  • in this video, we're building cheap and easy media shelves! These shelves are great for those who want to keep costs low and are looking for storage solutions for larger media collections. They maximize function and utilize the maximum space efficiency. These shelves are ideal for DVDs, Blu-rays, even books. the stronger the wood chosen for the project, the more durable the shelves will be. You could even paint them if you wanted a more polished look.
    For this project, we used 2x4 beams for our verticals and 1x2 beams for our horizontals. Each piece was cut to size. The shelves in this video cost a total of $21.37 including tax!

    I know I am late to the game but this is an interesting way to inexpensively build storage. To answer the question about the big box stores it is their policy to provide one free cut per board. You get an employee in a good mood they might do more for you though! Thanks for posting the video!

    My husband (a former Home Depot employee) said it's definitely their job to cut the wood, however some of them aren't the brightest crayons in the box and might not cut it correctly.
    Thank you for showing your build this was really cool

    This project saved me a lot of time and money. I covered the wood with contact paper before putting it together. I also added an offset 1x2 onto the back of each space to keep the contents in place. I did not attach it to the wall (too hard without cutting the legs by the baseboards) so I leaned it against the wall like a ladder. It doesn't feel like it will fall over and is just for storage. It looks great and already holds over 350 bluerays. Thank you for posting.

    You might try pre drilling the horizontal boards, it might help prevent the splitting of the wood.

      pre-drill, pre-drill, pre-drill! Use a drill bit that's like 1/8" smaller in diameter than your screws.

    After lots of headaches, I finally built a shelf like this in my room with my brother's help. Seems to work pretty well!
    Protip: if you can't drill into the wall because you're renting or, in my case, because the wall is made of cinder blocks, get another set of 1x2s and put them on the back of the shelf, offset slightly, to form a "wall" for the shelf. I say this because when I tried doing this initially, the shelf couldn't lean flat against the wall due to the wood being slightly warped, so tapes and Blu-rays would fall right through the bottom.

  • @j.anderson4254
    @j.anderson4254 5 років тому +4

    Heath I've built the same shelfing and added an additional 2x4 in the middle of my longer beams to add support and keep those 1x2's from bowing. Great video.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 років тому +1

      Great note! If I could do the longer shelves again, I would add that additional 2x4 like you did. The ones in this video are shorter (32 inches), and they’re pretty much perfect. I don’t think I would go much longer than that without adding that extra 2x4.

    These shelves work great and this is definitely my most-watched UA-cam video of all time. Thank you for sharing.
    PROTIP (from a Non-Pro) - Once you plan your shelves and determine your spacing between the horizontals, cut yourself 2 spacer blocks to that exact distance. As long as you get the bottom shelf level to start, then you won't even need to worry about measuring and leveling the rest of them. Just rest each new 1x2 on top of the spacer blocks, screw it in, rinse and repeat. To be safe, you might want to swap the blocks each time (move Block 1 from the left side to the right size and Block 2 from right to left). That way, if there are any fractional differences in length, it will balance out and you won't end up with shelves that become slightly more unlevel as you go from bottom to top. In the end, the spacer blocks will definitely save you some time.

      Also guys, to answer your question, any Lowes, Home Depot, or any hardware store really are happy to cut wood for anyone. It is their job, but only up to a certain point. Larger simple cuts like what you guys got is perfectly reasonable, but they won't come build a house for you, haha.

I'll have to get a shelf for my movies as they are all still in ottomans.

      Yeah, I think a lot of people get rid of their DVD collections, because they really don't have a way to store them, and like me, just have them in a bunch of bins. I go to this local thrift shop in my area and they sell their DVDs for a dollar! Every month for 1 day they have a 50% off everything in the store and you can snag them for 50 cents! I have picked up a ton of really great movies this way everything from the SCI FI Classic Fahrenheit 451 to Casablanca, to The Quiet Man.
      I can't wait to try out this build, and get all my movies organized.

    What I didn't see was how you cut the bottom of the 2X4s to be flat against the wall but go all the way to the floor, making room for the molding at the bottom of the wall. I guess I'll just cut a rectangle out of the bottom end of the 2X4s that go against the wall. Thanks for the great idea. It's going to save me a lot of money.

    Yes, it is their job. They have the industrial size wood cutter in the lumber section for that reason alone. They used to limit the cutting to ONE cut per piece, or an extra charge would apply. My local Home Depot and Lowe’s have done away with that practice and will now cut 2+ per board for free.

