@Kabr0ne I got through on nightmare mode, and have been caught in the walls, stuck on the railings, had blood punch not activate only to throw me into a demon mosh pit you can’t escape from so many times I finally uninstalled after beating the dlc after a few more runs on nightmare, both before and after the buffed and possessed marauder. I’ll reinstall later like when the second dlc drops, but when dashing off a ledge causes the level to vanish after a short set distance the issues with dlc including random invisible walls blocking your shots shows it’s got issues. I actually loved the UAC level due to Doom 2016’s atmosphere, the blood swamps obscuring your vision, and the Holt’s blood maykers/drones because I didn’t have to spam chainsaw, but goddamn it’s got many issues and very few people actually acknowledge it.
@@princetchalla2441 Ya, I feel ya bro. Now that gameplay is being pushed to this high level the bugs in combat (which aren’t super common or anything) have gotten very annoying. Every time I tried to glory kill something and wasted a charge of my Blood Punch I wanted to uninstall.
I can definitely see the issues with the "kick in the dick" challenges, but I'm the type that *lives for the challenge* outside of some janky arenas and the fact you cant punch a shark, this DLC is exactly what I wanted
Most likely, he did post a video where the thumbnail outright spoiled the ending like an idiot. His content is cringey for the most part though, so I try to avoid it. On top of this I've noticed a couple of youtubers who won't accept most criticisms as valid because its their own GOTY. Eternal is great but blind fanboyism isn't.
@Alex A I remember once getting some of his channel stuff recommended, thought about subscribing, and then he has something akin to "New DLC trailer" as prominent header, far before this DLC was announced, and not at all with a trailer. That's not an accident, or even an enthusiastic pitch, that was a blatantly false lie of a clickbait that I told him off for and have since refused and disinterested any of his videos coming through. The Doom fanbase deserves better than that guy.
15:09 spotted that Terminator reference... but yeah, whoever came up with the fog parts of Blood Swamps clearly has to be a masochist. That was terrible, especially with the possessed Arachnotron shooting at you nonstop. I thought that was hard... until the double Tyrants 😖
That fog section is easy. -Flame+Granade the Terminator mofos -Lock on the Arachnotron 3x times. -As you are Ghost Busting the Spirit throw an ice bomb to freeze the invisible Specter Pinkies. -After killing the Spirit dealing with Pinkies comes easy. -Doom Hunter is the easiest part of the encounter.Granade+Blood Punch+Blood Punch+Ballista+SSG.His "And a FUCKING DOOM HUNTER" reaction is blow out of proportion as they are the least dangerous of the Super Heavy Demons and the easiest to dispatch in a fight.
"These areas in the Blood Swamps are crappy level design and are just hard for the sake of being hard." Me eating Master Levels for breakfast: "Ah, I see you're new here."
That home alone part never gets old And spoiler ahead The new update made the last level slayer gate contain a possessed marauder without telling us cus we were bitching about the slayer gate being too easy
WHAT?!?! I had no idea, I beat UN already and tbh the slayer gates were really easy, the arenas let you escape pretty much all it threw at you, but now theres a possessed marauder?? Fuck ya!
"Near the end of the level, you have to take on two Marauders at once" I literally said "child's play" out loud. Master Level Super Gore Nest in Nightmare does things to you.
Doom then:fight Demons on a base on Mars Doom now:travel to other dimensions into other civilization and an SCP-esc organization on a post-apocalyptic Earth to kill the Devil who was you the whole time
Since the last update (Super gore nest master level) they secretly rework the slayer gate in the 3rd level of the DLC and now possessed marauder is in the last wave, so feel free to relaunch and discover the fight against this big boy you will not be disapointed.
"not being able to see what is attacking me is where the difficulty comes from, not from the enemies out maneuvering me or outsmarting me, but just the fact that I quite literally cannot see them". Dude I thought you loved Doom 3
i have a tip. take this from a nightmare player. try playing something like hurt me plenty. trust me its a whole lot more fun on higher difficulties and yeah when you switch difficulties you ARE going to die alot. that's just part of any game and getting better. except DOOM is built around helping you get better and master the combat. i started on hurt me plenty and i had alot of fun and then i switched to ultra violence. i died ALOT on ultra violence. untill i started really practicing and soon i wasnt dying much at all on ultra violence. so i jumped to nightmare and i died alot and got better really fast. it made me better at alot of other games too. i now have beaten the game on nightmare twice and the dlc on nightmare. i beat all the master levels on nightmare and playing doom eternal is the most fun thing ever for me. i did this all in only 3 WEEKS and 86 hours of play. never underestimate yourself and always try to get better. good luck man! 💜
@@svnark Well, thank you for the vote of confidence and a very wholesome reply! 😄 I couldn't resist TAG so I went and got it - absolutely more difficult than the base game, but not undoable, even for me. (Touch wood - haven't reached the end yet! 😅) I am playing at the easiest setting, tho. I've played shooters for decades, but never really mastered the quick reactions needed to excel in games like DE. But, maybe I'll give 'nightmare' a go, you kinda inspired me ;)
