You're doing really well mate. Rome wasn't built in a day. Every step is a step forwards. When the inevitable overwhelmed feelings creep in, just break the tasks down into ever smaller, bite sized, chunks. Every bit of progress is a win and every win is a cause for celebration. And if I wasn't in the jungles of the sub-continent I'd come shout you a pie and pint in the pub in such celebration. Mainly because I'm going half mad in my own cravings for a good old fashioned pie lol. Food, food everywhere but not a drop of pie and pint to eat. 😂

I feel your pain brother! Absolute nightmare living on a new boat that you're fixing up at the same time. Shuffling everything from one spot to the next and always finding new things to fix, AND they always drag on into days, weeks long jobs. But hang in there. The first year on your boat is tough, since you're playing catch up on everything and learning about all the issues. 😅 I've learned to just tell myself "if the fix is strong, not creating more problems, and can be fairly trustworthy, then it's good enough for boat work". Remember, epoxy is your friend when fixing boats. I'd slather those engine mounts with lightly thickened epoxy, drill out the holes bigger than the screws/bolts and fill them with heavily thickened epoxy, then drill holes. Make it bombproof, so you don't have to deal with it years later, AGAIN. Another idea to think about, is to try and fix/modify things with one thing in mind. "WHEN I have to fix this again, how can I make accessing it easier for the future." It's a boat, you'll be fixing the same things over and over.
Just the amount of work you are doing by yourself, is impressive. You seem very knowledgeable on all the things you have been showing. Keep on keeping on. If I was in your country, i would help you with the sailing part. I am sure you will do just fine.
Love the way the Intro is really upbeat and positive... then you start watching what your up to and everything goes wrong and is a problem to solve. Can't wait to see you actually sailing. ⛵

I have not been well this week, on top of that i went to see WASP in Manchester last night and like a fool got toilet huggingly drunk on top of me being ill....seeing this video and all the crap you have been having makes my week feel much better....thanks....haha...
Good luck on the sail down! If you decide you need a wind vane, (honestly they’re fantastic) give us a shout. It’ll be the easiest and best thing you’ll fit on the boat!
don't worry about the sailing part, i was in the lake Windermere to try sailing and the guy let me do it. it was pretty easy after a couple of minutes, you can feel the boat and the wind like you're a part of it, amazing ☺️ maybe first try just the main sail , but im sure you'll be fine.
Top job. You’ve just done in one episode that which has psyched me out for two years. My Bukh really needs a good clean and paint to stop my brain itching but sadly no! Bumbling? Perhaps not so much!
Nice work, you're getting there! Boat jobs are always harder than expected haha I got my Contessa 26 about 2 years and slowly refitting the whole thing. I'm moored in Falmouth so get me a shout if you want some hospitality as you sail past on your way up country, I'll show you the best pubs!
You are a inspiration my friend. I myself just bought a 1978 C&C mk 3 27ft sailboat. Watching your videos and a few other youtubers keeps me motivated. Rough sea's make good sailors. Keep up the good work
Lying there in that cramped, coffin-like space, listening to the rain - you must sometimes have terrible doubts about the project. I'm not going to administer any bromides but I admire your pluck.
😂😂😂 Well you're a cheery one! No, no doubts at all. I've dreamed of being on a boat for over a decade, and knew what it was going to entail. I still randomly have fits of giggles at the fact that I'm on a boat. I friggin love it!
If makes you feel any better these troubles we all have fixing old boats. The Contessa being thin just makes life a little more of a challenge. Sometimes makes you think if it wouldn't be easier building a new one. The best but is when you are upside down with your head in the bilge, your shoulders trapped doing an impression of an upside down T rex trying to get a purchase while your legs are waving in the air. We still had the original t stroke with 1970's electrics where you had to stop the engine to go into reverse, I will let you work out how much fun that was.
