Thank you for your recommendation I truly need more shelving units for all my too many movies. For the holidays I added 300 plus new movies 😅 hurray Happy New Year to you
I did my own with plywood, 1"x2", and 1"x3". We did floor to ceiling on 3 sides of a room for around 200 I think. It was super easy! Cut plywood into 7" strips. Nail gun 1x2 to the wall for the height you need. nail gun the plywood to the 1x2. then the 1x3 are the supports on the sides. I am not crazy handy and they are still easy as hell. Then I painted them and added led ribbon lighting to the edges.
The shelving looks pretty good, but I'm concerned that the metal brackets will likely scratch the boxes of the movies that are at either end of each shelf. There needs to be a solid panel at each end of the shelves, that covers the brackets for the full height of each shelf. Aesthetically, I think the brackets would look better if they were slightly shorter, in line with the length of the shelves and finished off with some sort of covering at the front of the bare metal.
Those shelves you got look amazing! I have some media shelves I bought from Best Buy around Y2K... I think they were rated to hold like 500 CDs, but the shelves could be adjusted to instead/also hold VHS and DVDs! So quaint. I bought two units for about $250. They're mostly made from wood with a black lamenate on them. Here we are nigh a quarter-century later and those bad boys are holding up fine with my mix of 1,173 4Ks, BDs, and DVDs (no VHS or CDs on them anymore). The shelves are nearly full (I think I'll make it to 1,200), and there's no bowing in the wood, no cracks, or other visible damage other than a scuff or minor scratch from general wear and tear. Next year's going to be a challenge for me as I run out of storage space for my movies... So it's fortunate I found this video. I'll take a look at Modern Shelving. Thanks!
I still use the rotating DVD shelves, because they’re cheaper and easier to move around in my house, and I can organize hundreds of movies, since my bookshelf is now used for analog media like books, vinyl, cassette tapes. Also I use the rotating shelf for physical video games.
The shelving is fantastic and should outlast anything else but not cheap but it's an investment in your hobby. The particle board is still a good idea if you never have to move them.
Yeah, my three IKEA BILLY bookcases may be particle board, but they are holding up GREAT! Thanks for the $1000 idea but $250-300 is even better savings! Yes, you buy extra shelves (sold separately) and you can get 9+ shelves by buying the height extensions.
I recently got a Billy Bookcase and so far it's great. I got one with glass doors. I need doors to keep dust and cat hair out. I'm thinking about getting another to have them side by side
I love a Billy Bookshelf too. I have several in my office. My issue is that they are so deep that they take up too much room. For these shelves, I just wanted maximum storage in the smallest possible area.
$300 for the 24" media shelf is a really solid price for what it looks like you get. Should be super nice with a bit of spray paint to get the color I want too. I just ordered a set - thank you!
Yeah, let's be real. Only way it will cost 2K if you get 6 sections. What Jeff has there costs $800 (according to the website) which granted is still a bunch of money. They way I see it, it's always nice paying for quality, if you can afford it.
@@Richbrothif u had a job u might realize what it takes to make that much money, who the hell would wanna spend their hard earned labor on an expensive shelf when a cheap one will suffice, it’s just a place to set your films down, it doesn’t need to be the best of the best
@@davidrocha9493is it that much less? I think since they’ve standardized the shelves based on my work with them to make these custom shelves, now it will come down in price. For $800, that’s not bad at all!
For that much money, I would build in shelves to my wall myself! Buy nice wood. And turn one room into a nice library type room by building them in. 🤷♂️
Bookmarking these for later. Currently I'm someone who is 25 years old and because of my work I constantly move all the time every 6 months or so and only have storage space for whatever I own to fit in a honda civic. Because of this my about 450 discs worth of my physical media collection are mainly all stored in binders and the empty cases are in storage bins in my parents attic across the country. Once I am able to find a stable job and living situations, I will definitely consider buying one of these shelving units if they are still being sold in like 3-4 years from now. I just want to be able to proudly display all my physical media by then, but for now I am stuck with binders unfortunately.
