  • Aachen Prison is both Germany’s most dangerous and most secure prison. It houses murderers, sex offenders and pedophiles. Their cells are inspected regularly. It offers space for over 700 prisoners. Who works here, who is serving what for? And how do relatives deal with the arrest of a family member? In our prison documentary we take a look behind the bars.

Yes, it is called protective custody, protecting the public from habitual criminals.
It is used only in severe cases.
In Germany, prison terms are by law often limited, unlike in the USA , were a similar crime might attract a 15 to 90 year sentence.
In the US...3 strikes and you are out.
In Germany....10 strikes and we give you one more last chance.

@@norbertschmitz3358 Sorry, but no, you should in under no situation be kept in prison after your time is served. You've paid your debt to society at that point, and it shows how much of an utter fail the German system is that there's no halfway houses or ways to keep tabs on offenders after they've served their time.
Also, the 3 strikes policy is not universal in the US, it varies state to state but most of them only count it as a "strike" for very serious offenses such as kidnapping or rape, you're not getting struck out for drugs in most cases. I would imagine that in Germany the 10 strike rule is much more liberal in what counts as a strike.

There are the same "evil" people in this prison as in US prisons, murderers, rapists and so on. Germany just doesnt take away their human rights and does not treat them like animals and germany does focus alot more on rehabilitation and making them "non-criminals" once they get out. USA is just focused on harsh outdated punishment basically.
What difference does it make? Alot less violence and a much safer space compared to other countries.
But dont be mistaken. When they dont behave well while inside prison, all the "luxury" is taken until they behave.

@@salatwurzel-4388 Meh look at the inmates in this prison. They are all geriatric which is not surprising considering that the majority of Europe's population are old people. You couldn't do this type of system in America, Russia or Latin America. Those countries have really scary hard core gang members and super aggressive unpredictable criminals. And the criminals in those systems are actually made up of mostly younger men.

    • @salatwurzel-4388

@@Taffer-bx7uc You have basically the same privileges in EVERY german prison (and behave good), hardcore cases like terrorism and forbidden right wing groups aside.
The "immature violent youth" gets kinda seperated from the mature ones (Youth Prisons, age ~16-25).
We also have gang members, rival guys stabbing/shooting each other on the street from time to time and so on. (turkish clans in berlin for example, kinda like the "italian mafia" stereotype in new york).
There are alot of indications that all the brutality and "3rd world feeling" in the US prisons is mostly the goverments fault, because your "style" of rehabilitation and the way you are trying to reintigrate criminals into society is one of the most inefficient and cruel ways to do it, compared to other western nations.

I went to jail for 4 months in Florida. If you get sick you don’t get seen by medical for about a week. Dental problems takes about a month. The guards treat you more or less like a caged dog; Indifferent to everything except that you’re in the cage. We were allowed to go to a concrete room open to the outside by a big iron fence for fresh air once a week. They would do group punishments (shutting off the TV, lockdown, withholding all commissary, etc) for things like if someone wasn’t wearing their clothes properly, sitting on a table, exercising, playing with a ball made out of a shirt. Officers constantly threatened us with DRs which are disciplinary reports that could extend our stay in jail. They looked the other way when there was fights, thefts, harassment, threats, etc. Their random searches involve throwing everything you own on the floor and pushing it around with their shoes. The mats we slept on were about 2” thick with no weight on them and those were on steel trays bolted to the wall. We all had sheets and only some of us had blankets; pillows aren’t allowed. We couldn’t have anything on the walls. It costs our loved ones .50¢ a minute to talk on the phone and about 30$ to do a video call. In person visitations aren’t allowed. I worked in the kitchen and was accused of stealing food and even though they couldn’t prove i did, I was kicked out of the work program and lost its benefits, because I was in the area where they noticed food was missing. If you’re on medication and you don’t hear the call, you’re SOL. If you’re on medication and the nurse misses your block, forgets about your block, or just doesn’t show up for their shift, you’re SOL. If you’re showing signs of hurting yourself or talk about hurting/killing yourself, they take away all of your personal items, strip you naked and give you a “turtle suit” (like a green mover’s blanket with holes for your arms and legs) and they put you in a smaller cell with nothing but a toilet and usually one other person for 72 hours after which you then get to talk to a “psychologist” who pretty much just tells you to not hurt yourself or you’re going back into that small cell.
    TL;DR Florida has shitty jails.

Wow. Plus, visitors and the inmate(s) get to visit in a private room. I'm sure there's cameras, but in Michigan it's ONE huge room where it's loud and CO's walking around. The Staff seem respectful, which is different from where I come from as well.

There is no point in treating prisoners bad. Most of them know they did something bad. No need to punish them in excess. If you treat a prisoner you usually have less problems with them in return. But... not every prison in Germany runs this smooth. You can have many things in prison if you behave and work with the system. There are therapy courses for drug addics, special couseling and work programs and schools. You can even get a GED in prison. It's up to the prisoner. As in most prisons around the world certain things are forbidden even in german prison. Things like alcohol, drugs, pornography, weapons and other thing you can use for break out or a weapon. Bear in mind this is a long term prison. A jail or short sentence prison looks different. Nonetheless most CO are professionals.

Yes, Prison should be more about Rehabilitation than soley for Punishment. Most of the Inmates are going to be free eventualy. So treating them with some kind of dignity and preparing them for the outside world again is beneficial. Of course not all of them will behave once released but the percentages are relativly high compared to other countrys.
It looks cozy in this Prison, but make no mistake, they have no rights left, no privacy rights, except their basic human rights. There is also solitary confinment if you dont behave. And yes, violence inbetween Inmates also happens. But i guess its no comparison to US Prisons.

I've been reading / watching a bit about prisons in the US, and what really, really turns my stomach is that whatever problem is being discussed - people catching diseases, sexual abuse, dirty water, cells too hot / too cold, ... - _somebody_ is going to say "ah well, if they don't like it, they shouldn't be criminals".
Where's the line in the sand? Where's the concept that there are things you should not do to any human being, no matter what?
Where are the "visit the prisoner" christian values?
And then of course there's the complaint that prisoners cost the nation so much money, when most of that money goes into the pockets of private companies charging 5 /minute phone call.
I don't exactly like the thought of, say, a rapist having a comfortable cell and free meals. But I like the thought of prisoners being used as cheap labor and then still being housed in over-crowded cells a lot less.