This dlc is the Dark Souls 2 of Doom. Add more enemies. Make it harder to move around environments/cram players into tight spaces. It's just cheap artificial difficulty most of the time.
The DLC for the most part is pretty fair aside from a few arenas being a bit too small for its own good. But it's nothing like the level of unfair difficulty of Dark Souls 2.
The updated holy slayer gate was the one section that was just too much for me on UV. Was stuck on it for months before i finally just had to let go and lower the difficulty for that section
I really enjoyed it. But I did find it a bit of an unforgiving torture just for the sake of it. It’s really not for the casual gamer IMO. Great review Gman
I got filtered by Ancient Gods, not because of the difficulty but because my game kept crashing after the Blood Swamps forcing me to redo the Trial of Maligog over and over. I beat it three times and the game crashed three times and I gave up. Bethesda's legendary QA at work.
Reading you i dunno WTF you are talking about... because it seems like for you your own misery is what you takes fun from... Another DS / DE player ...
That possessed tyrant sequence at the end only killed me twice. If you stay on the bridge and bottleneck them towards you, it's not too hard to get a bunch of hits on them.
Yeah this DLC was brutal, like times 10 or so. A lot of things caught me off guard and that ending, my God, that ending. I won't say anything but when you put the pieces together and realize that it all makes sense, it makes it all the more mind blowing. Now we wait for part two, calmly, recovering, till the time comes once more......TO RIP AND TEAR!!!
This DLC is what DLC should be. No micro transactions, decent length, and excellent gameplay. But man, is it brutal. Played it on ultra violence and still died a lot, especially when the spirits show up. If you are able to beat this on nightmare Gman, my hats off to you. I’ve tried starting the base game on nightmare and it’s definitely a jump in difficulty. Clearly is meant for players who’ve played the game multiple times beforehand.
That fog area with the possessed arachnotron is actually pretty easy if you Meathook jump out of the fog to an upper area. From there just snipe them till they die.
I love how this game makes you prioritize different enemies in different orders. Like, when an Archvile shows up, you need to deal with it IMMEDIATELY and with EXTREME PREJUDICE
Surprised you didn't mention the music at all, but I really liked this review as always. Just the right amount of "your mum" jokes coupled with an unbiased opinion from a person that knows how to play the game, unlike some journalists that seem to drag their face across the keyboard and pretend that's good enough.
Pro tip: only use the microwave beam for that pesky possessed arachnotron in blood swamps, pretty much the only way to get it on nightmare, just make sure you have enough ammo to kill the demon, or just pray that it possesses a low level demon and GTFO to higher ground before the triad of invisible pinkies spawns. Died like 40 times before getting it down
Personally, I would disagree about the fog sections from the blood swamps since it encourages you to be more careful about your surroundings and maybe it is only just me, but I didn't really even find it to be difficult either since you could see enemy shields and projectiles flashing which gives away their position. I thought that it was a cool idea that there's a fog that's messing with your view with only either projectiles as source of visibility or by closing the distance because it forces you to adapt for the current situation. I am not saying that it should be a common thing however, I believe that it can be done at least once in two levels or something because Slayer forbid that there would also be a buff totem nearby while this is happening which is where I could see your point. I totally agree about the encounter on the holt before the final boss though, Its really a pain in the ass especially if your own mouse has the double-click curse at the right mouse button making the spirits even more of a pain in the dong to kill before they possess the doom hunter and annihilate your soul. Just my opinion though, thanks for reading anyways if anyone even reads this.
The third slayer gate is the most annoying thing ever made, you are fighting a possessed marauder in the "third wave" let's cal it, being blocked constantly by 3 energy walls at any given time and a minimum of 10 fodder demons constantly trying to give you a love tap... That whole slayer gate is the work of the ACTUAL devil. And to get to that point, you have to fight off 3 archviles, then 2 hunters and all that in a super small arena where you almost can't even dodge some attacks. I give my respect to those who beat it in ultra-nightmare.
@cool cool id software isn't abandoning "true hardcore fans" by taking a less grounded art direction. Yes, it's cartoony, but so is Doom 1 and especially 2. Both classics have bright ass colors and cheesy demon designs. Sequels don't have to be directly like their predecessors. Both 2016 and Eternal are great games in their own respect, but I don't think it's fair to come out and say Eternal is mediocre simply because they double down on the violent-slapstick and cheesiness of the classics. I get it, I prefer 2016's atmosphere too, but atmosphere alone shouldn't be enough to ruin the game for you. Does it impact gameplay, the most important aspect of any videogame? No it doesn't.