I use Atlantic media shelves for manga (mostly 5x7.5 in paperbacks) and they have survived multiple moves and are doing better than ever now that I got them anchored to the wall in my current place. I think they are significantly heavier than blu rays. They show some signs of wear so I get what you're saying about particle board. All considered your shelves look great but I don't think it's worth the upgrade and maybe a little overkill
Those are nice. I gave up trying to find quality shelves and built my own (8' high, wall-to-wall on two walls, adjustable, sturdy and anchored). They don't hold all my discs (about 3/4 worth). I used 8'x6" whiteboard (hardwood was just too expensive!) for the sides, top, bottom, and top and center cross beams (used square and T brackets on the bottom back instead of a cross beam, so the shelves can stand out from the baseboard, but still touch the walls), 1/8" and 1/4" plywood for the shelf boards (thicker ones for TV boxed sets which are more densely packed than movies), 1/8" hardboard for the backs, and shelf pins to make them adjustable. I used adhesive felt strips on the back over the screws and brackets to protect the walls and baseboard.
Would be amazing if they offered a faux wood shelf option. Either just brown tones or fake wood like grain texture. So this way you get the best of both worlds.
I built my own shelves so they'd fit the walls exactly. It's of course crooked in a few places. I'm not a good cabinet maker so I'm not surprised. I can't decide if I try again or just buy some shelves. I do like that the shelves I can make fit exactly rather than a store bought pre-set dimension. Aluminum sounds like a cool idea.
thanks for the video, great looking shelfs. the timing of this video is great since i’ve recently been looking for some new shelf’s due to my growing collection and these are the best quality shelf’s i’ve ever seen. $800 for quality and space for a thousand movies is well worth the price for ppl who need this sort of thing. i’m sure prices will lower and stabilize over time as well. i’d much rather spend a larger sum upfront then the same amount over time from cheap stuff that will just eventually break or you’ll outgrow. also damn, i know most are trolls but i had no idea that shelf’s would trigger so many ppl. it’s not like anyone is being forced to buy anything. just be happy that we have the option for good quality storage and protection concerning physical media collection this is a W for us.
Moved into an apartment earlier this year, and haven't bought (or watched) DVDs or Blu-rays since-in part because I don't have shelves for them anymore. I had built myself a cheap media shelf when I still lived with my parents, but it had less chance of surviving the move than my Walmart prepack shelves, haha. Recently I decided I really need to unpack and display all my movies again. This aluminum shelf would be tempting even on my tight budget, but as a renter, I can't drill into my walls. Your video did remind me of those rotating shelves you were using, though, so I think I'll use those, at least until I can move into a more permanent space.
There is one thing that I would be concerned with, and that that is the nicer steel books getting scuffed on that metal particularly at the ends of each shelf.
Looks great. Not a bad price for a premium product that can be customized for a space, will last forever, and can still be easily installed by a DIY’er.
Seems sturdy but I don’t really like the design with the shelf supports a different colour and sticking out 🫤 I own 4 particle board based media shelves by a brand called Artiss. They have adjustable shelves. Mine came laminated with chestnut brown laminate. And each unit is about 1 metre wide and 2 metres tall. Resulting in about 9 shelves per unit which you can adjust to suit Blu-rays, DVDs or CDs. Once setup and against the wall, they are sturdy and safe, and in the exact same condition as when I bought them (5yrs ago) - no breakage. If you look after them they last forever. I did not need to screw anything to the walls for them as each one has a wide base ensuring it can never tip or anything. So I put soft felt pads on the top of the back of each unit to ensure there is no minor wall rub over the years. Each unit costs about AU$150 on eBay. And the end result looks expensive, and all dark brown. But I believe they come in a variety of shades.