Well done lifting out the engine big guy, I'm so impressed with your talent's,the boat has doubled in value due to your hard (but good standard) work, don't worry about the sailing bit you'll be a natural cause I think you got what I takes, my hint is,, big wind, tiny sail
Not really. Never done anything that I'd consider a technical job. I've been a scaffolder and a truck driver mainly 👍 I do like fixing things though, which is handy on a boat 😂😂
One day you’ll look back on this and laugh………I say one day, it might be Thursday 2029. Anyway, it may not be as quick as you’d like but you’re definitely getting there. Keep up the good work, it’ll be worth it 👍
I thought the beds looked not too bad a bit of grinding would have brought them back up and drilled out the holes but if your replacing them with stainless steal plates well you can't get better than those can you so can't wait to see the engine back in and running again so all the best from John from Rugbu UK.
Chin up mate, you're doing well. Just had my head down in the crud of bilge and locker bottoms all day on my skippers boat, getting some experience up to do what you're doing. I'm there with you in spirit...us lot need to stick together and always help each other out wherever we can. See you out there in the near future
You can do it! Keep up with the diet, we need updates if only to encourage us all to try. Good effort in removing the engine; are you going to paint out the bilge under it before refitting?
Sometimes it's better out than in as we have all had to experience I'd hazard. Good opportunity to tidy up the engine bay but, yeah, the pressure must be a bugger now. Hang in there mate.
well done matey, that looked like a tough job !! you're gonna know this yacht inside-out by the the end of this restoration project..she's a beauty & so worth it
Getting the engine out was a right faff, but it gives a chance to clean it and spot any leaks. Those bits of metal really are sh1t, so new ones must be better. interesting video 2x👍
I feel your pain! Pulled my engine last week it is sitting in the cockpit, I am on the hard on my trailer so it is about 12 feet to the ground my mast and boom is not on the boat so I have to build something to be able to drop it to the ground. I do see that there are differences in the Canadian built contessa and yours something’s I like more on yours and something’s I like better on the Canadian model. Keep on brother watching you gives me encouragement. And if you have any questions about fiberglass work give me a shout.
Cheers! Sounds like an interesting conundrum! Yeah, there's definitely some differences. I think the cockpits are further aft on the Canadian ones. Or, at least I've seen some with them further aft, I assumed they were the Taylor ones 😂
I am watching your videos and want you to know you yes you are in my prayers. Unbelievable that a bumbing sailor could be in the prayers of another bumbling sailor 5000 miles away but it's true. Believe in and trust your God for he watches over you. Nothing is too small or big for God. Persevere and carry on for the success is just abound the next turn.
well out it has to come ! at least once finished it will be done for good now , and you can give the engine bay a good clean out and a coat of paint apart from tidy up that part of the boat and put the bilge pump in a good place .
Lookimg at your work min the engine bay is SO familiar, it's an absolute hell hole isnt it.... I just hope I dont have to do that job any time soon... well done on beating it!
Like me, you are kind of forced to do it all yourself, and thats a great way to get to know your boat. Nothing comes close to that personal experience when, if, it goes a bit tits up at sea.
Should have them made up won't cost much any engineering shop should be Ok.your doing great Dave just need to have patience when in doubt have another beer cheers mate.
Keep up the good video work. Think you did have the block set up wrong. You should be pulling from the bottom block not the top, gives better leverage. Great to get the engine out & clean it all up. Make sure you try all the bolts that you may have to get to later & put anti-seize on them. much easier with the engine out.😀
Drill out and epoxy fill the holes in the wooden engine beds before you re-install. Drill and epoxy fill the new fasteners as well. Love the stumbling pace, overall👍👍👍👍🖖🤙👊 keep on trucking dude.
Well done! Wouldn't it be a good idea to shine up the engine room and all under it now that you have the access? A clean engine room is important. Cause you then can easily spot any kind of leaks/problems in the future.
your doing well mate. not so good your short on time to get moving. ive been there done that, more than once. good progress tho. im sure you will make the deadline for moving location. interesting pot noodle video. fair winds
We are both on a similar journey as I have also just bought myself a Bowatttttttt. Hmmmm, when I reach that point where I have exhausted my knowledge and will to live, I come here to watch your progress and you inspire me to continue. Love your sense of humour and will to succeed it is infectious and keeps me going through the wearisome bits. I was watching Sailing Wildlings efforts as well and he suggested a brilliant idea for getting all that crud out of bilges anchor lockers and such, buy a wet and dry vacuum, I have just cleaned my bilges out using one and although it took some times to clean the vacuum, it did the bilges a treat. Keep up the good work, I need your inspiration.
