! 🙂 ⛵️💨
Love all the coral shots! Great video!
Thank you! ☺️
It's special when you can watch the whales for a while, dolphins are great too😊
I'd be a bit nervous around the coral when the current is strong, and not much room to manoeuvre, but you did a good job with no trouble at all👍
All the best, see you next time😊
It really is! 😊
Yes, that was a bit nervous. A very "special" atoll with constant ebbing current but it went fine so that was good. 😊
Entertaining videos...nice underwater coverage! Enjoy the music too ;)
Thank you very much! We are glad that you enjoyed it! 🙂
Hello Hilma Dudes, Another Great video, that first passage was tough with the High tide washing out. There's been a bunch of You Tube Cruisers in this vicinity the past few weeks. It certainly stacks up as a top 5 must visit location. It's going to be hard to find the next location that's better than this. Thanks for sharing your fine adventure with us, Love Y'all
Thank you very much! Yes, this place was amazing and there are many places we hope to be able to revisit sometime in the future. The constant current was a bit scary though. 😊
Awesome ❤️
Thanks! 🙂
I always enjoy your videos, it doesn’t hurt that you are in paradise!!
Crazy currents, I couldn’t do that entry with my fat full keel sailboat 🙈 but you guys have a slick bottom with a lot less drag than mine 🙂
The whales towards the end were amazing and the dog was really cute 🤗
Cheers 🍻,looking forward to the next one and thank you for sharing guys!!
Andy
We are glad that you do. 🙂 Yes it was a scary passage but there are many other beautiful places to visit too if you don't want to go in there Like you say, paradise-places in the Pacific.🙂
Thank you so much for watching! Take care and sail safe! 🤗
Thanks for the beautiful whales and sharks💞💞🇨🇦
Thanks for watching! 🙂
Great vid ya'll.
Thank you!
❤
Up where I sail the water is black (puget sound, pacific northwest, USA). When we draw near 6ft I don't dare go anywhere with less than 10ft of water under the hull. Granted we have to factor in the tide swings as well (which can be up to 12 feet change in depth in just a few hours).
Great video! You have more nerve than me.... those tidal streams looked impassable. A lot of planning and preparation and a decent pilot book I guess. Well, done! How effective is the hydro-generator? We're investing in lots of solar panels and hadn't considered these.
Thank you very much! It was a bit scary but worth it and there is much information about this place in the books. 🙂 We also spoke to some other sailors, that were inside the lagoon, via the VHF before we went in so that was good too. 🙂
is there anything left of SMS Seeadler?
Väldigt lika pojkarna, detta måste vara en broder? Kanske framgår men jag har inte följt med så noga. Spännande passage in och ut i lagunen. Ha det bra.
Are reef sharks and black tip sharks the same thing?
Yes, black tip is a kind of reef shark :)
Just catching up with your grate videos. I had to giggle at you this time. Have to leak (pee) on the other sided. Not to have a look on the other sided. Doing a good job, but your big sub's are up to short in time, let them stay up a bit longer us slow readers, or better speak in English which you both do well. Thanks Lars.
😃 Thank you, We'll try to make them longer so that you have time to read them. We are so use to subtitles in Sweden so we probably forget it :) Sometimes when it is just the two of us we speak Swedish. We try to speak English as much as we can but sometimes we can't find the words or just feel uncomfortable so then it's easier in the native language. But we will think about both that and also to make the subs longer in the future. 😊👍🏼 Thank you! 😊
GoPro still has shit sound.
Yep.🙂 Since then we have ordered a new one and a mic (since the ocean took our last one) so hopefully it's better in those videos.
How about giving the patreons some value for their money contributions?
We have talked about that. 🙂 Now when we have left the Pacific we think it will be easier. Do you have any suggestion? 🙂
Very beautiful 😍👍