These are not bad at all. But shelving with vertical beams supports are also available at Lowes and Home Depot. I built a couple myself throughout the years for media and books and they're pretty sturdy
Thanks for this. I ordered a wall unit and if all works out going to get a second one. I should finally be able to put up my whole collection. The previous shelving units are just okay and really not sized for movies. Even got small discount with your code. Once again thank you for finding this company. Can't wait to get my order in and put up the unit.
Custom bookcase works really well. Lot less expensive you can build it better than you can buy it. Yeah I'll never buy anything made of particular board. A lot of furniture is made of that and you still have to put it together. Might as well build it like you want with better material. If you are handy with woodworking.
So question... When arranging your movies, what do you do? Do you put them in order of decades? Like all your 80's stuff together? Do you put all by distributor? Or is it all random? Just curious. I'm at that point where I need to figure things out. Right now I have all my 80s movies together on my 4 side spinning media holder. On the other side I have 90s. Wondering if I should just put early 2000 on one side and the rest on the last side? That's what I'm thinking of doing. 🤔
I JUST started getting into collecting Physical movies. Loving this channel. Good recommendations on some of your videos. But DAMN is it hard to find some films anymore. For the life of me I can’t get my hands on Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse blu ray 3D (US version). Crazy how fast movies stop getting made. Very sad.
Watch out. It's very addictive! lol 3D movies seem to have completely disappeared in Australia, along with 3D (actually stereoscopic) TVs. For some reason they didn't take off, here. I don't have a 3D TV, but I do have a 3D gaming computer monitor (Alienware). I never ended up buying the 3D glasses for it, though. Funny enough my video editor (CyberLink PowerDirector 13) can render regular videos into 3D videos. I've never tried it, though.
@@jublywubly Addictive might be an understatement lol! I dont want to admit how much ive already spent in the last few weeks..but WORTH it! The quality of video and audio is WAY better than streaming. Also, 3D is Awesome! I got a 3D projector and its my new favorite way to watch movies..IMMERSIVE.
There's a lot I really like about this. I just don't like how the shelf brackets protrude. Wish the side rails were the same depth as the shelf brackets to give a more flush/finished look.
How about this idea… the wider shelf set with the top half as a SteelBook display (flat sheet of metal with a pre positioned magnets and a material cover) and then the normal shelf storage on the bottom? Even better an included top shelf with a lighting system to light up the display????
Thanks for sharing! From the beginning, my first thoughts were, no matter if it's wood, aluminum or steel, it can bow over time.Bu then you showed the shelves out of packaging and they have ribs running along the bottom. So they do look pretty durable. Unfortunately, I don't have a media room or much wall space in living room for normal racks. Spinner racks are my ONLY option. I have 4 completely full and need to get another soon, as I have DVDs boxed up at the moment. If Modern Shelving could make their version of a spinning rack, that would be great!
I have around 450 movies contained in 4 small bookcase units which cost £10 ($12/$13) each. They look decent and do the job very well. I can't fathom spending huge sums of money on shelving; that's money better spent on films!
I didnt hear it stated (or maybe i missed it)...but is this a sponsored video? I feel its important to state that cuz let's be real you would never have justified spending $2k on shelves. Good for you though for snagging these for free though; you earned it with the channel you've built.
I have about 5,350 movie discs and about 1,000 video games. Can you get longer shelve plates (like 3 feet long)? My shelves take up both sides of my 15 foot long hallway, floor-to-ceiling.
Geez 😳 That's a lot of titles. I only have about 200 titles as I've only started collecting this year since May. This will come in handy once my collection gets much bigger. Thanks for showing us cool shelves!
I built mine with a 1x6x6 pine wood a for about $45 each and it the same amount of one of those so if I make 3 of them ill will be around 145 and is sturdy. Sorry but that’s a lot a money for shelf’s they look nice but I will never pay that much for a shelf. I even made my vinyl record shelf with a threaded rod and are amazing and adjustable . I’m really thinking on making all my movies digital and get rid off the cases put them on my shed and put the movies on selves in a box. And keep my space for my records. But is just me. Good video!