@@BumblingSailor Here we are both on this journey, my last time sailing a boat was when I was a 13 year old kid, once the work is done on mine I have to sail her about 100 miles to her new anchorage, we can both crap ourselves as the date of our sea trials draws nearer lol
Greeting👍.I noticed your ' bitter endy thing 'was connected with what looked like a stainless shackle. As you know dissimilar metals not be doing your front hold mast up thingy any good atall👍😉
" Sailing is like standing in a cold shower, tearing up Fivers." - Duke of Edinburgh ( I think ), and that was a few decades ago, so it is more like £50 notes now. Please clean and paint that engine bilge, and the engine, before it goes back in.
It's been a few too many days , how's the fight going pal ? I've run out of money for mine buying solar , diesel heater, so it's time for me to get to work on installs. Being a waiter at Applebee's getting the stuff I want is going to be tough . Your channel shows guys like me that the only thing stopping us is strength of character and a masculine amount of stoicism, please keep leading way dude
I actually wanted to call the boat 'zeno' after the father of stoicism 😂. I'm not going to change the name now though. I'm in the same boat, as it were, I've run out of money to buy solar or wind, so I'm gonna rig up some janky system to charge the lithium from the engine. Through an inverter and a battery charger 😂😂. Inefficient, but should work. I think I should be ready by the end of the week to go sailing, unless something else crops up. We'll see 😂
@@BumblingSailor ooohhh ya got lithium ! Nice dude ,I've got 400 lbs of lead acid for mine . Changing a boats name makes less good luck, not bad luck just less good that's why mine has an alias for shananagans... The black pearl necklace ! Her real name is SEMPER SOLDALAS
Yeah, I've had the battery about 3 years, it used to be in my van. Only 120ah, but hoping it'll be enough to last a few days before having to charge. We'll see!
@@BumblingSailor if Americans were as rich as the rest of the world thought I'd send you a panel kit but I'm so poor that I have to ask for a discount on FREE advice lo !l that is part of the reason your channel is my favorite , it feels like a real person sharing his captains log not a plastic only fans girl strutting around the carabian
I have lost a couple of stone eating protein and vegetables and cutting out the bread rice potatoes carbohydrates ..it takes a couple of days to get used to but it 100% works
that thing you took out has a name: proper fucked. good thing about that 1GM10 is that you can manually carry it around for short bursts. the 2Gm20 is already too heavy for those moves, not impossivle but at 113 kg its a bit of a pain. since you have the engine out, give iit a good clean, use an air compressor and a brush, then manually wire brush everything, primer and spray paint. those engines are nice little beasts for what they actually are and will keep on going so long you look after them.
Soba! Good for you! Use a spoon not a fork, you get every last scrap with a spoon. One more thing.... please don't broadcast how delicious they are. I've found they keep putting the price up as it becomes more popular 😟. 18 months ago £1.20. Now £1.70 😯
@@BumblingSailor couple of issues with that, Machining tolerances. Only takes 1mm somewhere for it to be wrong. And it assumes it was right to start with which it probably wasn't.
Actually, thinking about it, it's irrelevant. I have 10mm laterally with the slotted mount hole and whatever I want vertically. The only dimension I don't have movement in in fore and aft, but that doesn't matter because I have adjustment in that with the coupler on the shaft. It'll be fine.
@@BumblingSailor you would think that would be enough wouldn't you? I made the same mistake, after hours of being upside down in the bilges I realised it wasn't! to get the left right alignment right you need to be able to move the mounts fore/aft. you would think that you would just need to move the front of the engine sideways but all that actually does is do parallelogram things and all that does is compress the mounts a bit and doesnt actually change the alignment!