    You can put a few flat boards on top of each narrow board to increase the look of the shelfs. This also gives a little reduction in the amount of dust that accumulates compared to now that it is fully open behind the narrow boards.
    Question, is there a dust problem with this open solution?

    fantastic video as always. love the channel. do the screws for the L shaped bracket have to go into the studs of the wall or ok to just go in the wall? Also what kind of scres are you using for the L shaped bracket and then to hold to wood together? Thanks so much

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 років тому

      I couldn’t tell you specific screw sizes (I use whatever I have) but they are wood screws. In some places, we have them anchored into the wall, but in others, they’re just screwed into the plaster. The good thing about these shelves is that they bear their weight straight down and evenly, so there’s no real pull forward. The only way they could be pulled out of the wall is if you pulled directly on the top of the 2x4s. As for the horizontals, we used to screw those in too, but this time we just nailed them in and it seems to work better that way. Faster and easier.

    I like this idea but what about unusual packaging like the 40th anniversary willy wonka box set for example? Any advice or tips on that?

      I personally don't like those big collectible edition packages like the Willy Wonka 40th Anniversary set, so I almost always stay away. I do wish that I had picked up the big collectible version of The Ten Commandments when it was cheap and easy to find, though, because it's the only way to get Cecil B. DeMille's original silent version of The Ten Commandments. I always thought they'd re-release it on its own, but they didn't.

      I built my shelves very similar to these, but I attached a 1x6 board on top of the 2x4's and that is where I can display a few oddly-sized box sets that won't fit on a standard shelf.

    Does Lowes cut the groove into the bottom of the 2x4 for you, too? I don’t have the tools either.

      They might if you ask. Probably depends on the employee. I just sawed them myself win a cheap handsaw.

    My concern is how do you prevent DVDs/BDs from falling out of the back - do you have to keep all shelves pretty full? Example being a single or couple of DVDs on a row. If they fall over from their vertical position; since they were only resting vertically on a narrow ledge, if they fall to a horizontal position would they not fall backwards off the narrow ledge? And if there were not cases on the lower shelves they would fall all the way to the ground?

    This should work for cds too right? Like I’m thinking of doing an 8 x 8 foot unit half for DVDs and half for CDs. The CDs would be shorter in space so more shelves. So thinking maybe an extra support beam in the back as they will probably be heavier. Thoughts?

      Yep, that sounds like a good plan!

      Thanks! It worked out wonderfully! However we found that we need more space for DVDs! So this weekend I’ll be making another smaller one. Thanks for sharing this awesome project!

    Great video: 2 questions for you: 1) how many dvds were you able to completely store? Can you make it without it be nailed to the wall? Thanks

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 роки тому +1

      Each shelf has different dimensions according to the size of the wall and lots of DVDs are different sizes (Blu-rays, TV seasons, box sets), so there's no set answer for how many discs they can store. And I wouldn't try these without securing them to the wall, or the whole thing could tip over!

      @@CerealAtMidnight hmm I’m trying to avoid any damage to the walls. I have about 4000 dvds. Some are big box sets . Thanks.. could you upload a video of the step by step construction? Thanks

    Did you have to find the studs in the wall or did you just put them up wherever

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 роки тому

      We didn't put them in studs because there weren't any in the areas we measured as equal distances.

    What do you think about taking the DVDs out of their cases and putting them in plastic sleeves or binders? Is it sacrilege or genius space saver option? I have our collection in plastic tubs for now. Was thinking of putting all our DVD/Blu-Ray discs in binders and putting the cases in our garage but it pulls on my heart to do that.

      I think whatever works for you and makes you happy is what you should do. However, there does seem to be some evidence that those plastic binders promote bit rot. Some people swear against this, but the one consistent factor in people with large collections that have developed pin holes in the playing surface is that a lot of those collectors were using CD binders to store their discs.

      Cereal At Midnight Yeah that’s what I thought. I almost went through with the binder/case idea. Glad I didn’t. I will just make room for them in their original packaging. I love your collection.

    Does this size shelving work well w/ vhs too? Or would they fall through?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Рік тому

      I think they'd probably be too heavy, but maybe it you used a really sturdy wood for the horizontals.

    Should have pre-drilled the holes for the horizontals so the wood wouldnt have cracked. But other than that the shelves look easy and clean and i like them.