I use ikea kallax with stoppers glued to keep the cases from going too deep. Kallax is good because it also fits a ps5 after modifying. It’s not a great solution :p
Finding a good way to store my precious discs isn‘t easy. I like how well done and stable these shelves look, but I‘d never use something open, since you have to clean them regularly so they don‘t collect dust. Also, which maybe isn‘t a problem in your room, since it doesn‘t seem to have windows, I don‘t think that permanent sun exposure is good for longevity of the discs.
I really wish there was a standalone version of this without having to mount on sheetrock, even with good anchors (I've had stuff go weak and come out of the wall even with anchors). Have you had any experience with Prepac shelving?
Hello @ebinrock , I decided to come back to this comment and replace it. I have use a Prepac shelf - the Slim Barrister Tower, a single width. As far as particale board style shelves go they are very good. No voids or delamination. After I got one I started looking for more. In my area they are not possible to get. If you get the Barrister style be aware the last disc case on each end of a shelf can only be removed if another is taken out of a full row. Also, with wider shelfing in the Barrister type there is a strip that is wider at each division that can hide some titles. And if you want to improve you shelving from any manufacturer, replace the tack type nails holding on the back with #4 screws 1/2 to 3/4 inch long (do drill 1/16" pilot hole for those). Secondly, get some plastic (push-in or screw-in type) feet to slide the shelf around on (will protect from clean water too, preventing the corners from deteriorating).
These shelves look great Jeff and your room is coming together nicely, though I have a feeling you're gonna regret that extra lip later down the road when your kids start trying to climb your movie shelves 😂
Sweating over hanging up the poles to be the exact distance apart as the length of the shelves would be my hang up, no pun intended. Looks hard… oh well, I don’t think I have a spot anyway. Hmm…
Dang brother… you got a wicked collection! I’d like to know your thoughts now that BB is leaving physical media behind… how do you feel this will impact us, disc fans… where might a fellow enjoyer look to now with this shift? Much ❤️ 💪🍺
These have been popping up on my IG. Very interesting. However. I try my best not to put holes on my walls as much as possible . Just the OCD in me. So I prefer standing shelves.
Awesome shelves dude! Just bought a cheap particle board shelf with a fairly attractive oak finish. Not ideal, but I got tired of hunting for the ideal, I’ve just got stacks of Blu-rays that need a home. Maybe someday I’ll be cool like you and get something stable and lasting like this… and a place to put them, heh. Also why’s your TV so HIGH!? Haha 😄 Would not like looking up to watch a movie. Straight ahead for me. (I know, ideals aren’t always possible.) Now I gotta go figure out how to put this stupid shelf together… bleh. lol
This is good for a custom space, but I don’t think anything compares to the triple stack Atlantic Oskar shelves. Very high quality for how low the cost is.
I had it for 4 months, and the moment I moved the shelf, the backing started to come off and it started to break in half. Those things are such poor build quality.
@@HeroesReforged you could always reinforce it with your own backing, the structure itself is very solid. I think I would rather replace em after each move anyways than spend $2,000 on a small media tower. If I knew I wasn’t moving or going anywhere tho then a custom built in is definitely the way to go.

Wish the side rails were the same depth as the shelf brackets to give a more flush/finished look.
you didn't want it all black? i feel like it would look a lot more slick that way
Did you get rid of your svs towers and why? What are you using now
I’m using SVS Bookshelf speakers. Will be covered in a future video
I love my IKEA bookcases only cost me less than $200-300 for 3-4 bookcases and hold up really good and holds properly 300-400 dvds
They look freaking awesome very nice
How about this idea… the wider shelf set with the top half as a SteelBook display (flat sheet of metal with a pre positioned magnets and a material cover) and then the normal shelf storage on the bottom? Even better an included top shelf with a lighting system to light up the display????