I think it's a bastardisation of off the shelf and custom. I think you can find them off the shelf for the origo. Probably expensive. Just finished your latest episode! Friggin hilarious.
www.westmarine.com/dometic-stove-gimbal-for-origo-1500-and-3000-stoves-14473763.html These are the things I have. You can use the stove gimballed or not. It'd be pretty easy to make some custom ones I reckon. It'll be fun to watch anyway 😂. I forgot I did that, Jerome is a pretty good guy.

@@BumblingSailor you cannot argue with that observation. Good news.👊🤙🖖👍
Well done! Wouldn't it be a good idea to shine up the engine room and all under it now that you have the access? A clean engine room is important. Cause you then can easily spot any kind of leaks/problems in the future.
You never know, I might have already done that and put the engine back in 😉
@@BumblingSailor I know you have already put the engine back in as I read your reply in one of the comments further down :-)
Nooooooooo! You weren't supposed to know! More spoilers that Tom Holland. 😂
your doing well mate. not so good your short on time to get moving. ive been there done that, more than once. good progress tho. im sure you will make the deadline for moving location. interesting pot noodle video. fair winds
😂😂😂 Thanks! It'll be tight, but I might just make it... Hopefully. 😂
It's all progress to making her seaworthy . 🏝
Cheers!
Prince William on the cover of the VHF handbook?? 👀
You're the 2nd person to say that! 😂😂😂
Thanks so much! When I get the boat back up north, virtually everything is coming out. I'll get her clean as a whistle (probably) then 😂
@@BumblingSailor Here we are both on this journey, my last time sailing a boat was when I was a 13 year old kid, once the work is done on mine I have to sail her about 100 miles to her new anchorage, we can both crap ourselves as the date of our sea trials draws nearer lol
😂😂😂 There's definitely been an element of crapping myself 😂
Greeting👍.I noticed your ' bitter endy thing 'was connected with what looked like a stainless shackle.
As you know dissimilar metals not be doing your front hold mast up thingy any good atall👍😉
I've painted the full area in rubber paint now, including inside the stay thing, so they shouldn't be touching. Until it wears through 😂
@@BumblingSailor mid steel and stainless aren't that dissimilar, hardly anything on the galvanic scale
" Sailing is like standing in a cold shower, tearing up Fivers." - Duke of Edinburgh ( I think ), and that was a few decades ago, so it is more like £50 notes now. Please clean and paint that engine bilge, and the engine, before it goes back in.
No. That's a job for another time. I'm practically emptying the Hull when I get up north. The Duke of Edinburgh knew what he was on about 😂
The bane of my weight is the 10 pints or so I get daily... Something to consider 😝🍺🍺
Pffft, I ain't cutting down on that! 😂
I get you 🍺🍺
It's been a few too many days , how's the fight going pal ?
We'll see!
@@BumblingSailor if Americans were as rich as the rest of the world thought I'd send you a panel kit but I'm so poor that I have to ask for a discount on FREE advice lo !l that is part of the reason your channel is my favorite , it feels like a real person sharing his captains log not a plastic only fans girl strutting around the carabian
a few projects started but not completed. boat life.
I have a fine balance of 10 projects being worked on at any time 😂😂
What's your plans for future sailing after you have the boat tip top, would be good to see a video on that. Steady progress 🤙🏻
Tip top won't be until after a few months on the hard up north. But hoping for an Atlantic crossing this year...
@@BumblingSailor yes mate 🙌 I will definitely be watching for that one, good job on your progress so far; both with the channel and the boat 🤙🏻
probably need a BSW (Whitworth) spanner
Or a grinder 😂😂😂
Were you able to get the engine out without bleeding all over? At least it was a small engine. Good videos. You will soon be learning to sail.
Aye, she came out clean. And no blood 😂. Close to 100kg, but far better than a bigger one! 😂
Lol, those moments when you realise you should never have started that job but are too far in to stop. Boats, yeah.
