The problem with getting rid of stuff is some of the films go out of print and you start to regret getting rid of it
It's always nice to cleanse a collection every now and then. As we grow as individuals sometimes our taste changes. Plus it opens up space for some new movies. Great video!
3:47 I got the Alien quadrilogy in 2003 and loved it so much. Still do. I’ll never get rid of it. The box is beautiful. Never ever getting rid of it.
I have a ton of DVDs that I have no idea what to do with. Can’t sell them, can’t give them away, don’t want to bin them.
Why is it that you can't sell or give away?
@@ThexthSurvivor No one wants them. I've tried to sell them, swap them and straight up give them away.
@@goukigod Are they damaged or in bad shape? Or contain video materials that are outdated? Or maybe the people that got rid of their DVD and Bluray players, and now use streaming services so they wouldn't want them. Otherwise, I find it bizarre that you can't sell or give them away. How about eBay or Mercari? Have you tried there? I would take them off your hands, but I'm probably far from you. I'm in NYC.

I’ve never really purged any movies. The only time I upgrade is TV shows in a better box. (I never really owned or will own any blu-rays or 4K’s tbh)
I'd hang on to that DVD of The Thing just for the uncut commentary. The other releases have a few changes. And I could never get rid of my copy for sentimental reasons cos it's the first DVD I ever bought.
Love this mate! Much like you I’ve been watching a few purge vids lately and I’m preparing for a new year clear out of some of the duplicates / unwanted editions. I can’t speak for everyone of course, but I think collectors can easily fall in to just stockpiling, and a collection should reflect someone’s taste, not just their ability to buy everything that’s available. As painful as this is….it’s necessary. There is a fine line between being a collector and being a hoarder, in my experience anyway 😂
I make some fellow collectors mad, when I upgrade if the former copy has a booklet I’ll keep the booklet with the new version or the previous case is better I’ll transfer disc to the older box or the old one has extras not ported over (Disney cough cough) I’ll put the disc with the extras in the new versions case
Dude you never watched Team America.. and you have the _Unrated_ disc with the super raunchy extra scenes!! Holy crap you don't know what you're missing out on !!! Well fortunately for us die hard fans of South Park...(Trey Parker & Matt Stone)... Team America was recently released on Blu-ray, with the _Unrated_ cut no less. I'll wait a bit for the price to come down, but I guarantee if you like Comedy films... this one is top shelf.
Every once and a while I throw duplicates on ebay, unfortunately there are no stores near me to sell to. Duplicate Blu-rays I often give to an Uncle that likes movies and donates them to his local library after watching them. Duplicate Disney titles I often give to a neighbor with 3 young kids.
Your making perfect sense.I do see some collectors with copy after copy of the same movie with different artwork.Thats cool for them,but I've found the older I get (I'm mid 50s) the more worry there is of total loss of control and space.
Team America is one of the funniest films ever made.

I own too many different versions of films and find it hard to get rid of old copies. I am fortunate to have a big house and have floor to shelving in my study (4K and Blu-ray), blur ays and music DVDs in my garage, main dvd and some box sets in the summer house, vhs in shed. Sadly though I also collect many vinyl and Laser discs.
I have used CEX to recycle media but often the prices that they offer are so low that I have just gifted them to friends s and relatives. I have kept a lot of dvd boxsets and editions from labels such as anchor bay ( load of hammer films)

Purge, purge, purge. The 4K format is the last format needed. When I get a new 4K I love, then I’ll place old duplicate discs into one of The Little Free Libraries in the neighborhood. Since I have 3,000 records, I just can’t afford taking up any more of my space, and someone my get a movie they’d be happy to watch for free.

I Have been very selective about what stays in my collection? Especially. AsI am. Replacing Stuff. 4K, The only stuff that I hold onto is if any of it has been autographed or Other circumstances. Apart from that as I rejuvenate my stuff older stuff I sell we still have a brick and mortar store that will purchase blu rays et cetera, Store credit or cash. I always go store credit to use towards more purchases. They have quite a selection there of used and new material. This hobby is quite exciting and I hope that physical media stays with us forever.
I just take the dvd and put it in a sleeve and put it with the 4k or blu ray. Then I keep the dvd covers in a folder and recycle the plastic case. That way I can keep it with the collection and it won’t take up space.

The audio commentary in the 4k and blu ray of The Thing is censured, but not on the DVD, if you care for that kind of thing (I do).
Getting second hand regret from this 😂. I got rid of near a thousand DVDs to CEX in several trips back in 2014 and I definitely regret getting rid of a heap of them. Especially films that didn't get a good upgrade or some TV shows and stand ups. Some nostalgia looking at a lot of these too that I let go.
Oh and CEX are bastards for trade in value. Some they gave me when I looked at the receipt were 1c. I would have rather given them to charity.
the hottest topic in the bluray community these days seems to be how to limit your collection and not hoard
I've got probably about 40 blu-rays I want to ditch since getting the 4K releases, though I do intend to keep a select few for certain movies if I have a reason to. ie: my OOP Twilight Time releases of As Good As It Gets and The Blob 1988, my various versions of Dredd 2012, or the older blu-ray of Apocalypto which has a Mel Gibson commentary track.
Other than that, I've got maybe 20 blind buys on blu-ray and 4K that I didn't really like, that I want to pass on. No real good place to sell them here, locally, that can distinguish between common filler and more uncommon limited edition and boutique type stuff, or even factor in slipcovers. ebay is probably the way to go, but it's just so time consuming.
Important rule of thumb: 1. anything numbered has value and should be retained. 2. Novelties like the Reservoir Dogs gas can are highly sought after by collectors and should also be retained. You should Ebay these at a later date

@@themovievault it will help you find out what you have and how much each film is worth,you can either type in the title or just scan with the bar code feature. You can also find films and see which branch has it. I don’t suggest ordering on line,because you don’t know what condition they are in.
Mate, the Gremlins 4K is regarded as one of the worst 4k in the US so be careful just dumping DVDs. Just because something is 4k doesn’t default mean it’s the best. Just from collector to collector

I don't get rid of DVD artwork/boxes i really like even when i upgrade to Blu-ray or 4K if it's just a standard case etc. i just replace the disc in the boxes and add a dot sticker to signifying the type of disc inside. I nearly unsubscribed when i heard you disrespect V for Vendetta! 😉😁👍🍺😎
Please give second thought to some of the lovely packaging you're giving up on. They are a throwback to when companies gave a damn in their presentations. There's nothing more disheartening than opening a new blu ray and just have one solitary disc staring back at you. You're clearly of the opinion that 4K is king but I've always thought the aggregate experience was more important, especially when there is little, if any, distance between watching the movie in 1080p and in 4k.

That's how I feel about vhs tapes. DVDs still look watchable to me. But nothing before that format.