Are these things like, super-sharp to the touch? This bracket ends at the front look deadly
Awesome. Considering how frequently poor shelving breaks down. This is definitely worth the money.
I made my own shelves. Hold about the same and similar foot print. Cost me about £150 from b&q. Its the entire wall floor to ceiling.
Not sponsored, but the shelves were comped for review as mentioned.
I have about 5,350 movie discs and about 1,000 video games. Can you get longer shelve plates (like 3 feet long)? My shelves take up both sides of my 15 foot long hallway, floor-to-ceiling.
Geez 😳
That's a lot of titles. I only have about 200 titles as I've only started collecting this year since May.
This will come in handy once my collection gets much bigger. Thanks for showing us cool shelves!
Happy New Year
The Billy bookcase from IKEA has been great for me.
Looking good Jeff, I think I will need some of these soon!
I like them but I don't get why the brackets have to be wider than the shelf and stick out.
The brackets are the same width as the shelf. The shelf sits right on the bracket.
Great shelving option 🙂
It’s not a great solution :p
what happened to those black cinema chairs?
Do you replace every upscale? DVD to Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray.
Those are nice!
Room looks great, but I thought you were going to put a projector in there?
Retail shelving in the home . . . .
I suspect that can be bought cheaper somewhere.
Hmm…I bet it would be easy, and significantly cheaper, to use aluminum T slot extrusion to do the exact same thing! Maybe three hundred bucks.
1) This looks great! Congrats.
2) Thanks for doing this. Very helpful. 👍🏽
These shelves look great Jeff and your room is coming together nicely, though I have a feeling you're gonna regret that extra lip later down the road when your kids start trying to climb your movie shelves 😂
I need to figure that out. lol - the kids will definitely climb it
very interesting to see the process in real time, thx for this video
Nice video. I have 2 of the prepac media stands that are on Amazon for about $150 and had no issues with em. Good quality imo.
where do you buy those movie case display stands?
Surprised you didn’t go for the black poles/brackets, might’ve hidden the divisions more. Is it because of the bigger design plan with the room?
I kinda liked the contrast, I could swap them out for black or spray paint them though. I’ll see how I feel in a few months!
Sweating over hanging up the poles to be the exact distance apart as the length of the shelves would be my hang up, no pun intended. Looks hard… oh well, I don’t think I have a spot anyway. Hmm…
I noticed you had to sacrifice a wall outlet with that far left column of shelving.
Looks nice.
Looks awesome, congrats man, and thanks for sharing!
That's great. My step dad was into Carpentry, so I built my own shelf out of scrap wood it took a while, but it was fun.
I get my shelves from IKEA
I would actually has gotten these shelves with a 3.75 inch depth to make them invisible. Pretty sleek as is though!
You probably could! I wanted a little room to put things in front on the shelves too
Those are great shelves, but wayyyyyy over my budget. But they do look good and they can fit any space. Thanks.
(I know, ideals aren’t always possible.)
Now I gotta go figure out how to put this stupid shelf together… bleh. lol
What a wall
Did they ever make a 4K remake of Night Shift?? The first Ron Howard Film??
No
I’d be more interested if they were 4” shelves. Being that most people don’t have a recess in their wall.
This is good for a custom space, but I don’t think anything compares to the triple stack Atlantic Oskar shelves. Very high quality for how low the cost is.
I had those. They just don’t last if you’re moving around at all. The particle board fell apart
@@JeffRauseoI literally held off from buying shelves because I wasn’t confident in particle board. Almost purchased the Atlantic Media. Glad I waited.
@@JeffRauseoI wonder if building your own from aluminum boards from Home Depot would be cheaper.
I like it
Are you willing to sell your collection on eBay?
There needs to be a spacer at the top of where the movie case ends, so it doesn't lean to the left and right at the end of each row. =/