@cool cool Well death animations were cut to save on resources but I get it, not a huge fan of the goofy tone either. 2016 was definitely more brutal. Developers overused the Doomblade in Eternal’s glory kills, which I guess led it to feel less, violent? Lot more slicing, less ripping and tearing. Even so, the game is still pretty gory. The recent update that came with the DLC also increased the amount of blood decals on demons. They get covered in the stuff now. Truly I think it was the grittiness of 2016 that made it feel more 'mature'. There's still a tone of slapstick in that game. Even small details like a Cacodemon laughing at you if they get a hit on ya'. But while 2016 did atmosphere, tone and storytelling better, I think Eternal massively improved upon its gameplay, and for me, that’s what matters most.
@Nimrod Falcon The classics were deliberately cheesy. Just reread some of the in-text exposition segments. You can’t tell me that’s supposed to be taken seriously. Sure, the original intention was action horror (as said by Carmack), and many people did find it scary at the time, but that doesn’t mean the game was meant to be taken seriously. Com’on, (originally) the main reason you destroy the forces of Hell is because they killed your pet rabbit. If that isn’t cheesy to you, then I don’t know what is. Look, there’s just so many small details to list that show the Developers never intended these games to be taken with a grounded tone. The giddy grin Doomguy gets when he picks up a new weapon, the small text popups that happen when you go to exit the game, the fact that some demons even have anuses on their sprites (a real wtf moment there) ect. If you don’t believe me, just go watch some interviews featuring John Romero.
I literally don't understand complaining about the platforming. At worst it gets you from place to place, and at best it's kind of fun to jump through certain levels. I'd rather have platforming than a bunch of boring hallways.
Never have I been so early to a GmanLives video. I'm not even sitting on the toilet yet, but already watching on the way there. What a time to be alive.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that some of these sections lasted too long. And like you said once I got it done I wasn't happy more so "finally its over!". But only for those few sections the majority of the DLC is nice. Also some advice against the turrets. Just use the ballista with the attachment that uses the wide charge up shot, charge it to level two or three and let it got. It'll one tap the turrets.
Yeah, I think I know the youtuber who ruined the ending, as he has ruined mine too. I blocked his channel so I might at least not get spoilers on the part 2.
I’m one of those people who sadly thought Doom Eternal was a step back from Doom 2016. It tried to cram in way too many new mechanics that left it feeling bloated and confusing when all we really want from a Doom game is to rip & tear. I get that some people enjoy having to think about every single move they make, should they use a glory kill, the blood punch, the freeze thing, the fire thing, the grappling hook yada yada yada, when all I wanted to do was shoot monsters in the face with a shotgun. When I’ve been working hard all day I want to come home and switch OFF my brain, not ON; Is that too much to ask??
The thing is, Doom Eternal does not force these things entirely. The mechanics added here are just helpful tools for more effective gameplay, but it's still fairly flexible. Especially on lower difficulties, so if you want to switch your brain OFF after work, the solution is to lower the difficulty, not just dumb it down for everyone. Quick-swapping and weak-points do not have to be followed religiously. Maybe they do become more important on Nightmare or Ultra-Nightmare, but as long as you don't use the same 1 or 2 weapons and manage resources (especially with an almost infinite chainsaw), then you're good. I'm not trying to get you to like this game more than Doom 2016, that game is awesome without a doubt, but I'm just saying that once you get Eternal's groove, it doesn't require as much thinking as you believe.
Possessed demons dont actually have double health nor do they deal extra damage. The main difference is that they are faster and have specifc resistances to certain weapons (mainly ballista lol)
"You're not allowed to say anything about the game unless you play nightmare." Even as someone who plays only on nightmare, that sounds very authoritarian. Taking inspiration from the Chinese, I see.
Spirit possessed Marauders ARE something that can happen, according to the game’s code. Meaning it’s something we’ll see happen legitimately in part 2.
Good review but I don’t agree with your opinion on the level design. I think that’s more of your own personal opinion. To me, I think the game is tryna make you adapt to new gameplay because the gameplay changes when the environments change, as you know. But fair enough.
I really love the doom eternal and the dlc, i played the basegame first on UV and then nightmare and holy shit did i get my ass beat in the DLC with nightmare, eventually soldiering through it, i enjoyed every bit of it, i feel like a giant asshole douche for saying this but DOOM Eternal and the DLC's are the dark souls of FPS, dialed to 11.
When a game from 2020 simulates the draw distance of a PS1 game from 1995. Otherwise, this DLC looks ball-bustingly hard, and i can't wait to experience it :D. Thanks for sharing Gman.

