Teenager's First Hours in Juvenile Detention

  • From our Archive: Viewers on our channel have watched the story of Morris and his time in juvenile detention and court. Morris was arrested on a bench warrant for failing to appear at a previous court hearing. A drug test earlier in the day also revealed he was high during his arrest. In this video, we see Juvenile Intake Officer, Liz, field a call from Morris's mom after Morris has been booked into juvie, then watch as Morris and his mother have a frank conversation now that he's landed back in detention for the second time. During the call, Liz explains the visitation process and goes over what Morris's mom needs to know before his court hearing in a few days.
Once the intake process is complete, it's time for Morris to be escorted to the detention center cell pods, where he will join dozens of other kids who are also detained and waiting for their day in court. It's not unusual for kids who wind up in detention to ask our camera crew and producers what they can expect once they're processed into the cell pods. This video shows the process from beginning to end -- from the pat down at intake to the kids playing cards in the cell pod to the showering-in process where everyone must wash their hair with a disinfectant to prevent lice.
Note: Following his court hearings, Morris was court ordered to a placement facility where he lived for a period of time and received counseling and services. He eventually ran away from the facility. A few years later, he served time in adult prison for robbery and was released.

I went to juvie for a time when I was 14, and I can tell you that I was literally fighting for my life every day while I was in the Roy, which is the main juvenile hall in Toronto. I learned for the first week or so that you’re in there, don’t make friends with anyone that’s friendly because they’re just trying to size you up like they do with all the new fish. When you get in a fight, go for the guy’s knees, especially if he’s bigger than you since most big dudes have vulnerable knees

The phone call between him and his mom 😞 It's just sad, and unfair. Sounds like she is a good mom who does her best and it wasn't enough to keep him out of trouble, and he's probably a good kid. But when u live in the environment his neighborhood is in, it is extremely difficult to not get caught up in some foolishness, and peer pressure is a mf-er

In the beginning of the video, if I had a mom like that, I would make her as proud as I could. I could never mess up and go to prison.... ever.
It makes me realize how lucky I am to have grown up with a support system in place on all fronts that would totally prevent any of this from happening to me.

I was in Juvenile Detention when I was 14, from November 2000 to January 2001. It was in somewhat of a suburban setting and the facility was quite a bit smaller than this. It was a fair mix of blacks, whites, and hispanics. There were no fights amongst the inmates and everything was pretty organized. To be honest it was not that bad of an experience. I just read a a lot of books and we watched a lot of BET on the TV (not my favorite, I'm white BTW). We had some time out to go in the "rec yard" which just consisted of like a couple basketball hoops enclosed by a chainlink fence with barbed wire, once a day. The food was decent. There was a separate female wing and every now and then we would cross paths, but if we looked at the females we would get in trouble and I remember one time I accidentally looked and was confined to my room the rest of the day. Also one time I played a joke and hid under my bed when the guards were going around checking on everyone in their rooms (we had rooms enclosed by doors, not open with bars on them) to make them think I escaped. Needless to say they weren't amused and I was confined to my room for the remainder of that day, too. All in all I met some interesting people and I almost look at that time with nostalgia.

I've been in politics for over 20 years and having been on the inside of it, I can tell you I honestly think its going to take a different generation in charge in this country before people get sick of how these teens are treated. Most likely the millennials. MY generation, the sub 'jones generation' made up of younger boomers and older gen xers who currently run the country are known for being quite hateful and very devoid of empathy towards anyone not in their own family. They have SO much hate. Their attitude is 'better safe than sorry and keep them locked up' rather than spend the money or the time to get to the root causes of these young guys troubles and actually try to HELP them. Who do you think keeps passing all these laws making longer prison sentences, mandatory minimums and more things are a crime today than ever before? Its because rather than DEAL with the problems, we want to just put them away in lockup instead.
There ARE good politicians out there like me. But the reality is, we have to deal with and work within the system. And the system doesn't like elected or appointed officials who rock the boat. So we don't get all that far sadly.

Mann the whole system is messed up inside out. I think I've seen almost every single video this channel has uploaded. I'm thankful for this channel cause it shows the reality of teens in this world. Me growing up in Chicago been through all of this. Many of these teens life story are different but in this case I really see an innocent child. I dont know how can people say his mom loves him I am not easily gullible I have watched when he went to court and his mom testify only a few will know what im talking about. A mom that cares will move out the hood go to school pursue a career or even get a basic retail job. Just pray that these kids get their life together cause once they step inside those cells its no going back those are real live demons that waiting for you to devour your soul.

    • @fredocdc173

Most of these mothers are single and been through enough hardships. However, I just dont know how easy is for them to turn them into the system rather than them getting right with their child. This should be the last resort while heading down this way. God bless!

Appreciate you taking the time to watch our videos @Fredo CDD and posting your comment. You're right -- all the issues kids deal with, whether it be trauma at home, neighborhood, etc. contribute to what lands them in the system. Once there, it can be more difficult than most think to get out from underneath it all. That's why we hope our videos help people understand ALL of it. Thanks again for being a loyal viewer of our channel. Much appreciated.

A retail job cannot get you out the hood. As a single mom in NYC, I can tell you that a retail pay is WAY below Apartment Expectations. its not easy as a single parent especially if you dont have nobody by your side to help you while your coming up. child care will hold your child for a limited amount of time before you can even get out from work. You’re LITERALLY doing everything by yourself. and children React differently to different environments and Its but so much we can do to help control it.