Yep, boats 😂
I have lost a couple of stone eating protein and vegetables and cutting out the bread rice potatoes carbohydrates ..it takes a couple of days to get used to but it 100% works
That will be the next, cheaper stage. I'm saving the huel stuff for the passage now. It'll be pretty convenient!
What happened about the hole did you manage to fix it
I've fixed it by ignoring it 😂
that thing you took out has a name: proper fucked.
good thing about that 1GM10 is that you can manually carry it around for short bursts. the 2Gm20 is already too heavy for those moves, not impossivle but at 113 kg its a bit of a pain.
since you have the engine out, give iit a good clean, use an air compressor and a brush, then manually wire brush everything, primer and spray paint. those engines are nice little beasts for what they actually are and will keep on going so long you look after them.
The engine is already back in, but don't tell anyone 😂
@@BumblingSailor alright (whispering)
Get a small tent and stuff all the stuff init
For what? I don't understand 😂
@@BumblingSailor well get all the stuff that’s in the way err out, worked for me working on a even smaller boat
Oh right 😂. I have most of it in the car, apart from stuff I'm working on. I wouldn't have anywhere to put a tent.
Swap you. Some weight loss hypnosis for a boat trip. Or perhaps find out about a past life.🎉🎉
I effing jeffin hate coach bolts, roof bolts and slotted screws bloody things are everywhere on boats and they are a bloody nuisance to get out
I definitely agree. (although I've put some back in 🙈)
@@BumblingSailor well me too to be fair lol
Don't fucking give up...
Never!
Soba! Good for you! Use a spoon not a fork, you get every last scrap with a spoon.
One more thing.... please don't broadcast how delicious they are. I've found they keep putting the price up as it becomes more popular 😟. 18 months ago £1.20. Now £1.70 😯
The first time I ever saw them, they were on offer. 3 for £2.50. That would have been a better investment than gold or something 😂
Do not screw the beds down until....
Oh....
They are in.
You have just made your life very very hard to get the alignment right.
Should be fine. Every hole was drilled in the exact same place as the old ones. Should just line straight up as the mounts are identical too.
@@BumblingSailor couple of issues with that,
Machining tolerances. Only takes 1mm somewhere for it to be wrong.
And it assumes it was right to start with which it probably wasn't.
Well, not much I can do about it now. But if it wasn't right before and lasted 10 years, I'll definitely take that. 😂
😊👍
👍
Is that gimball on your cooker a custom or off the shelf job? I need one in my life, well boat.
I think it's a bastardisation of off the shelf and custom. I think you can find them off the shelf for the origo. Probably expensive. Just finished your latest episode! Friggin hilarious.
@@BumblingSailor ah great, sounds like it was designed on Mist 🤣 Just watching you on @SailingIntoOblivion
www.westmarine.com/dometic-stove-gimbal-for-origo-1500-and-3000-stoves-14473763.html
These are the things I have. You can use the stove gimballed or not. It'd be pretty easy to make some custom ones I reckon. It'll be fun to watch anyway 😂. I forgot I did that, Jerome is a pretty good guy.
@@BumblingSailor I have just about had it with my attempts. The hammer is coming out next! If that doesn't work, hit harder!!! Thanks for the link. This will be a post hammer purchase if required.
Yeah, I think they're out of stock so... Maybe gentle hammer?
Great progress ... You need to eat real food mate!!
Maybe one day 😂
Wait, what? You pulled an engine all on your own??
Aye.
Why is Prince William on the cover of your VHF handbook?
😂😂😂 You're the 3rd person to say that, I'd never even noticed before! 😂
He was taking a break from his busy pegging schedule
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍
Eat pattern making
😂
Sorry…… Nice pattern making
😂😂 Cheers!
Please let us know how much it costs you to service the engine. Any other details regarding your money spent so far will be appreciated.
And man, don't think about sailing without making sure your boat is safe!
I might do a breakdown of cost video before I set off. Great idea!
Very nice squiggle.
Electrican by chance?
Not in the slightest 😂. Just an idiot with a pen 😂
Yeah, me too. Just looked familiar to some electric drawings I did back in the day...