The Doom fanbase deserves better than that guy.

the difficulty gatekeeping is just silly.

Thank you for your honesty. As someone who beat Eternal on "I'm too young to die", this isn't going to be for me 😅
i have a tip. take this from a nightmare player. try playing something like hurt me plenty. trust me its a whole lot more fun on higher difficulties and yeah when you switch difficulties you ARE going to die alot. that's just part of any game and getting better. except DOOM is built around helping you get better and master the combat. i started on hurt me plenty and i had alot of fun and then i switched to ultra violence. i died ALOT on ultra violence. untill i started really practicing and soon i wasnt dying much at all on ultra violence. so i jumped to nightmare and i died alot and got better really fast. it made me better at alot of other games too. i now have beaten the game on nightmare twice and the dlc on nightmare. i beat all the master levels on nightmare and playing doom eternal is the most fun thing ever for me. i did this all in only 3 WEEKS and 86 hours of play. never underestimate yourself and always try to get better. good luck man! 💜

But it's nothing like the level of unfair difficulty of Dark Souls 2.
ive been playing for hours on ultra violence and im still on the first level haha. This DLC is brutal, but honestly would you want it another way?

I really enjoyed it. But I did find it a bit of an unforgiving torture just for the sake of it. It’s really not for the casual gamer IMO. Great review Gman

I got filtered by Ancient Gods, not because of the difficulty but because my game kept crashing after the Blood Swamps forcing me to redo the Trial of Maligog over and over. I beat it three times and the game crashed three times and I gave up. Bethesda's legendary QA at work.
I wish more devs understood the difference between "hard for the sake of fun" and "hard for the sake of misery."
Reading you i dunno WTF you are talking about... because it seems like for you your own misery is what you takes fun from...

The Rain doesn’t remove the blood on the Bloodstained Shotgun 7/10
The Ancient Gods makes Doom Eternal look like Doom 3 in terms of pacing.
best expansion pack/DLC since Wolfenstein The Old Blood and Half Life Opposing Force
This guy may be a Doom fan. I'm not sure...
@cool cool that’s why it’s nominated for game of the year and one of the highest rated games of the year. Sit down. It’s a great game and DLC.
@cool cool "Forgettable music by Andrew Hushult"
You have to be trolling, that guy's a fucking boss at music.
I literally don't understand complaining about the platforming. At worst it gets you from place to place, and at best it's kind of fun to jump through certain levels. I'd rather have platforming than a bunch of boring hallways.
I asked him if he would be reviewing it, and he was like maybe, so you're welcome guys..

Same. It's one this to say "dont watch this video it contains spoilers" it's another to put the spoiler IN THE FUCKING THUMBNAIL
Most of yhe resistances are at least 34%. The rule of thumb is really just use rocket launcher and chaingun lol
Finally I found a person who thinks the difficulty of this dlc is actually not a bad thing.
While being wellcrafted we should be worried about the escalation of system game design bloat in DOOM.
I agree with rain in levels. We need more of them.
Also appreciate the Terminator reference.
"You're not allowed to say anything about the game unless you play nightmare."
Even as someone who plays only on nightmare, that sounds very authoritarian.
I like how you edited the sponsorship like the rest of your video
I really love the doom eternal and the dlc, i played the basegame first on UV and then nightmare and holy shit did i get my ass beat in the DLC with nightmare, eventually soldiering through it, i enjoyed every bit of it, i feel like a giant asshole douche for saying this but DOOM Eternal and the DLC's are the dark souls of FPS, dialed to 11.

I feel the fog section with the possessed arachnotron is fair because there are ways to avoid the fog by jumping onto the cliff above the area, then you can stay in the air and shoot down at the spectres and doom hunter.
It's really interesting to see each person's different experience. Love your videos and dropped you a like, but I would hesitate to say a part is hard because you had trouble with it.
